Constancy of an Infinite Cyclotomic Product via Ramanujan Sums
We show that the infinite product defined by \[ P(z) = -\prod_{n=1}^{\infty} (Φ_n(z))^{-1/n}, \] where \( Φ_n(z) \) is the \( n \)-th cyclotomic polynomial, is constant inside the unit disk. The proof translates a result of Ramanujan on Ramanujan sums, equivalent to the prime number theorem, to the setting of infinite products. We also show that similar identities proved by Ramanujan lead to additional results on infinite cyclotomic products.

Scattered Behavior Using Modified Cyclotomic Mapping Over Finite Fields Of Odd Characteristic
Introduced by Sheekey in 2016, the study of scattered polynomials over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ has been increasing regarding the classification of those that are exceptional, i.e., polynomials which are scattered over infinite field extensions, are limited to the cases where their index $t$ is small, or a prime number larger than the q-degree k of the polynomial, or an integer smaller than k in the case where k is a prime. In this paper, we focus on the scattered behavior of $S(x)=\sum_{i=1}^k a_ix^{q^{r_i}} \in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}[x]$, where $q$ is a power of an odd prime, $0<r_1<r_2< \cdots<r_k<n$ and $a_1, \cdots,a_k \in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}^*$ such that the order of $a_i$'s divide $(q^{r_1}-1)$, $\forall i=2,3,\cdots,k $. We explore a connection between $S(x)$ and the cyclotomic mapping polynomial. As an application, in three parts, we discuss the scattered behavior of $S(x)$ of index $t$ where $t=r_1$, or $0<t<r_1$, or $r_1<t<n$. Starting with the pseudoregulus type of index $t \geq 0$, we present conditions to verify scattered behavior of $S(x)$ of index $r_1$. With some additional conditions, we do the same in case $0<t<r_1$ or $r_1<t<n$. In particular, for $S(x)=a_1x^{q^{r_1}}+a_2x^{q^{r_2}} \in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}[x]$ with $a_1,a_2 \in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}^*$ such that $|a_2| \mid q^{r_1}-1$, we present a necessary and sufficient condition to verify its scattered behavior of index $t \in \{r_1,r_2\}$. We also connect such scattered binomials with the well known Lunardon-Polverino polynomial. With conditions on $δ, q,n$, and $r$; we present a new family of exceptional scattered polynomial $S(x)=x^q+δx^{q^{(2r+1)}} \in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}[x]$ of index $\{r+1\}$.
On minimal product-one sequences of maximal length over the non-abelian group of order $pq$
Let $G$ be a finite group. A sequence over $G$ is a finite multiset of elements of $G$, and it is called product-one if its terms can be ordered so that their product is the identity of $G$. The large Davenport constant $\D(G)$ is the maximal length of a minimal product-one sequence, that is, a product-one sequence that cannot be partitioned into two nontrivial product-one subsequences. Let $p,q$ be odd prime numbers with $p \mid q-1$ and let $C_q \rtimes C_p$ denote the non-abelian group of order $pq$. It is known that $\D(C_q \rtimes C_p) = 2q$. In this paper, we describe all minimal product-one sequences of length $2q$ over $C_q \rtimes C_p$. As an application, we further investigate the $k$-th elasticity (and, consequently, the union of sets containing $k$) of the monoid of product-one sequences over these groups.

Lifting of cycles in functional graphs
For a given function from a set to itself, we can define a directed graph called the functional graph, where the vertices are the elements of the set, and the edges are all the pairs of inputs and outputs for the function. In this article we consider functional graphs on Z/mZ with respect to polynomial functions. The main result describes the behavior of cycles in functional graphs on Z/p^nZ while $n$ is increasing, where $p$ is a prime number.

Galois Automorphisms And Littlewood Decompositions
The study of modular representation theory of the double covering groups of the symmetric and alternating groups reveals rich and subtle combinatorial and algebraic phenomena involving their irreducible characters and the structure of their p-blocks, where p is an odd prime number. In this paper, we investigate the action of certain Galois automorphisms, those that act on p'-roots of unity by a power of p, on spin characters, with an emphasis on their interaction with perfect isometries and block theory. In particular, we prove that perfect isometries constructed by the first author and J.\,B. Gramain in \cite{BrGr3}, which were used to establish a weaker form of the Kessar--Schaps conjecture, remain preserved under this Galois action whenever certain natural compatibility conditions occur.

Folkman's theorem and the primes
We provide two new proofs of the infinitude of prime numbers, using the additive Ramsey-theoretic result known as Folkman's theorem (alternatively, one can think of these proofs as using Hindman's theorem). This adds to the existing literature deriving the infinitude of primes from Ramsey-type theorems.
Lee Distance of cyclic codes of length $2^ς$ over $\mathbb{F}_{2^m} + u\mathbb{F}_{2^m} + u^2\mathbb{F}_{2^m}$
Let $p$ be a prime number and $ς$ and $m$ be a positive integers. Let $\mathcal{R} = \mathbb{F}_{2^m} + u\mathbb{F}_{2^m} + u^2\mathbb{F}_{2^m}$ ($u^3 = 0$). Cyclic codes of length $2^ς$ over $\mathcal{R}$ are precisely the ideals of the local ring $\frac{\mathcal{R}[x]}{\langle x^{2^ς}-1 \rangle}$. The Gray map from a code of Lee weight over $\mathbb{Z}_4$ to a code with Hamming weight over $\mathbb{F}_2$ is known to preserve weight. In this paper, we determine the Lee distance of cyclic codes of length $2^ς$ over $\mathcal{R}$.

Enumeration of Cayley graphs over a nonabelian group of order $8p$
Let $T_{8p} = \left\langle a,b\mid a^{2p}=b^8=e,a^p=b^4,b^{-1}ab=a^{-1} \right\rangle$ be a nonabelian group of order $8p$, where $p$ is an odd prime number. In this paper, we give the formula to calculate the number of Cayley graphs over $T_{8p}$ up to isomorphism by using the Pólya Enumeration Theorem. Moreover, we get the formula to calculate the number of connected Cayley graphs over $T_{8p}$ by deleting the disconnected graphs. By applying the results, we list the exact number of (connected) Cayley graphs for $3\leq p \leq 13$.

Toric arrangements and Bloch-Kato pro-$p$ groups
We prove a purely combinatorial obstruction for the Bloch-Kato property within the class of fundamental groups of complement manifolds of toric arrangements (i.e., arrangements of hypersurfaces in the complex torus). As a stepping stone we obtain a combinatorial obstruction for the cohomology of a supersolvable arrangement to be generated in degree 1. Our result allows us to prove that - for all prime numbers $p$, the pro-$p$ completion of the pure braid group on $k$ strands has the Bloch-Kato property if and only if $k\leq 3$; - for all prime numbers $p$, the pro-$p$ completion of the pure mapping class group of the sphere $S^2$ with $k$ punctures has the Bloch-Kato property if and only if $k\leq 4$.

Tiling symmetric groups by transpositions
For nonempty subsets $X$ and $Y$ of a group $G$, we say that $(X,Y)$ is a tiling of $G$ if every element of $G$ can be uniquely expressed as $xy$ for some $x\in X$ and $y\in Y$. In 1966, Rothaus and Thompson studied whether the symmetric group $S_n$ with $n\geq3$ admits a tiling $(T_n,Y)$, where $T_n$ consists of the identity and all the transpositions in $S_n$. They showed that no such tiling exists if $1+n(n-1)/2$ is divisible by a prime number at least $\sqrt{n}+2$. In this paper, we establish a new necessary condition for the existence of such a tiling: the subset $Y$ must be partition-transitive with respect to certain partitions of $n$. This generalizes the result of Rothaus and Thompson, as well as a result of Nomura in 1985. We also study whether $S_n$ can be tiled by the set $T_n^*$ of all the transpositions, which finally leads us to conjecture that neither $T_n$ nor $T_n^*$ tiles $S_n$ for any $n\geq4$.

Kneser's theorem for codes and $\ell$-divisible set families
A $k$-wise $\ell$-divisible set family is a collection $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of ${ \{1,\ldots,n \} }$ such that any intersection of $k$ sets in $\mathcal{F}$ has cardinality divisible by $\ell$. If $k=\ell=2$, it is well-known that $|\mathcal{F}|\leq 2^{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$. We generalise this by proving that $|\mathcal{F}|\leq 2^{\lfloor n/p\rfloor}$ if $k=\ell=p$, for any prime number $p$. For arbitrary values of $\ell$, we prove that $4\ell^2$-wise $\ell$-divisible set families $\mathcal{F}$ satisfy $|\mathcal{F}|\leq 2^{\lfloor n/\ell\rfloor}$ and that the only families achieving the upper bound are atomic, meaning that they consist of all the unions of disjoint subsets of size $\ell$. This improves upon a recent result by Gishboliner, Sudakov and Timon, that arrived at the same conclusion for $k$-wise $\ell$-divisible families, with values of $k$ that behave exponentially in $\ell$. Our techniques rely heavily upon a coding-theory analogue of Kneser's Theorem from additive combinatorics.

A solution to a Paul Erdos problem
Paul Erdos posed the following question: Is there a prime number $p>5$ such that the residues of $2!$, $3!$,\ldots, $(p-1)!$ modulo $p$ all are distinct? In this short note, we prove that there are no such prime numbers.

An analogue of the Herbrand-Ribet theorem in graph theory
We study an analogue of the Herbrand-Ribet theorem, and its refinement by Mazur and Wiles, in graph theory. For an odd prime number $p$, we let $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ denote the finite field with $p$ elements and the ring of $p$-adic integers, respectively. We consider Galois covers $Y/X$ of finite graphs with Galois group $Δ$ isomorphic to $\mathbb{F}_{p}^{\times}$. Given a $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-valued character of $Δ$, we relate the cardinality of the corresponding character component of the $p$-primary subgroup of the degree zero Picard group of $Y$ to the $p$-adic absolute value of the special value at $u=1$ of the corresponding Artin-Ihara $L$-function.

A Note on ID-Colorings and Symmetric Colorings of Cycles
A red-white coloring of a nontrivial connected graph $G$ is an assignment of red and white colors to the vertices of~$G$. Associated with each vertex $v$ of $G$ of diameter $d$ is a $d$-vector, called the code of $v$, whose $i$th coordinate is the number of red vertices at distance $i$ from $v$. A red-white coloring of $G$ for which distinct vertices have distinct codes is called an ID-coloring of $G$. In 2025, a criterion to determine whether a red-white coloring of a path is an ID-coloring or not was presented by Kono, with the aid of a result shown by Marcelo et al. in 2024. The criterion utilizes the fact that ID-colorings of paths are ``opposite'' of colorings with a certain symmetry. In this paper, we establish a similar criterion that can be applied for cycles whose order is a prime number at least 3. In order to do so, we employ an analogous approaches used for the criterion for paths, i.e., we pay attention to symmetries of given red-white colorings of cycles.

On restricted sumsets with bounded degree relations
Published in Mathematika 71 (2025), no. 4, e70045 • View PublicationBIB
Given two subsets $A, B \subseteq \mathbb{F}_p$ and a binary relation $\mathcal{R} \subseteq A \times B$, the restricted sumset of $A, B$ with respect to $\mathcal{R}$ is defined as $A +_{\mathcal{R}} B = \{ a+b \colon (a,b) \notin \mathcal{R} \}$. When $\mathcal{R}$ is taken as the equality relation, determining the minimum value of $|A +_{\mathcal{R}} B|$ is the famous Erdős--Heilbronn problem, which was solved separately by Dias da Silva, Hamidoune and Alon, Nathanson and Ruzsa. Lev later conjectured that if $A, B \subseteq \mathbb{F}_p$ with $|A| + |B| \le p$ and $\mathcal{R}$ is a matching between subsets of $A$ and $B$, then $|A +_{\mathcal{R}} B| \ge |A| + |B| - 3$. We confirm this conjecture in the case where $|A| + |B| \le (1-\varepsilon)p$ for any $\varepsilon > 0$, provided that $p > p_0$ for some sufficiently large $p_0$ depending only on $\varepsilon$. Our proof builds on a recent work by Bollobás, Leader, and Tiba, and a rectifiability argument developed by Green and Ruzsa. Furthermore, our method extends to cases when $\mathcal{R}$ is a degree-bounded relation, either on both sides $A$ and $B$ or solely on the smaller set. In addition, we construct subsets $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_p$ with $|A| = \frac{6p}{11} - O(1)$ such that $|A +_{\mathcal{R}} A| = p-3$ for any prime number $p$, where $\mathcal{R}$ is a matching on $A$. This extends an earlier construction by Lev and highlights a distinction between the combinatorial notion of the restricted sumset and the classcial Erdős--Heilbronn problem, where $|A +_{\mathcal{R}} A| \ge p$ holds given $\mathcal{R} = \{(a,a) \colon a \in A\}$ is the equality relation on $A$ and $|A| \ge \frac{p+3}{2}$.

Barbara Rokowska's combinatorial research with her extensive biography (1926--2012)
Published in Antiquitates Mathematicae Vol 18 (2024) , 191-218 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss the significance of some interesting results by Barbara Rokowska about combinatorial constructions. Her interest in finite mathematics and number theory began with an embellishment and detailing of some work by Erdos. Rokowska and Schinzel then solved the problem posed by Paul Erdos concerning the existence of prime numbers of a certain kind. Her subsequent work highlighted the difficulty in constructing Steiner systems with certain properties and showed the importance of rigorous proof techniques in this area of mathematics. This is the first such summary of the main results obtained by Rokowska, her collaborators and PhD students. A biography of Barbara Rokowska has been added as an appendix.
Partition-theoretic model of prime distribution
We make an application of ideas from partition theory to a problem in multiplicative number theory. We propose a deterministic model of prime number distribution, from first principles related to properties of integer partitions, that naturally predicts the prime number theorem as well as the twin prime conjecture. The model posits that, for $n\geq 2$, $$p_{n}\ =\ 1\ +\ 2\sum_{j=1}^{n-1}\left\lceil \frac{d(j)}{2}\right\rceil\ +\ \varepsilon(n),$$ where $p_k$ is the $k$th prime number, $d(k)$ is the divisor function, and $\varepsilon(k)$ is an explicit error term that is negligible asymptotically; both the main term and error term represent enumerative functions in our conceptual model. We refine the error term to give numerical estimates of $π(n)$ similar to those provided by the logarithmic integral, and much more accurate than $\operatorname{li}(n)$ up to $n=10{,}000$ where the estimates are {\it almost exact}. We then perform computational tests of unusual predictions of the model, finding limited evidence of predictable variations in prime gaps.

Iwasawa theory for weighted graphs
Let $p$ be a prime number and let $d$ be a positive integer. In this paper, we generalize Iwasawa theory for graphs initiated by Gonet and Vallières to weighted graphs. In particular, we prove an analogue of Iwasawa's class number formula and that of Kida's formula for compatible systems of $(\mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z})^d$-covers of weighted graphs. We also provide numerical examples of characteristic elements and Iwasawa invariants. At the end of this paper, we give an application of the ideas of Iwasawa theory to the theory of discrete-time quantum walks in graphs.
Generalizing the Bierbrauer-Friedman bound for orthogonal arrays
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 93(11) 2025, 4937-4950 • View PublicationBIB
We characterize mixed-level orthogonal arrays in terms of algebraic designs in a special multigraph. We prove a mixed-level analog of the Bierbrauer-Friedman (BF) bound for pure-level orthogonal arrays and show that arrays attaining it are radius-1 completely regular codes (equivalently, intriguing sets, equitable 2-partitions, perfect 2-colorings) in the corresponding multigraph. For the case when the numbers of levels are powers of the same prime number, we characterize, in terms of multispreads, additive mixed-level orthogonal arrays attaining the BF bound. For pure-level orthogonal arrays, we consider versions of the BF bound obtained by replacing the Hamming graph by its polynomial generalization and show that in some cases this gives a new bound. Keywords: orthogonal array, algebraic t-design, completely regular code, equitable partition, intriguing set, Hamming graph, Bierbrauer-Friedman bound, additive codes.

Cryptarithmically unique terms in integer sequences
A cryptarithm (or alphametic) is a mathematical puzzle in which numbers are represented with words in such a way that identical letters stand for equal digits and distinct letters for unequal digits. An alphametic puzzle is usually given in the form of an equation that needs to be solved, such as SEND + MORE = MONEY. Alternatively, here we will consider cryptarithms constrained not by an equation but by a particular subsequence of natural numbers, for example perfect squares or primes. Such a cryptarithm has a unique solution if there is exactly one term in the sequence that has the corresponding pattern of digits. We will call such terms cryptarithmically unique. Here we estimate the density of such terms in an arbitrary sequence for which the overall density of terms among integers is known. In particular, among all perfect squares below 10^12, slightly less than one half are cryptarithmically unique, their density increasing toward larger numbers. Cryptarithmically unique prime numbers, however, are initially very scarce. Combinatorial estimates suggest that their density should drop below 10^-300 for decimal lengths of approximately 1829 digits, but then it recovers and is asymptotic to unity for very large primes. Finally, we introduce and discuss primonumerophobic digit patterns that no prime number happens to have.
