Fix a principal ideal domain $k$. In this article we associate to a (weighted) matroid $M$ a quasi-hereditary algebra $R(M)$ defined over $k$ such that matroid duality corresponds to Ringel duality of quasi-hereditary algebras. The representation theory of these algebras is related to work of Schechtman-Varchenko and Brylawski-Varchenko. In characteristic zero, our algebras are also closely related to work of Kook-Reiner-Stanton and Denham.
Twisted Brauer monoids

We investigate the structure of the twisted Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n^τ$, comparing and contrasting it to the structure of the (untwisted) Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n$. We characterise Green's relations and pre-orders on $\mathcal B_n^τ$, describe the lattice of ideals, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for an ideal to be idempotent-generated. We obtain formulae for the rank (smallest size of a generating set) and (where applicable) the idempotent rank (smallest size of an idempotent generating set) of each principal ideal; in particular, when an ideal is idempotent-generated, its rank and idempotent rank are equal. As an application of our results, we also describe the idempotent-generated subsemigroup of $\mathcal B_n^τ$ (which is not an ideal) as well as the singular ideal of $\mathcal B_n^τ$ (which is neither principal nor idempotent-generated), and we deduce a result of Maltcev and Mazorchuk that the singular part of the Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n$ is idempotent-generated.

Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a commutative semigroup, and let $T$ be a sequence of terms from the semigroup $\mathcal{S}$. We call $T$ an (additively) {\sl irreducible} sequence provided that no sum of its some terms vanishes. Given any element $a$ of $\mathcal{S}$, let ${\rm D}_a(\mathcal{S})$ be the largest length of the irreducible sequence such that the sum of all terms from the sequence is equal to $a$. In case that any ascending chain of principal ideals starting from the ideal $(a)$ terminates in $\mathcal{S}$, we found the sufficient and necessary conditions of ${\rm D}_a(\mathcal{S})$ being finite, and in particular, we gave sharp lower and upper bounds of ${\rm D}_a(\mathcal{S})$ in case ${\rm D}_a(\mathcal{S})$ is finite. We also applied the result to commutative unitary rings. As a special case, the value of ${\rm D}_a(\mathcal{S})$ was determined when $\mathcal{S}$ is the multiplicative semigroup of any finite commutative principal ideal unitary ring.

For a positive integer $d$, a non-negative integer $n$ and a non-negative integer $h\leq n$, we study the number $C_{n}^{(d)}$ of principal ideals; and the number $C_{n,h}^{(d)}$ of principal ideals generated by an element of rank $h$, in the $d$-tonal partition monoid on $n$ elements. We compute closed forms for the first family, as partial cumulative sums of known sequences. The second gives an infinite family of new integral sequences. We discuss their connections to certain integral lattices as well as to combinatorics of partitions.
Non-Existence of Some Nearly Perfect Sequences, Near Butson-Hadamard Matrices, and Near Conference Matrices

In this paper we study the non-existence problem of (nearly) perfect (almost) $m$-ary sequences via their connection to (near) Butson-Hadamard (BH) matrices and (near) conference matrices. Firstly, we apply a result on vanishing sums of roots of unity and a result of Brock on the unsolvability of certain equations over a cyclotomic number field to derive non-existence results for near BH matrices and near conference matrices. Secondly, we refine the idea of Brock in the case of cyclotomic number fields whose ring of integers is not a principal ideal domains and get many new non-existence results.
Degeneration and orbits of tuples and subgroups in an Abelian group

A tuple (or subgroup) in a group is said to degenerate to another if the latter is an endomorphic image of the former. In a countable reduced abelian group, it is shown that if tuples (or finite subgroups) degenerate to each other, then they lie in the same automorphism orbit. The proof is based on techniques that were developed by Kaplansky and Mackey in order to give an elegant proof of Ulm's theorem. Similar results hold for reduced countably generated torsion modules over principal ideal domains. It is shown that the depth and the description of atoms of the resulting poset of orbits of tuples depend only on the Ulm invariants of the module in question (and not on the underlying ring). A complete description of the poset of orbits of elements in terms of the Ulm invariants of the module is given. The relationship between this description of orbits and a very different-looking one obtained by Dutta and Prasad for torsion modules of bounded order is explained.

Two players alternate moves in the following impartial combinatorial game: Given a finitely generated abelian group $A$, a move consists of picking some nonzero element $a \in A$. The game then continues with the quotient group $A/ \langle a \rangle$. We prove that under the normal play rule, the second player has a winning strategy if and only if $A$ is a square, i.e. $A$ is isomorphic to $B \times B$ for some abelian group $B$. Under the misère play rule, only minor modifications concerning elementary abelian groups are necessary to describe the winning situations. We also compute the nimbers, i.e. Sprague-Grundy values, of $2$-generated abelian groups. An analogous game can be played with arbitrary algebraic structures. We study some examples of non-abelian groups and commutative rings such as $R[X]$, where $R$ is a principal ideal domain.
A formal calculus on the Riordan near algebra

The Riordan group is the semi-direct product of a multiplicative group of invertible series and a group, under substitution, of non units. The Riordan near algebra, as introduced in this paper, is the Cartesian product of the algebra of formal power series and its principal ideal of non units, equipped with a product that extends the multiplication of the Riordan group. The later is naturally embedded as a subgroup of units into the former. In this paper, we prove the existence of a formal calculus on the Riordan algebra. This formal calculus plays a role similar to those of holomorphic calculi in the Banach or Fréchet algebras setting, but without the constraint of a radius of convergence. Using this calculus, we define \emph{en passant} a notion of generalized powers in the Riordan group.

Planar coincidence site lattices and modules with N-fold symmetry are well understood in a formulation based on cyclotomic fields, in particular for the class number one case, where they appear as certain principal ideals in the corresponding ring of integers. We extend this approach to multiple coincidences, which apply to triple or multiple junctions. In particular, we give explicit results for spectral, combinatorial and asymptotic properties in terms of Dirichlet series generating functions.

All Cohen--Macaulay polymatroidal ideals are classified. The Cohen--Macaulay polymatroidal ideals are precisely the principal ideals, the Veronese ideals, and the squarefree Veronese ideals.
On the Parameters of Convolutional Codes with Cyclic Structure

In this paper convolutional codes with cyclic structure will be investigated. These codes can be understood as left principal ideals in a suitable skew-polynomial ring. It has been shown in [3] that only certain combinations of the parameters (field size, length, dimension, and Forney indices) can occur for cyclic codes. We will investigate whether all these combinations can indeed be realized by a suitable cyclic code and, if so, how to construct such a code. A complete characterization and construction will be given for minimal cyclic codes. It is derived from a detailed investigation of the units in the skew-polynomial ring.
Elementary divisors of Specht modules
Let H_q(S_n) be the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group. This algebra is semisimple over the rational function field Q(q), where q is an indeterminate, and its irreducible representations over this field are q-analogues S_q(lambda) of the Specht modules of the symmetric group.
The q-Specht modules have an "integral form" which is defined over the Laurent polynomial ring Z_[q,q^{-1}] and they come equipped with a natural bilinear form with values in this ring. Now Z[q,q^{-1}] is not a principal ideal domain. Nonetheless, we try to compute the elementary divisors of the Gram matrix of the bilinear form on S_q(lambda). When they are defined, we give a precise relationship between the elementary divisors of the Specht modules S_q(lambda) and S_q(lambda'), where lambda' is the conjugate partition. We also compute the elementary divisors when lambda is a hook partition and give examples to show that in general elementary divisors do not exist.

We consider Kasteleyn and Kasteleyn-Percus matrices, which arise in enumerating matchings of planar graphs, up to matrix operations on their rows and columns. If such a matrix is defined over a principal ideal domain, this is equivalent to considering its Smith normal form or its cokernel. Many variations of the enumeration methods result in equivalent matrices. In particular, Gessel-Viennot matrices are equivalent to Kasteleyn-Percus matrices.
We apply these ideas to plane partitions and related planar of tilings. We list a number of conjectures, supported by experiments in Maple, about the forms of matrices associated to enumerations of plane partitions and other lozenge tilings of planar regions and their symmetry classes. We focus on the case where the enumerations are round or $q$-round, and we conjecture that cokernels remain round or $q$-round for related ``impossible enumerations'' in which there are no tilings. Our conjectures provide a new view of the topic of enumerating symmetry classes of plane partitions and their generalizations. In particular we conjecture that a $q$-specialization of a Jacobi-Trudi matrix has a Smith normal form. If so it could be an interesting structure associated to the corresponding irreducible representation of $\SL(n,\C)$. Finally we find, with proof, the normal form of the matrix that appears in the enumeration of domino tilings of an Aztec diamond.
The Sign Representation for Shephard Groups

Shephard groups are unitary reflection groups arising as the symmetries of regular complex polytopes. For a Shephard group, we identify the representation carried by the principal ideal in the coinvariant algebra generated by the image of the product of all linear forms defining reflecting hyperplanes. This representation turns out to have many equivalent guises making it analogous to the sign representation of a finite Coxeter group. One of these guises is (up to a twist) the cohomology of the Milnor fiber for the isolated singularity at 0 in the hypersurface defined by any homogeneous invariant of minimal degree.
