Limit Densities of Patterns in Permutation Inflations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Call a permutation $k$-inflatable if the sequence of its tensor products with uniform random permutations of increasing lengths has uniform $k$-point pattern densities. Previous work has shown that nontrivial $k$-inflatable permutations do not exist for $k \geq 4$. In this paper, we derive a general formula for the limit densities of patterns in the sequence of tensor products of a fixed permutation with each permutation from a convergent sequence. By applying this result, we completely characterize $3$-inflatable permutations and find explicit examples of $3$-inflatable permutations with various lengths, including the shortest examples with length $17$.
The Capacity of Some Pólya String Models
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study random string-duplication systems, which we call Pólya string models. These are motivated by DNA storage in living organisms, and certain random mutation processes that affect their genome. Unlike previous works that study the combinatorial capacity of string-duplication systems, or various string statistics, this work provides exact capacity or bounds on it, for several probabilistic models. In particular, we study the capacity of noisy string-duplication systems, including the tandem-duplication, end-duplication, and interspersed-duplication systems. Interesting connections are drawn between some systems and the signature of random permutations, as well as to the beta distribution common in population genetics.

Permutations avoiding 312 and another pattern, Chebyshev polynomials and longest increasing subsequences
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. Volume 116, May 2020, 102002 • View PublicationBIB
We study the longest increasing subsequence problem for random permutations avoiding the pattern $312$ and another pattern $τ$ under the uniform probability distribution. We determine the exact and asymptotic formulas for the average length of the longest increasing subsequences for such permutation classes specifically when the pattern $τ$ is monotone increasing or decreasing, or any pattern of length four.

Attacks and alignments: rooks, set partitions, and permutations
We consider uniformly random set partitions of size $n$ with exactly $k$ blocks, and uniformly random permutations of size $n$ with exactly $k$ cycles, under the regime where $n-k \sim t\sqrt{n}$, $t>0$. In this regime, there is a simple approximation for the entire process of component counts; in particular, the number of components of size 3 converges in distribution to Poisson with mean $\frac{2}{3}t^2$ for set partitions and mean $\frac{4}{3}t^2$ for permutations, and with high probability all other components have size one or two. These approximations are proved, with preasymptotic error bounds, using combinatorial bijections for placements of $r$ rooks on a triangular half of an $n\times n$ chess board, together with the Chen--Stein method for processes of indicator random variables.

Monotonous subsequences and the descent process of invariant random permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known from the work of Baik, Deift, and Johansson [1999] that we have Tracy-Widom fluctuations for the longest increasing subsequence of uniform permutations. In this paper, we prove that this result holds also in the case of the Ewens distribution and more generally for a class of random permutation with distribution invariant under conjugation. Moreover, we obtain the convergence of the first components of the associated Young tableaux to the Airy Ensemble as well as the global convergence to the Vershik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp shape. Using similar techniques, we also prove that the limiting descent process of a large class of random permutations is stationary, one-dependent and determinantal.

Patterns in random permutations avoiding some sets of multiple patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a random permutation drawn from the set of permutations of length $n$ that avoid some given set of patterns of length 3. We show that the number of occurrences of another pattern $σ$ has a limit distribution, after suitable scaling. In several cases, the number is asymptotically normal; this contrasts to the cases of permutations avoiding a single pattern of length 3 studied in earlier papers.

A Generalized Cover's Problem
Generalizing a problem posed by Cover, we propose an adversarial game in which a permutation is incrementally constructed in a setting of partial information. As in the secretary problem, this permutation is exposed in stages via the successive components of its Lehmer code. Extending Cover's result, which constitutes the case $n = 2$, we establish that a random permutation of $n$ adversarially constructed real numbers can be reconstructed with better-than-random probability, provided that certain among the numbers it permutes are made visible during the process.

Perfect shuffling by lazy swaps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the minimum-length sequences of independent lazy simple transpositions whose composition is a uniformly random permutation. For every reduced word of the reverse permutation there is exactly one valid way to assign probabilities to the transpositions. It is an open problem to determine the minimum length of such a sequence when the simplicity condition is dropped.
Subgraph counts for dense random graphs with specified degrees
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 30 (2021) 460-497 • View PublicationBIB
We prove two estimates for the expectation of the exponential of a complex function of a random permutation or subset. Using this theory, we find asymptotic expressions for the expected number of copies and induced copies of a given graph in a uniformly random graph with degree sequence $(d_1,\ldots,d_n)$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. We also determine the expected number of spanning trees in this model. The range of degrees covered includes $d_j = λn + O(n^{1/2+\varepsilon})$ for some $λ$ bounded away from $0$ and $1$.

Eigenvalues of random lifts and polynomials of random permutation matrices
Published in Annals of Mathematics 190 (2019), no. 3, 811-75 • View PublicationBIB
Consider a finite sequence of independent random permutations, chosen uniformly either among all permutations or among all matchings on n points. We show that, in probability, as n goes to infinity, these permutations viewed as operators on the (n-1) dimensional vector space orthogonal to the vector with all coordinates equal to 1, are asymptotically strongly free. Our proof relies on the development of a matrix version of the non-backtracking operator theory and a refined trace method. As a byproduct, we show that the non-trivial eigenvalues of random n-lifts of a fixed based graphs approximately achieve the Alon-Boppana bound with high probability in the large n limit. This result generalizes Friedman's Theorem stating that with high probability, the Schreier graph generated by a finite number of independent random permutations is close to Ramanujan. Finally, we extend our results to tensor products of random permutation matrices. This extension is especially relevant in the context of quantum expanders.

Patterns in random permutations avoiding the pattern 321
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a random permutation drawn from the set of 321-avoiding permutations of length $n$ and show that the number of occurrences of another pattern $σ$ has a limit distribution, after scaling by $n^{m+\ell}$ where $m$ is the length of $σ$ and $\ell$ is the number of blocks in it. The limit is not normal, and can be expressed as a functional of a Brownian excursion.
Universal limits of substitution-closed permutation classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider uniform random permutations in proper substitution-closed classes and study their limiting behavior in the sense of permutons. The limit depends on the generating series of the simple permutations in the class. Under a mild sufficient condition, the limit is an elementary one-parameter deformation of the limit of uniform separable permutations, previously identified as the Brownian separable permuton. This limiting object is therefore in some sense universal. We identify two other regimes with different limiting objects. The first one is degenerate; the second one is nontrivial and related to stable trees. These results are obtained thanks to a characterization of the convergence of random permutons through the convergence of their expected pattern densities. The limit of expected pattern densities is then computed by using the substitution tree encoding of permutations and performing singularity analysis on the tree series.

Circular law for the sum of random permutation matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $P_n^1,\dots, P_n^d$ be $n\times n$ permutation matrices drawn independently and uniformly at random, and set $S_n^d:=\sum_{\ell=1}^d P_n^\ell$. We show that if $\log^{12}n/(\log \log n)^{4} \le d=O(n)$, then the empirical spectral distribution of $S_n^d/\sqrt{d}$ converges weakly to the circular law in probability as $n \to \infty$.

On the Approximate Asymptotic Statistical Independence of the Permanents of 0-1 Matrices
We consider the ensemble of n x n 0 - 1 matrices with all column and row sums equal r. We give this ensemble the uniform weighting to construct a measure E. We know from the work of Wanless and Pernici that E(prod_{i=1}^N (perm_{m_i}(A)) = prod_{i=1}^N (E(perm_{m_i}(A)) * (1+ O(1/n^4)) In this paper we prove E_1(prod_{i=1}^N (perm_{m_i}(A)) = prod_{i=1}^N (E_1(perm_{m_i}(A)) * (1+ O(1/n^2)) where E_1 is the measure constructed on the ensemble of n x n 0 - 1 matrices with non-negative integer entries realized as the sum of r random permutation matrices. E_1 is often used as an "approximation" to E. We have computer evidence for E_1(prod_{i=1}^N (perm_{m_i}(A)) = prod_{i=1}^N (E_1(perm_{m_i}(A)) * (1+ O(1/n^4)).

A Central Limit Theorem for Vincular Permutation Patterns
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2016, Permutation Patterns (March 26, 2018) dmtcs:3269 • View PublicationBIB
We study the number of occurrences of any fixed vincular permutation pattern. We show that this statistics on uniform random permutations is asymptotically normal and describe the speed of convergence. To prove this central limit theorem, we use the method of dependency graphs. The main difficulty is then to estimate the variance of our statistics. We need a lower bound on the variance, for which we introduce a recursive technique based on the law of total variance.

A constructive algorithm for the LLL on permutations
Published in Theory of Computing 13(17), pp. 1-41 (2017) • Search Publication
While there has been significant progress on algorithmic aspects of the Lovász Local Lemma (LLL) in recent years, a noteworthy exception is when the LLL is used in the context of random permutations. The breakthrough algorithm of Moser & Tardos only works in the setting of independent variables, and does not apply in this context. We resolve this by developing a randomized polynomial-time algorithm for such applications. A noteworthy application is for Latin transversals: the best-known general result here (Bissacot et al., improving on Erdős and Spencer), states that any $n \times n$ matrix in which each entry appears at most $(27/256)n$ times, has a Latin transversal. We present the first polynomial-time algorithm to construct such a transversal. We also develop RNC algorithms for Latin transversals, rainbow Hamiltonian cycles, strong chromatic number, and hypergraph packing. In addition to efficiently finding a configuration which avoids bad-events, the algorithm of Moser & Tardos has many powerful extensions and properties. These include a well-characterized distribution on the output distribution, parallel algorithms, and a partial resampling variant. We show that our algorithm has nearly all of the same useful properties as the Moser-Tardos algorithm, and present a comparison of this aspect with recent works on the LLL in general probability spaces.

Asymptotic analysis of the cyclic structure of permutations
This is my dissertation. Its research object is a symmetric group of permutations acting on a finite set. The density of permutations with a given cycle structure pattern is explored when the group order tends to infinity. New and sharper asymptotic formulas are obtained. The latter are applied in approximations of the cycle vector distribution of a random permutation. The saddle-point method, Lagrange-Bürmann inversion formula, Laplace transformations, and other techniques of complex analysis are applied.

Spherically Symmetric Random Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider random permutations which are spherically symmetric with respect to a metric on the symmetric group $S_n$ and are consistent as $n$ varies. The extreme infinitely spherically symmetric permutation-valued processes are identified for the Hamming, Kendall-tau and Caley metrics. The proofs in all three cases are based on a unified approach through stochastic monotonicity.

New bounds for the Moser-Tardos distribution
Published in Random Structures & Algorithms 57(1), pp. 97-131 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
The Lovasz Local Lemma (LLL) is a probabilistic tool which has been used to show the existence of a variety of combinatorial structures with good "local" properties. The "LLL-distribution" can be used to show that the resulting structures have good global properties in expectation. The simplest, variable-based setting of the LLL was covered by the seminal algorithm of Moser & Tardos (2010). This has since been extended to other probability spaces including random permutations. One can similarly define an "MT-distribution" for these algorithms, that is, the distribution of the configuration they produce. Haeupler et al. (2011) showed bounds on the MT-distribution which essentially match the LLL-distribution for the variable-assignment setting; Harris & Srinivasan showed similar results for the permutation setting. In this work, we show new bounds on the MT-distribution which are significantly stronger than those known to hold for the LLL-distribution. In the variable-assignment setting, we show a tighter bound on the probability of a disjunctive event or singleton event. As a consequence, in $k$-SAT instances with bounded variable occurrence, the MT-distribution satisfies an $ε$-approximate independence condition asymptotically stronger than the LLL-distribution. We use this to show a nearly tight bound on the minimum implicate size of a CNF boolean formula. Another noteworthy application is constructing independent transversals which avoid a given subset of vertices; this provides a constructive analogue to a result of Rabern (2014). In the permutation LLL setting, we show a new type of bound which is similar to the cluster-expansion LLL criterion of Bissacot et al. (2011), but is stronger and takes advantage of the extra structure in permutations. We illustrate with improved bounds on weighted Latin transversals and partial Latin transversals.
Ewens sampling and invariable generation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the number of random permutations needed to invariably generate the symmetric group, $S_n$, when the distribution of cycle counts has the strong $α$-logarithmic property. The canonical example is the Ewens sampling formula, for which the number of $k$-cycles relates to a conditioned Poisson random variable with mean $α/k$. The special case $α=1$ corresponds to uniformly random permutations, for which it was recently shown that exactly four are needed. For strong $α$-logarithmic measures, and almost every $α$, we show that precisely $\left\lceil ( 1- α\log 2 )^{-1} \right\rceil$ permutations are needed to invariably generate $S_n$. A corollary is that for many other probability measures on $S_n$ no bounded number of permutations will invariably generate $S_n$ with positive probability. Along the way we generalize classic theorems of Erdős, Tehran, Pyber, Luczak and Bovey to permutations obtained from the Ewens sampling formula.
