Bipolar oriented random planar maps with large faces and exotic SLE$_κ(ρ)$ processes
We consider bipolar oriented random planar maps with heavy-tailed face degrees. We show for each $α\in (1,2)$ that if the face degree is in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable Lévy process, the corresponding random planar map has an infinite volume limit in the Benjamini-Schramm topology. We also show in the limit that the properly rescaled contour functions associated with the northwest and southeast trees converge in law to a certain correlated pair of $α$-stable Lévy processes. Combined with other work, this allows us to identify the scaling limit of the planar map with an SLE$_κ(ρ)$ process with $ρ= κ-4 < -2$ on $\sqrtκ$-Liouville quantum gravity for $κ\in (4/3,2)$ where $α, κ$ are related by $α= 4/κ-1$.

Eigenvalues and spectral gap in sparse random simplicial complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the adjacency operator $A$ of the Linial-Meshulam model $X(d,n,p)$ for random $d-$dimensional simplicial complexes on $n$ vertices, where each $d-$cell is added independently with probability $p\in[0,1]$ to the complete $(d-1)$-skeleton. We consider sparse random matrices $H$, which are generalizations of the centered and normalized adjacency matrix $\mathcal{A}:=(np(1-p))^{-1/2}\cdot(A-\mathbb{E}\left[A\right])$, obtained by replacing the Bernoulli$(p)$ random variables used to construct $A$ with arbitrary bounded distribution $Z$. We obtain bounds on the expected Schatten norm of $H$, which allow us to prove results on eigenvalue confinement and in particular that $\left\Vert H\right\Vert _{2}$ converges to $2\sqrt{d}$ both in expectation and $\mathbb{P}-$almost surely as $n\to\infty$, provided that $\mathrm{Var}(Z)\gg\frac{\log n}{n}$. The main ingredient in the proof is a generalization of [LVHY18,Theorem 4.8] to the context of high-dimensional simplicial complexes, which may be regarded as sparse random matrix models with dependent entries.

The Uniform Infinite Cubic Planar Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the random simple cubic planar graph $\mathsf{C}_n$ with an even number $n$ of vertices admits a novel uniform infinite cubic planar graph (UICPG) as quenched local limit. We describe how the limit may be constructed by a series of random blow-up operations applied to the dual map of the type~III Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation established by Angel and Schramm (Comm. Math. Phys., 2003). Our main technical lemma is a contiguity relation between $\mathsf{C}_n$ and a model where the networks inserted at the links of the largest $3$-connected component of $\mathsf{C}_n$ are replaced by independent copies of a specific Boltzmann network. We prove that the number of vertices of the largest $3$-connected component concentrates at $κn$ for $κ\approx 0.85085$, with Airy-type fluctuations of order $n^{2/3}$. The second-largest component is shown to have significantly smaller size $O_p(n^{2/3})$.

Percolation probability and critical exponents for site percolation on the UIPT
We derive three critical exponents for Bernoulli site percolation on the on the Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation (UIPT). First we compute explicitly the probability that the root cluster is infinite. As a consequence, we show that the off-critical exponent for site percolation on the UIPT is $β= 1/2$. Then we establish an integral formula for the generating function of the number of vertices in the root cluster. We use this formula to prove that, at criticality, the probability that the root cluster has at least $n$ vertices decays like $n^{-1/7}$. Finally, we also derive an expression for the law of the perimeter of the root cluster and use it to establish that, at criticality, the probability that the perimeter of the root cluster is equal to $n$ decays like $n^{-4/3}$. Among these three exponents, only the last one was previously known. Our main tools are the so-called gasket decomposition of percolation clusters, generic properties of random Boltzmann maps, as well as analytic combinatorics.

Geometric properties of spin clusters in random triangulations coupled with an Ising Model
We investigate the geometry of a typical spin cluster in random triangulations sampled with a probability proportional to the energy of an Ising configuration on their vertices, both in the finite and infinite volume settings. This model is known to undergo a combinatorial phase transition at an explicit critical temperature, for which its partition function has a different asymptotic behavior than uniform maps. The purpose of this work is to give geometric evidence of this phase transition. In the infinite volume setting, called the Infinite Ising Planar Triangulation, we exhibit a phase transition for the existence of an infinite spin cluster: for critical and supercritical temperatures, the root spin cluster is finite almost surely, while it is infinite with positive probability for subcritical temperatures. Remarkably, we are able to obtain an explicit parametric expression for this probability, which allows to prove that the percolation critical exponent is $β=1/4$. We also derive critical exponents for the tail distribution of the perimeter and of the volume of the root spin cluster, both in the finite and infinite volume settings. Finally, we establish the scaling limit of the interface of the root spin cluster seen as a looptree. In particular in the whole supercritical temperature regime, we prove that the critical exponents and the looptree limit are the same as for critical Bernoulli site percolation. Our proofs mix combinatorial and probabilistic arguments. The starting point is the gasket decomposition, which makes full use of the spatial Markov property of our model. This decomposition enables us to characterize the root spin cluster as a Boltzmann planar map in the finite volume setting. We then combine precise combinatorial results obtained through analytic combinatorics and universal features of Boltzmann maps to establish our results.
From flip processes to dynamical systems on graphons
Published in Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Probab. Statist. 60(4), pages 2878-2922 (November 2024) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a class of random graph processes, which we call flip processes. Each such process is given by a rule which is a function $\mathcal{R}:\mathcal{H}_k\rightarrow \mathcal{H}_k$ from all labeled $k$-vertex graphs into itself ($k$ is fixed). The process starts with a given $n$-vertex graph $G_0$. In each step, the graph $G_i$ is obtained by sampling $k$ random vertices $v_1,\ldots,v_k$ of $G_{i-1}$ and replacing the induced graph $F:=G_{i-1}[v_1,\ldots,v_k]$ by $\mathcal{R}(F)$. This class contains several previously studied processes including the Erdős--Rényi random graph process and the triangle removal process. Actually, our definition of flip processes is more general, in that $\mathcal{R}(F)$ is a probability distribution on $\mathcal{H}_k$, thus allowing randomised replacements. Given a flip process with a rule $\mathcal{R}$, we construct time-indexed trajectories $Φ:\mathcal{W}_0\times [0,\infty)\rightarrow\mathcal{W}_0$ in the space of graphons. We prove that for any $T > 0$ starting with a large finite graph $G_0$ which is close to a graphon $W_0$ in the cut norm, with high probability the flip process will stay in a thin sausage around the trajectory $(Φ(W_0,t))_{t=0}^T$ (after rescaling the time by the square of the order of the graph). These graphon trajectories are then studied from the perspective of dynamical systems. Among others topics, we study continuity properties of these trajectories with respect to time and initial graphon, existence and stability of fixed points and speed of convergence (whenever the infinite time limit exists). We give an example of a flip process with a periodic trajectory.

Cycles in Mallows random permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study cycle counts in permutations of $1,\dots,n$ drawn at random according to the Mallows distribution. Under this distribution, each permutation $π\in S_n$ is selected with probability proportional to $q^{\text{inv}(π)}$, where $q>0$ is a parameter and $\text{inv}(π)$ denotes the number of inversions of $π$. For $\ell$ fixed, we study the vector $(C_1(Π_n),\dots,C_\ell(Π_n))$ where $C_i(π)$ denotes the number of cycles of length $i$ in $π$ and $Π_n$ is sampled according to the Mallows distribution. Here we show that if $0<q<1$ is fixed and $n\to\infty$ then there are positive constants $m_i$ such that each $C_i(Π_n)$ has mean $(1+o(1)) \cdot m_i\cdot n$ and the vector of cycle counts can be suitably rescaled to tend to a joint Gaussian distribution. Our results also show that when $q>1$ there is striking difference between the behaviour of the even and the odd cycles. The even cycle counts still have linear means, and when properly rescaled tend to a multivariate Gaussian distribution. For the odd cycle counts on the other hand, the limiting behaviour depends on the parity of $n$ when $q>1$. Both $(C_1(Π_{2n}),C_3(Π_{2n}),\dots)$ and $(C_1(Π_{2n+1}),C_3(Π_{2n+1}),\dots)$ have discrete limiting distributions -- they do not need to be renormalized -- but the two limiting distributions are distinct for all $q>1$. We describe these limiting distributions in terms of Gnedin and Olshanski's bi-infinite extension of the Mallows model. We also investigate these limiting distributions, and study the behaviour of the constants involved in the Gaussian limit laws. We for example show that as $q\downarrow 1$ the expected number of 1-cycles tends to $1/2$ -- which, curiously, differs from the value corresponding to $q=1$. In addition we exhibit an interesting "oscillating" behaviour in the limiting probability measures for $q>1$ and $n$ odd versus $n$ even.

Random trees have height $O(\sqrt{n})$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain new non-asymptotic tail bounds for the height of uniformly random trees with a given degree sequence, simply generated trees and conditioned Bienaymé trees (the family trees of branching processes), in the process settling three conjectures of Janson (2012) and answering several other questions from the literature. Moreover, we define a partial ordering on degree sequences and show that it induces a stochastic ordering on the heights of uniformly random trees with given degree sequences. The latter result can also be used to show that sub-binary random trees are stochastically the tallest trees with a given number of vertices and leaves (and thus that random binary trees are the stochastically tallest random homeomorphically irreducible trees with a given number of vertices). Our proofs are based in part on the bijection between trees and sequences introduced by Foata and Fuchs (1970), which can be recast to provide a line-breaking construction of random trees with given vertex degrees as shown in Addario-Berry, Blanc-Renaudie, Donderwinkel, Maazoun and Martin (2023).

Tree-degenerate graphs and nested dependent random choice
Published • View PublicationBIB
The celebrated dependent random choice lemma states that in a bipartite graph an average vertex (weighted by its degree) has the property that almost all small subsets $S$ in its neighborhood has common neighborhood almost as large as in the random graph of the same edge-density. Two well-known applications of the lemma are as follows. The first is a theorem of Füredi and of Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov showing that the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph not containing a fixed bipartite graph with maximum degree at most $r$ on one side is $O(n^{2-1/r})$. This was recently extended by Grzesik, Janzer and Nagy to the family of so-called $(r,t)$-blowups of a tree. A second application is a theorem of Conlon, Fox, and Sudakov, confirming a special case of a conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits and of Sidorenko, showing that if $H$ is a bipartite graph that contains a vertex complete to the other part and $G$ is a graph then the probability that the uniform random mapping from $V(H)$ to $V(G)$ is a homomorphismis at least $\left[\frac{2|E(G)|}{|V(G)|^2}\right]^{|E(H)|}$. In this note, we introduce a nested variant of the dependent random choice lemma, which might be of independent interest. We then apply it to obtain a common extension of the theorem of Conlon, Fox, and Sudakov and the theorem of Grzesik, Janzer, and Nagy, regarding Turán and Sidorenko properties of so-called tree-degenerate graphs.

Joint distribution of the cokernels of random $p$-adic matrices
Published in Forum Mathematicum 35 (2023), no. 4, 1005-1020 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the joint distribution of the cokernels of random $p$-adic matrices. Let $p$ be a prime and $P_1(t), \cdots, P_l(t) \in \mathbb{Z}_p[t]$ be monic polynomials whose reductions modulo $p$ in $\mathbb{F}_p[t]$ are distinct and irreducible. We determine the limit of the joint distribution of the cokernels $\text{cok} (P_1(A)), \cdots, \text{cok}(P_l(A))$ for a random $n \times n$ matrix $A$ over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ with respect to Haar measure as $n \rightarrow \infty$. By applying the linearization of a random matrix model, we also provide a conjecture which generalizes this result. Finally, we provide a sufficient condition that the cokernels $\text{cok}(A)$ and $\text{cok}(A+B_n)$ become independent as $n \rightarrow \infty$, where $B_n$ is a fixed $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ for each $n$ and $A$ is a random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_p$.
On the gamma-vector of symmetric edge polytopes
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 37 (2023), no. 2, pp. 487-515 • View PublicationBIB
We study $γ$-vectors associated with $h^*$-vectors of symmetric edge polytopes both from a deterministic and a probabilistic point of view. On the deterministic side, we prove nonnegativity of $γ_2$ for any graph and completely characterize the case when $γ_2 = 0$. The latter also confirms a conjecture by Lutz and Nevo in the realm of symmetric edge polytopes. On the probabilistic side, we show that the $γ$-vectors of symmetric edge polytopes of most Erdős-Rényi random graphs are asymptotically almost surely nonnegative up to any fixed entry. This proves that Gal's conjecture holds asymptotically almost surely for arbitrary unimodular triangulations in this setting.

The sharp form of the Kolmogorov--Rogozin inequality and a conjecture of Leader--Radcliffe
Let $X$ be a random variable and define its concentration function by $$\mathcal{Q}_{h}(X)=\sup_{x\in \mathbb{R}}\mathbb{P}(X\in (x,x+h]).$$ For a sum $S_n=X_1+\cdots+X_n$ of independent real-valued random variables the Kolmogorov-Rogozin inequality states that $$\mathcal{Q}_{h}(S_n)\leq C\left(\sum_{i=1}^{n}(1-\mathcal{Q}_{h}(X_i))\right)^{-\frac{1}{2}}.$$ In this paper we give an optimal bound for $\mathcal{Q}_{h}(S_n)$ in terms of $\mathcal{Q}_{h}(X_i)$, which settles a question posed by Leader and Radcliffe in 1994. Moreover, we show that the extremal distributions are mixtures of two uniform distributions each lying on an arithmetic progression.
Counting Power Domination Sets in Complete m-ary Trees

Motivated by the question of computing the probability of successful power domination by placing k monitors uniformly at random, in this paper we give a recursive formula to count the number of power domination sets of size k in a labeled complete m-ary tree. As a corollary we show that the desired probability can be computed in exponential with linear exponent time.

Generalizations of results of Friedman and Washington on cokernels of random $p$-adic matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $p$ be prime and $X$ be a Haar-random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$, the ring of $p$-adic integers. Let $P_{1}(t), \dots, P_{l}(t) \in \mathbb{Z}_{p}[t]$ be monic polynomials of degree at most $2$ whose images modulo $p$ are distinct and irreducible in $\mathbb{F}_{p}[t]$. For each $j$, let $G_{j}$ be a finite module over $\mathbb{Z}_{p}[t]/(P_{j}(t))$. We show that as $n$ goes to infinity, the probabilities that $\mathrm{cok}(P_{j}(X)) \simeq G_{j}$ are independent, and each probability can be described in terms of a Cohen-Lenstra distribution. We also show that for any fixed $n$, the probability that $\mathrm{cok}(P_{j}(X)) \simeq G_{j}$ for each $j$ is a constant multiple of the probability that that $\mathrm{cok}(P_{j}(\bar{X})) \simeq G_{j}/pG_{j}$ for each $j$, where $\bar{X}$ is an $n \times n$ uniformly random matrix over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$. These results generalize work of Friedman and Washington and prove new cases of a conjecture of Cheong and Huang.
On an approach for evaluating certain trigonometric character sums using the discrete time heat kernel
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we develop a general method by which one can explicitly evaluate certain sums of $n$-th powers of products of $d\geq 1$ elementary trigonometric functions evaluated at $\mathbf{m}=(m_1,\ldots,m_d)$-th roots of unity. Our approach is to first identify the individual terms in the expression under consideration as eigenvalues of a discrete Laplace operator associated to a graph whose vertices form a $d$-dimensional discrete torus $G_{\mathbf{m}}$ which depends on $\mathbf{m}$. The sums in question are then related to the $n$-th step of a Markov chain on $G_{\mathbf{m}}$. The Markov chain admits the interpretation as a particular random walk, also viewed as a discrete time and discrete space heat diffusion, so then the sum in question is related to special values of the associated heat kernel. Our evaluation follows by deriving a combinatorial expression for the heat kernel, which is obtained by periodizing the heat kernel on the infinite lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ which covers $G_{\mathbf{m}}$.

Width deviation of convex polygons
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the width $X_T(ω)$ of a convex $n$-gon $T$ in the plane along the random direction $ω\in\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z}$ and study its deviation rate: $$ δ(X_T)=\frac{\sqrt{\mathbb{E}(X^2_T)-\mathbb{E}(X_T)^2}}{\mathbb{E}(X_T)}. $$ We prove that the maximum is attained if and only if $T$ degenerates to a $2$-gon. Let $n\geq 2$ be an integer which is not a power of $2$. We show that $$ \sqrt{\fracπ{4n\tan(\fracπ{2n})} +\frac{π^2}{8n^2\sin^2(\fracπ{2n})}-1} $$ is the minimum of $δ(X_T)$ among all $n$-gons and determine completely the shapes of $T$'s which attain this minimum. They are characterized as polygonal approximations of equi-Reuleaux bodies, found and studied by K.~Reinhardt. In particular, if $n$ is odd, then the regular $n$-gon is one of the minimum shapes. When $n$ is even, we see that regular $n$-gon is far from optimal. We also observe an unexpected property of the deviation rate on the truncation of the regular triangle.

Automated Counting and Statistical Analysis of Labeled Trees with Degree Restrictions
Arthur Cayley famously proved that there are n to the power n-2 labeled trees on n vertices. Here we go much further and show how to enumerate, fully automatically, labeled trees such that every vertex has a number of neighbors that belongs to a specified finite set, and also count trees where the number of neighbors is not allowed to be in a given finite set. We also give detailed statistical analysis, and show that in the sample space of labeled trees with n vertices, the random variable "number of vertices with d neighbors" is asymptotically normal, and for any different degrees, are jointly asymptotically normal, but of course, not independently so (except for the pair (1,3), i.e. the number of leaves and the number of degree-3 vertices, where there are asymptotically independent). We also give new proofs to Amram Meir and John Noon's expressions for the limiting expectation and variance for these, and derive an explicit expression for the covariance.

Discrete curvature on graphs from the effective resistance
Published in J. Phys. Complex. 3 (2022) 025008 • View PublicationBIB
This article introduces a new approach to discrete curvature based on the concept of effective resistances. We propose a curvature on the nodes and links of a graph and present the evidence for their interpretation as a curvature. Notably, we find a relation to a number of well-established discrete curvatures (Ollivier, Forman, combinatorial curvature) and show evidence for convergence to continuous curvature in the case of Euclidean random graphs. Being both efficient to calculate and highly amenable to theoretical analysis, these resistance curvatures have the potential to shed new light on the theory of discrete curvature and its many applications in mathematics, network science, data science and physics.

Independent sets in random subgraphs of the hypercube
Let $Q_{d,p}$ be the random subgraph of the $d$-dimensional hypercube $\{0,1\}^d$, where each edge is retained independently with probability $p$. We study the asymptotic number of independent sets in $Q_{d,p}$ as $d \to \infty$ for a wide range of parameters $p$, including values of $p$ tending to zero as fast as $\frac{C\log d}{d^{1/3}}$, constant values of $p$, and values of $p$ tending to one. The results extend to the hardcore model on $Q_{d,p}$, and are obtained by studying the closely related antiferromagnetic Ising model on the hypercube, which can be viewed as a positive-temperature hardcore model on the hypercube. These results generalize previous results by Galvin, Jenssen and Perkins on the hard-core model on the hypercube, corresponding to the case $p=1$, which extended Korshunov and Sapozhenko's classical result on the asymptotic number of independent sets in the hypercube.

Universality for low degree factors of random polynomials over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the counts of low degree irreducible factors of a random polynomial $f$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with independent but non-uniform coefficients behave like that of a uniform random polynomial, exhibiting a form of universality for random polynomials over finite fields. Our strongest results require various assumptions on the parameters, but we are able to obtain results requiring only $q=p$ a prime with $p\leq \exp({n^{1/13}})$ where $n$ is the degree of the polynomial. Our proofs use Fourier analysis, and rely on tools recently applied by Breuillard and Varjú to study the $ax+b$ process, which show equidistribution for $f(α)$ at a single point. We extend this to handle multiple roots and the Hasse derivatives of $f$, which allow us to study the irreducible factors with multiplicity.
