Fluid Limits of Pure Jump Markov Processes: a Practical Guide
A rescaled Markov chain converges uniformly in probability to the solution of an ordinary differential equation, under carefully specified assumptions. The presentation is much simpler than those in the outside literature. The result may be used to build parsimonious models of large random or pseudo-random systems.

On the Largest Eigenvalue of a Random Subgraph of the Hypercube
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a random subgraph of the n-cube where each edge appears randomly and independently with probability p. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of G is almost surely λ_1(G)= (1+o(1)) max(Δ^{1/2}(G),np), where Δ(G) is the maximum degree of G and o(1) term tends to zero as max (Δ^{1/2}(G), np) tends to infinity.

Asymptotics of the transition probabilities of the simple random walk on self-similar graphs
It is shown explicitly how self-similar graphs can be obtained as `blow-up' constructions of finite cell graphs $\hat C$. This yields a larger family of graphs than the graphs obtained by discretising continuous self-similar fractals. For a class of symmetrically self-similar graphs we study the simple random walk on a cell graph $\hat C$, starting in a vertex $v$ of the boundary of $\hat C$. It is proved that the expected number of returns to $v$ before hitting another vertex in the boundary coincides with the resistance scaling factor. Using techniques from complex rational iteration and singularity analysis for Green functions we compute the asymptotic behaviour of the $n$-step transition probabilities of the simple random walk on the whole graph. The results of Grabner and Woess for the Sierpiński graph are generalised to the class of symmetrically self-similar graphs and at the same time the error term of the asymptotic expression is improved. Finally we present a criterion for the occurrence of oscillating phenomena of the $n$-step transition probabilities.

On the non-3-colourability of random graphs
We show that for c >= 2.4682, a random graph on n vertices with c n (1+o(1)) edges almost surely has no 3-colouring. This improves on the current best upper bound of 2.4947.

Rectangular Matrix Models and Combinatorics of Colored Graphs
Published in Nucl.Phys. B648 (2003) 461-496 • View Publication • BIB
We present applications of rectangular matrix models to various combinatorial problems, among which the enumeration of face-bicolored graphs with prescribed vertex degrees, and vertex-tricolored triangulations. We also mention possible applications to Interaction-Round-a-Face and hard-particle statistical models defined on random lattices.

Iterating random functions on a finite set
Let f_1,f_2,..., be functions chosen independently and uniformly from the set of all functions from a set of cardinality n into itself. Let g_t be the composition of the first t functions, and let T be the smallest t for which g_t is constant. We find the limiting distribution of T/n, as n --> infinity.

Percolation on finite graphs and isoperimetric inequalities
Published in Annals of Probability 2004, Vol. 32, No. 3, 1727-1745 • View Publication • BIB
Consider a uniform expanders family G_n with a uniform bound on the degrees. It is shown that for any p and c>0, a random subgraph of G_n obtained by retaining each edge, randomly and independently, with probability p, will have at most one cluster of size at least c|G_n|, with probability going to one, uniformly in p. The method from Ajtai, Komlos and Szemeredi [Combinatorica 2 (1982) 1-7] is applied to obtain some new results about the critical probability for the emergence of a giant component in random subgraphs of finite regular expanding graphs of high girth, as well as a simple proof of a result of Kesten about the critical probability for bond percolation in high dimensions. Several problems and conjectures regarding percolation on finite transitive graphs are presented.

Permutation graphs, fast forward permutations, and sampling the cycle structure of a permutation
Published in Journal of Algorithms 47 (2003), 104--121 • View Publication • BIB
A permutation P on {1,..,N} is a_fast_forward_permutation_ if for each m the computational complexity of evaluating P^m(x)$ is small independently of m and x. Naor and Reingold constructed fast forward pseudorandom cycluses and involutions. By studying the evolution of permutation graphs, we prove that the number of queries needed to distinguish a random cyclus from a random permutation on {1,..,N} is Theta(N) if one does not use queries of the form P^m(x), but is only Theta(1) if one is allowed to make such queries. We construct fast forward permutations which are indistinguishable from random permutations even when queries of the form P^m(x) are allowed. This is done by introducing an efficient method to sample the cycle structure of a random permutation, which in turn solves an open problem of Naor and Reingold.
Non-crossing cumulants of type B
Published • View Publication • BIB
We establish connections between the lattices of non-crossing partitions of type B introduced by V. Reiner, and the framework of the free probability theory of D. Voiculescu. Lattices of non-crossing partitions (of type A, up to now) have played an important role in the combinatorics of free probability, primarily via the non-crossing cumulants of R. Speicher. Here we introduce the concept of {\em non-crossing cumulant of type B;} the inspiration for its definition is found by looking at an operation of ``restricted convolution of multiplicative functions'', studied in parallel for functions on symmetric groups (in type A) and on hyperoctahedral groups (in type B). The non-crossing cumulants of type B live in an appropriate framework of ``non-commutative probability space of type B'', and are closely related to a type B analogue for the R-transform of Voiculescu (which is the free probabilistic counterpart of the Fourier transform). By starting from a condition of ``vanishing of mixed cumulants of type B'', we obtain an analogue of type B for the concept of free independence for random variables in a non-commutative probability space.

Random Planar Lattices and Integrated SuperBrownian Excursion
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, a surprising connection is described between a specific brand of random lattices, namely planar quadrangulations, and Aldous' Integrated SuperBrownian Excursion (ISE). As a consequence, the radius r_n of a random quadrangulation with n faces is shown to converge, up to scaling, to the width r=R-L of the support of the one-dimensional ISE. More generally the distribution of distances to a random vertex in a random quadrangulation is described in its scaled limit by the random measure ISE shifted to set the minimum of its support in zero. The first combinatorial ingredient is an encoding of quadrangulations by trees embedded in the positive half-line, reminiscent of Cori and Vauquelin's well labelled trees. The second step relates these trees to embedded (discrete) trees in the sense of Aldous, via the conjugation of tree principle, an analogue for trees of Vervaat's construction of the Brownian excursion from the bridge. From probability theory, we need a new result of independent interest: the weak convergence of the encoding of a random embedded plane tree by two contour walks to the Brownian snake description of ISE. Our results suggest the existence of a Continuum Random Map describing in term of ISE the scaled limit of the dynamical triangulations considered in two-dimensional pure quantum gravity.

On the digraph of a unitary matrix
Published in SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 25, Number 1, pp. 295-300, July 2003 • View Publication • BIB
Given a matrix M of size n, a digraph D on n vertices is said to be the digraph of M, when M_{ij} is different from 0 if and only if (v_{i},v_{j}) is an arc of D. We give a necessary condition, called strong quadrangularity, for a digraph to be the digraph of a unitary matrix. With the use of such a condition, we show that a line digraph, LD, is the digraph of a unitary matrix if and only if D is Eulerian. It follows that, if D is strongly connected and LD is the digraph of a unitary matrix then LD is Hamiltonian. We conclude with some elementary observations. Among the motivations of this paper are coined quantum random walks, and, more generally, discrete quantum evolution on digraphs.

Almost sure convergence of the minimum bipartite matching functional in Euclidean space
Published in Combinatorica 22(4):523-530 (2002) • View Publication • BIB
Let $L_N = L_{MBM}(X_1,..., X_N; Y_1,..., Y_N)$ be the minimum length of a bipartite matching between two sets of points in $\mathbf{R}^d$, where $X_1,..., X_N,...$ and $Y_1,..., Y_N,...$ are random points independently and uniformly distributed in $[0,1]^d$. We prove that for $d \ge 3$, $L_N/N^{1-1/d}$ converges with probability one to a constant $β_{MBM}(d)>0$ as $N\to \infty $.

Increasing subsequences and the hard-to-soft edge transition in matrix ensembles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Our interest is in the cumulative probabilities Pr(L(t) \le l) for the maximum length of increasing subsequences in Poissonized ensembles of random permutations, random fixed point free involutions and reversed random fixed point free involutions. It is shown that these probabilities are equal to the hard edge gap probability for matrix ensembles with unitary, orthogonal and symplectic symmetry respectively. The gap probabilities can be written as a sum over correlations for certain determinantal point processes. From these expressions a proof can be given that the limiting form of Pr(L(t) \le l) in the three cases is equal to the soft edge gap probability for matrix ensembles with unitary, orthogonal and symplectic symmetry respectively, thereby reclaiming theorems due to Baik-Deift-Johansson and Baik-Rains.

Functional central limit theorems for vicious walkers
Published in Stoch. Stoch. Rep. 75 (2003) 369-390 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the diffusion scaling limit of the vicious walker model that is a system of nonintersecting random walks. We prove a functional central limit theorem for the model and derive two types of nonintersecting Brownian motions, in which the nonintersecting condition is imposed in a finite time interval $(0,T]$ for the first type and in an infinite time interval $(0,\infty)$ for the second type, respectively. The limit process of the first type is a temporally inhomogeneous diffusion, and that of the second type is a temporally homogeneous diffusion that is identified with a Dyson's model of Brownian motions studied in the random matrix theory. We show that these two types of processes are related to each other by a multi-dimensional generalization of Imhof's relation, whose original form relates the Brownian meander and the three-dimensional Bessel process. We also study the vicious walkers with wall restriction and prove a functional central limit theorem in the diffusion scaling limit.

A path-transformation for random walks and the Robinson-Schensted correspondence
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 355 (2003) 3669--3697. • View Publication • BIB
In [O'Connell and Yor (2002)] a path-transformation G was introduced with the property that, for X belonging to a certain class of random walks on the integer lattice, the transformed walk G(X) has the same law as that of the original walk conditioned never to exit a type-A Weyl chamber. In this paper, we show that G is closely related to the Robinson-Schensted algorithm, and use this connection to give a new proof of the above representation theorem. The new proof is valid for a larger class of random walks and yields additional information about the joint law of X and G(X). The corresponding results for the Brownian model are recovered by Donsker's theorem. These are connected with Hermitian Brownian motion and the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of random matrix theory. The connection we make between the path-transformation G and the RS algorithm also provides a new formula and interpretation for the latter. This can be used to study properties of the RS algorithm and, moreover, extends easily to a continuous setting.

Green functions on self-similar graphs and bounds for the spectrum of the Laplacian
Combining the study of the simple random walk on graphs, generating functions (especially Green functions), complex dynamics and general complex analysis we introduce a new method of spectral analysis on self-similar graphs. We give an axiomatic definition of self-similar graphs which correspond to general nested but not necessarily finitely ramified fractals. For this class of graphs a graph theoretic analogue to the Banach fixed point theorem is proved. Functional equations and a decomposition algorithm for the Green functions of self-similar graphs with some more symmetric structure are obtained. Their analytic continuations are given by rapidly converging expressions. We study the dynamics of a certain complex rational Green function $d$ on finite directed subgraphs. If the Julia set $\cj$ of $d$ is a Cantor set, then the reciprocal spectrum $\spec^{-1}P=\{1/z\mid z\in\spec P\}$ of the Markov transition operator $P$ can be identified with the set of singularities of any Green function of the whole graph. Finally we get explicit upper and lower bounds for the reciprocal spectrum, where $\cd$ is a countable set of the $d$-backwards iterates of a certain finite set of real numbers.

Qualitative Visualization of Distance Information
Different types of two- and three-dimensional representations of a finite metric space are studied that focus on the accurate representation of the linear order among the distances rather than their actual values. Lower and upper bounds for representability probabilities are produced by experiments including random generation, a rubber-band algorithm for accuracy optimization, and automatic proof generation. It is proved that both farthest neighbour representations and cluster tree representations always exist in the plane. Moreover, a measure of order accuracy is introduced, and some lower bound on the possible accuracy is proved using some clustering method and a result on maximal cuts in graphs.

Critical and Tricritical Hard Objects on Bicolorable Random Lattices: Exact Solutions
Published in J.Phys.A35:3821-3854,2002 • View Publication • BIB
We address the general problem of hard objects on random lattices, and emphasize the crucial role played by the colorability of the lattices to ensure the existence of a crystallization transition. We first solve explicitly the naive (colorless) random-lattice version of the hard-square model and find that the only matter critical point is the non-unitary Lee-Yang edge singularity. We then show how to restore the crystallization transition of the hard-square model by considering the same model on bicolored random lattices. Solving this model exactly, we show moreover that the crystallization transition point lies in the universality class of the Ising model coupled to 2D quantum gravity. We finally extend our analysis to a new two-particle exclusion model, whose regular lattice version involves hard squares of two different sizes. The exact solution of this model on bicolorable random lattices displays a phase diagram with two (continuous and discontinuous) crystallization transition lines meeting at a higher order critical point, in the universality class of the tricritical Ising model coupled to 2D quantum gravity.

A bijective proof of the hook-length formula for shifted standard tableaux
We present a bijective proof of the hook-length formula for shifted standard tableaux of a fixed shape based on a modified jeu de taquin and the ideas of the bijective proof of the hook-length formula for ordinary standard tableaux by Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii. In their proof Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii define a bijection between arbitrary fillings of the Ferrers diagram with the integers $1,2,...,n$ and pairs of standard tableaux and hook tabloids. In our shifted version of their algorithm the map from the set of arbitrary fillings of the shifted Ferrers diagram onto the set of shifted standard tableaux is analog to the construction of Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii, however, unlike to their algorithm, we are forced to use the 'rowwise' total order of the cells in the shifted Ferrers diagram rather than the 'columnwise' total order as the underlying order in the algorithm. Unfortunately the construction of the shifted hook tabloid is more complicated in the shifted case. As a side-result we obtain a simple random algorithm for generating shifted standard tableaux of a given shape, which produces every such tableau equally likely.

Moments of characteristic polynomials enumerate two-rowed lexicographic arrays
Published • View Publication • BIB
A combinatorial interpretation is provided for the moments of characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices. This leads to a rather unexpected consequence of the Keating and Snaith conjecture: the moments of $\midξ(1/2+it)\mid$ turn out to be connected with some increasing subsequences problems (such as the last passage percolation problem).
