Combinatorial Ricci Curvature for Polyhedral Surfaces and Posets
The combinatorial Ricci curvature of Forman, which is defined at the edges of a CW complex, and which makes use of only the face relations of the cells in the complex, does not satisfy an analog of the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem, and does not behave analogously to smooth surfaces with respect to negative curvature. We extend this curvature to vertices and faces in such a way that the problems with combinatorial Ricci curvature are mostly resolved. The discussion is stated in terms of ranked posets.

Splitting Algebras: Koszul, Cohen-Macaulay and Numerically Koszul
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a finite dimensional quadratic graded algebra R defined from a finite ranked poset. This algebra has been central to the study of the splitting algebra of the poset, A, as introduced by Gelfand, Retakh, Serconek and Wilson . The algebra A is known to be quadratic when the poset satisfies a combinatorial condition known as uniform, and R is the quadratic dual of an associated graded algebra of A. We prove that R is Koszul and the poset is uniform if and only if the poset is Cohen-Macaulay. Koszulity of R implies Koszulity of A. We also show that when R is Koszul, the cohomology of the order complex of the poset can be identified with certain cohomology groups defined internally to the ring R. Finally, we settle in the negative the long-standing question: Does numerically Koszul imply Koszul for algebras of the form R?

On the rank function of a differential poset
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 19 (2012), no. 2, P13, 17 pages • View Publication • BIB
We study $r$-differential posets, a class of combinatorial objects introduced in 1988 by the first author, which gathers together a number of remarkable combinatorial and algebraic properties, and generalizes important examples of ranked posets, including the Young lattice. We first provide a simple bijection relating differential posets to a certain class of hypergraphs, including all finite projective planes, which are shown to be naturally embedded in the initial ranks of some differential poset. As a byproduct, we prove the existence, if and only if $r\geq 6$, of $r$-differential posets nonisomorphic in any two consecutive ranks but having the same rank function. We also show that the Interval Property, conjectured by the second author and collaborators for several sequences of interest in combinatorics and combinatorial algebra, in general fails for differential posets. In the second part, we prove that the rank function $p_n$ of any arbitrary $r$-differential poset has nonpolynomial growth; namely, $p_n\gg n^ae^{2\sqrt{rn}},$ a bound very close to the Hardy-Ramanujan asymptotic formula that holds in the special case of Young's lattice. We conclude by posing several open questions.

On Stanley's Inequalities for Character Multiplicities
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a group of automorphisms of a ranked poset Q and let N_{k} denote the number of orbits on the elements of rank k in Q. What can be said about the N_{k} for standard posets, such as finite projective spaces or the Boolean lattice? We discuss the connection of this question to the representation theory of the group, and in particular to the inequalities of Livingstone-Wagner and Stanley. We show that these are special cases of more general inequalities which depend on the prime divisors of the group order. The new inequalities often yield stronger bounds depending on the order of the group.

Symmetric chain decomposition of necklace posets
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 19 (2012) P26 • View Publication • BIB
A finite ranked poset is called a symmetric chain order if it can be written as a disjoint union of rank-symmetric, saturated chains. If $P$ is any symmetric chain order, we prove that $P^n/\mathbb{Z}_n$ is also a symmetric chain order, where $\mathbb{Z}_n$ acts on $P^n$ by cyclic permutation of the factors.

The numbers game and Dynkin diagram classification results
The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain "amplitudes" assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. Combinatorial reasoning is used to show that those connected graphs with negative integer amplitudes for which the numbers game meets a certain finiteness requirement are precisely the Dynkin diagrams associated with the finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. This strengthens a result originally due to the second author. A more general result is obtained when certain real number amplitudes are allowed. The resulting graphs are in families, each family corresponding to a finite irreducible Coxeter group. These results are used to demonstrate that the only generalized Cartan matrices for which there exist finite edge-colored ranked posets enjoying a certain structure property are the Cartan matrices for the finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebras. In this setting, classifications of the finite-dimensional Kac--Moody algebras and of the finite Coxeter and Weyl groups are re-derived.

On rank functions for heaps
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by work of Stembridge, we study rank functions for Viennot's heaps of pieces. We produce a simple and sufficient criterion for a heap to be a ranked poset and apply the results to the heaps arising from fully commutative words in Coxeter groups.
