Polynomial solutions of qKZ equation and ground state of XXZ spin chain at Delta = -1/2
Published • View PublicationBIB
Integral formulae for polynomial solutions of the quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations associated with the R-matrix of the six-vertex model are considered. It is proved that when the deformation parameter q is equal to e^{+- 2 pi i/3} and the number of vertical lines of the lattice is odd, the solution under consideration is an eigenvector of the inhomogeneous transfer matrix of the six-vertex model. In the homogeneous limit it is a ground state eigenvector of the antiferromagnetic XXZ spin chain with the anisotropy parameter Delta equal to -1/2 and odd number of sites. The obtained integral representations for the components of this eigenvector allow to prove some conjectures on its properties formulated earlier. A new statement relating the ground state components of XXZ spin chains and Temperley-Lieb loop models is formulated and proved.

The Hopf Algebra Structure of the Character Rings of Classical Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The character ring \CGL of covariant irreducible tensor representations of the general linear group admits a Hopf algebra structure isomorphic to the Hopf algebra \Sym$ of symmetric functions. Here we study the character rings \CO and \CSp of the orthogonal and symplectic subgroups of the general linear group within the same framework of symmetric functions. We show that \CO and \CSp also admit natural Hopf algebra structures that are isomorphic to that of \CGL, and hence to \Sym. The isomorphisms are determined explicitly, along with the specification of standard bases for \CO and \CSp analogous to those used for \Sym. A major structural change arising from the adoption of these bases is the introduction of new orthogonal and symplectic Schur-Hall scalar products. Significantly, the adjoint with respect to multiplication no longer coincides, as it does in the \CGL case, with a Foulkes derivative or skew operation. The adjoint and Foulkes derivative now require separate definitions, and their properties are explored here in the orthogonal and symplectic cases. Moreover, the Hopf algebras \CO and \CSp are not self-dual. The dual Hopf algebras \CO^* and \CSp^* are identified. Finally, the Hopf algebra of the universal rational character ring \CGLrat of mixed irreducible tensor representations of the general linear group is introduced and its structure maps identified.

Mediatic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Any medium can be represented as an isometric subgraph of the hypercube, with each token of the medium represented by a particular equivalence class of arcs of the subgraph. Such a representation, although useful, is not especially revealing of the structure of a particular medium. We propose an axiomatic definition of the concept of a `mediatic graph'. We prove that the graph of any medium is a mediatic graph. We also show that, for any non-necessarily finite set S, there exists a bijection from the collection M of all the media on a given set S (of states) onto the collection G of all the mediatic graphs on S.

Sparse Hypergraphs and Pebble Game Algorithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
A hypergraph $G=(V,E)$ is $(k,\ell)$-sparse if no subset $V'\subset V$ spans more than $k|V'|-\ell$ hyperedges. We characterize $(k,\ell)$-sparse hypergraphs in terms of graph theoretic, matroidal and algorithmic properties. We extend several well-known theorems of Haas, Lov{á}sz, Nash-Williams, Tutte, and White and Whiteley, linking arboricity of graphs to certain counts on the number of edges. We also address the problem of finding lower-dimensional representations of sparse hypergraphs, and identify a critical behaviour in terms of the sparsity parameters $k$ and $\ell$. Our constructions extend the pebble games of Lee and Streinu from graphs to hypergraphs.

Tropicalization of group representations
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 8 (2008) 279-307 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give an interpretation to the boundary points of the compactification of the parameter space of convex projective structures on an n-manifold M. These spaces are closed semi-algebraic subsets of the variety of characters of representations of the fundamental group of M in SL_{n+1}(R). The boundary was constructed as the tropicalization of this semi-algebraic set. Here we show that the geometric interpretation for the points of the boundary can be constructed searching for a tropical analogue to an action of the group on a projective space. To do this we need to construct a tropical projective space with many invertible projective maps. We achieve this using a generalization of the Bruhat-Tits buildings for SL_{n+1} to non-archimedean fields with real surjective valuation. In the case n = 1 these objects are the real trees used by Morgan and Shalen to describe the boundary points for the Teichmuller spaces. In the general case they are contractible metric spaces with a structure of tropical projective spaces.

Bimahonian distributions

Motivated by permutation statistics, we define for any complex reflection group W a family of bivariate generating functions. They are defined either in terms of Hilbert series for W-invariant polynomials when W acts diagonally on two sets of variables, or equivalently, as sums involving the fake degrees of irreducible representations for W. It is also shown that they satisfy a ``bicyclic sieving phenomenon'', which combinatorially interprets their values when the two variables are set equal to certain roots of unity.

Product decompositions of quasirandom groups and a Jordan type theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We first note that a result of Gowers on product-free sets in groups has an unexpected consequence: If k is the minimal degree of a representation of the finite group G, then for every subset B of G with $|B| > |G| / k^{1/3}$ we have B^3 = G. We use this to obtain improved versions of recent deep theorems of Helfgott and of Shalev concerning product decompositions of finite simple groups, with much simpler proofs. On the other hand, we prove a version of Jordan's theorem which implies that if k>1, then G has a proper subgroup of index at most ck^2 for some absolute constant c, hence a product-free subset of size at least $|G| / c'k$. This answers a question of Gowers.

Coxeter Elements and Periodic Auslander-Reiten Quiver
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we show that for a simply-laced root system a choice of $C$ gives rise to a natural construction of the Dynkin diagram, in which vertices of the diagram correspond to $C$-orbits in $R$; moreover, it gives an identification of $R$ with a certain subset $Ihat$ of $I x Z_{2h}$, where $h$ is the Coxeter number. The set $Ihat$ has a natural quiver structure; we call it the periodic Auslander-Reiten quiver. This gives a combinatorial construction of the root system associated with the Dynkin diagram $I$: roots are vertices of $Ihat$, and the root lattice and the inner product admit an explicit description in terms of $Ihat$. Finally, we relate this construction to the theory of quiver representations.

The Combinatorics of the Garsia-Haiman Modules for Hook Shapes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Several bases of the Garsia-Haiman modules for hook shapes are given, as well as combinatorial decomposition rules for these modules. These bases and rules extend the classical ones for the coinvariant algebra of type $A$. We also give a decomposition of the Garsia-Haiman modules into descent representations.

Inverse Semigroups and Combinatorial C*-Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe a special class of representations of an inverse semigroup S on Hilbert's space which we term "tight". These representations are supported on a subset of the spectrum of the idempotent semilattice of S, called the "tight spectrum", which is in turn shown to be precisely the closure of the space of ultra-filters, once filters are identified with semicharacters in a natural way. These representations are moreover shown to correspond to representations of the C*-algebra of the groupoid of germs for the action of S on its tight spectrum. We then treat the case of certain inverse semigroups constructed from a semigroupoid, generalizing and inspired by inverse semigroups constructed from ordinary and higher rank graphs. The tight representations of this inverse semigroup are in one-to-one correspondence with representations of the semigroupoid, and the semigroupoid algebra is given a groupoid model. The groupoid which arises from this construction is shown to be the same as the boundary path groupoid of Farthing, Muhly and Yeend, at least in the singly aligned, sourceless case.

Quiver varieties, category O for rational Cherednik algebras, and Hecke algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We relate the representations of the rational Cherednik algebras associated with the complex reflection group G(m,1,n) to sheaves on Nakajima quiver varieties associated with extended Dynkin gaphs via a Z-algebra construction. As the parameters defining the Cherednik algebra vary, the stability conditions defining the quiver variety change. We interpret the ordering on category O geometrically using this relationship; we also relate the geometry to the a-function for Hecke algebras with unequal parameters.
Polynomials that Sign Represent Parity and Descartes' Rule of Signs
Published in Comput. Complexity, 17 (2008) 377-406 • View PublicationBIB
A real polynomial $P(X_1,..., X_n)$ sign represents $f: A^n \to \{0,1\}$ if for every $(a_1, ..., a_n) \in A^n$, the sign of $P(a_1,...,a_n)$ equals $(-1)^{f(a_1,...,a_n)}$. Such sign representations are well-studied in computer science and have applications to computational complexity and computational learning theory. In this work, we present a systematic study of tradeoffs between degree and sparsity of sign representations through the lens of the parity function. We attempt to prove bounds that hold for any choice of set $A$. We show that sign representing parity over $\{0,...,m-1\}^n$ with the degree in each variable at most $m-1$ requires sparsity at least $m^n$. We show that a tradeoff exists between sparsity and degree, by exhibiting a sign representation that has higher degree but lower sparsity. We show a lower bound of $n(m -2) + 1$ on the sparsity of polynomials of any degree representing parity over $\{0,..., m-1\}^n$. We prove exact bounds on the sparsity of such polynomials for any two element subset $A$. The main tool used is Descartes' Rule of Signs, a classical result in algebra, relating the sparsity of a polynomial to its number of real roots. As an application, we use bounds on sparsity to derive circuit lower bounds for depth-two AND-OR-NOT circuits with a Threshold Gate at the top. We use this to give a simple proof that such circuits need size $1.5^n$ to compute parity, which improves the previous bound of ${4/3}^{n/2}$ due to Goldmann (1997). We show a tight lower bound of $2^n$ for the inner product function over $\{0,1\}^n \times \{0, 1\}^n$.

This is a translation into English of a paper written in French, published in Tatra Mountains Mathematical Publications, {L'ultrafiltre, un outil incomparable}, Tatra Mt. Math. Publ. {\bf 31} (2005), 131-176.It was also posted as {arXiv:math/0702587v1} [math.HO] 20 Feb 2007. This paper was meant for a series of talks at the Bratislava Workshop on the density concept, May 2004. A number of the very many facets of ultrafilters are reviewed (some of them, a bit cursorily, as is to be expected in a short space, and time) including Condorcet's Paradox, ultraproducts and the theory of infinitesimals (non-standard analysis), Banach generalized limits in sequence spaces, Choquet's limits for families of closed sets in general topology and intrinsic geometry, representations of topologies as binary relations among ultrafilters, additive bases in number theory.
Representation Theory of Finite Semigroups, Semigroup Radicals and Formal Language Theory

In this paper we characterize the congruence associated to the direct sum of all irreducible representations of a finite semigroup over an arbitrary field, generalizing results of Rhodes for the field of complex numbers. Applications are given to obtain many new results, as well as easier proofs of several results in the literature, involving: triangularizability of finite semigroups; which semigroups have (split) basic semigroup algebras, two-sided semidirect product decompositions of finite monoids; unambiguous products of rational languages; products of rational languages with counter; and Černý's conjecture for an important class of automata.

Infinitely Often Dense Bases of Integers with a Prescribed Representation Function
Published • View PublicationBIB
Nathanson constructed asymptotic bases for the integers with a prescribed representation function, then asked how dense they can be. We can easily obtain an upper bound using a simple argument. In this paper, we will see this is indeed the best bound we can get for asymptotic bases for the integers with an arbitrary representation function prescribed.

Three combinatorial models for affine sl(n) crystals, with applications to cylindric plane partitions
Published in Math. Res. Not. IMRN 2008(2):Art. ID rnm143, 40, 2008 • View PublicationBIB
We define three combinatorial models for \hat{sl(n)} crystals, parametrized by partitions, configurations of beads on an `abacus', and cylindric plane partitions, respectively. These are reducible, but we can identify an irreducible subcrystal corresponding to any dominant integral highest weight. Cylindric plane partitions actually parametrize a basis for the tensor product of an irreducible representation with the space spanned by all partitions. We use this to calculate the partition function for a system of random cylindric plane partitions. We also observe a form of rank level duality. Finally, we use an explicit bijection to relate our work to the Kyoto path model.

Factorials as sums
In this paper we give an additive representation of the factorial, which can be proven by a simple quick analytical argument. We also present some generalizations, which are linked, on the one hand to an arithmetical theorem proven by Euler (decomposition of primes as the sum of two squares), and, on the other hand, to modern combinatorics (Stirling numbers).

n-Ary quasigroups of order 4
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 23(2) 2009, 561-570 • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the set of all N-ary quasigroups of order 4: every N-ary quasigroup of order 4 is permutably reducible or semilinear. Permutable reducibility means that an N-ary quasigroup can be represented as a composition of K-ary and (N-K+1)-ary quasigroups for some K from 2 to N-1, where the order of arguments in the representation can differ from the original order. The set of semilinear N-ary quasigroups has a characterization in terms of Boolean functions. Keywords: Latin hypercube, n-ary quasigroup, reducibility
