On the Schur expansion of Hall-Littlewood and related polynomials via Yamanouchi words
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper uses the theory of dual equivalence graphs to give explicit Schur expansions for several families of symmetric functions. We begin by giving a combinatorial definition of the modified Macdonald polynomials and modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by any diagram $δ\subset {\mathbb Z} \times {\mathbb Z}$, written as $\widetilde H_δ(X;q,t)$ and $\widetilde H_δ(X;0,t)$, respectively. We then give an explicit Schur expansion of $\widetilde H_δ(X;0,t)$ as a sum over a subset of the Yamanouchi words, as opposed to the expansion using the charge statistic given in 1978 by Lascoux and Schüztenberger. We further define the symmetric function $R_{γ,δ}(X)$ as a refinement of $\widetilde H_δ(X;0,t)$ and similarly describe its Schur expansion. We then analyze $R_{γ,δ}(X)$ to determine the leading term of its Schur expansion. We also provide a conjecture towards the Schur expansion of $\widetilde H_δ(X;q,t)$. To gain these results, we use a construction from the 2007 work of Sami Assaf to associate each Macdonald polynomial with a signed colored graph $\mathcal{H}_δ$. In the case where a subgraph of $\mathcal{H}_δ$ is a dual equivalence graph, we provide the Schur expansion of its associated symmetric function, yielding several corollaries.

Dual Equivalence Graphs Revisited and the Explicit Schur Expansion of a Family of LLT Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2007 Sami Assaf introduced dual equivalence graphs as a method for demonstrating that a quasisymmetric function is Schur positive. The method involves the creation of a graph whose vertices are weighted by Ira Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions so that the sum of the weights of a connected component is a single Schur function. In this paper, we improve on Assaf's axiomatization of such graphs, giving locally testable criteria that are more easily verified by computers. We further advance the theory of dual equivalence graphs by describing a broader class of graphs that correspond to an explicit Schur expansion in terms of Yamanouchi words. Along the way, we demonstrate several symmetries in the structure of dual equivalence graphs. We then apply these techniques to give explicit Schur expansions for a family of Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon polynomials. This family properly contains the previously known case of polynomials indexed by two skew shapes, as was described in a 1995 paper by Christophe Carré and Bernard Leclerc. As an immediate corollary, we gain an explicit Schur expansion for a family of modified Macdonald polynomials in terms of Yamanouchi words. This family includes all polynomials indexed by shapes with at most three cells in the first row and at most two cells in the second row, providing an extension to the combinatorial description of the two column case described in 2005 by James Haglund, Mark Haiman, and Nick Loehr.
Maximal supports and Schur-positivity among connected skew shapes
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 33 (6) (2012), 1190-1206 • View PublicationBIB
The Schur-positivity order on skew shapes is defined by B \leq A if the difference s_A - s_B is Schur-positive. It is an open problem to determine those connected skew shapes that are maximal with respect to this ordering. A strong necessary condition for the Schur-positivity of s_A - s_B is that the support of B is contained in that of A, where the support of B is defined to be the set of partitions lambda for which s_lambda appears in the Schur expansion of s_B. We show that to determine the maximal connected skew shapes in the Schur-positivity order and this support containment order, it suffices to consider a special class of ribbon shapes. We explicitly determine the support for these ribbon shapes, thereby determining the maximal connected skew shapes in the support containment order.

Dual equivalence and Schur positivity
We define dual equivalence for any collection of combinatorial objects endowed with a descent set, and we show that giving a dual equivalence establishes the symmetry and Schur positivity of the quasi-symmetric generating function. We give an explicit formula for the Schur expansion of the generating function in terms of distinguished elements of the dual equivalence classes. These concepts and proofs simplify in the ubiquitous case when the collection of objects has a sufficiently nice reading word.

Multiplicity-free Skew Schur functions with full interval support
It is known that the Schur expansion of a skew Schur function runs over the interval of partitions, equipped with dominance order, defined by the least and the most dominant Littlewood-Richardson filling of the skew shape. We characterise skew Schur functions (and therefore the product of two Schur functions) which are multiplicity-free and the resulting Schur expansion runs over the whole interval of partitions, i.e. skew Schur functions having Littlewood-Richardson coefficients always equal to $1$ over the full interval.
k-shape poset and branching of k-Schur functions

We give a combinatorial expansion of a Schubert homology class in the affine Grassmannian Gr_{SL_k} into Schubert homology classes in Gr_{SL_{k+1}}. This is achieved by studying the combinatorics of a new class of partitions called k-shapes, which interpolates between k-cores and k+1-cores. We define a symmetric function for each k-shape, and show that they expand positively in terms of dual k-Schur functions. We obtain an explicit combinatorial description of the expansion of an ungraded k-Schur function into k+1-Schur functions. As a corollary, we give a formula for the Schur expansion of an ungraded k-Schur function.

Dual equivalence graphs and a combinatorial proof of LLT and Macdonald positivity
We make a systematic study of a new combinatorial construction called a dual equivalence graph. We axiomatize these graphs and prove that their generating functions are symmetric and Schur positive. By constructing a graph on ribbon tableaux which we transform into a dual equivalence graph, we give a combinatorial proof of the symmetry and Schur positivity of the ribbon tableaux generating functions introduced by Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon. Using Haglund's formula for the transformed Macdonald polynomials, this also gives a combinatorial formula for the Schur expansion of Macdonald polynomials.

The shifted plactic monoid
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a shifted analog of the plactic monoid of Lascoux and Schützenberger, the \emph{shifted plactic monoid}. It can be defined in two different ways: via the \emph{shifted Knuth relations}, or using Haiman's mixed insertion. Applications include: a new combinatorial derivation (and a new version of) the shifted Littlewood-Richardson Rule; similar results for the coefficients in the Schur expansion of a Schur $P$-function; a shifted counterpart of the Lascoux-Schützenberger theory of noncommutative Schur functions in plactic variables; a characterization of shifted tableau words; and more.

Tableaux on k+1-cores, reduced words for affine permutations, and k-Schur expansions

The $k$-Young lattice $Y^k$ is a partial order on partitions with no part larger than $k$. This weak subposet of the Young lattice originated from the study of the $k$-Schur functions(atoms) $s_λ^{(k)}$, symmetric functions that form a natural basis of the space spanned by homogeneous functions indexed by $k$-bounded partitions. The chains in the $k$-Young lattice are induced by a Pieri-type rule experimentally satisfied by the $k$-Schur functions. Here, using a natural bijection between $k$-bounded partitions and $k+1$-cores, we establish an algorithm for identifying chains in the $k$-Young lattice with certain tableaux on $k+1$ cores. This algorithm reveals that the $k$-Young lattice is isomorphic to the weak order on the quotient of the affine symmetric group $\tilde S_{k+1}$ by a maximal parabolic subgroup. From this, the conjectured $k$-Pieri rule implies that the $k$-Kostka matrix connecting the homogeneous basis $\{h_\la\}_{\la\in\CY^k}$ to $\{s_\la^{(k)}\}_{\la\in\CY^k}$ may now be obtained by counting appropriate classes of tableaux on $k+1$-cores. This suggests that the conjecturally positive $k$-Schur expansion coefficients for Macdonald polynomials (reducing to $q,t$-Kostka polynomials for large $k$) could be described by a $q,t$-statistic on these tableaux, or equivalently on reduced words for affine permutations.
