Congruences involving binomial coefficients and Apéry-like numbers
Published in Publ. Math. Debrecen 96(2020), no.3-4, 315-346 • Search Publication
For $n=0,1,2,\ldots$ let $W_n=\sum_{k=0}^{[n/3]}\binom{2k}k \binom{3k}k\binom n{3k}(-3)^{n-3k}$, where $[x]$ is the greatest integer not exceeding $x$. Then $\{W_n\}$ is an Apéry-like sequence. In this paper we deduce many congruences involving $\{W_n\}$, in particular we determine $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom{2k}k\frac{W_k}{m^k}\pmod p$ for $m=-640332,-5292,-972,-108,-44,-27,-12,8,54,243$ by using binary quadratic forms, where $p>3$ is a prime. We also prove several congruences for generalized Apéry-like numbers, and pose 29 challenging conjectures on congruences involving binomial coefficients and Apéry-like numbers.

Generalized Eulerian Triangles and Some Special Production Matrices
We show how some special production matrices may be used to define families of generalized Eulerian triangles. We furthermore show that these generalized Eulerian triangles are the coefficient arrays of polynomials which are the moments of families of orthogonal polynomials. Using the previously defined $\mathcal{T}$ transform, we associate these generalized Eulerian triangles to triangles defined by Catalan generating functions. Again, these new triangles are the coefficient arrays of polynomial moment sequences. The main tools used are the Sumudu transform, Jacobi continued fractions and Riordan arrays.

The $1/k$-Eulerian Polynomials as Moments, via Exponential Riordan Arrays
Using the theory of exponential Riordan arrays, we show that the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials are moments for a paramaterized family of orthogonal polynomials. In addition, we show that the related Savage-Viswanathan polynomials are also moments for appropriate families of orthogonal polynomials. We provide continued fraction ordinary generating functions and Hankel transforms for these moments, as well as the three-term recurrences for the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. We provide formulas for the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials and the Savage-Viswanathan polynomials involving the Stirling numbers of the first and the second kind. Finally we show that the once-shifted polynomials are again moment sequences.

Induced nets and Hamiltonicity of claw-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The connected graph of degree sequence 3,3,3,1,1,1 is called a net, and the vertices of degree 1 in a net is called its endvertices. Broersma conjectured in 1993 that a 2-connected graph G with no induced K_{1,3} is hamiltonian if every endvertex of each induced net of G has degree at least (|V(G)|-2)/3. In this paper we prove this conjecture in the affirmative.
The $\{1,s\}$-weighted Davenport constant in $C_n^k$
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group and let $\varnothing \neq A \subset \mathbb Z$. The $A$-weighted Davenport constant of $G$ is the smallest positive integer ${\sf D}_A(G)$ such that every sequence $x_1 \boldsymbol{\cdot} {\dots} \boldsymbol{\cdot} x_{{\sf D}_A(G)}$ over $G$ has a non-empty subsequence $(x_{j_i})_i$ such that ${\varepsilon_1} x_{j_1} + {\varepsilon_2} x_{j_2} + {\dots} + {\varepsilon_t} x_{j_t} = 0$ for some $\varepsilon_1, \varepsilon_2, {\dots}, \varepsilon_t \in A$. In this paper, we obtain both upper and lower bounds for ${\sf D}_{\{1,s\}}(C_n^k)$, where $C_n$ denotes the cyclic group of order $n$, $s^2 \equiv 1 \pmod n$ and $s \not\equiv \pm1 \pmod n$. These bounds become sharp in some "small" cases.

Logarithmic girth expander graphs of $SL_n(\mathbb F_p)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide an explicit construction of finite 4-regular graphs $(Γ_k)_{k\in \mathbb N}$ with ${girth Γ_k\to\infty}$ as $k\to\infty$ and $\frac{diam Γ_k}{girth Γ_k}\leqslant D$ for some $D>0$ and all $k\in\mathbb{N}$. For each fixed dimension $n\geqslant 2,$ we find a pair of matrices in $SL_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$ such that (i) they generate a free subgroup, (ii)~their reductions $\bmod\, p$ generate $SL_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$ for all sufficiently large primes $p$, (iii) the corresponding Cayley graphs of $SL_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$ have girth at least $c_n\log p$ for some $c_n>0$. Relying on growth results (with no use of expansion properties of the involved graphs), we observe that the diameter of those Cayley graphs is at most $O(\log p)$. This gives infinite sequences of finite $4$-regular Cayley graphs of $SL_n(\mathbb F_p)$ as $p\to\infty$ with large girth and bounded diameter-by-girth ratio. These are the first explicit examples in all dimensions $n\geqslant 2$ (all prior examples were in $n=2$). Moreover, they happen to be expanders. Together with Margulis' and Lubotzky-Phillips-Sarnak's classical constructions, these new graphs are the only known explicit logarithmic girth Cayley graph expanders.

Nilspace factors for general uniformity seminorms, cubic exchangeability and limits
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a class of measure-theoretic objects that we call cubic couplings, on which there is a common generalization of the Gowers norms and the Host-Kra seminorms. Our main result yields a complete structural description of cubic couplings, using nilspaces. We give three applications. Firstly, we describe the characteristic factors of Host-Kra type seminorms for measure-preserving actions of countable nilpotent groups. This yields an extension of the structure theorem of Host and Kra. Secondly, we characterize sequences of random variables with a property that we call cubic exchangeability. These are sequences indexed by the infinite discrete cube, such that for every integer $k\geq 0$ the joint distribution's marginals on affine subcubes of dimension $k$ are all equal. In particular, our result gives a description, in terms of compact nilspaces, of a related exchangeability property considered by Austin, inspired by a problem of Aldous. Finally, using nilspaces we obtain limit objects for sequences of functions on compact abelian groups (more generally on compact nilspaces) such that the densities of certain patterns in these functions converge. The paper thus proposes a measure-theoretic framework on which the area of higher-order Fourier analysis can be based, and which yields new applications of this area in a unified way in ergodic theory and arithmetic combinatorics.

Enumeration of super-strong Wilf equivalence classes of permutations in the generalized factor order
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 2, Permutation Patters 2018, Permutation Patterns (November 11, 2019) dmtcs:5055 • View PublicationBIB
Super-strong Wilf equivalence classes of the symmetric group ${\mathcal S}_n$ on $n$ letters, with respect to the generalized factor order, were shown by Hadjiloucas, Michos and Savvidou (2018) to be in bijection with pyramidal sequences of consecutive differences. In this article we enumerate the latter by giving recursive formulae in terms of a two-dimensional analogue of non-interval permutations. As a by-product, we obtain a recursively defined set of representatives of super-strong Wilf equivalence classes in ${\mathcal S}_n$. We also provide a connection between super-strong Wilf equivalence and the geometric notion of shift equivalence---originally defined by Fidler, Glasscock, Miceli, Pantone, and Xu (2018) for words---by showing that an alternate way to characterize super-strong Wilf equivalence for permutations is by keeping only rigid shifts in the definition of shift equivalence. This allows us to fully describe shift equivalence classes for permutations of size $n$ and enumerate them, answering the corresponding problem posed by Fidler, Glasscock, Miceli, Pantone, and Xu (2018).

Constructing de Bruijn sequences by concatenating smaller universal cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present sufficient conditions for when an ordering of universal cycles $α_1, α_2, \ldots, α_m$ for disjoint sets $\mathbf{S}_1, \mathbf{S}_2, \ldots , \mathbf{S}_m$ can be concatenated together to obtain a universal cycle for $\mathbf{S} = \mathbf{S}_1 \cup \mathbf{S}_2 \cup \cdots \cup \mathbf{S}_m$. When $\mathbf{S}$ is the set of all $k$-ary strings of length $n$, the result of such a successful construction is a de Bruijn sequence. Our conditions are applied to generalize two previously known de Bruijn sequence constructions and then they are applied to develop three new de Bruijn sequence constructions.

The Harborth Constant of Dihedral Groups
The Harborth constant of a finite group $G$, denoted $\gs(G)$, is the smallest integer $k$ such that the following holds: For $A\subseteq G$ with $|A|=k$, there exists $B\subseteq A$ with $|B|=\exp(G)$ such that the elements of $B$ can be rearranged into a sequence whose product equals $1_G$, the identity element of $G$. The Harborth constant is a well studied combinatorial invariant in the case of abelian groups. In this paper, we consider a generalization $\gs(G)$ of this combinatorial invariant for nonabelian groups and prove that if $G$ is a dihedral group of order $2n$ with $n\ge 3$, then $\gs(G) = n + 2$ if $n$ is even and $\gs(G) = 2n + 1$ otherwise.

Liminal reciprocity and factorization statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $M_{d,n}(q)$ denote the number of monic irreducible polynomials in $\mathbb{F}_q[x_1, x_2, \ldots , x_n]$ of degree $d$. We show that for a fixed degree $d$, the sequence $M_{d,n}(q)$ converges $q$-adically to an explicitly determined rational function $M_{d,\infty}(q)$. Furthermore we show that the limit $M_{d,\infty}(q)$ is related to the classic necklace polynomial $M_{d,1}(q)$ by an involutive functional equation, leading to a phenomenon we call liminal reciprocity. The limiting first moments of factorization statistics for squarefree polynomials are expressed in terms of a family of symmetric group representations as a consequence of liminal reciprocity.

A Coloring Book Approach to Finding Coordination Sequences
Published in Acta Crystallographica Section A: Foundations and Advances, 2019, Volume A75, pages 121-134 • View PublicationBIB
An elementary method is described for finding the coordination sequences for a tiling, based on coloring the underlying graph. We illustrate the method by first applying it to the two kinds of vertices (tetravalent and trivalent) in the Cairo (or dual-3^2.4.3.4) tiling. The coordination sequence for a tetravalent vertex turns out, surprisingly, to be 1, 4, 8 ,12, 16, ..., the same as for a vertex in the familiar square (or 4^4) tiling. We thought that such a simple fact should have a simple proof, and this article is the result. We also apply the method to obtain coordination sequences for the 3^2.4.3.4, 3.4.6.4, 4.8^2, 3.12^2, and 3^4.6 uniform tilings, as well as the snub-632 and bew tilings. In several cases the results provide proofs for previously conjectured formulas.

A George Szekeres Formula for Restricted Partitions
We derive an asymptotic formula for $A(n,j,r)$ the number of integer partitions of $n$ into at most $j$ parts each part $\le r$. We assume $j$ and $r$ are near their mean values. We also investigate the second largest part, the number of parts $\ge 2$, etc. We show that the fraction of the partitions of an even integer $n$ that are graphical, ie. whose parts form the degree sequence of a simple graph, is $O(\ln^{-1/2} n)$. Probabilistic results are used in our discussion of graphical partitions. The George Szekeres circle method is essential for our asymptotic results on partitions. We determine the distributions defined by the successive ranks of partitions, generalizing the result of Erdos and Richmond for the rank of a partition.

A family of Bell transformations
Published in Discrete Math. 342 (2019), no. 1, 38-54 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a family of sequence transformations, defined via partial Bell polynomials, that may be used for a systematic study of a wide variety of problems in enumerative combinatorics. This family includes some of the transformations listed in the paper by Bernstein & Sloane, now seen as transformations under the umbrella of partial Bell polynomials. Our goal is to describe these transformations from the algebraic and combinatorial points of view. We provide functional equations satisfied by the generating functions, derive inverse relations, and give a convolution formula. While the full range of applications remains unexplored, in this paper we show a glimpse of the versatility of Bell transformations by discussing the enumeration of several combinatorial configurations, including rational Dyck paths, rooted planar maps, and certain classes of permutations.

On the Alon-Tarsi Number and Chromatic-choosability of Cartesian Products of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the list chromatic number of Cartesian products of graphs through the Alon-Tarsi number as defined by Jensen and Toft (1995) in their seminal book on graph coloring problems. The Alon-Tarsi number of $G$, $AT(G)$, is the smallest $k$ for which there is an orientation, $D$, of $G$ with max indegree $k\!-\!1$ such that the number of even and odd circulations contained in $D$ are different. It is known that $χ(G) \leq χ_\ell(G) \leq χ_p(G) \leq AT(G)$, where $χ(G)$ is the chromatic number, $χ_\ell(G)$ is the list chromatic number, and $χ_p(G)$ is the paint number of $G$. In this paper we find families of graphs $G$ and $H$ such that $χ(G \square H) = AT(G \square H)$, reducing this sequence of inequalities to equality. We show that the Alon-Tarsi number of the Cartesian product of an odd cycle and a path is always equal to 3. This result is then extended to show that if $G$ is an odd cycle or a complete graph and $H$ is a graph on at least two vertices containing the Hamilton path $w_1, w_2, \ldots, w_n$ such that for each $i$, $w_i$ has a most $k$ neighbors among $w_1, w_2, \ldots, w_{i-1}$, then $AT(G \square H) \leq Δ(G)+k$ where $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. We discuss other extensions for $G \square H$, where $G$ is such that $V(G)$ can be partitioned into odd cycles and complete graphs, and $H$ is a graph containing a Hamiltonian path. We apply these bounds to get chromatic-choosable Cartesian products, in fact we show that these families of graphs have $χ(G) = AT(G)$, improving previously known bounds.

Cyclic Sieving and Cluster Duality of Grassmannian
Published in SIGMA 16 (2020), 067, 41 pages • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a decorated configuration space $\mathscr{C}\!{\rm onf}_n^\times(a)$ with a potential function $\mathcal{W}$. We prove the cluster duality conjecture of Fock-Goncharov for Grassmannians, that is, the tropicalization of $\big(\mathscr{C}\!{\rm onf}_n^\times(a), \mathcal{W}\big)$ canonically parametrizes a linear basis of the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}_a(n)$ with respect to the Plücker embedding. We prove that $\big(\mathscr{C}\!{\rm onf}_n^\times(a), \mathcal{W}\big)$ is equivalent to the mirror Landau-Ginzburg model of the Grassmannian considered by Eguchi-Hori-Xiong, Marsh-Rietsch and Rietsch-Williams. As an application, we show a cyclic sieving phenomenon involving plane partitions under a sequence of piecewise-linear toggles.
Descent distribution on Catalan words avoiding a pattern of length at most three
Published • View PublicationBIB
Catalan words are particular growth-restricted words over the set of non-negative integers, and they represent still another combinatorial class counted by the Catalan numbers. We study the distribution of descents on the sets of Catalan words avoiding a pattern of length at most three: for each such a pattern $p$ we provide a bivariate generating function where the coefficient of $x^ny^k$ in its series expansion is the number of length $n$ Catalan words with $k$ descents and avoiding $p$. As a byproduct, we enumerate the set of Catalan words avoiding $p$, and we provide the popularity of descents on this set. Some of the obtained enumerating sequences are not yet recorded in the On-line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

Three Études on a sequence transformation pipeline
We study a sequence transformation pipeline that maps certain sequences with rational generating functions to permutation-based sequence families of combinatorial significance. Many of the number triangles we encounter can be related to simplicial objects such as the associahedron and the permutahedron. The linkages between these objects is facilitated by the use of the previously introduced $\mathcal{T}$ transform.

A curious class of Hankel determinants
We consider Hankel determinants of the sequence of Catalan numbers modulo 2 (interpreted as integers 0 and 1) and more generally Hankel determinants where the sum over all permutations reduces to a single signed permutation.
