We construct feedback functions of Nonlinear Feedback Shift Registers from those of Linear Feedback Shift Registers using the cross-join pairs method and the Zech logarithms in finite fields. We present a hypothetical algorithm to generate all de Bruijn sequences of a given order.
Gale-Robinson quivers: from representations to combinatorial formulas
We investigate a family of representations of Gale-Robinson quivers that are geared towards providing concrete information about the corresponding cluster algebras. In this way, we provide a representation theoretic explanation for known combinatorial formulas for the Gale-Robinson sequence and also obtain similar formulas for several other cluster variables.
Triangular fractal approximating graphs and their covering paths and cycles
We observe two kinds of fractal approximating graphs, the background structures of the generalized Sierpinski Arrowhead Curve independently of the recursive curves. Both graphs related to the generalized Sierpinski Gasket and based on a checked triangular generator pattern. In the Overall Graph we connect the corners of the up facing neighbouring dark tiles. In the Inscribed Graph we connect their centroids. We describe their cardinalities in general case with recursive and explicit formulas, the numbers of their vertices and edges, their edge covering Hamiltonian-paths and -cycles, and their tiling-paths and -cycles which cover all of their dark tiles. Some of these formations are unambiguously transformable into each other and these bijective pairs keep their basic properties after the transformation. Some of their cardinalities form new integer sequences.
Quadratic Irrationals, Generating Functions, and Lévy Constants
We show that the generating function corresponding to the sequence of denominators of the best rational approximants of a quadratic irrational is a rational function with integer coefficients. Consequently we can compute the Lévy constant of any quadratic irrational explicitly in terms of a finite number of its convergents.

Let $G$ be a finite abelian group, and $r$ be a multiple of its exponent. The generalized Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant $s_r(G)$ is the smallest integer $s$ such that every sequence of length $s$ over $G$ has a zero-sum subsequence of length $r$. We show that $s_{2m}(\mathbb{Z}_2^d) \leq C_m 2^{d/m} + O(1)$ when $d\rightarrow\infty$, and $s_{2m}(\mathbb{Z}_2^d) \geq 2^{d/m} + 2m-1$ when $d=km$. We use results on $s_r(G)$ to prove new bounds for the codegree Turán density of complete $r$-graphs.
The generalized Sierpiński Arrowhead Curve
We define special Hamiltonian-paths and special permutations of the up-facing dark tiles on a checked triangular grid related to the generalized Sierpiński Gasket. Our definitions and observations make possible the generalization of the Sierpiński Arrowhead Curve for all orders. We produce these symmetric recursive curves in many ways by two kinds of asymmetric paths which are in a bijective relation and unambiguously transformable into each other in any order. These node-rewriting and edge-rewriting recursive curves keep their self-avoiding and simple properties after the transformation and their cardinality specifies a new integer sequence. We show a transformation table to change the curves into each other and we give another table to change them into Lindenmayer-system strings both by the absolute direction codes of their edges.

In [The Delta Conjecture, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., to appear] Haglund, Remmel, Wilson introduce a conjecture which gives a combinatorial prediction for the result of applying a certain operator to an elementary symmetric function. This operator, defined in terms of its action on the modified Macdonald basis, has played a role in work of Garsia and Haiman on diagonal harmonics, the Hilbert scheme, and Macdonald polynomials [A. M. Garsia and M. Haiman. A remarkable $q,t$-Catalan sequence and $q$-Lagrange inversion, J. Algebraic Combin. 5 (1996), 191--244], [M. Haiman, Vanishing theorems and character formulas for the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane, Invent. Math. 149 (2002), 371-407]. The Delta Conjecture involves two parameters $q,t$; in this article we give the first proof that the Delta Conjecture is true when $q=0$ or $t=0$.
A density version of Cobham's theorem

Cobham's theorem asserts that if a sequence is automatic with respect to two multiplicatively independent bases, then it is ultimately periodic. We prove a stronger density version of the result: if two sequences which are automatic with respect to two multiplicatively independent bases coincide on a set of density one, then they also coincide on a set of density one with a periodic sequence. We apply the result to a problem of Deshouillers and Ruzsa concerning the least nonzero digit of $n!$ in base $12$.
Repetition in Colored Sequences of Balls
In responding to a question on Math Stackexchange, the author formulated the problem of determining the number of strings of balls colored in most $n$ colors with a number $k$ of repeated colors. In this paper, we formulate the problem more formally, and solve several variations.
Hemisystems of the Hermitian Surface

We present a new method for the study of hemisystems of the Hermitian surface $\mathcal{U}_3$ of $PG(3,q^2)$. The basic idea is to represent generator-sets of $\mathcal{U}_3$ by means of a maximal curve naturally embedded in $\mathcal{U}_3$ so that a sufficient condition for the existence of hemisystems may follow from results about maximal curves and their automorphism groups. In this paper we obtain a hemisystem in $\ PG(3,p^2)$ for each $p$ prime of the form $p=1+16n^2$ with an integer $n$. Since the famous Landau's conjecture dating back to 1904 is still to be proved (or disproved), it is unknown whether there exists an infinite sequence of such primes. What is known so far is that just $18$ primes up to $51000$ with this property exist, namely $17,257,401,577, 1297,1601, 3137, 7057,13457,14401,15377,24337,25601,30977,$ $ 32401,33857,41617,50177.$ The scarcity of such primes seems to confirm that hemisystems of $\mathcal{U}_3$ are rare objects.
The Nonassociativity of the Double Minus Operation
The sequence A000975 in OEIS can be defined by $A_1=1$, $A_{n+1}=2A_n$ if $n$ is odd, and $A_{n+1}=2A_n+1$ if $n$ is even. This sequence satisfies other recurrence relations, admits some closed formulas, and is known to enumerate several interesting families of objects. We provide a new interpretation of this sequence using a binary operation defined by $a\ominus b := -a -b$. We show that the number of distinct results obtained by inserting parentheses in the expression $x_0\ominus x_1\ominus \cdots\ominus x_n$ equals $A_n$, by investigating the leaf depth in binary trees. Our result can be viewed as a quantitative measurement for the nonassociativity of the binary operation $\ominus$.
Stieltjes moment sequences of polynomials
A sequence $(a_n)_{n \geq 0}$ is Stieltjes moment sequence if it has the form $a_n = \int_0^\infty x^n dμ(x)$ for $μ$ is a nonnegative measure on $[0,\infty)$. It is known that $(a_n)_{n \geq 0}$ is a Stieltjes moment sequence if and only if the matrix $H =[a_{i+j}]_{i,j \geq 0}$ is totally positive, i.e., all its minors are nonnegative. We define a sequence of polynomials in $x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n$ $(a_n(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n))_{n \geq 0}$ to be a Stieltjes moment sequence of polynomials if the matrix $H =[a_{i+j} (x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n)]_{i,j \geq 0}$ is $(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n)$-totally positive, i.e., all its minors are polynomials in $x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n$ with nonnegative coefficients. The main goal of this paper is to produce a large class of Stieltjes moment sequences of polynomials by finding multivariable analogues of Catalan-like numbers as defined by Aigner.

Using a result of Takata, we prove a formula for the colored Jones polynomial of the double twist knots $K_{(-m,-p)}$ and $K_{(-m,p)}$ where $m$ and $p$ are positive integers. In the $(-m,-p)$ case, this leads to new families of $q$-hypergeometric series generalizing the Kontsevich-Zagier series. Comparing with the cyclotomic expansion of the colored Jones polynomials of $K_{(m,p)}$ gives a generalization of a duality at roots of unity between the Kontsevich-Zagier function and the generating function for strongly unimodal sequences.
Constructing Directed Cayley Graphs of Small Diameter: A Potent Solovay-Kitaev Procedure

Let $Γ$ be a group and $(Γ_n)_{n=1} ^{\infty}$ be a descending sequence of finite-index normal subgroups. We establish explicit upper bounds on the diameters of the directed Cayley graphs of the $Γ/Γ_n$ , under some natural hypotheses on the behaviour of power and commutator words in $Γ$. The bounds we obtain do not depend on a choice of generating set. Moreover under reasonable conditions our method provides a fast algorithm for constructing directed Cayley graphs of diameter satisfying our bounds. The proof is closely analogous to the the Solovay-Kitaev procedure, which only uses commutator words, but also only constructs small-diameter undirected Cayley graphs. As an application we give directed diameter bounds on finite quotients of two very different groups: $SL_2 (\mathbb{F}_q [[t]])$ (for $q$ even) and a group of automorphisms of the ternary rooted tree introduced by Fabrykowski and Gupta.
Wilf-collapse in permutation classes having two basis elements of size three
We consider permutation classes having two basis elements of size three and one further basis element. We completely classify the possible enumeration sequences of such classes and demonstrate that there are far fewer of them than might be expected in principle.
Recurrence sequences connected with the $m$--ary partition function and their divisibility properties
In this paper we introduce a class of sequences connected with the $m$--ary partition function and investigate their congruence properties. In particular, we get facts about the sequences of $m$--ary partitions $(b_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ and $m$--ary partitions with no gaps $(c_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$. We prove, for example, that for any natural number $2<h\leq m+1$ in both sequences $(b_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ and $(c_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ any residue class modulo $h$ appears infinitely many times.
Moreover, we give new proofs of characterisations modulo $m$ in terms of base--$m$ representation of $n$ for sequences $(b_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ and $(c_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$. We also present a general method of finding such characterisations modulo any power of $m$. Using our approach we get description of $(b_{m}(n)\mod{μ_{2}})_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$, where $μ_{2}=m^{2}$ if $m$ is odd and $μ_{2}=m^{2}/2$ if $m$ is even.
On Mixing Behavior of a Family of Random Walks Determined by a Linear Recurrence

We study random walks on the integers mod $G_n$ that are determined by an integer sequence $\{ G_n \}_{n \geq 1}$ generated by a linear recurrence relation. Fourier analysis provides explicit formulas to compute the eigenvalues of the transition matrices and we use this to bound the mixing time of the random walks.

We characterize sequences of positive integers $(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n)$ for which the $2\times2$ matrix $\left( \begin{array}{cc} a_n&-1 1&0 \end{array} \right) \left( \begin{array}{cc} a_{n-1}&-1 1&0 \end{array} \right) \cdots \left( \begin{array}{cc} a_1&-1 1&0 \end{array} \right) $ is either the identity matrix $\mathrm Id$, its negative $-\mathrm Id$, or square root of $-\mathrm Id$. This extends a theorem of Conway and Coxeter that classifies such solutions subject to a total positivity restriction.
Optimal Graphs for Independence and $k$-Independence Polynomials

The independence polynomial $I(G,x)$ of a finite graph $G$ is the generating function for the sequence of the number of independent sets of each cardinality. We investigate whether, given a fixed number of vertices and edges, there exists optimally-least (optimally-greatest) graphs, that are least (respectively, greatest) for all non-negative $x$. Moreover, we broaden our scope to $k$-independence polynomials, which are generating functions for the $k$-clique-free subsets of vertices. For $k \geq 3$, the results can be quite different from the $k = 2$ (i.e. independence) case.
Combinatorial Miller-Hagberg Algorithm for Randomization of Dense Networks

We propose a slightly revised Miller-Hagberg (MH) algorithm that efficiently generates a random network from a given expected degree sequence. The revision was to replace the approximated edge probability between a pair of nodes with a combinatorically calculated edge probability that better captures the likelihood of edge presence especially where edges are dense. The computational complexity of this combinatorial MH algorithm is still in the same order as the original one. We evaluated the proposed algorithm through several numerical experiments. The results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm was particularly good at accurately representing high-degree nodes in dense, heterogeneous networks. This algorithm may be a useful alternative of other more established network randomization methods, given that the data are increasingly becoming larger and denser in today's network science research.
