A Graphical Approach to Finding the Frobenius Number, Genus and Hilbert Series of a Numerical Semigroup
This paper proposes a new, visual method to study numerical semigroups and the Frobenius problem. The method is based on building a so-called reduction graph, whose nodes usually correspond to monogenic semigroups, and whose edges can have multiple inputs and outputs. If such a construction is possible, then determining whether the studied semigroup is symmetric, or finding explicit forms of its Apéry set and Hilbert series, is reduced to straightforward computations assisted by a MAPLE program we made available on arXiv. This approach applies to many of the cases considered in literature, including semigroups generated by arithmetic and geometric sequences, compound sequences, progressions of the form $a^n, a^n + a, \ldots, a^n + a^{n-1}$, triangular and tetrahedral numbers, certain Fibonacci triplets, etc. After explaining the general approach in more detail, the paper studies the types of edges that can be used as building blocks of a reduction graph, as well as a series of operations that serve to modify or combine valid reduction graphs. In the end of the paper, we use these techniques to solve the Frobenius problem for 7 new classes of numerical semigroups.
Sets of Stochastic Matrices with Converging Products: Bounds and Complexity
An SIA matrix is a stochastic matrix whose sequence of powers converges to a rank-one matrix. This convergence is desirable in various applications making use of stochastic matrices, such as consensus, distributed optimization and Markov chains. We study the shortest SIA products of sets of matrices. We observe that the shortest SIA product of a set of matrices is usually very short and we provide a first upper bound on the length of the shortest SIA product (if one exists) of any set of stochastic matrices. We also provide an algorithm that decides the existence of an SIA product. When particularized to automata, the problem becomes that of finding periodic synchronizing words, and we develop the consequences of our results in relation with the celebrated Cerny conjecture in automata theory. We also investigate links with the related notions of positive-column, Sarymsakov, and scrambling matrices.

Improved lower bound on generalized Erdos-Ginzburg-Ziv constants
If $G$ is a finite Abelian group, define $s_{k}(G)$ to be the minimal $m$ such that a sequence of $m$ elements in $G$ always contains a $k$-element subsequence which sums to zero. Recently Bitz et al. proved that if $n = exp(G)$, then $s_{2n}(C_{n}^{r}) > \frac{n}{2}[\frac{5}{4}-O(n^{-\frac{3}{2}})]^{r}$ and $s_{k n}(C_{n}^{r}) > \frac{k n}{4} [1+\frac{1}{e k}-O(\frac{1}{n})]^{r}$ for $k > 2$. In this note, we sharpen their general bound by showing that $s_{k n}(C_{n}^{r}) > \frac{k n}{4} [1+\frac{(k-1)^{(k-1)}}{k^k}-O(\frac{1}{n})]^{r}$ for $k > 2$.

Experimental analysis of lattice walks
Feller's book An Introduction to Probability Theory and Its Application discusses statistics corresponding to sequences of coin tosses, with a dollar being won or lost depending on the outcome of each toss. This is equivalent to analyzing walks in the plane with each step being one unit up or right. In his paper "Fully AUTOMATED computerized redux of Feller's (v.1) Ch. III (and much more!)" (http://sites.math.rutgers.edu/~zeilberg/mamarim/mamarimhtml/feller.html) and the accompanying Maple package, Zeilberger computes the "grand generating function," which, in a single blow, captures information about all of the walk statistics discussed by Feller. In this paper, we continue to investigate walks using computer methods. However, we shall introduce an approach different from that of Zeilberger, who used computer algebra to exactly compute the weight enumerator over all walks--an infinite sum expressed as an algebraic function. Our procedures input a numeric value of $n$ and use dynamic programming methods to find the weight enumerator over all walks of length $n$--a finite polynomial. Then, by generating these polynomials for many values of $n$, we are able to conjecture behavior of the moments of certain statistics as the walk length tends to $\infty$. The advantage of this method is that it is easily applied to more general problems not amenable to an analytic approach. For example, we use it to analyze walks in three dimensions and walks where more general steps (e.g., diagonal steps) are allowed.
Leaf realization problem, caterpillar graphs and prefix normal words
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a simple graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and a natural number $i \leq n$, let $L_G(i)$ be the maximum number of leaves that can be realized by an induced subtree $T$ of $G$ with $i$ vertices. We introduce a problem that we call the \emph{leaf realization problem}, which consists in deciding whether, for a given sequence of $n+1$ natural numbers $(\ell_0, \ell_1, \ldots, \ell_n)$, there exists a simple graph $G$ with $n$ vertices such that $\ell_i = L_G(i)$ for $i = 0, 1, \ldots, n$. We present basic observations on the structure of these sequences for general graphs and trees. In the particular case where $G$ is a caterpillar graph, we exhibit a bijection between the set of the discrete derivatives of the form $(ΔL_G(i))_{1 \leq i \leq n - 3}$ and the set of prefix normal words.

Exponential Lower Bounds on the Generalized Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Constant
Published in Discrete Mathematics Vol. 343, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
For a finite abelian group $G$, the generalized Erdős--Ginzburg--Ziv constant $\mathsf s_{k}(G)$ is the smallest $m$ such that a sequence of $m$ elements in $G$ always contains a $k$-element subsequence which sums to zero. If $n = \exp(G)$ is the exponent of $G$, the previously best known bounds for $\mathsf s_{kn}(C_n^r)$ were linear in $n$ and $r$ when $k\ge 2$. Via a probabilistic argument, we produce the exponential lower bound \[ \mathsf s_{2n}(C_n^r) > \frac{n}{2}[1.25 - O(n^{-3/2})]^r \] for $n > 0$. For the general case, we show \[ \mathsf s_{kn}(C_n^r) > \frac{kn}{4}\Big(1+\frac{1}{ek} + O\Big(\frac{1}{n}\Big)\Big)^r. \]
Efficiently sampling the realizations of irregular, but linearly bounded bipartite and directed degree sequences
Published in PLOS ONE, 2018, 13(8): e0201995 • View PublicationBIB
Since 1997 a considerable effort has been spent on the study of the swap (switch) Markov chains on graphic degree sequences. Several results were proved on rapidly mixing Markov chains on regular simple, on regular directed, on half-regular directed and on half-regular bipartite degree sequences. In this paper, the main result is the following: Let $U$ and $V$ be disjoint finite sets, and let $0 < c_1 \le c_2 < |U|$ and $0 < d_1 \le d_2 < |V|$ be integers. Furthermore, assume that the bipartite degree sequence on $U \cup V$ satisfies $c_1 \le d(v) \le c_2\ : \ \forall v\in V$ and $d_1 \le d(u) \le d_2 \ : \ \forall u\in U$. Finally assume that $(c_2-c_1 -1)(d_2 -d_1 -1) < 1 + \max \{c_1(|V| -d_2), d_1(|V|- c_2) \}$. Then the swap Markov chain on this bipartite degree sequence is rapidly mixing. The technique applies on directed degree sequences as well, with very similar parameter values. These results are germane to the recent results of Greenhill and Sfragara about fast mixing MCMC processes on simple and directed degree sequences, where the maximum degrees are $O(\sqrt{\# \mbox{ of edges}})$. The results are somewhat comparable on directed degree sequences: while the GS results are better applicable for degree sequences developed under some scale-free random process, our new results are better fitted to degree sequences developed under the Erdős -- Rényi model. For example our results cover all regular degree sequences, the GS model is not applicable when the average degree is $ > n/16.$
Graph Homomorphism Reconfiguration and Frozen $H$-Colourings
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a fixed graph $H$, the reconfiguration problem for $H$-colourings (i.e. homomorphisms to $H$) asks: given a graph $G$ and two $H$-colourings $\varphi$ and $ψ$ of $G$, does there exist a sequence $f_0,\dots,f_m$ of $H$-colourings such that $f_0=\varphi$, $f_m=ψ$ and $f_i(u)f_{i+1}(v)\in E(H)$ for every $0\leq i<m$ and $uv\in E(G)$? If the graph $G$ is loop-free, then this is the equivalent to asking whether it possible to transform $\varphi$ into $ψ$ by changing the colour of one vertex at a time such that all intermediate mappings are $H$-colourings. In the affirmative, we say that $\varphi$ reconfigures to $ψ$. Currently, the complexity of deciding whether an $H$-colouring $\varphi$ reconfigures to an $H$-colouring $ψ$ is only known when $H$ is a clique, a circular clique, a $C_4$-free graph, or in a few other cases which are easily derived from these. We show that this problem is PSPACE-complete when $H$ is an odd wheel. An important notion in the study of reconfiguration problems for $H$-colourings is that of a frozen $H$-colouring; i.e. an $H$-colouring $\varphi$ such that $\varphi$ does not reconfigure to any $H$-colouring $ψ$ such that $ψ\neq \varphi$. We obtain an explicit dichotomy theorem for the problem of deciding whether a given graph $G$ admits a frozen $H$-colouring. The hardness proof involves a reduction from a CSP problem which is shown to be NP-complete by establishing the non-existence of a certain type of polymorphism.

On S-packing edge-colorings of cubic graphs
Given a non-decreasing sequence S = (s 1,s 2,. .. ,s k) of positive integers, an S-packing edge-coloring of a graph G is a partition of the edge set of G into k subsets {X 1 ,X 2,. .. ,X k } such that for each 1 $\le$ i $\le$ k, the distance between two distinct edges e, e ' $\in$ X i is at least s i + 1. This paper studies S-packing edge-colorings of cubic graphs. Among other results, we prove that cubic graphs having a 2-factor are (1,1,1,3,3)-packing edge-colorable, (1,1,1,4,4,4,4,4)-packing edge-colorable and (1,1,2,2,2,2,2)-packing edge-colorable. We determine sharper results for cubic graphs of bounded oddness and 3-edge-colorable cubic graphs and we propose many open problems.

Compounding Doubly Affine Matrices
Weighted sums of left and right hand Kronecker products of Integer Sequence Doubly Affine (ISDA) as well as Generalized Arithmetic Progression Doubly Affine (GAPDA) arrays are used to generate larger ISDA arrays of multiplicative order (compound squares) from pairs of smaller ones. In two dimensions we find general expressions for the eigenvalues (EVs) and singular values (SVs) of the larger arrays in terms of the EVs and SVs of their constituent matrices, leading to a simple result for the rank of these highly singular compound matrices. Since the critical property of the smaller constituent matrices involves only identical row and column sums (often called semi-magic), the eigenvalue and singular value results can be applied to both magic squares and Latin squares. Additionally, the compounding process works in arbitrary dimensions due to the generality of the Kronecker product, providing a simple method to generate large order ISDA cubes and hypercubes. The first examples of compound magic squares are found in manuscripts that date back to the 10th century CE, and other representative applications are outlined through judicious examples.

The local limit of the uniform spanning tree on dense graphs
Published in Journal of Statistical Physics 173 (2018), no. 3-4, 502-545 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph in which almost all vertices have linear degrees and let $T$ be a uniform spanning tree of $G$. For any fixed rooted tree $F$ of height $r$ we compute the asymptotic density of vertices $v$ for which the $r$-ball around $v$ in $T$ is isomorphic to $F$. We deduce from this that if $\{G_n\}$ is a sequence of such graphs converging to a graphon $W$, then the uniform spanning tree of $G_n$ locally converges to a multi-type branching process defined in terms of $W$. As an application, we prove that in a graph with linear minimum degree, with high probability, the density of leaves in a uniform spanning tree is at least $1/e-o(1)$, the density of vertices of degree $2$ is at most $1/e+o(1)$ and the density of vertices of degree $k\geq 3$ is at most ${(k-2)^{k-2} \over (k-1)! e^{k-2}} + o(1)$. These bounds are sharp.

Quiver mutations and Boolean reflection monoids
Published in Journal of Algebra, Volume 544, 15 February 2020, Pages 417-453 • View PublicationBIB
In 2010, Everitt and Fountain introduced the concept of reflection monoids. The Boolean reflection monoids form a family of reflection monoids (symmetric inverse semigroups are Boolean reflection monoids of type $A$). In this paper, we give a family of presentations of Boolean reflection monoids and show how these presentations are compatible with quiver mutations of orientations of Dynkin diagrams with frozen vertices. Our results recover the presentations of Boolean reflection monoids given by Everitt and Fountain and the presentations of symmetric inverse semigroups given by Popova respectively. Surprisingly, inner by diagram automorphisms of irreducible Weyl groups and Boolean reflection monoids can be constructed by sequences of mutations preserving the same underlying diagrams. Besides, we show that semigroup algebras of Boolean reflection monoids are cellular algebras.

Representation stability on the cohomology of complements of subspace arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study representation stability in the sense of Church and Farb of sequences of cohomology groups of complements of arrangements of linear subspaces in real and complex space as $S_n$-modules. We consider arrangement of linear subspaces defined by sets of diagonal equalities $x_i = x_j$ and invariant under the action of $S_n$ permuting the coordinates. We provide bounds on the point when stabilization occurs and an alternative proof for the fact that stabilization happens. The latter is a special case of a very general stabilization result of Gadish and for the pure braid space the result is part of the work of Church and Farb. For this space better stabilization bounds were obtained by Hersh and Reiner.

Scaling limits of Cayley graphs with polynomially growing balls
Benjamini, Finucane and the first author have shown that if (G_n,S_n) is a sequence of Cayley graphs such that |S_n^n|=O(n^D|S_n|), then the sequence (G_n,d_{S_n}/n) is relatively compact for the Gromov-Hausdorff topology and every cluster point is a connected nilpotent Lie group equipped with a left-invariant sub-Finsler metric. In this paper we show that the dimension of such a cluster point is bounded by D, and that, under the stronger bound |S_n^n|=O(n^D), the homogeneous dimension of a cluster point is bounded by D. Our approach is roughly to use a well-known structure theorem for approximate groups due to Breuillard, Green and Tao to replace S_n^n with a coset nilprogression of bounded rank, and then to use results about nilprogressions from a previous paper of ours to study the ultralimits of such coset nilprogressions. As an application we bound the dimension of the scaling limit of a sequence of vertex-transitive graphs of large diameter. We also recover and effectivise parts of an argument of Tao concerning the further growth of single set S satisfying the bound |S^n| < Mn^D|S|.

We obtain special cases of these sequences. Furthermore, we give recurrence relations, vectors, the silver ratio and Binet's formula for the above-investigated sequences.
On the probability of nonexistence in binomial subsets

Given a hypergraph $Γ=(Ω,\mathcal{X})$ and a sequence $\mathbf{p} = (p_ω)_{ω\in Ω}$ of values in $(0,1)$, let $Ω_{\mathbf{p}}$ be the random subset of $Ω$ obtained by keeping every vertex $ω$ independently with probability $p_ω$. We investigate the general question of deriving fine (asymptotic) estimates for the probability that $Ω_{\mathbf{p}}$ is an independent set in $Γ$, which is an omnipresent problem in probabilistic combinatorics. Our main result provides a sequence of upper and lower bounds on this probability, each of which can be evaluated explicitly in terms of the joint cumulants of small sets of edge indicator random variables. Under certain natural conditions, these upper and lower bounds coincide asymptotically, thus giving the precise asymptotics of the probability in question. We demonstrate the applicability of our results with two concrete examples: subgraph containment in random (hyper)graphs and arithmetic progressions in random subsets of the integers.
Chromatic Number and Dichromatic Polynomial of Digraphs
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$. It is well-known that $α(G)\geq \sum_{i=1}^n \frac{1}{1+d_i}$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$ and $d_1,\ldots,d_n$ is the degree sequence of $G$. We extend this result to digraphs by showing that if $D$ is a digraph with $n$ vertices, then $ α(D)\geq \sum_{i=1}^n \left( \frac{1}{1+d_i^+} + \frac{1}{1+d_i^-} - \frac{1}{1+d_i}\right)$, where $α(D)$ is the maximum size of an acyclic vertex set of $D$. Golowich proved that for any digraph $D$, $χ(D)\leq \lceil \frac{4k}{5} \rceil+2$, where $k=max(Δ^+(D),Δ^-(D))$. We give a short and simple proof for this result. Next, we investigate the chromatic number of tournaments and determine the unique tournament such that for every integer $k>1$, the number of proper $k$-colorings of that tournament is maximum among all strongly connected tournaments with the same number of vertices. Also, we find the chromatic polynomial of the strongly connected tournament with the minimum number of cycles.
Sequences of radius $k$ for complete bipartite graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 225, pp. 51--63. 2017 • View PublicationBIB
A \emph{$k$-radius sequence} for a graph $G$ is a sequence of vertices of $G$ (typically with repetitions) such that for every edge $uv$ of $G$ vertices $u$ and $v$ appear at least once within distance $k$ in the sequence. The length of a shortest $k$-radius sequence for $G$ is denoted by $f_k(G)$. We give an asymptotically tight estimation on $f_k(G)$ for complete bipartite graphs {which matches a lower bound, valid for all bipartite graphs}. We also show that determining $f_k(G)$ for an arbitrary graph $G$ is NP-hard for every constant $k>1$.

On k-Total Dominating Graphs
For a graph G, the k-total dominating graph D_{k}^{t}(G) is the graph whose vertices correspond to the total dominating sets of G that have cardinality at most k; two vertices of D_{k}^{t}(G) are adjacent if and only if the corresponding total dominating sets of G differ by either adding or deleting a single vertex. The graph D_{k}^{t}(G) is used to study the reconfiguration problem for total dominating sets: a total dominating set can be reconfigured to another by a sequence of single vertex additions and deletions, such that the intermediate sets of vertices at each step are total dominating sets, if and only if they are in the same component of D_{k}^{t}(G). Let d_{0}(G) be the smallest integer r such that D_{k}^{t}(G) is connected for all k greater than or equal to r. We investigate the realizability of graphs as total dominating graphs. For k the upper total domination number Γ_{t}(G), we show that any graph without isolated vertices is an induced subgraph of a graph G such that D_{k}^{t}(G) is connected. We show that d_{0}(G) lies between Γ_{t}(G) and n (inclusive) for any connected graph G of order n at least 3, characterize the graphs for which either bound is realized, and determine d_{0}(C_{n}) and d_{0}(P_{n}).
