The binomial interpolated transform of a sequence is a generalization of the well-known binomial transform. We examine a Pascal-like triangle, on which a binomial interpolated transform works between the left and right diagonals, focusing on binary recurrences. We give the sums of the elements in rows and in rising diagonals, further we define two special classes of these arithmetical triangles.

Let a word be a sequence of $n$ i.i.d. integer random variables. The perimeter $P$ of the word is the number of edges of the word, seen as a polyomino. In this paper, we present a probabilistic approach to the computation of the moments of $P$. This is applied to uniform and geometric random variables. We also show that, asymptotically, the distribution of $P$ is Gaussian and, seen as a stochastic process, the perimeter converges in distribution to a Brownian motion
Escaping from a quadrant of the $6\times 6$ grid by edge disjoint paths
Let $G$ be the Cartesian product of two finite paths, called a grid, and let $T$ be the set of eight distinct vertices of $G$, called terminals. Assume that $T$ is partitioned into four terminal pairs $\{s_i,t_i\}$, $1\leq i\leq 4$, to be linked in $G$ by using edge disjoint paths. To prove that such a linkage always exists we need a sequence of technical lemmas making possible for some terminals to `escape' from a $3\times 3$ corner of $Q\subset G$, called a `quadrant'. Here we state those lemmas, and give a proof for the cases when $Q$ contains at most $4$ terminals.

A zigzag in a map (a $2$-cell embedding of a connected graph in a connected closed $2$-dimensional surface) is a cyclic sequence of edges satisfying the following conditions: 1) any two consecutive edges lie on the same face and have a common vertex, 2) for any three consecutive edges the first and the third edges are disjoint and the face containing the first and the second edges is distinct from the face which contains the second and the third. A map is $z$-knotted if it contains a single zigzag. Such maps are closely connected to Gauss code problem and have nice homological properties. We show that every triangulation of a connected closed $2$-dimensional surface admits a $z$-knotted shredding.
Tensor Models, Kronecker coefficients and Permutation Centralizer Algebras

We show that the counting of observables and correlators for a 3-index tensor model are organized by the structure of a family of permutation centralizer algebras. These algebras are shown to be semi-simple and their Wedderburn-Artin decompositions into matrix blocks are given in terms of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of symmetric groups. The matrix basis for the algebras also gives an orthogonal basis for the tensor observables which diagonalizes the Gaussian two-point functions. The centres of the algebras are associated with correlators which are expressible in terms of Kronecker coefficients (Clebsch-Gordan multiplicities of symmetric groups). The color-exchange symmetry present in the Gaussian model, as well as a large class of interacting models, is used to refine the description of the permutation centralizer algebras. This discussion is extended to a general number of colors $d$: it is used to prove the integrality of an infinite family of number sequences related to color-symmetrizations of colored graphs, and expressible in terms of symmetric group representation theory data. Generalizing a connection between matrix models and Belyi maps, correlators in Gaussian tensor models are interpreted in terms of covers of singular 2-complexes. There is an intriguing difference, between matrix and higher rank tensor models, in the computational complexity of superficially comparable correlators of observables parametrized by Young diagrams.
Multi de Bruijn Sequences

We generalize the notion of a de Bruijn sequence to a "multi de Bruijn sequence": a cyclic or linear sequence that contains every k-mer over an alphabet of size q exactly m times. For example, over the binary alphabet {0,1}, the cyclic sequence (00010111) and the linear sequence 000101110 each contain two instances of each 2-mer 00,01,10,11. We derive formulas for the number of such sequences. The formulas and derivation generalize classical de Bruijn sequences (the case m=1). We also determine the number of multisets of aperiodic cyclic sequences containing every k-mer exactly m times; for example, the pair of cyclic sequences (00011)(011) contains two instances of each 2-mer listed above. This uses an extension of the Burrows-Wheeler Transform due to Mantaci et al, and generalizes a result by Higgins for the case m=1.
Area difference bounds for dissections of a square into an odd number of triangles

Monsky's theorem from 1970 states that a square cannot be dissected into an odd number of triangles of the same area, but it does not give a lower bound for the area differences that must occur.
We extend Monsky's theorem to "constrained framed maps"; based on this we can apply a gap theorem from semi-algebraic geometry to a polynomial area difference measure and thus get a lower bound for the area differences that decreases doubly-exponentially with the number of triangles. On the other hand, we obtain the first superpolynomial upper bounds for this problem, derived from an explicit construction that uses the Thue-Morse sequence.
The bidirectional ballot polytope
A bidirectional ballot sequence (BBS) is a finite binary sequence with the property that every prefix and suffix contains strictly more ones than zeros. BBS's were introduced by Zhao, and independently by Bosquet-M{é}lou and Ponty as $(1,1)$-culminating paths. Both sets of authors noted the difficulty in counting these objects, and to date research on bidirectional ballot sequences has been concerned with asymptotics. We introduce a continuous analogue of bidirectional ballot sequences which we call bidirectional gerrymanders, and show that the set of bidirectional gerrymanders form a convex polytope sitting inside the unit cube, which we refer to as the bidirectional ballot polytope. We prove that every $(2n-1)$-dimensional unit cube can be partitioned into $2n-1$ isometric copies of the $(2n-1)$-dimensional bidirectional ballot polytope. Furthermore, we show that the vertices of this polytope are all also vertices of the cube, and that the vertices are in bijection with BBS's. An immediate corollary is a geometric explanation of the result of Zhao and of Bosquet-M{é}lou and Ponty that the number of BBS's of length $n$ is $Θ(2^n/n)$.

We show that if $D$ is a tournament of arbitrary size then $D$ has finite strong components after reversing a locally finite sequence of cycles. In turn, we prove that any tournament can be covered by two acyclic sets after reversing a locally finite sequence of cycles. This provides a partial solution to a conjecture of S. Thomassé.
Characters of Independent Stanley Sequences

Odlyzko and Stanley introduced a greedy algorithm for constructing infinite sequences with no 3-term arithmetic progressions when beginning with a finite set with no 3-term arithmetic progressions. The sequences constructed from this procedure are known as Stanley sequences and appear to have two distinct growth rates which dictate whether the sequences are structured or chaotic. A large subclass of sequences of the former type is independent sequences, which have a self-similar structure. An attribute of interest for independent sequences is the character. In this paper, building on recent progress, we prove that every nonnegative integer $λ\not\in\{1,3,5,9,11,15\}$ is attainable as the character of an independent Stanley sequence, thus resolving a conjecture of Rolnick.
Polynomial tuning of multiparametric combinatorial samplers

Boltzmann samplers and the recursive method are prominent algorithmic frameworks for the approximate-size and exact-size random generation of large combinatorial structures, such as maps, tilings, RNA sequences or various tree-like structures. In their multiparametric variants, these samplers allow to control the profile of expected values corresponding to multiple combinatorial parameters. One can control, for instance, the number of leaves, profile of node degrees in trees or the number of certain subpatterns in strings. However, such a flexible control requires an additional non-trivial tuning procedure. In this paper, we propose an efficient polynomial-time, with respect to the number of tuned parameters, tuning algorithm based on convex optimisation techniques. Finally, we illustrate the efficiency of our approach using several applications of rational, algebraic and Pólya structures including polyomino tilings with prescribed tile frequencies, planar trees with a given specific node degree distribution, and weighted partitions.

We consider a model for complex networks that was recently proposed as a model for complex networks by Krioukov et al. In this model, nodes are chosen randomly inside a disk in the hyperbolic plane and two nodes are connected if they are at most a certain hyperbolic distance from each other. It has been previously shown that this model has various properties associated with complex networks, including a power-law degree distribution and a strictly positive clustering coefficient. The model is specified using three parameters : the number of nodes $N$, which we think of as going to infinity, and $α, ν> 0$ which we think of as constant. Roughly speaking $α$ controls the power law exponent of the degree sequence and $ν$ the average degree.
Earlier work of Kiwi and Mitsche has shown that when $α< 1$ (which corresponds to the exponent of the power law degree sequence being $< 3$) then the diameter of the largest component is a.a.s.~polylogarithmic in $N$. Friedrich and Krohmer have shown it is a.a.s.~$Ω(\log N)$ and they improved the exponent of the polynomial in $\log N$ in the upper bound. Here we show the maximum diameter over all components is a.a.s.~$O(\log N)$ thus giving a bound that is tight up to a multiplicative constant.

For the random interval partition of $[0,1]$ generated by the uniform stick-breaking scheme known as GEM$(1)$, let $u_k$ be the probability that the first $k$ intervals created by the stick-breaking scheme are also the first $k$ intervals to be discovered in a process of uniform random sampling of points from $[0,1]$. Then $u_k$ is a renewal sequence. We prove that $u_k$ is a rational linear combination of the real numbers $1, ζ(2), \ldots, ζ(k)$ where $ζ$ is the Riemann zeta function, and show that $u_k$ has limit $1/3$ as $k \to \infty$. Related results provide probabilistic interpretations of some multiple zeta values in terms of a Markov chain derived from the interval partition. This Markov chain has the structure of a weak record chain. Similar results are given for the GEM$(θ)$ model, with beta$(1,θ)$ instead of uniform stick-breaking factors, and for another more algebraic derivation of renewal sequences from the Riemann zeta function.

Set partitions and permutations with restrictions on the size of the blocks and cycles are important combinatorial sequences. Counting these objects lead to the sequences generalizing the classical Stirling and Bell numbers. The main focus of the present article is the analysis of combinatorial and arithmetical properties of them. The results include several combinatorial identities and recurrences as well as some properties of their $p$-adic valuations.

We construct a new bijection between the set of $n\times k$ $0$-$1$ matrices with no three $1$'s forming a $Γ$ configuration and the set of $(n,k)$-Callan sequences, a simple structure counted by poly-Bernoulli numbers. We give two applications of this result: We derive the generating function of $Γ$-free matrices, and we give a new bijective proof for an elegant result of Aval et al. that states that the number of complete non-ambiguous forests with $n$ leaves is equal to the number of pairs of permutations of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ with no common rise.

As an inverse relation, involution with an invariant sequence plays a key role in combinatorics and features prominently in some of Shapiro's open questions [L.W. Shapiro, Some open questions about random walks, involutions, limiting distributions and generating functions, Adv. Appl. Math. 27 (2001) 585-596]. In this paper, invariant sequences are used to provide answers to some of these questions about the Fibonacci matrix and Riordan involutions.

This paper initiates the study of shortening universal cycles (u-cycles) and universal words (u-words) for permutations either by using incomparable elements, or by using non-deterministic symbols. The latter approach is similar in nature to the recent relevant studies for the de Bruijn sequences. A particular result we obtain in this paper is that u-words for $n$-permutations exist of lengths $n!+(1-k)(n-1)$ for $k=0,1,\ldots,(n-2)!$.
Small and Large Weights in Steinhaus Triangles
Let $\{0=w_0<w_1<w_2<\ldots<w_m\}$ be the set of weights of binary Steinhaus triangles of size $n$, and let $W_i$ be the set of sequences in $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ that generate triangles of weight $w_i$. We obtain the values of $w_i$ and the corresponding sets $W_i$ for $i\in\{1,2,3,m\}$, and partial results about $w_{m-1}$ and $W_{m-1}$.

Let $T(H, G_n)$ be the number of monochromatic copies of a fixed connected graph $H$ in a uniformly random coloring of the vertices of the graph $G_n$. In this paper we give a complete characterization of the limiting distribution of $T(H, G_n)$, when $\{G_n\}_{n \geq 1}$ is a converging sequence of dense graphs. When the number of colors grows to infinity, depending on whether the expected value remains bounded, $T(H, G_n)$ either converges to a finite linear combination of independent Poisson variables or a normal distribution. On the other hand, when the number of colors is fixed, $T(H, G_n)$ converges to a (possibly infinite) linear combination of independent centered chi-squared random variables. This generalizes the classical birthday problem, which involves understanding the asymptotics of $T(K_s, K_n)$, the number of monochromatic $s$-cliques in a complete graph $K_n$ ($s$-matching birthdays among a group of $n$ friends), to general monochromatic subgraphs in a network.
