The scaling window for a random graph with a given degree sequence

We consider a random graph on a given degree sequence ${\cal D}$, satisfying certain conditions. We focus on two parameters $Q=Q({\cal D}), R=R({\cal D})$. Molloy and Reed proved that Q=0 is the threshold for the random graph to have a giant component. We prove that if $|Q|=O(n^{-1/3} R^{2/3})$ then, with high probability, the size of the largest component of the random graph will be of order $Θ(n^{2/3}R^{-1/3})$. If $|Q|$ is asymptotically larger than $n^{-1/3}R^{2/3}$ then the size of the largest component is asymptotically smaller or larger than $n^{2/3}R^{-1/3}$. Thus, we establish that the scaling window is $|Q|=O(n^{-1/3} R^{2/3})$.
The Maximum Wiener Index of Trees with Given Degree Sequences
The Wiener index of a connected graph is the sum of topological distances between all pairs of vertices. Since Wang gave a mistake result on the maximum Wiener index for given tree degree sequence, in this paper, we investigate the maximum Wiener index of trees with given degree sequences and extremal trees which attain the maximum value.
A Fibonacci sequence for linear structures with two types of components
We investigate binary voting systems with two types of voters and a hierarchy among the members in each type, so that members in one class have more influence or importance than members in the other class. The purpose of this paper is to count, up to isomorphism, the number of these voting systems for an arbitrary number of voters. We obtain a closed formula for the number of these systems, this formula follows a Fibonacci sequence with a smooth polynomial variation on the number of voters.
A Gray path on binary partitions
A binary partition of a positive integer $n$ is a partition of $n$ in which each part has size a power of two. In this note we first construct a Gray sequence on the set of binary partitions of $n$. This is an ordering of the set of binary partitions of each $n$ (or of all $n$) such that adjacent partitions differ by one of a small set of elementary transformations; here the allowed transformatios are replacing $2^k+2^k$ by $2^{k+1}$ or vice versa (or addition of a new +1). Next we give a purely local condition for finding the successor of any partition in this sequence; the rule is so simple that successive transitions can be performed in constant time. Finally we show how to compute directly the bijection between $k$ and the $k$th term in the sequence.

$q$-exchangeability via quasi-invariance

For positive $q\neq1$, the $q$-exchangeability of an infinite random word is introduced as quasi-invariance under permutations of letters, with a special cocycle which accounts for inversions in the word. This framework allows us to extend the $q$-analog of de Finetti's theorem for binary sequences---see Gnedin and Olshanski [Electron. J. Combin. 16 (2009) R78]---to general real-valued sequences. In contrast to the classical case of exchangeability ($q=1$), the order on $\mathbb{R}$ plays a significant role for the $q$-analogs. An explicit construction of ergodic $q$-exchangeable measures involves random shuffling of $\mathbb{N}=\{1,2,...\}$ by iteration of the geometric choice. Connections are established with transient Markov chains on $q$-Pascal pyramids and invariant random flags over the Galois fields.
An addition theorem and maximal zero-sum free sets in Z/pZ
Using the polynomial method in additive number theory, this article establishes a new addition theorem for the set of subsums of a set satisfying $A\cap(-A)=\emptyset$ in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$: \[|Σ(A)|\geqslant\min{p,1+\frac{|A|(|A|+1)}{2}}.\]
The proof is similar in nature to Alon, Nathanson and Ruzsa's proof of the Erdös-Heilbronn conjecture (proved initially by Dias da Silva and Hamidoune \cite{DH}). A key point in the proof of this theorem is the evaluation of some binomial determinants that have been studied in the work of Gessel and Viennot. A generalization to the set of subsums of a sequence is derived, leading to a structural result on zero-sum free sequences. As another application, it is established that for any prime number $p$, a maximal zero-sum free set in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ has cardinality the greatest integer $k$ such that \[\frac{k(k+1)}{2}<p,\] proving a conjecture of Selfridge from 1976.
Some Nice Sums are Almost as Nice if you turn them Upside Down
We represent the sums $\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}{n \choose k}^{-2}$, $\sum_{k=0}^m{m\choose k}^{-1}{a\choose n-k}^{-1}$, $\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{q^{-k(k-1)}}{{\genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{n}{k}}_q}$, and the sum of the reciprocals of the summands in Dixon's identity, each as a product of an {\it indefinite hypergeometric sum} times a (closed form) {\it hypergeometric sequence}

The normal sequences NS(n) and near-normal sequences NN(n) play an important role in the construction of orthogonal designs and Hadamard matrices. They can be identified with certain base sequences (A;B;C;D), where A and B have length n+1 and C and D length n. C.H. Yang conjectured that near-normal sequences exist for all even n. While this has been confirmed for n not exceeding 30, so far nothing else was known for larger n. We show that NN(32) consists of 8 equivalence classes and we exhibit their representatives. We also construct representatives for two equivalence classes of NN(34). On the other hand our exhaustive computer searches show that NS(31) and NS(33) are void.
Self-inverse Sheffer sequences and Riordan involutions
In this short note we focus on self-inverse Sheffer sequences and involutions in the Riordan group. We translate the results of Brown and Kuczma on self-inverse sequences of Sheffer polynomials to describe all involutions in the Riordan group.

Starting from a study of Y. Bugeaud and A. Dubickas (2005) on a question in distribution of real numbers modulo 1 via combinatorics on words, we survey some combinatorial properties of (epi)Sturmian sequences and distribution modulo 1 in connection to their work. In particular we focus on extremal properties of (epi)Sturmian sequences, some of which have been rediscovered several times.
Chromatic number and complete graph substructures for degree sequences
Given a graphic degree sequence $D$, let $χ(D)$ (respectively $ω(D)$, $h(D)$, and $H(D)$) denote the maximum value of the chromatic number (respectively, the size of the largest clique, largest clique subdivision, and largest clique minor) taken over all simple graphs whose degree sequence is $D$. It is proved that $χ(D)\le h(D)$. Moreover, it is shown that a subdivision of a clique of order $χ(D)$ exists where each edge is subdivided at most once and the set of all subdivided edges forms a collection of disjoint stars. This bound is an analogue of the Hajos Conjecture for degree sequences and, in particular, settles a conjecture of Neil Robertson that degree sequences satisfy the bound $χ(D)\le H(D)$ (which is related to the Hadwiger Conjecture). It is also proved that $χ(D)\le {6/5}ω(D)+{3/5}$ and that $χ(D) \le {4/5}ω(D) + {1/5}Δ(D) + 1$, where $Δ(D)$ denotes the maximum degree in $D$. The latter inequality is a strengthened version of a conjecture of Bruce Reed. All derived inequalities are best possible.

We introduce the antipodal pairs property for probability measures on finite Boolean algebras and prove that conditional versions imply strong forms of log-concavity. We give several applications of this fact, including improvements of some results of Wagner; a new proof of a theorem of Liggett stating that ultra-log-concavity of sequences is preserved by convolutions; and some progress on a well-known log-concavity conjecture of J. Mason.

In this paper we derive polynomial time algorithms that generate random $k$-noncrossing matchings and $k$-noncrossing RNA structures with uniform probability. Our approach employs the bijection between $k$-noncrossing matchings and oscillating tableaux and the $P$-recursiveness of the cardinalities of $k$-noncrossing matchings. The main idea is to consider the tableaux sequences as paths of stochastic processes over shapes and to derive their transition probabilities.

Eliahou \cite{2} and Kryuchkov \cite{9} conjectured a proposition that Gravier and Payan \cite{4} proved to be equivalent to the Four Color Theorem. It states that any triangulation of a polygon can be transformed into another triangulation of the same polygon by a sequence of signed diagonal flips. It is well known that any pair of polygonal triangulations are connected by a sequence of (non-signed) diagonal flips. In this paper we give a sufficient and necessary condition for a diagonal flip sequence to be a signed diagonal flip sequence.

Let Δbe a finite sequence of n vectors from a vector space over any field. We consider the subspace of \operatorname{Sym}(V) spanned by \prod_{v \in S} v, where S is a subsequence of Δ. A result of Orlik and Terao provides a doubly indexed direct sum of this space. The main theorem is that the resulting Hilbert series is the Tutte polynomial evaluation T(Δ;1+x,y). Results of Ardila and Postnikov, Orlik and Terao, Terao, and Wagner are obtained as corollaries.
Moving faces to other places: Facet derangements

Derangements are a popular topic in combinatorics classes. We study a generalization to face derangements of the n-dimensional hypercube. These derangements can be classified as odd or even, depending on whether the underlying isometry is direct or indirect, providing a link to abstract algebra. We emphasize the interplay between the geometry, algebra and combinatorics of these sequences, with lots of pretty pictures.
Asymptotics of partial sums of central binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers
We prove exact asymptotic expansions for the partial sums of the sequences of central binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers, $\sum_{k=0}^n \binom{2k}{k}$ and $\sum_{k=0}^n C_n$. We also obtain closed forms for the polynomials $\sum_{k=0}^{q-1}\binom{2k}{k}x^k$ and $\sum_{k=0}^{q-1}C_kx^k$ over the field of $p$ elements, where $q$ is a power of the prime $p$.
Grid classes and partial well order

We prove necessary and sufficient conditions on a family of (generalised) gridding matrices to determine when the corresponding permutation classes are partially well-ordered. One direction requires an application of Higman's Theorem and relies on there being only finitely many simple permutations in the only non-monotone cell of each component of the matrix. The other direction is proved by a more general result that allows the construction of infinite antichains in any grid class of a matrix whose graph has a component containing two or more non-monotone-griddable cells. The construction uses a generalisation of pin sequences to grid classes, together with a number of symmetry operations on the rows and columns of a gridding.

In this paper the Erdos-Rado theorem is generalized to the class of well founded trees. We define an equivalence relation on the class rs(infty)^{< aleph_0} (finite sequences of decreasing sequences of ordinals) with aleph_0 equivalence classes, and for n< omega a notion of n-end-uniformity for a colouring of rs(infty)^{< aleph_0} with mu colours. We then show that for every ordinal alpha, n< omega and cardinal mu there is an ordinal lambda so that for any colouring c of T=rs(lambda)^{< aleph_0} with mu colours, T contains S isomorphic to rs(alpha) so that c rest S^{< aleph_0} is n-end uniform. For c with domain T^n this is equivalent to finding S subseteq T isomorphic to rs(alpha) so that c upharpoonright S^{n} depends only on the equivalence class of the defined relation, so in particular T-> (rs(alpha))^n_{mu, aleph_0} . We also draw a conclusion on colourings of n-tuples from a scattered linear order.

In 1991, David Gale and Raphael Robinson, building on explorations carried out by Michael Somos in the 1980s, introduced a three-parameter family of rational recurrence relations, each of which (with suitable initial conditions) appeared to give rise to a sequence of integers, even though a priori the recurrence might produce non-integral rational numbers. Throughout the '90s, proofs of integrality were known only for individual special cases. In the early '00s, Sergey Fomin and Andrei Zelevinsky proved Gale and Robinson's integrality conjecture. They actually proved much more, and in particular, that certain bivariate rational functions that generalize Gale-Robinson numbers are actually polynomials with integer coefficients. However, their proof did not offer any enumerative interpretation of the Gale-Robinson numbers/polynomials. Here we provide such an interpretation in the setting of perfect matchings of graphs, which makes integrality/polynomiality obvious. Moreover, this interpretation implies that the coefficients of the Gale-Robinson polynomials are positive, as Fomin and Zelevinsky conjectured.
