Associahedra for finite type cluster algebras and minimal relations between $\mathbf{g}$-vectors
Published in Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. 127(3):513-588, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the mesh mutations are the minimal relations among the $\boldsymbol{g}$-vectors with respect to any initial seed in any finite type cluster algebra. We then use this algebraic result to derive geometric properties of the $\boldsymbol{g}$-vector fan: we show that the space of all its polytopal realizations is a simplicial cone, and we then observe that this property implies that all its realizations can be described as the intersection of a high dimensional positive orthant with well-chosen affine spaces. This sheds a new light on and extends earlier results of N. Arkani-Hamed, Y. Bai, S. He, and G. Yan in type $A$ and of V. Bazier-Matte, G. Douville, K. Mousavand, H. Thomas and E. Yildirim for acyclic initial seeds. Moreover, we use a similar approach to study the space of polytopal realizations of the $\boldsymbol{g}$-vector fans of another generalization of the associahedron: non-kissing complexes (a.k.a. support $τ$-tilting complexes) of gentle algebras. We show that the space of realizations of the non-kissing fan is simplicial when the gentle bound quiver is brick and $2$-acyclic, and we describe in this case its facet-defining inequalities in terms of mesh mutations. Along the way, we prove algebraic results on $2$-Calabi-Yau triangulated categories, and on extriangulated categories that are of independent interest. In particular, we prove, in those two setups, an analogue of a result of M. Auslander on minimal relations for Grothendieck groups of module categories.

A bound for crystallographic arrangements
A crystallographic arrangement is a set of linear hyperplanes satisfying a certain integrality property and decomposing the space into simplicial cones. Crystallographic arrangements were completely classified in a series of papers by Heckenberger and the author. However, this classification is based on two computer proofs checking millions of cases. In the present paper, we prove without using a computer that, up to equivalence, there are only finitely many irreducible crystallographic arrangements in each rank greater than two.

The Lecture Hall Cone as a toric deformation
The Lecture Hall cone is a simplicial cone whose lattice points naturally correspond to Lecture Hall partitions. The celebrated Lecture Hall Theorem of Bousquet-Mélou and Eriksson states that a particular specialization of its multivariate Ehrhart series factors in a very nice and unexpected way. Over the years, several proofs of this result have been found, but it is still not considered to be well-understood from a geometric perspective. In this note we propose two conjectures which aim at clarifying this result. Our main conjecture is that the Ehrhart ring of the Lecture Hall cone is actually an initial subalgebra $A_n$ of a certain subalgebra of a polynomial ring, which is itself isomorphic to a polynomial ring. As passing to initial subalgebras does not affect the Hilbert function, this explains the observed factorization. We give a recursive definition of certain Laurent polynomials, which generate the algebra $A_n$. Our second conjecture is that these Laurent polynomials are in fact polynomials. We computationally verified that both conjectures hold for Lecture Hall partitions of length at most 12.

Complete graphs: the space of simplicial cones, and their path tree representation
Let $G$ be a complete graph with $n+1$ vertices. In a recent paper of the authors, it is shown that the path trees of the graph play a special role in the structure of the truncated powers and partition functions that are associated with the graph. Motivated by the above, we take here a closer look at the geometry of the simplicial cones associated with the graph, and the role played by those simplicial cones that are generated by path trees. It is shown that the latter form a basis for the linear space spanned by the former, and that the representation of a general simplicial cone by path tree cones can be deduced by examining partial orders induced by rooted trees. While the problem itself is geometrical and its solution is combinatorial, the proofs rest with multivariate spline theory.
$h^\ast$-polynomials of zonotopes
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 371 (2019), 2021-2042 • View PublicationBIB
The Ehrhart polynomial of a lattice polytope $P$ encodes information about the number of integer lattice points in positive integral dilates of $P$. The $h^\ast$-polynomial of $P$ is the numerator polynomial of the generating function of its Ehrhart polynomial. A zonotope is any projection of a higher dimensional cube. We give a combinatorial description of the $h^\ast$-polynomial of a lattice zonotope in terms of refined descent statistics of permutations and prove that the $h^\ast$-polynomial of every lattice zonotope has only real roots and therefore unimodal coefficients. Furthermore, we present a closed formula for the $h^\ast$-polynomial of a zonotope in matroidal terms which is analogous to a result by Stanley (1991) on the Ehrhart polynomial. Our results hold not only for $h^\ast$-polynomials but carry over to general combinatorial positive valuations. Moreover, we give a complete description of the convex hull of all $h^\ast$-polynomials of zonotopes in a given dimension: it is a simplicial cone spanned by refined Eulerian polynomials.

The subdivision of large simplicial cones in Normaliz
Published • View PublicationBIB
Normaliz is an open-source software for the computation of lattice points in rational polyhedra, or, in a different language, the solutions of linear diophantine systems. The two main computational goals are (i) finding a system of generators of the set of lattice points and (ii) counting elements degree-wise in a generating function, the Hilbert Series. In the homogeneous case, in which the polyhedron is a cone, the set of generators is the Hilbert basis of the intersection of the cone and the lattice, an affine monoid. We will present some improvements to the Normaliz algorithm by subdividing simplicial cones with huge volumes. In the first approach the subdivision points are found by integer programming techniques. For this purpose we interface to the integer programming solver SCIP to our software. In the second approach we try to find good subdivision points in an approximating overcone that is faster to compute.

Unimodular triangulations of simplicial cones by short vectors
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish a bound for the length of vectors involved in a unimodular triangulation of simplicial cones. The bound is exponential in the square of the logarithm of the multiplicity, and improves previous bounds significantly. The proof is based on a successive reduction of the highest prime divisor of the multiplicity and uses the prime number theorem to control the length of the subdividing vectors.

A polyhedral model of partitions with bounded differences and a bijective proof of a theorem of Andrews, Beck, and Robbins
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main result of this paper is a bijective proof showing that the generating function for partitions with bounded differences between largest and smallest part is a rational function. This result is similar to the closely related case of partitions with fixed differences between largest and smallest parts which has recently been studied through analytic methods by Andrews, Beck, and Robbins. Our approach is geometric: We model partitions with bounded differences as lattice points in an infinite union of polyhedral cones. Surprisingly, this infinite union tiles a single simplicial cone. This construction then leads to a bijection that can be interpreted on a purely combinatorial level.

On decomposing Betti tables and $O$-sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Boij-Söderberg characterization decomposes a Betti table into a unique positive integral linear combination of pure diagrams. Given a module with a pure resolution, we describe explicit formulae for computing the decomposition of the Betti table of the module given the decomposition of the truncation of the Betti table, and vice versa. Nagel and Sturgeon described the decomposition of Betti tables of ideals with $d$-linear resolutions; indeed, the coefficients are precisely finite $O$-sequences. Using the extension formulae, we provide an explicit description of the coefficients of the decomposition of the Betti table of the quotient ring of such an ideal. Following from this, we describe the closed convex simplicial cone of $O$-sequences.

On the polyhedral cones of convex and concave vectors
Published • View PublicationBIB
Convex or concave sequences of $n$ positive terms, viewed as vectors in $n$-space, constitute convex cones with $2n-2$ and $n$ extreme rays, respectively. Explicit description is given of vectors spanning these extreme rays, as well as of non-singular linear transformations between the positive orthant and the simplicial cones formed by the positive concave vectors. The simplicial cones of monotone convex and concave vectors can be described similarly.

The power of pyramid decomposition in Normaliz

We describe the use of pyramid decomposition in Normaliz, a software tool for the computation of Hilbert bases and enumerative data of rational cones and affine monoids. Pyramid decomposition in connection with efficient parallelization and streamlined evaluation of simplicial cones has enabled Normaliz to process triangulations of size $\approx 5\cdot 10^{11}$ that arise in the computation of Hilbert series related to combinatorial voting theory.

Ehrhart f*-coefficients of polytopal complexes are non-negative integers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Ehrhart polynomial $L_P$ of an integral polytope $P$ counts the number of integer points in integral dilates of $P$. Ehrhart polynomials of polytopes are often described in terms of their Ehrhart $h^*$-vector (aka Ehrhart $δ$-vector), which is the vector of coefficients of $L_P$ with respect to a certain binomial basis and which coincides with the $h$-vector of a regular unimodular triangulation of $P$ (if one exists). One important result by Stanley about $h^*$-vectors of polytopes is that their entries are always non-negative. However, recent combinatorial applications of Ehrhart theory give rise to polytopal complexes with $h^*$-vectors that have negative entries. In this article we introduce the Ehrhart $f^*$-vector of polytopes or, more generally, of polytopal complexes $K$. These are again coefficient vectors of $L_K$ with respect to a certain binomial basis of the space of polynomials and they have the property that the $f^*$-vector of a unimodular simplicial complex coincides with its $f$-vector. The main result of this article is a counting interpretation for the $f^*$-coefficients which implies that $f^*$-coefficients of integral polytopal complexes are always non-negative integers. This holds even if the polytopal complex does not have a unimodular triangulation and if its $h^*$-vector does have negative entries. Our main technical tool is a new partition of the set of lattice points in a simplicial cone into discrete cones. Further results include a complete characterization of Ehrhart polynomials of integral partial polytopal complexes and a non-negativity theorem for the $f^*$-vectors of rational polytopal complexes.

Volumes and Tangent Cones of Matroid Polytopes
De Loera et al. 2009, showed that when the rank is fixed the Ehrhart polynomial of a matroid polytope can be computed in polynomial time when the number of elements varies. A key to proving this is the fact that the number of simplicial cones in any triangulation of a tangent cone is bounded polynomially in the number of elements when the rank is fixed. The authors speculated whether or not the Ehrhart polynomial could be computed in polynomial time in terms of the number of bases, where the number of elements and rank are allowed to vary. We show here that for the uniform matroid of rank $r$ on $n$ elements, the number of simplicial cones in any triangulation of a tangent cone is $n-2 \choose r-1$. Therefore, if the rank is allowed to vary, the number of simplicial cones grows exponentially in $n$. Thus, it is unlikely that a Brion-Lawrence type of approach, such as Barvinok's Algorithm, can compute the Ehrhart polynomial efficiently when the rank varies with the number of elements. To prove this result, we provide a triangulation in which the maximal simplicies are in bijection with the spanning thrackles of the complete bipartite graph $K_{r,n-r}$.

Enumeration of ${\rm AGL}(\frac m3, {\Bbb F}_{p^3})$-Invariant Extended Cyclic Codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $p$ be a prime and let $r, e, m$ be positive integers such that $r|e$ and $e|m$. The enumeration of linear codes of length $p^m$ over ${\Bbb F}_{p^r}$ which are invariant under the affine linear group ${\rm AGL}(\frac me, {\Bbb F}_{p^e})$ is equivalent to the enumeration of certain ideals in a partially ordered set $({\mathcal U}, \prec)$ where ${\mathcal U}=\{0,1,...,\frac me(p-1)\}^e$ and $\prec$ is defined by an $e$-dimensional simplicial cone. When $e=2$, the enumeration problem was solved in an earlier paper. In the present paper, we consider the cases $e=3$. We describe methods for enumerating all ${\rm AGL}(\frac m3, {\Bbb F}_{p^3})$-invariant linear codes of length $p^m$ over ${\Bbb F}_{p^r}$
