Symmetric nonnegative functions, the tropical Vandermonde cell and superdominance of power sums
We study nonnegative and sums of squares symmetric (and even symmetric) functions of fixed degree. We can think of these as limit cones of symmetric nonnegative polynomials and symmetric sums of squares of fixed degree as the number of variables goes to infinity. We compare these cones, including finding explicit examples of nonnegative polynomials which are not sums of squares for any sufficiently large number of variables, and compute the tropicalizations of their dual cones in the even symmetric case. We find that the tropicalization of the dual cones is naturally understood in terms of the overlooked superdominance order on partitions. The power sum symmetric functions obey this same partial order (analogously to how term-normalized power sums obey the dominance order).

Positive $e$-expansions of the chromatic symmetric functions of KPKPs, twinned lollipops, and kayak paddles
We find a positive $e_I$-expansion for the chromatic symmetric function of KPKP graphs, which are graphs obtained by connecting a vertex in a complete graph with a vertex in the maximal clique of a lollipop graph by a path. This generalizes the positive $e_I$-expansion for the chromatic symmetric function of lollipops obtained by Tom, for that of KPK graphs obtained by Wang and Zhou, and as well for those of KKP graphs and PKP graphs obtained by Qi, Tang and Wang. As an application, we confirm the $e$-positivity of twinned lollipops. We also discover the first positive $e_I$-expansion for the chromatic symmetric function of kayak paddle graphs which are formed by connecting a vertex on a cycle and a vertex on another cycle with a path. This refines the $e$-positivity of kayak paddle graphs which was obtained by Aliniaeifard, Wang, and van Willigenburg.

A power sum expansion for the Kromatic symmetric function
Published in Discrete Math Volume 349, Issue 5, May 2026, 114957 • View PublicationBIB
The chromatic symmetric $X_G$ function is a symmetric function generalization of the chromatic polynomial of a graph, introduced by Stanley (1995). Stanley gave an expansion formula for $X_G$ in terms of the power sum symmetric functions $p_λ$ using the principle of inclusion-exclusion, and in arXiv:1904.01262, Bernardi and Nadeau gave an alternate $p$-expansion for $X_G$ in terms of acyclic orientations. In arXiv:2301.02177, Crew, Pechenik, and Spirkl defined the Kromatic symmetric function $\overline{X}_G$ as a $K$-theoretic analogue of $X_G$, constructed in the same way except that each vertex is assigned a nonempty set of colors such that adjacent vertices have nonoverlapping color sets. They defined a $K$-analogue $\overline{p}_λ$ of the power sum basis and computed the first few coefficients of the $\overline{p}$-expansion of $\overline{X}_G$ for some small graphs $G$. They conjectured that the $\overline{p}$-expansion always has integer coefficients and asked whether there is an explicit formula for these coefficients. In this note, we give a formula for the $\overline{p}$-expansion of $\overline{X}_G$, show two ways to compute the coefficients recursively (along with examples), and prove that the coefficients are indeed always integers. In a more recent paper arXiv:2502.21285, we use our formula from this note to give a combinatorial description of the $\overline{p}$-coefficients $[\overline{p}_λ]\overline{X}_G$ and a simple characterization of their signs in the case of unweighted graphs.

On the chromatic symmetric homology for star graphs
The chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ is a power series that encodes the proper colorings of a graph $G$ by assigning a variable to each color and a monomial to each coloring such that the power of a variable in a monomial is the number of times the corresponding color is used in the corresponding coloring. The chromatic symmetric homology $H_*(G)$ is a doubly graded family of $\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_n]$-modules that was defined by Sazdanović and Yip (2018) as a categorification of $X_G$. Chandler, Sazdanović, Stella, and Yip (2023) proved that $H_*(G)$ is a strictly stronger graph invariant than $X_G$, and they also computed or conjectured formulas for it in a number of special cases. We prove and extend some of their conjectured formulas for the case of star graphs, where one central vertex is connected to all other vertices and no other pairs of vertices are connected.

Some properties of the Redei-Berge function and related combinatorial Hopf algebras
Stanley and Grinberg introduced the symmetric function associated to digraphs, called the Redei-Berge symmetric function. In [8] is shown that this symmetric function arises from a suitable structure of combinatorial Hopf algebra on digraphs. In this paper, we introduce two new combinatorial Hopf algebras of posets and permutations and define corresponding Redei-Berge functions for them. By using both theories, of symmetric functions and of combinatorial Hopf algebras, we prove many properties of the Redei-Berge function. These include some forms of deletion-contraction property, which make it similar to the chromatic symmetric function. We also find some invariants of digraphs that are detected by the Redei-Berge function.
Khovanov-Rozansky homology of Coxeter knots and Schröder polynomials for paths under any line
We introduce a family of generalized Schröder polynomials $S_τ(q,t,a)$, indexed by triangular partitions $τ$ and prove that $S_τ(q,t,a)$ agrees with the Poincaré series of the triply graded Khovanov-Rozansky homology of the Coxeter knot $K_τ$ associated to $τ$. For all integers $m,n,d\geq 1$ with $m,n$ relatively prime, the $(d,mnd+1)$-cable of the torus knot $T(m,n)$ appears as a special case. It is known that these knots are algebraic, and as a result we obtain a proof of the $q=1$ specialization of the Oblomkov-Rasmussen-Shende conjecture for these knots. Finally, we show that our Schröder polynomial computes the hook components in the Schur expansion of the symmetric function appearing in the shuffle theorem under any line, thus proving a triangular version of the $(q,t)$-Schröder theorem.

Two-row Delta Springer varieties
Published in Algebr. Comb. 8(4) (2025), 925-953 • View PublicationBIB
We study the geometry and topology of $Δ$-Springer varieties associated with two-row partitions. These varieties were introduced in recent work by Griffin-Levinson-Woo to give a geometric realization of a symmetric function appearing in the Delta conjecture by Haglund-Remmel-Wilson. We provide an explicit and combinatorial description of the irreducible components of the two-row $Δ$-Springer variety and compare it to the ordinary two-row Springer fiber as well as Kato's exotic Springer fiber corresponding to a one-row bipartition. In addition to that, we extend the action of the symmetric group on the homology of the two-row $Δ$-Springer variety to an action of a degenerate affine Hecke algebra and relate this action to a $\mathfrak{gl}_{2}$-tensor space.

$α$-chromatic symmetric functions
In this paper, we introduce the \emph{$α$-chromatic symmetric functions} $χ^{(α)}_π[X;q]$, extending Shareshian and Wachs' chromatic symmetric functions with an additional real parameter $α$. We present positive combinatorial formulas with explicit interpretations. Notably, we show an explicit monomial expansion in terms of the $α$-binomial basis and an expansion into certain chromatic symmetric functions in terms of the $α$-falling factorial basis. Among various connections with other subjects, we highlight a significant link to $q$-rook theory, including a new solution to the $q$-hit problem posed by Garsia and Remmel in their 1986 paper introducing $q$-rook polynomials.

Chromatic symmetric functions and change of basis
We prove necessary conditions for certain elementary symmetric functions, $e_λ$, to appear with nonzero coefficient in Stanley's chromatic symmetric function as well as in the generalization considered by Shareshian and Wachs. We do this by first considering the expansion in the monomial or Schur basis and then performing a basis change. Using the former, we make a connection with two fundamental graph theory invariants, the independence and clique numbers. This allows us to prove nonnegativity of three-column coefficients for all natural unit interval graphs. The Schur basis permits us to give a new interpretation of the coefficient of $e_n$ in terms of tableaux. We are also able to give an explicit formula for that coefficient.

A Proof of the Symmetric Theta Conjecture when q = 0
In 10.1093/imrn/rnac258, the authors conjecture a combinatorial formula for the expressions $Ξe_α\rvert_{t=1}$, known as Symmetric Theta Trees Conjecture, in terms of tiered trees with an inversion statistic. In 10.1017/fms.2024.14, the authors prove a combinatorial formula for the same symmetric function, in terms of doubly labelled Dyck paths with the area statistic. In this paper, we give an explicit bijection between the subsets of the two families of objects when the relevant statistic is equal to $0$, thus proving the Symmetric Theta Tree Conjecture when $q=0$.
Elliptic Deformation of the Gaiotto-Rapčák Corner VOA and the Associated Partially Symmetric Polynomials
We construct the elliptic Miura transformation and use it to obtain the expression of the currents of elliptic corner VOA. We subsequently prove a novel combinatorial formula that is essential for deriving the quadratic relations of the currents. In addition, we give a conjecture that relates the correlation function of the currents of elliptic corner VOA to a certain family of partially symmetric polynomials. The elliptic Macdonald polynomials, constructed recently by Awata-Kanno-Mironov-Morozov-Zenkevich, and Fukuda-Ohkubo-Shiraishi, can be obtained as a particular case of this family.

Multi-quasisymmetric functions with semigroup exponents, Hopf algebras and Rota-Baxter algebras
Many years ago, G.-C.~Rota discovered a close connection between symmetric functions and Rota-Baxter algebras, and proposed to study generalizations of symmetric functions in the framework of Rota-Baxter algebras. Guided by this proposal, quasisymmetric functions from weak composition (instead of just compositions) were obtained from free Rota-Baxter algebras on one generator. This paper aims to generalize this approach to free Rota-Baxter algebras on multiple generators in order to obtain further generalizations of quasisymmetric functions. For this purpose and also for its independent interest, the space $\mathrm{MQSym}$ of quasisymmetric functions on multiple sequences of variables is defined, generalizing quasisymmetric functions and diagonally quasisymmetric functions of Aval, Bergeron and Bergeron. Linear bases of such multi-quasisymmetric functions are given by monomial multi-quasisymmetric functions and fundamental multi-quasisymmetric functions, the latter recover the fundamental $G^m$-quasisymmetric functions of Aval and Chapoton. Next introduced is the even more general notion of multi-quasisymmetric functions $\mathrm{MQSym}^E$ with exponents in a semigroup $E$, which also generalizes the quasisymmetric functions with semigroup exponents in a recent work. Through this approach, a natural Hopf algebraic structure is obtained on $\mathrm{MQSym}^E$. Finally, in support of Rota's proposal, the free commutative unitary Rota-Baxter algebra on a finite set is shown to be isomorphic to a scalar extension of $\mathrm{MQSym}^E$, a fact which in turn equips the free Rota-Baxter algebra with a Hopf algebra structure.

A Combinatorial Perspective on the Noncommutative Symmetric Functions
The noncommutative symmetric functions $\textbf{NSym}$ were first defined abstractly by Gelfand et al. in 1995 as the free associative algebra generated by noncommuting indeterminants $\{\boldsymbol{e}_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ that were taken as a noncommutative analogue of the elementary symmetric functions. The resulting space was thus a variation on the traditional symmetric functions $Λ$. Giving noncommutative analogues of generating function relations for other bases of $Λ$ allowed Gelfand et al. to define additional bases of $\textbf{NSym}$ and then determine change-of-basis formulas using quasideterminants. In this paper, we aim for a self-contained exposition that expresses these bases concretely as functions in infinitely many noncommuting variables and avoids quasideterminants. Additionally, we look at the noncommutative analogues of two different interpretations of change-of-basis in $Λ$: both as a product of a minimal number of matrices, mimicking Macdonald's exposition of $Λ$ in Symmetric Functions and Hall Polynomials, and as statistics on brick tabloids, as in work by Eğecioğlu and Remmel, 1990.

Quasisymmetric expansion of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 91B (2024) (Proceedings of the 36th FPSAC) Article #86, 12 pp • Search Publication
In our previous works we introduced a $q$-deformation of the generating functions for enriched $P$-partitions. We call the evaluation of this generating functions on labelled chains, the $q$-fundamental quasisymmetric functions. These functions interpolate between Gessel's fundamental ($q=0$) and Stembridge's peak ($q=1$) functions, the natural quasisymmetric expansions of Schur and Schur's $Q$-symmetric functions. In this paper, we show that our $q$-fundamental functions provide a quasisymmetric expansion of Hall-Littlewood $S$-symmetric functions with parameter $t=-q$.

Chromatic symmetric functions of conjoined graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce path-conjoined graphs defined for two rooted graphs by joining their roots with a path, and investigate the chromatic symmetric functions of its two generalizations: spider-conjoined graphs and chain-conjoined graphs. By using the composition method developed by Zhou and the third author recently, we obtain neat positive $e_I$-expansions for the chromatic symmetric functions of clique-path-cycle graphs, path-clique-path graphs, and clique-clique-path graphs. We pose the $e$-positivity conjecture for hat-chains.

On a Pieri-like rule for the Petrie symmetric functions
A $k$-ribbon tiling is a decomposition of a connected skew diagram into disjoint ribbons of size $k$. In this paper, we establish a connection between a subset of $k$-ribbon tilings and Petrie symmetric functions, thus providing a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients in a Pieri-like rule for the Petrie symmetric functions due to Grinberg (Algebr. Comb. 5 (2022), no. 5, 947-1013). This also extends a result by Cheng, Chou and Eu et al. (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 151 (2023), no. 5, 1839-1854). As a bonus, our findings can be effectively utilized to derive certain specializations.
The $e$-positivity of the chromatic symmetric function for twinned paths and cycles
Published in Discrete Math. 348, No. 12, Article ID 114687, 27 p. (2025) • View PublicationBIB
The operation of twinning a graph at a vertex was introduced by Foley, Hoàng, and Merkel (2019), who conjectured that twinning preserves $e$-positivity of the chromatic symmetric function. A counterexample to this conjecture was given by Li, Li, Wang, and Yang (2021). In this paper, we prove that $e$-positivity is preserved by the twinning operation on cycles, by giving an $e$-positive generating function for the chromatic symmetric function, as well as an $e$-positive recurrence. We derive similar $e$-positive generating functions and recurrences for twins of paths. Our methods make use of the important triple deletion formulas of Orellana and Scott (2014), as well as new symmetric function identities.

Delta Operators on Almost Symmetric Functions
We construct $Δ$-operators $F[Δ]$ on the space of almost symmetric functions $\mathscr{P}_{as}^{+}$. These operators extend the usual $Δ$-operators on the space of symmetric functions $Λ\subset \mathscr{P}_{as}^{+}$ central to Macdonald theory. The $F[Δ]$ operators are constructed as certain limits of symmetric functions in the Cherednik operators $Y_i$ and act diagonally on the stable-limit non-symmetric Macdonald functions $\widetilde{E}_{(μ|λ)}(x_1,x_2,\ldots;q,t).$ Using properties of Ion-Wu limits, we are able to compute commutation relations for the $Δ$-operators $F[Δ]$ and many of the other operators on $\mathscr{P}_{as}^{+}$ introduced by Ion-Wu. Using these relations we show that there is an action of $\mathbb{B}_{q,t}^{\text{ext}}$ on almost symmetric functions which we show is isomorphic to the polynomial representation of $\mathbb{B}_{q,t}^{\text{ext}}$ constructed by González-Gorsky-Simental.

A Shifted Parking Function Symmetric Function
We define a "shifted analogue" $\mathrm{SH}_n$ of the parking function symmetric function $\mathrm{PF}_n$. The expansion of $\mathrm{SH}_n$ in terms of three bases for shifted symmetric functions is explicitly described. We don't know a shifted analogue for parking functions themselves, but some desirable properties of such an analogue are discussed.
