Cluster categories for completed infinity-gons I: Categorifying triangulations
Published in J. Lond. Math. Soc. 111 (2025), Paper No. e70092 • View PublicationBIB
Paquette and Yıldırım recently introduced triangulated categories of arcs in completed infinity-gons, which are discs with an infinite closed set of marked points on their boundary. These categories have many features in common with the cluster categories associated to discs with different sets of marked points. In particular, they have (weak) cluster-tilting subcategories, which Paquette and Yıldırım show are in bijection with very special triangulations of the disc. This is in contrast to Igusa and Todorov's earlier work in the uncompleted case, in which every triangulation corresponds to a weak cluster-tilting subcategory. In this paper, we replace the triangulated structure of Paquette and Yıldırım's category by an extriangulated substructure and prove that, with this structure, the weak cluster-tilting subcategories are once again in bijection with triangulations. We further show that functorial finiteness of a weak cluster-tilting subcategory is equivalent to a very mild condition on the triangulation, which also appears in Çanakçı and Felikson's study of infinite rank cluster algebras from Teichmüller theory. By comparison with the combinatorics of triangulations, we are also able to characterise when weak cluster-tilting subcategories can be mutated in this new extriangulated category.

A Framework for Symmetric Self-Intersecting Surfaces
3D printing of surfaces has become an established method for prototyping and visualisation. However, surfaces often contain certain degenerations, such as self-intersecting faces or non-manifold parts, which pose problems in obtaining a 3D printable file. Therefore, it is necessary to examine these degenerations beforehand. Surfaces in three-dimensional space can be represented as embedded simplicial complexes describing a triangulation of the surface. We use this combinatorial description, and the notion of embedded simplicial surfaces (which can be understood as well-behaved surfaces) to give a framework for obtaining 3D printable files. This provides a new perspective on self-intersecting triangulated surfaces in three-dimensional space. Our method first retriangulates a surface using a minimal number of triangles, then computes its outer hull, and finally treats non-manifold parts. To this end, we prove an initialisation criterion for the computation of the outer hull. We also show how symmetry properties can be used to simplify computations. Implementations of the proposed algorithms are given in the computer algebra system GAP4. To verify our methods, we use a dataset of self-intersecting symmetric icosahedra. Exploiting the symmetry of the underlying embedded complex leads to a notable speed-up and enhanced numerical robustness when computing a retriangulation, compared to methods that do not take advantage of symmetry.

Minimal triangulations of circle bundles
A triangulation of a circle bundle $ E \xrightarrow[\text{}]π B$ is a triangulation of the total space $E$ and the base $B$ such that the projection $π$ is a simplicial map. In the paper we address the following questions: Which circle bundles can be triangulated over a given triangulation of the base? What are the minimal triangulations of a bundle? A complete solution for semisimplicial triangulations was given by N. Mnëv. Our results deal with classical triangulations, that is, simplicial complexes. We give an exact answer for an infinite family of triangulated spheres (including the boundary of the $3$-simplex, the boundary of the octahedron, the suspension over an $n$-gon, the icosahedron). For the general case we present a sufficient criterion for existence of a triangulation. Some minimality results follow straightforwadly.

Snake Graphs and Caldero-Chapoton Functions from Triangulated Orbifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generalized cluster algebras from orbifolds were defined by Chekhov and Shapiro to give a combinatorial description of their Teichmüller spaces. One can also assign a gentle algebra to a triangulated orbifold, as in the work of Labardini-Fragoso and Mou. In this work, we show that the Caldero-Chapoton map and the snake graph expansion map agree for arcs in triangulated orbifolds and arc modules, and similarly for closed curves and certain band modules. As a consequence, we have a bijection between some indecomposable modules over a gentle algebra and cluster variables in a generalized cluster algebra where both algebras arise from the same triangulated orbifold.
Direct sum graph of the subspaces of a finite dimensional vector space over finite fields
In this paper, we introduce a new graph structure, called the $direct~ sum ~graph$ on a finite dimensional vector space. We investigate the connectivity, diameter and the completeness of $Γ_{U\oplus W}(\mathbb{V})$. Further, we find its domination number and independence number. We also determine the degree of each vertex in case the base field is finite and show that the graph $Γ_{U\oplus W}(\mathbb{V})$ is not Eulerian. We also show that under some mild conditions the graph $Γ_{U\oplus W}(\mathbb{V})$ is triangulated. We determine the clique number of $Γ_{U\oplus W}(\mathbb{V})$ for some particular cases. Finally, we find the size, girth, edge-connectivity and the chromatic number of $Γ_{U\oplus W}(\mathbb{V})$.
Reduction of Frobenius extriangulated categories
We describe a reduction technique for stably 2-Calabi--Yau Frobenius extriangulated categories $\mathcal{F}$ with respect to a functorially finite rigid subcategory $\mathcal{X}$. The reduction of such a category is another category $\mathcal{X}^{\perp_1}\subseteq\mathcal{F}$ of the same kind, whose cluster-tilting subcategories are those cluster-tilting subcategories $\mathcal{T}\subseteq\mathcal{F}$ such that $\mathcal{X}\subseteq\mathcal{T}$. This reduction operation generalises Iyama--Yoshino's reduction for 2-Calabi--Yau triangulated categories, which is recovered by passing to stable categories. Moreover, for a certain class of categories $\mathcal{F}$ and rigid objects $M$, we show that the relationship between $\mathcal{F}$ and $M^{\perp_1}$ may also be expressed in terms of internally Calabi--Yau algebras, in the sense of the third author. As an application, we give a conceptual proof of a result on frieze patterns originally obtained by the first author with Baur, Gratz, Serhiyenko, and Todorov.

Generalized Heawood Graphs and Triangulations of Tori
The Heawood graph is a remarkable graph that played a fundamental role in the development of the theory of graph colorings on surfaces in the 19th and 20th centuries. Based on permutahedral tilings, we introduce a generalization of the classical Heawood graph indexed by a sequence of positive integers. We show that the resulting generalized Heawood graphs are toroidal graphs, which are dual to higher dimensional triangulated tori. We also present explicit combinatorial formulas for their $f$-vectors and study their automorphism groups.

On the action of the Weyl group on canonical bases
We study representations of simply-laced Weyl groups which are equipped with canonical bases. Our main result is that for a large class of representations, the separable elements of the Weyl group $W$ act on these canonical bases by bijections up to lower-order terms. Examples of this phenomenon include the action of separable permutations on the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis of irreducible representations for the symmetric group, and the action of separable elements of $W$ on dual canonical bases of weight zero in tensor product representations of a Lie algebra. Our methods arise from categorical representation theory, and in particular the study of the perversity of Rickard complexes acting on triangulated categories.
Subchromatic numbers of powers of graphs with excluded minors
A $k$-subcolouring of a graph $G$ is a function $f:V(G) \to \{0,\ldots,k-1\}$ such that the set of vertices coloured $i$ induce a disjoint union of cliques. The subchromatic number, $χ_{\textrm{sub}}(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ admits a $k$-subcolouring. Nešetřil, Ossona de Mendez, Pilipczuk, and Zhu (2020), recently raised the problem of finding tight upper bounds for $χ_{\textrm{sub}}(G^2)$ when $G$ is planar. We show that $χ_{\textrm{sub}}(G^2)\le 43$ when $G$ is planar, improving their bound of 135. We give even better bounds when the planar graph $G$ has larger girth. Moreover, we show that $χ_{\textrm{sub}}(G^{3})\le 95$, improving the previous bound of 364. For these we adapt some recent techniques of Almulhim and Kierstead (2022), while also extending the decompositions of triangulated planar graphs of Van den Heuvel, Ossona de Mendez, Quiroz, Rabinovich and Siebertz (2017), to planar graphs of arbitrary girth. Note that these decompositions are the precursors of the graph product structure theorem of planar graphs. We give improved bounds for $χ_{\textrm{sub}}(G^p)$ for all $p$, whenever $G$ has bounded treewidth, bounded simple treewidth, bounded genus, or excludes a clique or biclique as a minor. For this we introduce a family of parameters which form a gradation between the strong and the weak colouring numbers. We give upper bounds for these parameters for graphs coming from such classes. Finally, we give a 2-approximation algorithm for the subchromatic number of graphs coming from any fixed class with bounded layered cliquewidth. In particular, this implies a 2-approximation algorithm for the subchromatic number of powers $G^p$ of graphs coming from any fixed class with bounded layered treewidth (such as the class of planar graphs). This algorithm works even if the power $p$ and the graph $G$ is unknown.
The Complexity of 2-Intersection Graphs of 3-Hypergraphs Recognition for Claw-free Graphs and triangulated Claw-free Graphs
Given a 3-uniform hypergraph H, its 2-intersection graph G has for vertex set the hyperedges of H and ee' is an edge of G whenever e and e' have exactly two common vertices in H. Di Marco et al. prove that deciding wether a graph G is the 2-intersection graph of a 3-uniform hypergraph is NP-complete. The main problems we study concern the class of claw-free graphs. We show that the recognition problem remains NP-complete when G is claw-free graphs but becomes polynomial if in addition G is triangulated.

Denominator vectors and dimension vectors from triangulated surfaces
Published in J. algebra, Vol. 641 (2024) 620--647 • View PublicationBIB
In a categorification of skew-symmetric cluster algebras, each cluster variable corresponds with an indecomposable module over the associated Jacobian algebra. Buan, Marsh and Reiten studied when the denominator vector of each cluster variable in an acyclic cluster algebra coincides with the dimension vector of the corresponding module. In this paper, we give analogues of their results for cluster algebras from triangulated surfaces by comparing two kinds of intersection numbers of tagged arcs.

Odd sun-free Triangulated Graphs are $S$-perfect
For a graph $G$ with the vertex set $V(G)$ and the edge set $E(G)$ and a star subgraph $S$ of $G$, let $α_S(G)$ be the maximum number of vertices in $G$ such that no two of them are in the same star subgraph $S$ and $θ_S(G)$ be the minimum number of star subgraph $S$ that cover the vertices of $G$. A graph $G$ is called $S$-perfect if for every induced subgraph $H$ of $G$, $α_S(H)=θ_S(H)$. Motivated by perfect graphs discovered by Berge, Ravindra introduced $S$-perfect graphs. In this paper we prove that a triangulated graph is $S$-perfect if and only if $G$ is odd sun-free. This result leads to a conjecture which if proved is a structural characterization of $S$-perfect graphs in terms of forbidden subgraphs.

Posets and Fractional Calabi-Yau Categories
This article deals with a relationship between derived categories of modules over some partially ordered sets and triangulated categories arising from quasi-homogeneous isolated singularities. It produces heuristics for the existence of derived equivalences between posets, using the geometric category as an auxiliary intermediate. The notion of Weight plays a central role as a simple footprint of the derived categories under consideration.

Hereditary extriangulated categories: Silting objects, mutation, negative extensions
In this article, we initiate the study of hereditary extriangulated categories. Many important categories arising in representation theory in connection with various theories of mutation are hereditary extriangulated. Special cases include homotopy categories of 2-term complexes with projective components, which are related to silting mutation, and cluster categories (with relevant relative extriangulated structures) where cluster tilting mutation take place. We prove that there is a theory of irreducible mutation for maximal rigid objects and subcategories in hereditary extriangulated categories of dominant dimension 1. Applied to the examples above, this recovers 2-term silting mutation in triangulated categories and cluster tilting mutation. By constructing suitable extriangulated categories, we also recover tau-tilting mutation for gentle algebras and flips for their non-kissing facets. Combined with results by Adachi-Tsukamoto and Pauksztello-Zvonareva, our mutation also provides mutation for intermediate co-t-structures. In spirit of our earlier work, we study negative extensions in hereditary extriangulated categories. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of universal balanced negative extensions. We explicitly compute certain, a priori non-universal, versions of negative extensions in hereditary categories constructed from triangulated categories with rigid subcategories. We discuss examples where these two constructions give the same delta-functors and where they disagree.

Multiple 3-Coloring, an Approach to 4-Coloring of Planar Graphs
A planar graph can be embedded in a piecewise linear manifold, and the lattice on each linear piece can be colored with 3-coloring. If a planar graph can be colored with multiple 3-coloring, i.e. coloring the graph in pieces with different 3-color subsets of 4 colors, then the graph is 4-colorable. In this paper, multiple 3-coloring was introduced, and then the combination and partition of planar graphs for multiple 3-coloring was studied. The study reveals that planar graphs can generally be decomposed into independent subgraphs, and each subgraph can be triangulated into a symmetric structure for multiple 3-coloring.

A structure theorem for homology 4-manifolds with $g_2\leq 5$
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 157 (2024), Paper No. 102705, 26 pp • View PublicationBIB
Numerous structural findings of homology manifolds have been derived in various ways in relation to $g_2$-values. The homology $4$-manifolds with $g_2\leq 5$ are characterized combinatorially in this article. It is well-known that all homology $4$-manifolds for $g_2\leq 2$ are polytopal spheres. We demonstrate that homology $4$-manifolds with $g_2\leq 5$ are triangulated spheres and are derived from triangulated 4-spheres with $g_2\leq 2$ by a series of connected sum, bistellar 1- and 2-moves, edge contraction, edge expansion, and edge flipping operations. We establish that the above inequality is optimally attainable, i.e., it cannot be extended to $g_2 = 6$.

A refined multiplication formula for cluster characters
We obtain a multiplication formula for cluster characters on (stably) 2-Calabi-Yau (Frobenius or) triangulated categories. This formula generalizes those known for arbitrary pairs of objects and for Auslander-Reiten triangles. As an application, we show that for cluster algebras of acyclic types, specialization of a cluster variable to 1 sends all cluster variables to elements of a cluster algebra of smaller rank. We also obtain application to the reduction of friezes of acyclic type.

Weak friezes and frieze pattern determinants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Frieze patterns have been introduced by Coxeter in the 1970's and have recently attracted renewed interest due to their close connection with Fomin-Zelevinsky's cluster algebras. Frieze patterns can be interpreted as assignments of values to the diagonals of a triangulated polygon satisfying certain conditions for crossing diagonals (Ptolemy relations). Weak friezes, as introduced by Canakci and Jorgensen, are generalizing this concept by allowing to glue dissected polygons so that the Ptolemy relations only have to be satisfied for crossings involving one of the gluing diagonals. To any frieze pattern one can associate a symmetric matrix using a triangular fundamental domain of the frieze pattern in the upper and lower half of the matrix and putting zeroes on the diagonal. Broline, Crowe and Isaacs have found a formula for the determinants of these matrices and their work has later been generalized in various directions by other authors. These frieze pattern determinants are the main focus of our paper. As our main result we show that this determinant behaves well with respect to gluing weak friezes: the determinant is the product of the determinants for the pieces glued, up to a scalar factor coming from the gluing diagonal. Then we give several applications of this result, showing that formulas from the literature, obtained by Broline-Crowe-Isaacs, Baur-Marsh, Bessenrodt-Holm-Jorgensen and Maldonado can all be obtained as consequences of our result.

Polarizations of Artin monomial ideals
We show that any polarization of an Artin monomial ideal defines a triangulated ball. This proves a conjecture of A.Almousa, H.Lohne and the first author. Geometrically, polarizations of ideals containing $(x_1^{a_1}, \ldots, x_n^{a_n})$ define full-dimensional triangulated balls on the sphere which is the join of boundaries of simplices of dimensions $a_1-1, \cdots, a_n-1$. Every full-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay sub-complex of this joined sphere is of this kind, and these balls are constructible. Such a triangulated ball has a dual cell complex which is a sub-complex of the product of simplices of dimensions $a_1-1, \cdots a_n-1$. The associated cellular complex of this gives the minimal free resolution of the Alexander dual ideal of the triangulated ball. When the product of simplices is a hypercube, in many examples these dual cell complexes enables a classification of the range of polarizations of the Artin monomial ideal. We also show that the squeezed balls of G.Kalai \cite{Ka} derive from polarizations of Artin monomial ideals.

Shellability is hard even for balls
The main goal of this paper is to show that shellability is NP-hard for triangulated d-balls (this also gives hardness for triangulated d-manifolds/d-pseudomanifolds with boundary) as soon as d is at least 3. This extends our earlier work with Goaoc, Patáková and Wagner on hardness of shellability of 2-complexes and answers some questions implicitly raised by Danaraj and Klee in 1978 and explicitly mentioned by Santamaría-Galvis and Woodroofe. Together with the main goal, we also prove that collapsibility is NP-hard for 3-complexes embeddable in the 3-space, extending an earlier work of the second author and answering an open question mentioned by Cohen, Fasy, Miller, Nayyeri, Peng and Walkington; and that shellability is NP-hard for 2-complexes embeddable in the 3-space, answering another question of Santamaría-Galvis and Woodroofe (in a slightly stronger form than what is given by the main result).
