Large expanders in high genus unicellular maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study large uniform random maps with one face whose genus grows linearly with the number of edges. They can be seen as a model of discrete hyperbolic geometry. In the past, several of these hyperbolic geometric features have been discovered, such as their local limit or their logarithmic diameter. In this work, we show that with high probability such a map contains a very large induced subgraph that is an expander.

LLT cumulants of unicellular Young diagrams, parking functions and Schur positivity
We give a combinatorial formula for LLT cumulants of unicellular unilevelled shapes in terms of parking functions and Cayley trees. Our formula implies previously conjectured Schur positivity.

Combinatorial proof for the rationality of the bivariate generating series of maps in positive genus
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we give the first combinatorial proof of a rationality scheme for the generating series of maps in positive genus enumerated by both vertices and faces, which was first obtained by Bender, Canfield and Richmond in 1993 by purely computational techniques. To do so, we rely on a bijection obtained by the second author in a previous work between those maps and a family of decorated unicellular maps. Our main contribution consists in a fine analysis of this family of maps. As a byproduct, we also obtain a new and simpler combinatorial proof of the rationality scheme for the generating series of maps enumerated by their number of edges, originally obtained computationally by Bender and Canfield in 1991 and combinatorially by the second author in 2019.

Unicellular maps and filtrations of the mapping class group
This article first answers to questions about connectedness of a new family of graphs on unicellular maps. Answering these questions goes through a description of the mapping class group as surgeries on unicellular maps. We also show how unicellular maps encode subgroups of the mapping group and provide filtrations of the mapping class group. These facts add a layer on the ubiquitous character of unicellular maps.

A symmetric function of increasing forests
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 9 (2021) e35 • View PublicationBIB
For an indifference graph $G$ we define a symmetric function of increasing spanning forests of $G$. We prove that this symmetric function satisfies certain linear relations, which are also satisfied by the chromatic quasisymmetric function and unicellular LLT polynomials. As a consequence we give a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the LLT polynomial in the elementary basis (up to a factor of a power of $(q-1)$), strengthening the description given by Alexandersson and Sulzgruber.

Chromatic symmetric functions from the modular law
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we show how to compute the chromatic quasisymmetric function of indifference graphs from the modular law introduced by Guay-Paquet. We provide an algorithm which works for any function that satisfies this law, such as unicellular LLT polynomials. When the indifference graph has bipartite complement it reduces to a planar network, in this case, we prove that the coefficients of the chromatic quasisymmetric function in the elementary basis are positive unimodal polynomials and characterize them as certain $q$-hit numbers (up to a factor). Finally, we discuss the logarithmic concavity of the coefficients of the chromatic quasisymmetric function.

Blossoming bijection for bipartite pointed maps and parametric rationality of general maps of any surface
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 141, 102408, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We construct an explicit bijection between bipartite pointed maps of an arbitrary surface $\mathbb{S}$, and specific unicellular blossoming maps of the same surface. Our bijection gives access to the degrees of all the faces, and distances from the pointed vertex in the initial map. The main construction generalizes recent work of the second author which covered the case of an orientable surface. Our bijection gives rise to a first combinatorial proof of a parametric rationality result concerning the bivariate generating series of maps of a given surface with respect to their numbers of faces and vertices. In particular, it provides a combinatorial explanation of the structural difference between the aforementioned bivariate parametric generating series in the case of orientable and non-orientable maps.

On breadth-first constructions of scaling limits of random graphs and random unicellular maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give alternate constructions of (i) the scaling limit of the uniform connected graphs with given fixed surplus, and (ii) the continuum random unicellular map (CRUM) of a given genus that start with a suitably tilted Brownian continuum random tree and make `horizontal' point identifications, at random heights, using the local time measures. Consequently, this can be seen as a continuum analogue of the breadth-first construction of a finite connected graph. In particular, this yields a breadth-first construction of the scaling limit of the critical Erdős-Rényi random graph which answers a question posed in [2]. As a consequence of this breadth-first construction we obtain descriptions of the radii, the distance profiles, and the two point functions of these spaces in terms of functionals of tilted Brownian excursions.

A bijection for essentially 3-connected toroidal maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a bijection for toroidal maps that are essentially $3$-connected ($3$-connected in the periodic planar representation). Our construction actually proceeds on certain closely related bipartite toroidal maps with all faces of degree $4$ except for a hexagonal root-face. We show that these maps are in bijection with certain well-characterized bipartite unicellular maps. Our bijection, closely related to the recent one by Bonichon and Lévêque for essentially 4-connected toroidal triangulations, can be seen as the toroidal counterpart of the one developed in the planar case by Fusy, Poulalhon and Schaeffer, and it extends the one recently proposed by Fusy and Lévêque for essentially simple toroidal triangulations. Moreover, we show that rooted essentially $3$-connected toroidal maps can be decomposed into two pieces, a toroidal part that is treated by our bijection, and a planar part that is treated by the above-mentioned planar case bijection. This yields a combinatorial derivation for the bivariate generating function of rooted essentially $3$-connected toroidal maps, counted by vertices and faces.

Noncommutative unicellular LLT polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known that unicellular LLT polynomials are related to the quasi-symmetric chromatic polynomials of certain graphs by the $(t-1)$-transform of symmetric functions. We investigate the extension of this transformation to various combinatorial Hopf algebras and prove a noncommutative version of this property.

LLT polynomials, elementary symmetric functions and melting lollipops
Published in J. Algebr. Comb (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We conjecture an explicit positive combinatorial formula for the expansion of unicellular LLT polynomials in the elementary symmetric basis. This is an analogue of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture and previously studied by Panova and the author in 2018. We show that the conjecture for unicellular LLT polynomials implies a similar formula for vertical-strip LLT polynomials. We prove positivity in the elementary basis in for the class of graphs called `melting lollipops' previously considered by Huh, Nam and Yoo. This is done by proving a curious relationship between a generalization of charge and orientations of unit-interval graphs. We also provide short bijective proofs of Lee's three-term recurrences for unicellular LLT polynomials and we show that these recurrences are enough to generate all unicellular LLT polynomials associated with abelian area sequences.

Unsensed enumeration of cubic unicellular maps on orientable and non-orientable surfaces
We enumerate cubic (3-regular) unicellular maps on closed surfaces up to all homeomorphisms. Using the orbifold approach, we reduce the unsensed enumeration to explicit counts of quotient maps and rooted cubic/precubic maps on simpler surfaces. For orientable hosts this yields a compact identity expressed through known sensed and rooted numbers; for non orientable hosts we obtain a fully explicit finite sum expression via precubic counts. Numerical tables are provided, together with a brief asymptotic discussion.

Melting lollipop chromatic quasisymmetric functions and Schur expansion of unicellular LLT polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this work, we generalize and utilize the linear relations of LLT polynomials introduced by Lee \cite{Lee}. By using the fact that the chromatic quasisymmetric functions and the unicellular LLT polynomials are related via plethystic substitution and thus they satisfy the same linear relations, we can apply the linear relations to both sets of functions. As a result, in the chromatic quasisymmetric function side, we find a class of $e$-positive graphs, called \emph{melting lollipop graphs}, and explicitly prove the $e$-unimodality. In the unicellular LLT side, we obtain Schur expansion formulas for LLT polynomials corresponding to certain set of graphs, namely, complete graphs, path graphs, lollipop graphs and melting lollipop graphs.

Combinatorial study of graphs arising from the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 86, May 2020, 103066 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the graphs involved in the theoretical physics model known as the colored Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We study in detail their combinatorial properties at any order in the so-called $1/N$ expansion, and we enumerate these graphs asymptotically. Because of the duality between colored graphs involving $q+1$ colors and colored triangulations in dimension $q$, our results apply to the asymptotic enumeration of spaces that generalize unicellular maps - in the sense that they are obtained from a single building block - for which a higher-dimensional generalization of the genus is kept fixed.

Linear relations on LLT polynomials and their k-Schur positivity for k=2
Published • View PublicationBIB
LLT polynomials are $q$-analogues of product of Schur functions that are known to be Schur-positive by Grojnowski and Haiman. However, there is no known combinatorial formula for the coefficients in the Schur expansion. Finding such a formula also provides Schur positivity of Macdonald polynomials. On the other hand, Haiman and Hugland conjectured that LLT polynomials for skew partitions lying on $k$ adjacent diagonals are $k$-Schur positive, which is much stronger than Schur positivity. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for $k=2$ by analyzing unicellular LLT polynomials. We first present a linearity theorem for unicellular LLT polynomials for $k=2$. By analyzing linear relations between LLT polynomials with known results on LLT polynomials for rectangles, we provide the $2$-Schur positivity of the unicellular LLT polynomials as well as LLT polynomials appearing in Haiman-Hugland conjecture for $k=2$.

$P$-partitions and $p$-positivity
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2021, Issue 14, July 2021, Pages 10848-10907 • View PublicationBIB
Using the combinatorics of $α$-unimodal sets, we establish two new results in the theory of quasisymmetric functions. First, we obtain the expansion of the fundamental basis into quasisymmetric power sums. Secondly, we prove that generating functions of reverse $P$-partitions expand positively into quasisymmetric power sums. Consequently any nonnegative linear combination of such functions is $p$-positive whenever it is symmetric. As an application we derive positivity results for chromatic quasisymmetric functions, unicellular and vertical strip LLT polynomials, multivariate Tutte polynomials and the more general $B$-polynomials, matroid quasisymmetric functions, and certain Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, thus reproving and improving on numerous results in the literature.

Orientations and bijections for toroidal maps with prescribed face-degrees and essential girth
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present unified bijections for maps on the torus with control on the face-degrees and essential girth (girth of the periodic planar representation). A first step is to show that for d>=3 every toroidal d-angulation of essential girth d can be endowed with a certain "canonical" orientation (formulated as a weight-assignment on the half-edges). Using an adaptation of a construction by Bernardi and Chapuy, we can then derive a bijection between face-rooted toroidal d-angulations of essential girth d (with the condition that, apart from the root-face contour, no other closed walk of length d encloses the root-face) and a family of decorated unicellular maps. The orientations and bijections can then be generalized, for any d>=1, to toroidal face-rooted maps of essential girth d with a root-face of degree d (and with the same root-face contour condition as for d-angulations), and they take a simpler form in the bipartite case, as a parity specialization. On the enumerative side we obtain explicit algebraic expressions for the generating functions of rooted essentially simple triangulations and bipartite quadrangulations on the torus. Our bijective constructions can be considered as toroidal counterparts of those obtained by Bernardi and the first author in the planar case, and they also build on ideas introduced by Despré, Gonçalves and the second author for essentially simple triangulations, of imposing a balancedness condition on the orientations in genus 1.

From unicellular fatgraphs to trees
In this paper we study the minimum number of reversals needed to transform a unicellular fatgraph into a tree. We consider reversals acting on boundary components, having the natural interpretation as gluing, slicing or half-flipping of vertices. Our main result is an expression for the minimum number of reversals needed to transform a unicellular fatgraph to a plane tree. The expression involves the Euler genus of the fatgraph and an additional parameter, which counts the number of certain orientable blocks in the decomposition of the fatgraph. In the process we derive a constructive proof of how to decompose non-orientable, irreducible, unicellular fatgraphs into smaller fatgraphs of the same type or trivial fatgraphs, consisting of a single ribbon. We furthermore provide a detailed analysis how reversals affect the component-structure of the underlying fatgraphs. Our results generalize the Hannenhalli-Pevzner formula for the reversal distance of signed permutations.

Blossoming bijection for higher-genus maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1997, Schaeffer described a bijection between Eulerian planar maps and some trees. In this work we generalize his work to a bijection between bicolorable maps on a surface of any fixed genus and some unicellular maps with the same genus. An important step of this construction is to exhibit a canonical orientation for maps, that allows to apply the same local opening algorithm as Schaeffer. As an important byproduct, we obtain the first bijective proof of a result of Bender and Canfield from 1991, when they proved that the generating series of maps in higher genus is a rational function of the generating series of planar maps.

Colored discrete spaces: higher dimensional combinatorial maps and quantum gravity
Published • View PublicationBIB
In any dimension $D$, the Euclidean Einstein-Hilbert action, which describes gravity in the absence of matter, can be discretized over random discrete spaces obtained by gluing families of polytopes together in all possible ways. In the physical limit of small Newton constant, only the spaces which maximize the mean curvature survive. In two dimensions, this results in a theory of random discrete spheres, which converge in the continuum limit towards the Brownian sphere, a random fractal space interpreted as a quantum random space-time. In this limit, the continuous Liouville theory of $D=2$ quantum gravity is recovered. Previous results in higher dimension regarded triangulations - gluings of tetrahedra or $D$-dimensional generalizations, leading to the continuum random tree, or gluings of simple colored building blocks of small sizes, for which multi-trace matrix model results are recovered. This work aims at providing combinatorial tools which would allow a systematic study of richer building blocks and of the spaces they generate in the continuum. We develop a bijection with stacked two-dimensional discrete surfaces, and detail how it can be used to classify discrete spaces according to their mean curvature and topology. A number of blocks are analyzed, including the new infinite family of bi-pyramids, as well as toroidal and $D$-dimensional generalizations. The relation to random tensor models is detailed. A central concern is the lowest bound on the number of ($D-2$)-cells for any given blocks, or equivalently the right scaling for the associated tensor model to have a well-behaved $1/N$ expansion. We also apply our bijection to the identification of the graphs contributing at any order to the $2n$-point functions of the colored SYK model, and to the enumeration of generalized unicellular maps - spaces obtained from a single building block - according to their mean curvature.
