A Variant of Harborth Constant
Let $G$ be a finite additive abelian group. For given $k$ a positive integer, the $k$-Harborth constant $g^k(G)$ is defined to be the smallest positive integer $t$ such that given a set $S$ of elements of $G$ with size $t$ there exists a zero-sum subset of size $k$. We find either the exact value of $g^k(G)$, or lower and upper bounds for this constant for some groups.
Random cubic planar maps
Published • View Publication • BIB
We analyse uniform random cubic rooted planar maps and obtain limiting distributions for several parameters of interest. From the enumerative point of view, we present a unified approach for the enumeration of several classes of cubic planar maps, which allow us to recover known results in a more general and transparent way. This approach allows us to obtain new enumerative results. Concerning random maps, we first obtain the distribution of the degree of the root face, which has an exponential tail as for other classes of random maps. Our main result is a limiting map-Airy distribution law for the size of the largest block $L$, whose expectation is asymptotically $n/\sqrt{3}$ in a random cubic map with $n+2$ faces. We prove analogous results for the size of the largest cubic block, obtained from $L$ by erasing all vertices of degree two, and for the size of the largest 3-connected component, whose expected values are respectively $n/2$ and $n/4$. To obtain these results we need to analyse a new type of composition scheme which has not been treated by Banderier et al. [Random Structures Algorithms 2001].

Steiner Cut Dominants
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a subset T of nodes of an undirected graph G, a T-Steiner cut is a cut δ(S) where S intersects both T and the complement of T. The T-Steiner cut dominant} of G is the dominant CUT_+(G,T) of the convex hull of the incidence vectors of the T-Steiner cuts of G. For T={s,t}, this is the well-understood s-t-cut dominant. Choosing T as the set of all nodes of G, we obtain the \emph{cut dominant}, for which an outer description in the space of the original variables is still not known. We prove that, for each integer τ, there is a finite set of inequalities such that for every pair (G,T) with |T|\ <= τthe non-trivial facet-defining inequalities of CUT_+(G,T) are the inequalities that can be obtained via iterated applications of two simple operations, starting from that set. In particular, the absolute values of the coefficients and of the right-hand-sides in a description of CUT_+(G,T) by integral inequalities can be bounded from above by a function of |T|. For all |T| <= 5 we provide descriptions of CUT_+(G,T) by facet defining inequalities, extending the known descriptions of s-t-cut dominants.

We study the possible singularities of Miyaoka-Kobayashi curves and prove several results about the non-existence of such curves in degrees $\geq 8$.
A New Upper Bound for the d-dimensional Algebraic Connectivity of Arbitrary Graphs
In this paper we show that the $d$-dimensional algebraic connectivity of an arbitrary graph $G$ is bounded above by its $1$-dimensional algebraic connectivity, i.e., $a_d(G) \leq a_1(G)$, where $a_1(G)$ corresponds the well-studied second smallest eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian.

Quantum isomorphic strongly regular graphs from the $E_8$ root system
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article, we give a first example of a pair of quantum isomorphic, non-isomorphic strongly regular graphs, that is, non-isomorphic strongly regular graphs having the same homomorphism counts from all planar graphs. The pair consists of the orthogonality graph of the $120$ lines spanned by the $E_8$ root system and a rank $4$ graph whose complement was first discovered by Brouwer, Ivanov and Klin. Both graphs are strongly regular with parameters $(120, 63, 30, 36)$. Using Godsil-McKay switching, we obtain more quantum isomorphic, non-isomorphic strongly regular graphs with the same parameters.
3-Plethysms of homogeneous and elementary symmetric functions
We introduce the new combinatorial approach of plethystic type of tableaux, as a method to understand coefficients of Schur functions appearing in plethysms $s_ν[h_λ]$ and $s_ν[e_λ]$, for any partitions $λ$ and $ν$. We first give general results about this approach, then use results on tableaux, ribbon tableaux and integer points in polytopes to understand the case where $ν$ is a partition of $3$ and $λ$ has one part. We then use a \textit{Kronecker map} to extend these results to any partition $λ$.

Universality for cokernels of random matrix products
Published • View Publication • BIB
For random integer matrices $M_1,\ldots,M_k \in \operatorname{Mat}_n(\mathbb{Z})$ with independent entries, we study the distribution of the cokernel $\operatorname{cok}(M_1 \cdots M_k)$ of their product. We show that this distribution converges to a universal one as $n \to \infty$ for a general class of matrix entry distributions, and more generally show universal limits for the joint distribution of $\operatorname{cok}(M_1),\operatorname{cok}(M_1M_2),\ldots,\operatorname{cok}(M_1 \cdots M_k)$. Furthermore, we characterize the universal distributions arising as marginals of a natural generalization of the Cohen-Lenstra measure to sequences of abelian groups with maps between them, which weights sequences inversely proportionally to their number of automorphisms. The proofs develop an extension of the moment method of Wood to joint moments of multiple groups, and rely also on the connection to Hall-Littlewood polynomials and symmetric function identities. As a corollary we obtain an explicit universal distribution for coranks of random matrix products over $\mathbb{F}_p$ as the matrix size tends to infinity.
Enumeration of max-pooling responses with generalized permutohedra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the combinatorics of max-pooling layers, which are functions that downsample input arrays by taking the maximum over shifted windows of input coordinates, and which are commonly used in convolutional neural networks. We obtain results on the number of linearity regions of these functions by equivalently counting the number of vertices of certain Minkowski sums of simplices. We characterize the faces of such polytopes and obtain generating functions and closed formulas for the number of vertices and facets in a 1D max-pooling layer depending on the size of the pooling windows and stride, and for the number of vertices in a special case of 2D max-pooling.

On Symmetric Pseudo-Boolean Functions: Factorization, Kernels and Applications
A symmetric pseudo-Boolean function is a map from Boolean tuples to real numbers which is invariant under input variable interchange. We prove that any such function can be equivalently expressed as a power series or factorized. The kernel of a pseudo-Boolean function is the set of all inputs that cause the function to vanish identically. Any $n$-variable symmetric pseudo-Boolean function $f(x_1, x_2, \dots, x_n)$ has a kernel corresponding to at least one $n$-affine hyperplane, each hyperplane is given by a constraint $\sum_{l=1}^n x_l = λ$ for $λ\in \mathbb{C}$ constant. We use these results to analyze symmetric pseudo-Boolean functions appearing in the literature of spin glass energy functions (Ising models), quantum information and tensor networks.

Hit and Run Sampling from Tropically Convex Sets
Published in Alg. Stat. 14 (2023) 37-69 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we propose Hit and Run (HAR) sampling from a tropically convex set. The key ingredient of HAR sampling from a tropically convex set is sampling uniformly from a tropical line segment over the tropical projective torus, which runs linearly in its computational time complexity. We show that this HAR sampling method samples uniformly from a tropical polytope which is the smallest tropical convex set of finitely many vertices. Finally, we apply this novel method to any given distribution using Metropolis-Hasting filtering over a tropical polytope.

Equidistribution and partition polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Using equidistribution criteria, we establish divisibility by cyclotomic polynomials of several partition polynomials of interest, including $spt$-crank, overpartition pairs, and $t$-core partitions. As corollaries, we obtain new proofs of various Ramanujan-type congruences for associated partition functions. Moreover, using results of Erdös and Turán, we establish the equidistribution of roots of partition polynomials on the unit circle including those for the rank, crank, $spt$, and unimodal sequences. Our results complement earlier work on this topic by Stanley, Boyer-Goh, and others. We explain how our methods may be used to establish similar results for other partition polynomials of interest, and offer many related open questions and examples.

Cubic bipartite graphs with minimum spectral gap
The difference between the two largest eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of a graph $G$ is called the spectral gap of $G.$ If $G$ is a regular graph, then its spectral gap is equal to algebraic connectivity. Abdi, Ghorbani and Imrich, in [European J. Combin. 95 (2021) 103328], showed that the minimum algebraic connectivity of cubic connected graphs on $2n$ vertices is $(1+o(1))\frac{π^{2}}{2n^{2}}$, which is attained on non-bipartite graphs. Motivated by the above result, we in this paper investigate the algebraic connectivity of cubic bipartite graphs. We prove that the minimum algebraic connectivity of cubic bipartite graphs on $2n$ vertices is $(1+o(1))\frac{π^{2}}{n^{2}}$. Moreover, the unique cubic bipartite graph with minimum algebraic connectivity is completed characterized. Based on the relation between the algebraic connectivity and spectral gap of regular graphs, the cubic bipartite graph with minimum spectral gap and the corresponding asymptotic value are also presented. In [J. Graph Theory 99 (2022) 671--690], Horak and Kim established a sharp upper bound for the number of perfect matchings in terms of the Fibonacci number. We obtain a spectral characterization for the extremal graphs by showing that a cubic bipartite graph has the maximum number of perfect matchings if and only if it minimizes the algebraic connectivity.

On the maximum spread of planar and outerplanar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The spread of a graph $G$ is the difference between the largest and smallest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G$. Gotshall, O'Brien and Tait conjectured that for sufficiently large $n$, the $n$-vertex outerplanar graph with maximum spread is the graph obtained by joining a vertex to a path on $n-1$ vertices. In this paper, we disprove this conjecture by showing that the extremal graph is the graph obtained by joining a vertex to a path on $\lceil (2n-1)/3\rceil$ vertices and $\lfloor(n-2)/3\rfloor$ isolated vertices. For planar graphs, we show that the extremal $n$-vertex planar graph attaining the maximum spread is the graph obtained by joining two nonadjacent vertices to a path on $\lceil(2n-2)/3\rceil$ vertices and $\lfloor(n-4)/3\rfloor$ isolated vertices.

On the positivity of infinite products connected to partitions with even parts below odd parts and copartitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we give a combinatorial proof of a positivity result of Chern related to Andrews's $\mathcal{EO}^*$-type partitions. This combinatorial proof comes after reframing Chern's result in terms of copartitions. Using this new perspective, we also reprove an overpartition result of Chern by showing that it comes essentially "for free" from our combinatorial proof and some basic properties of copartitions. Finally, the application of copartitions leads us to more general positivity conjectures for families of both infinite and finite products, with a proof in one special case.

On possible sums from multiset of powers of $d$
Let $A$ be a finite multiset of powers of a positive integer $d>1$. We describe the structure of the set $\mathrm{span}(A)$ of all sums of submultisets of $A$, and in particular give a criterion of $\mathrm{span}(A)=\mathrm{span}(B)$ for two multisets $A,B$.

Generic Classification and Asymptotic Enumeration of Dope Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a complex polynomial $P$ of degree $n$ and an $m$-tuple of distinct complex numbers $Λ=(λ_1,\ldots,λ_m)$, the dope matrix $D_P(Λ)$ is defined as the $m \times (n+1)$ matrix $(c)_{ij}$ with $c_{ij} =1$ if $P^{(j)}(λ_i)=0$ and $c_{ij}=0$ otherwise. We classify the set of dope matrices when the entries of $Λ$ are algebraically independent, resolving a conjecture of Alon, Kravitz, and O'Bryant. We also provide asymptotic upper and lower bounds on the total number of $m \times (n+1)$ dope matrices. For $m$ much smaller than $n$, these bounds give an asymptotic estimate of the logarithm of the number of $m \times (n+1)$ dope matrices.

Ramsey Numbers through the Lenses of Polynomial Ideals and Nullstellensätze
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we study the Ramsey numbers $R(r,s)$ through Hilbert's Nullstellensatz and Alon's Combinatorial Nullstellensatz. We give polynomial encodings whose solutions correspond to Ramsey graphs of order $n$, those that do not contain a copy of $K_r$ or $\bar{K}_s$. When these systems have no solution and $n \ge R(r,s)$, we construct Nullstellensatz certificates whose degrees are equal to the restricted online Ramsey numbers introduced by Conlon, Fox, Grinshpun and He. Moreover, we show that these results generalize to other numbers in Ramsey theory, including Rado, van der Waerden, and Hales-Jewett numbers. Finally, we introduce a family of numbers that relate to the coefficients of a certain "Ramsey polynomial" that gives lower bounds for Ramsey numbers.

Rainbow Subgraphs in Edge-colored Complete Graphs -- Answering two Questions by Erdős and Tuza
Published • View Publication • BIB
An edge-coloring of a complete graph with a set of colors $C$ is called completely balanced if any vertex is incident to the same number of edges of each color from $C$. Erdős and Tuza asked in $1993$ whether for any graph $F$ on $\ell$ edges and any completely balanced coloring of any sufficiently large complete graph using $\ell$ colors contains a rainbow copy of $F$. This question was restated by Erdős in his list of ``Some of my favourite problems on cycles and colourings''. We answer this question in the negative for most cliques $F=K_q$ by giving explicit constructions of respective completely balanced colorings. Further, we answer a related question concerning completely balanced colorings of complete graphs with more colors than the number of edges in the graph $F$.

A survey of Heffter arrays
Published • View Publication • BIB
Heffter arrays were introduced by Archdeacon in 2015 as an interesting link between combinatorial designs and topological graph theory. Since the initial paper on this topic, there has been a good deal of interest in Heffter arrays as well as in related topics such as the sequencing of subsets of a group, biembeddings of cycle systems on a surface, and orthogonal cycle systems. This survey presents an overview of the current state of the art of this topic. We begin with an introduction to Heffter arrays for the reader who is unfamiliar with the subject, then we give a unified and comprehensive presentation of the major results, showing some proof methods also. This survey also includes sections on the connections of Heffter arrays to several other combinatorial objects, such as problems on partial sums and sequenceability, biembedding graphs on surfaces, difference families and orthogonal graph decompositions. These sections are followed by a section discussing the variants and generalizations of Heffter arrays which have been proposed. The survey itself is complemented by a list of unsolved problems as well as an updated and complete bibliography.
