Counting Dope Matrices

For a polynomial $P$ of degree $n$ and an $m$-tuple $Λ=(λ_1,\dots,λ_m)$ of distinct complex numbers, the dope matrix of $P$ with respect to $Λ$ is $D_P(Λ)=(δ_{ij})_{i\in [1,m],j\in[0,n]}$, where $δ_{ij}=1$ if $P^{(j)}(λ_i)=0$, and $δ_{ij}=0$ otherwise. Our first result is a combinatorial characterization of the $2$-row dope matrices (for all pairs $Λ$); using this characterization, we solve the associated enumeration problem. We also give upper bounds on the number of $m\times(n+1)$ dope matrices, and we show that the number of $m \times (n+1)$ dope matrices for a fixed $m$-tuple $Λ$ is maximized when $Λ$ is generic. Finally, we resolve an ``extension'' problem of Nathanson and present several open problems.
A Note on the Number of Regions in a Line Arrangement
For an arrangement of $n$ lines in the real projective plane, we denote by $f$ the number of regions into which the real projective plane is divided by the lines. Using Bojanowski's inequality, we establish a new lower bound for $f$. In particular, we show that if no more than $\frac{2}{3}n$ lines intersect at any point, then $f \ge \frac{1}{6}n^{2}$
Odd coloring of 2-boundary planar graphs and beyond

In this paper, we introduce the notion of 2-boundary planar graphs. A graph is 2-boundary planar if it has an embedding in the plane so that all vertices lie on the boundary of at most two faces and no edges are crossed. A proper coloring of a graph is odd if every non-isolated vertex has some color that appears an odd number of times on its neighborhood. Petruševski and Škrekovski conjectured in 2022 that every planar graph admits an odd 5-coloring. We confirm this conjecture for 2-boundary planar graphs. Moreover, we present several questions regarding 2-boundary planar graphs that are of independent interest.
Symplectic inner product graphs and their automorphisms
A new graph, called the symplectic inner product graph $Spi\big(2ν,q\big)$, over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ is introduced. We show that $Spi\big(2ν,q\big)$ is connected with diameter $4$ if and only if $ν\geq2$ and the automorphism group of $Spi\big(2ν,q\big)$ is determined. Two necessary and sufficient conditions for two vertices of $Spi\big(2ν,q\big)$ and two edges of $Spi\big(2ν,q\big)$ respectively are in the same orbit under the action of the automorphism group of $Spi\big(2ν,q\big)$ are obtained.

Given an arbitrary connected $G$, the $n$-polygon graph $τ_n(G)$ is obtained by adding a path with length $n$ $(n\geq 2)$ to each edge of graph $G$, and the iterated $n$-polygon graphs $τ_n^g(G)$ ($g\geq 0$), is obtained from the iteration $τ_n^g(G)=τ_n(τ_n^{g-1}(G))$, with initial condition $τ_n^0(G)=G$. In this paper, a method for calculating the eigenvalues of normalized Laplacian matrix for graph $τ_n(G)$ is presented if the eigenvalues of normalized Laplacian matrix for graph $G$ is given firstly. Then, the normalized Laplacian spectrums for the graph $τ_n(G)$ and the graphs $τ_n^g(G)$ ($g\geq 0$) can also be derived. Finally, as applications, we calculate the multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, Kemeny's constant and the number of spanning trees for the graph $τ_n(G)$ and the graphs $τ_n^g(G)$ by exploring their connections with the normalized Laplacian spectrum, exact results for these quantities are obtained.
On the Sombor index and Sombor energy of m-splitting graph and m-shadow graph of regular graphs
A vertex-degree-based topological index named as Sombor index of a simple graph G with n vertices was recently introduced by I. Gutman. In this paper, we find Sombor index of m-splitting graph and m-shadow graph. Also, we determine relation between energy and Sombor energy of m-splitting graph and m-shadow graph of k-regular graph.

We propose a classification of all one-dimensional discrete statistical models with maximum likelihood degree one based on their rational parametrization. We show how all such models can be constructed from members of a smaller class of 'fundamental models' using a finite number of simple operations. We introduce 'chipsplitting games', a class of combinatorial games on a grid which we use to represent fundamental models. This combinatorial perspective enables us to show that there are only finitely many fundamental models in the probability simplex $Δ_n$ for $n\leq 4$.

MacPherson conjectured that the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(2, \mathbb{R}^n)$ has the same homeomorphism type as the combinatorial Grassmannian $\|\mbox{MacP}(2,n)\|$, while Babson proved that the spaces $\mathrm{Gr}(2,\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $\mathrm{Gr}(1,2,\mathbb{R}^n)$ are homotopy equivalent to their combinatorial analogs $\|\mathrm{MacP}(2,n)\|$ and $\|\mbox{MacP}(1,2,n)\|$ respectively. We will prove that $\mathrm{Gr}(2, \mathbb{R}^n)$ and $\mathrm{Gr}(1,2, \mathbb{R}^n)$ are homeomorphic to $\|\mbox{MacP}(2,n)\|$ and $\|\mbox{MacP}(1,2,n)\|$ respectively.
Khinchin families, set constructions, partitions and exponentials
In this paper, we give a simple criterion to verify that functions of the form $e^g$ are in the Hayman class when $g$ is a power series with nonnegative coefficients. Thus, using the Hayman and Báez-Duarte formulas, we obtain asymptotics for the coefficients of generating functions that arise in many examples of set construction in analytic combinatorics. This new criterion greatly simplifies that obtained previously by the authors.
Line Planning in Public Transport: Bypassing Line Pool Generation
Line planning, i.e. choosing paths which are operated by one vehicle end-to-end, is an important aspect of public transport planning. While there exists heuristic procedures for generating lines from scratch, most theoretical observations consider the problem of choosing lines from a predefined line pool. In this paper, we consider the complexity of the line planning problem when all simple paths can be used as lines. Depending on the cost structure, we show that the problem can be NP-hard even for paths and stars and that no polynomial time approximation of sub-linear performance is possible. Additionally, we identify polynomially solvable cases and present a pseudo-polynomial solution approach for trees.

Let $\mathcal{C}_n =\left [χ_λ(μ)\right]_{λ, μ}$ be the character table for $S_n,$ where the indices $λ$ and $μ$ run over the $p(n)$ many integer partitions of $n.$ In this note we study $Z_{\ell}(n),$ the number of zero entries $χ_λ(μ)$ in $\mathcal{C}_n,$ where $λ$ is an $\ell$-core partition of $n.$ For every prime $\ell\geq 5,$ we prove an asymptotic formula of the form $$ Z_{\ell}(n)\sim α_{\ell}\cdot σ_{\ell}(n+δ_{\ell})p(n)\gg_{\ell} n^{\frac{\ell-5}{2}}e^{π\sqrt{2n/3}},$$ where $σ_{\ell}(n)$ is a twisted Legendre symbol divisor function, $δ_{\ell}:=(\ell^2-1)/24,$ and $1/α_{\ell}>0$ is a normalization of the Dirichlet $L$-value $L\left(\left(\frac{\cdot}{\ell}\right),\frac{\ell-1}{2}\right).$ For primes $\ell$ and $n>\ell^6/24,$ we show that $χ_λ(μ)=0$ whenever $λ$ and $μ$ are both $\ell$-cores. Furthermore, if $Z^*_{\ell}(n)$ is the number of zero entries indexed by two $\ell$-cores, then for $\ell\geq 5$ we obtain the asymptotic $$ Z^*_{\ell}(n)\sim α_{\ell}^2 \cdot σ_{\ell}( n+δ_{\ell})^2 \gg_{\ell} n^{\ell-3}. $$

An $X$-TAR (token addition/removal) reconfiguration graph has as its vertices sets that satisfy some property $X$, with an edge between two sets if one is obtained from the other by adding or removing one element. This paper considers the $X$-TAR graph for $X-$ sets of vertices of a base graph $G$ where the $X$-sets of $G$ must satisfy certain conditions. Dominating sets, power dominating sets, zero forcing sets, and positive semidefinite zero forcing sets are all examples of $X$-sets. For graphs $G$ and $G'$ with no isolated vertices, it is shown that $G$ and $G'$ have isomorphic $X$-TAR reconfiguration graphs if and only if there is a relabeling of the vertices of $G'$ such that $G$ and $G'$ have exactly the same $X$-sets. The concept of an $X$-irrelevant vertex is introduced to facilitate analysis of $X$-TAR graph isomorphisms. Furthermore, results related to the connectedness of the zero forcing TAR graph are given. We present families of graphs that exceed known lower bounds for connectedness parameters.
A new statistic on Dyck paths for counting 3-dimensional Catalan words

A 3-dimensional Catalan word is a word on three letters so that the subword on any two letters is a Dyck path. For a given Dyck path $D$, a recently defined statistic counts the number of Catalan words with the property that any subword on two letters is exactly $D$. In this paper, we enumerate Dyck paths with this statistic equal to certain values, including all primes. The formulas obtained are in terms of Motzkin numbers and Motzkin ballot numbers.
Highly tree-connected complementary modulo factors with bounded degrees
Let $G$ be a bipartite graph with bipartition $(X,Y)$, let $k$ be a positive integer, and let $f:V(G)\rightarrow Z_k$ be a mapping with $\sum_{v\in X}f(v) \stackrel{k}{\equiv}\sum_{v\in Y}f(v)$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is $(2m+2m_0+4k-4)$-edge-connected and $m+m_0>0$, then $G$ has an $m$-tree-connected factor $H$ such that its complement is $m_0$-tree-connected and for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\stackrel{k}{\equiv} f(v)$, and $$\lfloor\frac{d_G(v)}{2}\rfloor-(k-1)-m_0\le d_{H}(v)\le \lceil\frac{d_G(v)}{2}\rceil+k-1+m.$$ Next, we generalize this result to general graphs and derive a sufficient degree condition for a highly edge-connected general graph $G$ to have a connected factor $H$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\in \{f(v),f(v)+k\}$. Finally, we show that every $(4k-2)$-tree-connected graph admits a bipartite connected factor whose degrees are divisible by $k$.
List Multicoloring of Planar Graphs and Related Classes
For positive integers $a$ and $b$, a graph $G$ is $(a:b)$-choosable if, for each assignment of lists of $a$ colors to the vertices of $G,$ each vertex can be colored with a set of $b$ colors from its list so that adjacent vertices are colored with disjoint sets. We show that for positive integers $a$ and $b$, every bipartite planar graph is $(a:b)$-choosable iff $\frac{a}{b} \ge 3$. For general planar graphs, we show that if $\frac{a}{b} < 4\frac{2}{5}$, then there exists a planar graph that is not $(a:b)$-choosable, thus improving on a result of X. Zhu, which had $4\frac{2}{9}$. Lastly, we show that every $K_5$-minor-free graph is $(a:b)$-choosable iff $\frac{a}{b} \ge 5$. Along the way, we mention some open problems.

We present a systematic investigation into how tree-decompositions of finite adhesion capture topological properties of the space formed by a graph together with its ends. As main results, we characterise when the ends of a graph can be distinguished, and characterise which subsets of ends can be displayed by a tree-decomposition of finite adhesion. In particular, we show that a subset $Ψ$ of the ends of a graph $G$ can be displayed by a tree-decomposition of finite adhesion if and only if $Ψ$ is $G_δ$ (a countable intersection of open sets) in $|G|$, the topological space formed by a graph together with its ends. Since the undominated ends of a graph are easily seen to be $G_δ$, this provides a structural explanation for Carmesin's result that the set of undominated ends can always be displayed.
On congruence schemes for constant terms and their applications

Rowland and Zeilberger devised an approach to algorithmically determine the modulo $p^r$ reductions of values of combinatorial sequences representable as constant terms (building on work of Rowland and Yassawi). The resulting $p$-schemes are systems of recurrences and, depending on their shape, are classified as automatic or linear. We revisit this approach, provide some additional details such as bounding the number of states, and suggest a third natural type of scheme that combines benefits of automatic and linear ones. We illustrate the utility of these "scaling" schemes by confirming and extending a conjecture of Rowland and Yassawi on Motzkin numbers.

Let $Γ=(G,σ)$ be a signed graph, where $σ$ is the sign function on the edges of $G$. In this paper, we use the operation of partial transpose to obtain non-isomorphic Laplacian cospectral signed graphs. We will introduce two new operations on signed graphs. These operations will establish a relationship between the adjacency spectrum of one signed graph with the Laplacian spectrum of another signed graph. As an application, these new operations will be utilized to construct several pairs of cospectral non-isomorphic signed graphs. Finally, we construct integral signed graphs.
Graphical methods and rings of invariants on the symmetric algebra

Let $G$ be a complex classical group, and let $V$ be its defining representation (possibly plus a copy of the dual). A foundational problem in classical invariant theory is to write down generators and relations for the ring of $G$-invariant polynomial functions on the space $\mathcal{P}^m(V)$ of degree-$m$ homogeneous polynomial functions on $V$. In this paper, we replace $\mathcal{P}^m(V)$ with the full polynomial algebra $\mathcal{P}(V)$. As a result, the invariant ring is no longer finitely generated. Hence instead of seeking generators, we aim to write down linear bases for bigraded components. Indeed, when $G$ is of sufficiently high rank, we realize these bases as sets of graphs with prescribed number of vertices and edges. When the rank of $G$ is small, there arise complicated linear dependencies among the graphs, but we remedy this setback via representation theory: in particular, we determine the dimension of an arbitrary component in terms of branching multiplicities from the general linear group to the symmetric group. We thereby obtain an expression for the bigraded Hilbert series of the ring of invariants on $\mathcal{P}(V)$. We conclude with examples using our graphical notation, several of which recover classical results.
No Feedback? No Worries! The art of guessing the right card
In 1998, Ciucu published "No-feedback card guessing for dovetail shuffles", an article which gives the optimal guessing strategy for $n$ cards ($n$ even) after $k$ riffle shuffles whenever $k>2\log_{2}\left(n\right)$. We discuss in this article the optimal guessing strategy and the asymptotic (in $n$) expected number of correct guesses for any fixed $k\geq1$. This complements the work achieved two decades ago by Ciucu.
