Structural Properties of Graph Products
Published • View Publication • BIB
Dujmović, Joret, Micek, Morin, Ueckerdt, and Wood [J. ACM 2020] established that every planar graph is a subgraph of the strong product of a graph with bounded treewidth and a path. Motivated by this result, this paper systematically studies various structural properties of cartesian, direct and strong products. In particular, we characterise when these graph products contain a given complete multipartite subgraph, determine tight bounds for their degeneracy, establish new lower bounds for the treewidth of cartesian and strong products, and characterise when they have bounded treewidth and when they have bounded pathwidth.

Some new central parts of connected graphs
The center, median and the security center are three central parts defined for any connected graph whereas the characteristic set, subtree core and core vertices are three central parts defined for trees only. We extend the concept of the characteristic set, subtree core and core vertices to general connected graphs and call them the characteristic center, subgraph core and core vertices, respectively. We show by examples that in a connected graph all the above six central parts can be different and also prove that for a connected vertex transitive graph each of the six central parts is the whole vertex set. Further it is shown that given any graph $G$, there exists a connected supergraph $G_{ch}$ of $G$ with the whole vertex set of $G$ as the characteristic center. Associated with the subgraph core and core vertices, we leave some unanswered question related to the graph centrality.

Kernels and Small Quasi-Kernels in Digraphs
A directed graph $D=(V(D),A(D))$ has a kernel if there exists an independent set $K\subseteq V(D)$ such that every vertex $v\in V(D)-K$ has an ingoing arc $u\mathbin{\longrightarrow}v$ for some $u\in K$. There are directed graphs that do not have a kernel (e.g. a 3-cycle). A quasi-kernel is an independent set $Q$ such that every vertex can be reached in at most two steps from $Q$. Every directed graph has a quasi-kernel. A conjecture by P.L. Erdős and L.A. Székely (cf. A. Kostochka, R. Luo, and, S. Shan, arxiv:2001.04003v1, 2020) postulates that every source-free directed graph has a quasi-kernel of size at most $|V(D)|/2$, where source-free refers to every vertex having in-degree at least one. In this note it is shown that every source-free directed graph that has a kernel also has a quasi-kernel of size at most $|V(D)|/2$, by means of an induction proof. In addition, all definitions and proofs in this note are formally verified by means of the Coq proof assistant.

Book embeddings of graphs and a theorem of Whitney
Published in Extension of a theorem of Whitney, {\it Appl Math Lett.} 20 (2007) 835--837 • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that the number of pages required for a book embedding of a graph is the maximum of the numbers needed for any of the maximal nonseparable subgraphs and that a plane graph in which every triangle bounds a face has a two-page book embedding. The latter extends a theorem of H. Whitney and gives two-page book embeddings for $X$-trees and square grids.

On Bruhat intervals of small lengths for Weyl groups
The number of Bruhat intervals in Coxeter groups is finite, and for the first few lengths, the intervals were described up to an isomorphism by A. Hultman using the correspondence between Bruhat intervals and cell decompositions of a 2d sphere and straightforward computations. The main purpose of this paper consists of a description of the intervals in higher dimensions, as the Hultman's geometric method is hard to apply due to rapidly growing with length number of nonisomorphic intervals. We construct an invariant on subintervals in the Bruhat graphs, using their specific properties. This gives us a method of comparing two Bruhat interval, that is faster than the general algorithm for checking if two graphs are isomorphic. This construction is inductive, and thus, can be easily applied for any interval length and Weyl group.

Cyclic Base Ordering of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A cyclic base ordering of a connected graph $G$, is a cyclic ordering of $E(G)$ such that every cyclically consecutive $|V(G)|-1$ edges form a spanning tree. In this project, we study cyclic base ordering of various families of graphs, including square of cycles, wheel graphs, generalized wheel graphs and broken wheel graphs, fan and broken fan graphs, prism graphs, and maximal 2-degenerate graphs. We also provide a polynomial time algorithm to verify any giving edge ordering is a cyclic base ordering.

Set-valued tableaux rule for Lascoux polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Lascoux polynomials generalize Grassmannian stable Grothendieck polynomials and may be viewed as K-theoretic analogs of key polynomials. The latter two polynomials have combinatorial formulas involving tableaux: Lascoux and Schützenberger gave a combinatorial formula for key polynomials using right keys; Buch gave a set-valued tableau formula for Grassmannian stable Grothendieck polynomials. We establish a novel combinatorial rule for Lascoux polynomials involving right keys and set-valued tableaux. Our rule recovers the tableaux formulas of key polynomials and Grassmannian stable Grothendieck polynomials. To prove our rule, we construct a new abstract Kashiwara crystal structure on set-valued tableaux. This construction answers an open problem of Monical, Pechenik and Scrimshaw in the context of abstract Kashiwara crystal.

Spanning hypertrees, vertex tours and meanders
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper revisits the notion of a spanning hypertree of a hypermap introduced by one of its authors and shows that it allows to shed new light on a very diverse set of recent results. The tour of a map along one of its spanning trees used by Bernardi may be generalized to hypermaps and we show that it is equivalent to a dual tour described by Cori and Mach\`ı. We give a bijection between the spanning hypertrees of the reciprocal of the plane graph with $2$ vertices and $n$ parallel edges and the meanders of order $n$ and a bijection of the same kind between semimeanders of order $n$ and spanning hypertrees of the reciprocal of a plane graph with a single vertex and $n/2$ nested edges. We introduce hyperdeletions and hypercontractions in a hypermap which allow to count the spanning hypertrees of a hypermap recursively, and create a link with the computation of the Tutte polynomial of a graph. Having a particular interest in hypermaps which are reciprocals of maps, we generalize the reduction map introduced by Franz and Earnshaw to enumerate meanders to a reduction map that allows the enumeration of the spanning hypertrees of such hypermaps.

A generalization of Gerzon's bound on spherical s-distance sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We Use the method of linearly independent polynomials to derive an upper bound for the cardinality of a spherical s-distance set F where the sum of distinct inner products of any two elements from F is zero. Our result generalizes the well-known Gerzon's bound for the cardinality of an equiangular spherical set to a significantly broader class of spherical s-distance sets.

Polynomial bounds for chromatic number. IV. A near-polynomial bound for excluding the five-vertex path
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph G is H-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to H. We prove that a $P_5$-free graph with clique number $ω\ge 3$ has chromatic number at most $ω^{\log_2(ω)}$. The best previous result was an exponential upper bound $(5/27)3^ω$, due to Esperet, Lemoine, Maffray, and Morel. A polynomial bound would imply that the celebrated Erdos-Hajnal conjecture holds for $P_5$, which is the smallest open case. Thus there is great interest in whether there is a polynomial bound for $P_5$-free graphs, and our result is an attempt to approach that.
The bunkbed conjecture holds in the $p\uparrow 1$ limit
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a countable graph. The Bunkbed graph of $G$ is the product graph $G \times K_2$, which has vertex set $V\times \{0,1\}$ with "horizontal'' edges inherited from $G$ and additional "vertical'' edges connecting $(w,0)$ and $(w,1)$ for each $w \in V$. Kasteleyn's bunkbed conjecture states that for each $u,v \in V$ and $p\in [0,1]$, the vertex $(u,0)$ is at least as likely to be connected to $(v,0)$ as to $(v,1)$ under Bernoulli-$p$ bond percolation on the bunkbed graph. We prove that the conjecture holds in the $p \uparrow 1$ limit in the sense that for each finite graph $G$ there exists $\varepsilon(G)>0$ such that the bunkbed conjecture holds for $p \geqslant 1-\varepsilon(G)$.
Independence and orthogonality of algebraic eigenvectors over the max-plus algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
The max-plus algebra $\mathbb{R}\cup \{-\infty \}$ is a semiring with the two operations: addition $a \oplus b := \max(a,b)$ and multiplication $a \otimes b := a + b$. Roots of the characteristic polynomial of a max-plus matrix are called algebraic eigenvalues. Recently, algebraic eigenvectors with respect to algebraic eigenvalues were introduced as a generalized concept of eigenvectors. In this paper, we present properties of algebraic eigenvectors analogous to those of eigenvectors in the conventional linear algebra. First, we prove that for generic matrices algebraic eigenvectors with respect to distinct algebraic eigenvalues are linearly independent. We further prove that for symmetric matrices algebraic eigenvectors with respect to distinct algebraic eigenvalues are orthogonal to each other.

Algorithms and Complexity for Counting Configurations in Steiner Triple Systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Steiner triple systems form one of the most studied classes of combinatorial designs. Configurations, including subsystems, play a central role in the investigation of Steiner triple systems. With sporadic instances of small systems, ad-hoc algorithms for counting or listing configurations are typically fast enough for practical needs, but with many systems or large systems, the relevance of computational complexity and algorithms of low complexity is highlighted. General theoretical results as well as specific practical algorithms for important configurations are presented.

Lorentzian polynomials on cones and the Heron-Rota-Welsh conjecture
We give a short proof of the log-concavity of the coefficients of the reduced characteristic polynomial of a matroid. The proof uses an extension of the theory of Lorentzian polynomials to convex cones, and reproves the Hodge-Riemann relations of degree one for the Chow ring of a matroid.

Auto-correlation functions for unitary groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We compute the auto-correlations functions of order $m\ge 1$ for the characteristic polynomials of random matrices from certain subgroups of the unitary groups $\U(2)$ and $\U(3)$ by applying branching rules. These subgroups can be understood as analogs of Sato--Tate groups of $\USp(4)$ in our previous paper. This computation yields symmetric polynomial identities with $m$-variables involving irreducible characters of $\U(m)$ for all $m \ge 1$ in an explicit, uniform way.

Associahedra minimize $f$-vectors of secondary polytopes of planar point sets
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom., Vol. 74, 1-22, 2025 • View Publication • BIB
Kupavskii, Volostnov, and Yarovikov have recently shown that any set of $n$ points in general position in the plane has at least as many (partial) triangulations as the convex $n$-gon. We generalize this in two directions: we show that regular triangulations are enough, and we extend the result to all regular subdivisions, graded by the dimension of their corresponding face in the secondary polytope.

FFLV polytopes for odd symplectic Lie algebras
We consider "odd symplectic Lie algebras" defined in terms of maximal rank skew-symmetric forms. We provide FFLV polytopes for these algebras and prove their standard properties. In particular, we obtain a new graded character formula and PBW bases for an analogue of irreducible representations in terms of lattice points of FFLV polytopes.
Permutation Entropy for Graph Signals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Entropy metrics (for example, permutation entropy) are nonlinear measures of irregularity in time series (one-dimensional data). Some of these entropy metrics can be generalised to data on periodic structures such as a grid or lattice pattern (two-dimensional data) using its symmetry, thus enabling their application to images. However, these metrics have not been developed for signals sampled on irregular domains, defined by a graph. Here, we define for the first time an entropy metric to analyse signals measured over irregular graphs by generalising permutation entropy, a well-established nonlinear metric based on the comparison of neighbouring values within patterns in a time series. Our algorithm is based on comparing signal values on neighbouring nodes, using the adjacency matrix. We show that this generalisation preserves the properties of classical permutation for time series and the recent permutation entropy for images, and it can be applied to any graph structure with synthetic and real signals. We expect the present work to enable the extension of other nonlinear dynamic approaches to graph signals.

Ramsey theory of homogeneous structures: current trends and open problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
This article highlights historical achievements in the partition theory of countable homogeneous relational structures, and presents recent work, current trends, and open problems. Exciting recent developments include new methods involving logic, topological Ramsey spaces, and category theory. The paper concentrates on big Ramsey degrees, presenting their essential structure where known and outlining areas for further development. Cognate areas, including infinite dimensional Ramsey theory of homogeneous structures and partition theory of uncountable structures, are also discussed.

Fibonacci numbers, consecutive patterns, and inverse peaks
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 141: Article #102406, 19 pp., 2022 • View Publication • BIB
We give multiple proofs of two formulas concerning the enumeration of permutations avoiding a monotone consecutive pattern with a certain value for the inverse peak number or inverse left peak number statistic. The enumeration in both cases is given by a sequence related to Fibonacci numbers. We also show that there is exactly one permutation whose inverse peak number is zero among all permutations with any fixed descent composition, and we give a few elementary consequences of this fact. Our proofs involve generating functions, symmetric functions, regular expressions, and monomino-domino tilings.
