Large rainbow matchings in edge-colored graphs with given average color degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
A rainbow matching in an edge-colored graph is a matching in which no two edges have the same color. The color degree of a vertex v is the number of different colors on edges incident to v. Kritschgau [Electron. J. Combin. 27(2020)] studied the existence of rainbow matchings in edge-colored graph G with average color degree at least 2k, and proved some sufficient conditions for a rainbow marching of size k in G. The sufficient conditions include that |V(G)|>=12k^2+4k, or G is a properly edge-colored graph with |V(G)|>=8k. In this paper, we show that every edge-colored graph G with |V(G)|>=4k-4 and average color degree at least 2k-1 contains a rainbow matching of size k. In addition, we also prove that every strongly edge-colored graph G with average degree at least 2k-1 contains a rainbow matching of size at least k. The bound is sharp for complete graphs.
On certain regular nicely distance-balanced graphs
A connected graph $\G$ is called {\em nicely distance--balanced}, whenever there exists a positive integer $γ=γ(\G)$, such that for any two adjacent vertices $u,v$ of $\G$ there are exactly $γ$ vertices of $\G$ which are closer to $u$ than to $v$, and exactly $γ$ vertices of $\G$ which are closer to $v$ than to $u$. Let $d$ denote the diameter of $\G$. It is known that $d \le γ$, and that nicely distance-balanced graphs with $γ= d$ are precisely complete graphs and cycles of length $2d$ or $2d+1$. In this paper we classify regular nicely distance-balanced graphs with $γ=d+1$.

Tensor products of coherent configurations
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Cartesian decomposition of a coherent configuration $\cal X$ is defined as a special set of its parabolics that form a Cartesian decomposition of the underlying set. It turns out that every tensor decomposition of $\cal X$ comes from a certain Cartesian decomposition. It is proved that if the coherent configuration $\cal X$ is thick, then there is a unique maximal Cartesian decomposition of $\cal X$, i.e., there is exactly one internal tensor decomposition of $\cal X$ into indecomposable components. In particular, this implies an analog of the Krull--Schmidt theorem for the thick coherent configurations. A polynomial-time algorithm for finding the maximal Cartesian decomposition of a thick coherent configuration is constructed.

Nonlinear Lie-Type Derivations of finitary Incidence Algebras and Related Topics
This is a continuation of our earlier works \cite{KhrypchenkoWei, Yang20211, Yang20212} with respect to (non-)linear Lie-type derivations of finitary incidence algebras. Let $X$ be a pre-ordered set, $\mathcal{R}$ be a $2$-torsionfree and $(n-1)$-torsionfree commutative ring with identity, where $n\geq 2$ is an integer. Let $FI(X,\mathcal{R})$ be the finitary incidence algebra of $X$ over $\mathcal{R}$. In this paper, a complete clarification is obtained for the structure of nonlinear Lie-type derivations of $FI(X,\mathcal{R})$. We introduce a new class of derivations on $FI(X,\mathcal{R})$ named inner-like derivations, and prove that each nonlinear Lie $n$-derivation on $FI(X,\mathcal{R})$ is the sum of an inner-like derivation, a transitive induced derivation and a quasi-additive induced Lie $n$-derivation. Furthermore, if $X$ is finite, we show that a quasi-additive induced Lie $n$-derivation can be expressed as the sum of an additive induced Lie derivation and a central-valued map annihilating all $(n-1)$-th commutators. We also provide a sufficient and necessary condition such that every nonlinear Lie $n$-derivation of $FI(X,\mathcal{R})$ is of proper form. Some related topics for further research are proposed in the last section of this article.

On the Decycling Number of Bubble-sort Star Graphs
Bubble-sort star graphs are a combination of star graphs and bubble sort graphs. They are bipartite graphs and also form a family of Cayley graphs. The decycling number of a graph is the minimum number of vertices whose removal from the graph results in an acyclic subgraph. In this paper, we prove the decycling number D(n) of an n-dimensional bubble-sort star graph for n <= 5. We also show D(n) satisfies the inequalities for n >= 6.

Dominance Solvability in Random Games
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the effectiveness of iterated elimination of strictly-dominated actions in random games. We show that dominance solvability of games is vanishingly small as the number of at least one player's actions grows. Furthermore, conditional on dominance solvability, the number of iterations required to converge to Nash equilibrium grows rapidly as action sets grow. Nonetheless, when games are highly imbalanced, iterated elimination simplifies the game substantially by ruling out a sizable fraction of actions. Technically, we illustrate the usefulness of recent combinatorial methods for the analysis of general games.

On Symmetric Invertible Binary Pairing Functions
We construct a symmetric invertible binary pairing function $F(m,n)$ on the set of positive integers with a property of $F(m,n)=F(n,m)$. Then we provide a complete proof of its symmetry and bijectivity, from which the construction of symmetric invertible binary pairing functions on any custom set of integers could be seen.

Four Amazing Positivities with Dimers/i-Matchings
We collect a number of striking recent results in a study of dimers on infinite regular bipartite lattices and also on regular bipartite graphs. We clearly separate rigorously proven results from conjectures. A primary goal is to show people: here is a field which is ripe for further interesting research. We separate four classes of endeavor, of which we here extract two items to whet one's appetite. Primo, for hyper-rectangular lattices of every dimension the first 20 virial coefficients are positive. (One has no understanding of this yet!) Secondo, all regular bipartite graphs with less than $14$ vertices satisfy graph positivity, defined below. (Here there is some understanding.)
Homotopies in Multiway (Non-Deterministic) Rewriting Systems as $n$-Fold Categories
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate algebraic and compositional properties of abstract multiway rewriting systems, which are archetypical structures underlying the formalism of the Wolfram model. We demonstrate the existence of higher homotopies in this class of rewriting systems, where homotopical maps are induced by the inclusion of appropriate rewriting rules taken from an abstract rulial space of all possible such rules. Furthermore, we show that a multiway rewriting system with homotopies up to order $n$ may naturally be formalized as an $n$-fold category, such that (upon inclusion of appropriate inverse morphisms via invertible rewriting relations) the infinite limit of this structure yields an ${\infty}$-groupoid. Via Grothendieck's homotopy hypothesis, this ${\infty}$-groupoid thus inherits the structure of a formal homotopy space. We conclude with some comments on how this computational framework of homotopical multiway systems may potentially be used for making formal connections to homotopy spaces upon which models relevant to physics may be instantiated.

Three new decompositions of graphs based on a vertex-removing synchronised graph product
Recently, we have introduced and modified two graph-decomposition theorems based on a new graph product, motivated by applications in the context of synchronising periodic real-time processes. This vertex-removing synchronised product (VRSP), is based on modifications of the well-known Cartesian product, and is closely related to the synchronised product due to Wohrle and Thomas. Here, we recall the definition of the VRSP and the two modified graph-decompositions and introduce three new graph-decomposition theorems. The first new theorem decomposes a graph with respect to the semicomplete bipartite subgraphs of the graph. For the second new theorem, we introduce a matrix graph, which is used to decompose a graph in a manner similar to the decomposition of graphs using the Cartesian product. In the third new theorem, we combine these two types of decomposition. Ultimately, the goal of these graph-decomposition theorems is to come to a prime-graph decomposition.

$\mathbb{F}_q$-zeros of sparse trivariate polynomials and toric 3-fold codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a given lattice polytope $P$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$, consider the space $\mathcal{L}_P$ of trivariate polynomials over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, whose Newton polytopes are contained in $P$. We give an upper bound for the maximum number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-zeros of polynomials in $\mathcal{L}_P$ in terms of the Minkowski length of $P$ and $q$, the size of the field. Consequently, this produces lower bounds for the minimum distance of toric codes defined by evaluating elements of $\mathcal{L}_P$ at the points of the algebraic torus $(\mathbb{F}_q^*)^3$. Our approach is based on understanding factorizations of polynomials in $\mathcal{L}_P$ with the largest possible number of non-unit factors. The related combinatorial result that we obtain is a description of Minkowski sums of lattice polytopes contained in $P$ with the largest possible number of non-trivial summands.

Three families of $q$-Lommel polynomials
Three $q$-versions of Lommel polynomials are studied. Included are explicit representations, recurrences, continued fractions, and connections to associated Askey--Wilson polynomials. Combinatorial results are emphasized, including a general theorem when $R_I$ moments coincide with orthogonal polynomial moments. The combinatorial results use weighted Motzkin paths, Schröder paths, and parallelogram polyominoes.

Permutation actions on Quiver Grassmannians for the equioriented cycle via GKM-Theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
In previous work we equipped quiver Grassmannians for nilpotent representations of the equioriented cycle with an action of an algebraic torus. We show here that the equivariant cohomology ring is acted upon by a product of symmetric groups and we investigate this permutation action via GKM techniques. In the case of (type A) flag varieties, or Schubert varieties therein, we recover Tymoczko's results on permutation representations.

Bijections for Ranked Tree-Child Networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
The class of ranked tree-child networks, tree-child networks arising from an evolution process with a fixed embedding into the plane, has recently been introduced by Bienvenu, Lambert, and Steel. These authors derived counting results for this class. In this note, we will give bijective proofs of three of their results. Two of our bijections answer questions raised in their paper.
Self-adjointness of magnetic laplacians on triangulations
The notions of magnetic difference operator defined on weighted graphs or magnetic exterior derivative are discrete analogues of the notionof covariant derivative on sections of a fibre bundle and its extension on differential forms. In this paper, we extend this notion to certain 2-simplicial complexes called triangulations, in a manner compatible with changes of gauge. Then we study the magnetic Gauss-Bonnet operator naturally defined in this context and introduce the geometric hypothesis of $χ-$completeness which ensures the essential self-adjointness of this operator. This gives also the essential self-adjointness of the magnetic Laplacian on triangulations. Finally we introduce an hypothesis of bounded curvature for the magnetic potential which permits to characterize the domain of the self-adjoint extension.

Rainbow spanning structures in graph and hypergraph systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the following rainbow version of subgraph containment problems in a family of (hyper)graphs, which generalizes the classical subgraph containment problems in a single host graph. For a collection $\textbf{G}=\{G_1, G_2,\ldots, G_{m}\}$ of not necessarily distinct $k$-graphs on the same vertex set $[n]$, a (sub)graph $H$ on $[n]$ is rainbow if there exists an injection $\varphi: E(H)\rightarrow[m]$ such that $e\in E(G_{\varphi(e)})$ for each $e\in E(H)$. Note that if $|E(H)|=m$, then $\varphi$ is a bijection and thus $H$ contains exactly one edge from each $G_i$. Our main results focus on rainbow clique-factors in (hyper)graph systems with minimum $d$-degree conditions. Specifically, we establish the following: (1) A rainbow analogue of an asymptotical version of the Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem, namely, if $t\mid n$ and $δ(G_i)\geq(1-\frac{1}{t}+\varepsilon)n$ for each $i\in[\frac{n}{t}\binom{t}{2}]$, then $\textbf{G}$ contains a rainbow $K_t$-factor; (2) Essentially a minimum $d$-degree condition forcing a perfect matching in a $k$-graph also forces rainbow perfect matchings in $k$-graph systems for $d\in[k-1]$. The degree assumptions in both results are asymptotically best possible (although the minimum $d$-degree condition forcing a perfect matching in a $k$-graph is in general unknown). For (1) we also discuss two directed versions and a multipartite version. Finally, to establish these results, we in fact provide a general framework to attack this type of problems, which reduces it to subproblems with finitely many colors.

A General Family of $q$-Hypergeometric Polynomials and Associated Generating Functions
Published in Mathematics 9 (11), 1161 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we introduce a general family of $q$-hypergeometric polynomials and investigate several $q$-series identities such as an extended generating function and a Srivastava-Agarwal type bilinear generating function for this family of $q$-hypergeometric polynomials. We give a transformational identity involving generating functions for the generalized $q$-hypergeometric polynomials which we have introduced here. We also point out relevant connections of the various $q$-results, which we investigate here, with those in several related earlier works on this subject. We conclude this paper by remarking that it will be a rather trivial and inconsequential exercise to give the so-called $(p,q)$-variations of the $q$-results, which we have investigated here, because the additional parameter $p$ is obviously redundant.
Pinnacle Set Properties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let pi = pi_1 pi_2 ... pi_n be a permutation in the symmetric group S_n written in one-line notation. The pinnacle set of pi, denoted Pin pi, is the set of all pi_i such that pi_{i-1} < pi_i > pi_{i+1}. This is an analogue of the well-studied peak set of pi where one considers values rather than positions. The pinnacle set was introduced by Davis, Nelson, Petersen, and Tenner who showed that it has many interesting properties. In particular, they proved that the number of subsets of [n] = {1, 2, ..., n} which can be the pinnacle set of some permutation is a binomial coefficient. Their proof involved a bijection with lattice paths and was somewhat involved. We give a simpler demonstration of this result which does not need lattice paths. Moreover, we show that our map and theirs are different descriptions of the same function. Davis et al. also studied the number of pinnacle sets with maximum m and cardinality d which they denoted by p(m,d). We show that these integers are ballot numbers and give two proofs of this fact: one using finite differences and one bijective. Diaz-Lopez, Harris, Huang, Insko, and Nilsen found a summation formula for calculating the number of permutations in S_n having a given pinnacle set. We derive a new expression for this number which is faster to calculate in many cases. We also show how this method can be adapted to find the number of orderings of a pinnacle set which can be realized by some pi in S_n.

Twisted Linearized Reed-Solomon Codes: A Skew Polynomial Framework
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide an algebraic description for sum-rank metric codes, as quotient space of a skew polynomial ring. This approach generalizes at the same time the skew group algebra setting for rank-metric codes and the polynomial setting for codes in the Hamming metric. This allows to construct twisted linearized Reed-Solomon codes, a new family of maximum sum-rank distance codes extending at the same time Sheekey's twisted Gabidulin codes in the rank metric and twisted Reed-Solomon codes in the Hamming metric. Furthermore, we provide an analogue in the sum-rank metric of Trombetti-Zhou construction, which also provides a family of maximum sum-rank distance codes. As a byproduct, in the extremal case of the Hamming metric, we obtain a new family of additive MDS codes over quadratic fields.
