Alternating Signed Bipartite Graphs and Difference-1 Colourings
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate a class of 2-edge coloured bipartite graphs known as alternating signed bipartite graphs (ASBGs) that encode the information in alternating sign matrices. The central question is when a given bipartite graph admits an ASBG-colouring; a 2-edge colouring such that the resulting graph is an ASBG. We introduce the concept of a difference-1 colouring, a relaxation of the concept of an ASBG-colouring, and present a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for when a graph admits a difference-1 colouring. The relationship between distinct difference-1 colourings of a particular graph is characterised, and some classes of graphs for which all difference-1 colourings are ASBG-colourings are identified. One key step is Theorem 3.4.6, which generalises Hall's Matching Theorem by describing a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a subgraph $H$ of a bipartite graph in which each vertex $v$ of $H$ has some prescribed degree $r(v)$.

Chains with Small Intervals in the Lattice of Binary Paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
We call an interval $[x,y]$ in a poset {\em small} if $y$ is the join of some elements covering $x$. In this paper, we study the chains of paths from a given arbitrary (binary) path $P$ to the maximum path having only small intervals. More precisely, we obtain and use several formulas for the enumeration of chains having only small intervals and minimal length. For this, we introduce and study the notions of filling and degree of a path, giving in addition some related statistics.

Minimum-cost integer circulations in given homology classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $D$ be a directed graph cellularly embedded in a surface together with non-negative cost on its arcs. Given any integer circulation in $D$, we study the problem of finding a minimum-cost non-negative integer circulation in $D$ that is homologous over the integers to the given circulation. A special case of this problem arises in recent work on the stable set problem for graphs with bounded odd cycle packing number, in which the surface is non-orientable (Conforti et al., SODA'20). For orientable surfaces, polynomial-time algorithms have been obtained for different variants of this problem. We complement these results by showing that the convex hull of feasible solutions has a very simple polyhedral description. In contrast, only little seems to be known about the case of non-orientable surfaces. We show that the problem is strongly NP-hard for general non-orientable surfaces, and give the first polynomial-time algorithm for surfaces of fixed genus. For the latter, we provide a characterization of homology (over the integers) that allows us to recast the problem as a special integer program, which can be efficiently solved using proximity results and dynamic programming.

Dynamic list coloring of 1-planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is $k$-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that each edge is crossed at most $k$ times. Typically, the class of 1-planar graphs is among the most investigated graph families within the so-called "beyond planar graphs". A dynamic $\ell$-list coloring of a graph is a proper coloring so that each vertex receives a color from a list of $\ell$ distinct candidate colors assigned to it, and meanwhile, there are at least two colors appearing in the neighborhood of every vertex of degree at least two. In this paper, we prove that each 1-planar graph has a dynamic $11$-list coloring. Moreover, we show a relationship between the dynamic coloring of 1-planar graphs and the proper coloring of 2-planar graphs, which states that the dynamic (list) chromatic number of the class of 1-planar graphs is at least the (list) chromatic number of the class of 2-planar graphs.

On the central limit theorem for the two-sided descent statistics in Coxeter groups
In 2018, Kahle and Stump raised the following problem: identify sequences of finite Coxeter groups $W_n$ for which the two-sided descent statistics on a uniform random element of $W_n$ is asymptotically normal. Recently, Brück and Röttger provided an almost-complete answer, assuming some regularity condition on the sequence $W_n$. In this note, we provide a shorter proof of their result, which does not require any regularity condition. The main new proof ingredient is the use of the second Wasserstein distance on probability distributions, based on the work of Mallows (1972).

On Combinatorial Models for Affine Crystals
We biject two combinatorial models for tensor products of (single-column) Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals of any classical type $A-D$: the quantum alcove model and the tableau model. This allows us to translate calculations in the former model (of the energy function, the combinatorial $R$-matrix, etc.) to the latter, which is simpler.

Estimation of the distance between two bodies inside an $n$-dimensional ball of unit volume
Published in Mat. Zametki, 2020, Volume 107, Issue 6, Pages 888-893 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of estimating the distance between two bodies of volume $\varepsilon$ located inside a $n$-dimensional ball $U$ of unit volume for $n\to\infty$. Let $A$ be a closed set with a smooth boundary of the volume $\varepsilon$ ($0 \leq \varepsilon \leq 1/2$) inside a $n$-dimensional ball $U$ of unit volume that implements among all the sets of volume $\varepsilon$ is a set with the smallest possible free surface area, lying in one half-space with respect to a certain hyperplane that passes through the center of the ball. Then $A$ has the same free surface area as the set representing the intersection of a ball perpendicular to $U$ and the ball $U$ itself.

Subalgebras generated in degree two with minimal Hilbert function
Published in Mathematica Scandinavica. Vol. 127, No. 1 (2021) p. 5-27 • View Publication • BIB
What can be said about the subalgebras of the polynomial ring, with minimal or maximal Hilbert function? This question was discussed in a recent paper by M. Boij and A. Conca. In this paper we study the subalgebras generated in degree two with minimal Hilbert function. The problem to determine the generators of these algebras transfers into a combinatorial problem on counting maximal north-east lattice paths inside a shifted Ferrers diagram. We conjecture that the subalgebras generated in degree two with minimal Hilbert function are generated by an initial Lex or RevLex segment.

On the multiplicities of digraph eigenvalues
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show various upper bounds for the order of a digraph (or a mixed graph) whose Hermitian adjacency matrix has an eigenspace of prescribed codimension. In particular, this generalizes the so-called absolute bound for (simple) graphs first shown by Delsarte, Goethals, and Seidel (1977) and extended by Bell and Rowlinson (2003). In doing so, we also adapt the Blokhuis' theory (1983) of harmonic analysis in real hyperbolic spaces to that in complex hyperbolic spaces.
Polyhedral study of the Convex Recoloring problem
A coloring of the vertices of a connected graph is convex if each color class induces a connected subgraph. We address the convex recoloring (CR) problem defined as follows. Given a graph $G$ and a coloring of its vertices, recolor a minimum number of vertices of $G$ so that the resulting coloring is convex. This problem, known to be NP-hard even on paths, was firstly motivated by applications on perfect phylogenies. In this work, we study CR on general graphs from a polyhedral point of view. First, we introduce a full-dimensional polytope based on the idea of connected subgraphs, and present a class of valid inequalities with righthand side one that comprises all facet-defining inequalities with binary coefficients when the input graph is a tree. Moreover, we define a general class of inequalities with righthand side in $\{1, \ldots, k\}$, where $k$ is the amount of colors used in the initial coloring, and show sufficient conditions for validity and facetness of such inequalities. Finally, we report on computational experiments for an application on mobile networks that can be modeled by the polytope of CR on paths. We evaluate the potential of the proposed inequalities to reduce the integrality gaps.

A bound for the distinguishing index of regular graphs
Published in Europ. J. Combin. 84 (2020) 103145 • View Publication • BIB
An edge-colouring of a graph is distinguishing, if the only automorphism which preserves the colouring is the identity. It has been conjectured that all but finitely many connected, finite, regular graphs admit a distinguishing edge-colouring with two colours. We show that all such graphs except $K_2$ admit a distinguishing edge-colouring with three colours. This result also extends to infinite, locally finite graphs. Furthermore, we are able to show that there are arbitrary large infinite cardinals $κ$ such that every connected $κ$-regular graph has distinguishing edge-colouring with two colours.
The equivariant Ehrhart theory of the permutahedron

Separable elements and splittings of Weyl groups
Published in Adv. Math. 374 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
We continue the study of separable elements in finite Weyl groups. These elements generalize the well-studied class of separable permutations. We show that the multiplication map $W/U \times U \to W$ is a length-additive bijection, or splitting, of the Weyl group $W$ when $U$ is an order ideal in right weak order generated by a separable element; this generalizes a result for the symmetric group, answering an open problem of Wei. For a generalized quotient of the symmetric group, we show that this multiplication map is a bijection if and only if $U$ is an order ideal in right weak order generated by a separable element, thereby classifying those generalized quotients which induce splittings of the symmetric group, resolving a problem of Björner and Wachs from 1988. We also prove that this map is always surjective when $U$ is an order ideal in right weak order. Interpreting these sets of permutations as linear extensions of 2-dimensional posets gives the first direct combinatorial proof of an inequality due originally to Sidorenko in 1991, answering an open problem Morales, Pak, and Panova. We also prove a new $q$-analog of Sidorenko's formula. All of these results are conjectured to extend to arbitrary finite Weyl groups. Finally, we show that separable elements in $W$ are in bijection with the faces of all dimensions of several copies of the graph associahedron of the Dynkin diagram of $W$. This correspondence associates to each separable element $w$ a certain nested set; we give product formulas for the rank generating functions of the principal upper and lower order ideals generated by $w$ in terms of these nested sets, generalizing several known formulas.

Upper bound for the number of closed and privileged words
Published • View Publication • BIB
A non-empty word $w$ is a border of the word $u$ if $\vert w\vert<\vert u\vert$ and $w$ is both a prefix and a suffix of $u$. A word $u$ with the border $w$ is closed if $u$ has exactly two occurrences of $w$. A word $u$ is privileged if $\vert u\vert\leq 1$ or if $u$ contains a privileged border $w$ that appears exactly twice in $u$. Peltomäki (2016) presented the following open problem: "Give a nontrivial upper bound for $B(n)$", where $B(n)$ denotes the number of privileged words of length $n$. Let $D(n)$ denote the number of closed words of length $n$. Let $q>1$ be the size of the alphabet. We show that there is a positive real constant $c$ such that \[D(n)\leq c\ln{n}\frac{q^{n}}{\sqrt{n}}\mbox{, where }n>1\mbox{.}\] Privileged words are a subset of closed words, hence we show also an upper bound for the number of privileged words.

All $2$-transitive groups have the EKR-module property
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that every 2-transitive group has a property called the EKR-module property. This property gives a characterization of the maximum intersecting sets of permutations in the group. Specifically, the characteristic vector of any maximum intersecting set in a 2-transitive group is the linear combination of the characteristic vectors of the stabilizers of a points and their cosets. We also consider when the derangement graph of a 2-transitive group is connected and when a maximum intersecting set is a subgroup or a coset of a subgroup.

Wheels in planar graphs and Hajós graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
It was conjectured by Hajós that graphs containing no $K_5$-subdivision are 4-colorable. Previous results show that any possible minimum counterexample to Hajós' conjecture, called Hajós graph, is 4-connected but not 5-connected. In this paper, we show that if a Hajós graph admits a 4-cut or 5-cut with a planar side then the planar side must be small or contains a special wheel. This is a step in our effort to reduce Hajós' conjecture to the Four Color Theorem.

List colouring of two matroids through reduction to partition matroids
In the list coloring problem for two matroids, we are given matroids $M_1=(S,{\cal I}_1)$ and $M_2=(S,{\cal I}_2)$ on the same ground set $S$, and the goal is to determine the smallest number $k$ such that given arbitrary lists $L_s$ of $k$ colors for $s\in S$, it is possible to choose a color from each list so that every monochromatic set is independent in both $M_1$ and $M_2$. When both $M_1$ and $M_2$ are partition matroids, Galvin's list coloring theorem for bipartite graphs gives the answer. One of the main open questions is to decide if there exists a constant $c$ such that if the coloring number is $k$ (i.e., the ground set can be partitioned into $k$ common independent sets), then the list coloring number is at most $c\cdot k$. We consider matroid classes that appear naturally in combinatorial optimization problems, namely graphic matroids, paving matroids and gammoids. We show that if both matroids are from these fundamental classes, then the list coloring number is at most twice the coloring number. The proof is based on a new approach that reduces a matroid to a partition matroid without increasing its coloring number too much, and might be of independent combinatorial interest. In particular, we show that if $M=(S,{\cal I})$ is a matroid in which $S$ can be partitioned into $k$ independent sets, then there exists a partition matroid $N=(S,{\cal J})$ with ${\cal J}\subseteq{\cal I}$ in which $S$ can be partitioned into (A) $k$ independent sets if $M$ is a transversal matroid, (B) $2k-1$ independent sets if $M$ is a graphic matroid, (C) $\lceil kr/(r-1)\rceil$ independent sets if $M$ is a paving matroid of rank $r$, and (D) $2k-2$ independent sets if $M$ is a gammoid. We extend our results by showing that the existence of a matroid $N$ with $χ(N)\leq 2χ(M)$ implies the existence of a matroid $N'$ with $χ(N')\leq 2χ(M')$ for every truncation $M'$ of $M$.

A relaxed version of Šoltés's problem and cactus graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The \emph{Wiener index} is one of the most widely studied parameters in chemical graph theory. It is defined as the sum of the lengths of the shortest paths between all unordered pairs of vertices in a given graph. In 1991, Šoltés posed the following problem regarding the Wiener index: Find all graphs such that its Wiener index is preserved upon removal of any vertex. The problem is far from being solved and to this day, only one graph with such property is known: the cycle graph on 11 vertices. In this paper, we solve a relaxed version of the problem, proposed by Knor et al.\ in 2018. For a given $k$, the problem is to find (infinitely many) graphs having exactly $k$ vertices such that the Wiener index remains the same after removing any of them. We call these vertices \emph{good} vertices and we show that there are infinitely many cactus graphs with exactly $k$ cycles of length at least 7 that contain exactly $2k$ good vertices and infinitely many cactus graphs with exactly $k$ cycles of length $c \in \{5,6\}$ that contain exactly $k$ good vertices. On the other hand, we prove that $G$ has no good vertex if the length of the longest cycle in $G$ is at most $4$.
