On $q$-poly-Bernoulli numbers arising from combinatorial interpretations
In this paper we present several natural $q$-analogues of the poly-Bernoulli numbers arising in combinatorial contexts. We also recall some relating analytical results and ask for combinatorial interpretations.
On well-dominated graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is \emph{well-dominated} if all of its minimal dominating sets have the same cardinality. We prove that at least one of the factors is well-dominated if the Cartesian product of two graphs is well-dominated. In addition, we show that the Cartesian product of two connected, triangle-free graphs is well-dominated if and only if both graphs are complete graphs of order $2$. Under the assumption that at least one of the connected graphs $G$ or $H$ has no isolatable vertices, we prove that the direct product of $G$ and $H$ is well-dominated if and only if either $G=H=K_3$ or $G=K_2$ and $H$ is either the $4$-cycle or the corona of a connected graph. Furthermore, we show that the disjunctive product of two connected graphs is well-dominated if and only if one of the factors is a complete graph and the other factor has domination number at most $2$.

A new sieve for restricted multiset counting
Published in Discrete Mathematics 344, no. 8 (2021): 112487 • View Publication • BIB
The Li--Wan sieve is extended to multisets when the underlying set is symmetric. The main ingredient of the proof is the Mobius inversion formula on the poset of partitions of $\{1,2,\dots,k\}$ ordered by refinement. As illustrative applications, we investigate the problems of partitions over finite fields and zero-sum multisets over the additive group $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$. .

Congruences for Generalized Frobenius Partitions of Nonzero Row Difference
We extend George Andrew's general principle for counting generalized Frobenius partitions to include arrays with nonzero row difference and establish some congruences for these arrays.

Planar algebra presentations of $\text{URep}_{\mathbb{C}}(\mathbb{C}^+)$ and $\text{URep}_{\mathbb{F}_p}(\mathbb{F}_p^+)$
We give presentations of the planar algebra of unipotent representations of the groups $\mathbb{C}$ and $\mathbb{F}_p$ under addition using jellyfish and light leaf style arguments. These are some of the most natural examples of non-semisimple planar algebras. For the characteristic $p$ family of examples, a new generator appears in arbitrarily large box spaces as $p$ increases. We point toward future directions in getting results on first and second fundamental theorems for rings of vector invariants, as well as generalization of the examples given.

Large and moderate deviations for record numbers in some non-nearest neighbor random walks
Published in Electronic Communications in Probability, Vol. 27, No. 57, pp. 1-13 (2022) • View Publication • BIB
The deviation principles of record numbers in random walk models have not been completely investigated, especially for the non-nearest neighbor cases. In this paper, we derive the asymptotic probabilities of large and moderate deviations for the number of "weak records"(or "ladder points") in two kinds of one-dimensional non-nearest neighbor random walks. The proofs depend only on the direct analysis of random walks. We illustrate that the traditional method of analyzing the local time of Brownian motions, which is often adopted for the simple random walks, would lead to wrong conjectures for our cases.

Locally finite sublattices of free lattices
Published in Australas. J. Combin. 78(1), 114 - 117 (2020) • Search Publication
The problem of determining which infinite lattices are (isomorphic to) sublattices of free lattices is in general unsolved and extremely difficult. In this note, we reduce the problem by proving that all locally finite sublattices of free lattices are countable by using a result from Baldwin, Berman, Glass and Hodges on free algebras.

Monochromatic Equilateral Triangles in the Unit Distance Graph
Published in Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society 52, no. 4, 687-692, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
Let $χ_Δ(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ denote the minimum number of colors needed to color $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ so that there will not be a monochromatic equilateral triangle with side length $1$. Using the slice rank method, we reprove a result of Frankl and Rodl, and show that $χ_Δ\left(\mathbb{R}^{n}\right)$ grows exponentially with $n$. This technique substantially improves upon the best known quantitative lower bounds for $χ_Δ\left(\mathbb{R}^{n}\right)$, and we obtain \[ χ_Δ\left(\mathbb{R}^{n}\right)>(1.01446+o(1))^{n}. \]
An algorithm and new bounds for the circular flow number of snarks
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is well-known that the circular flow number of a bridgeless cubic graph can be computed in terms of certain partitions of its vertex-set with prescribed properties. In the present paper, we first study some of these properties that turn out to be useful in order to design a more efficient algorithm for the computation of the circular flow number of a bridgeless cubic graph. Using this algorithm, we determine the circular flow number of all snarks up to 36 vertices as well as the circular flow number of various famous snarks. After that, as combination of the use of our algorithm with new theoretical results, we present an infinite family of snarks of order $8k+2$ whose circular flow numbers meet a general lower bound presented by Lukot'ka and Skoviera in 2008. In particular, this answers a question proposed in their paper. Moreover, we improve the best known upper bound for the circular flow number of Goldberg snarks and we conjecture that this new upper bound is optimal. Finally, we discuss a possible extension to the computation of the circular flow number in the non-regular case.

Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids under deletion
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 27 (2020), no. 1, Paper No. 1.17 • View Publication • BIB
We present a formula which relates the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid $M$, as defined by Elias, Proudfoot and Wakefield, to the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of the matroid obtained by deleting an element, and various contractions and localizations of $M$. We give a number of applications of our formula to Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of graphic matroids, including a simple formula for the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of a parallel connection graph.

Exceptional autonomous components of Goldbach factorization graphs
We introduce a concept of a Goldbach factorization graph (GFG) $F_n$, which can be constructed for each even integer $n$ greater than 2. We prove that, if $n$ does not satisfy the binary Goldbach conjecture (BGC), then $F_n$ contains a special source strongly connected component (exceptional autonomous component, EAC). We analyse existence and properties of EACs using deductive and computational approaches. In particular, we prove that there exists exactly one EAC induced by two vertices. Using computer-aided search, we show that for $n \leq 10^8$ there are 6 EACs, each inside a different GFG, and they are located at the relative beginning of the checked range, namely, for $n\in\{128,1718,1862,1928,2200,6142\}$. Using classic graph algorithms, the constraint programming method, and metaheuristic approaches, we have prepared a repository of drawings and some selected properties of the found EACs and GFGs which contain them. The concept of EAC relates to the BGC, but more generally, it represents interesting self-conjugation of prime numbers under a relation which combines addition and multiplication.
Optimal Learning of Joint Alignments with a Faulty Oracle
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the following problem, which is useful in applications such as joint image and shape alignment. The goal is to recover $n$ discrete variables $g_i \in \{0, \ldots, k-1\}$ (up to some global offset) given noisy observations of a set of their pairwise differences $\{(g_i - g_j) \bmod k\}$; specifically, with probability $\frac{1}{k}+δ$ for some $δ> 0$ one obtains the correct answer, and with the remaining probability one obtains a uniformly random incorrect answer. We consider a learning-based formulation where one can perform a query to observe a pairwise difference, and the goal is to perform as few queries as possible while obtaining the exact joint alignment. We provide an easy-to-implement, time efficient algorithm that performs $O\big(\frac{n \lg n}{k δ^2}\big)$ queries, and recovers the joint alignment with high probability. We also show that our algorithm is optimal by proving a general lower bound that holds for all non-adaptive algorithms. Our work improves significantly recent work by Chen and Candés \cite{chen2016projected}, who view the problem as a constrained principal components analysis problem that can be solved using the power method. Specifically, our approach is simpler both in the algorithm and the analysis, and provides additional insights into the problem structure.

Polynomial relations between operators on chains of representation rings
Published in Communications in Algebra, 2022 • View Publication • BIB
Given a chain of groups $G_0 \le G_1 \le G_2 ... $, we may form the corresponding chain of their representation rings, together with induction and restriction operators. We may let $\textrm{Res}^l$ denote the operator which restricts down $l$ steps, and similarly for $\textrm{Ind}^l$. Observe then that $\textrm{Ind}^l \textrm{Res}^l$ is an operator from any particular representation ring to itself. The central question that this paper addresses is: "What happens if the $\textrm{Ind}^l \textrm{Res}^l$ operator is a polynomial in the $\textrm{Ind} \textrm{Res}$ operator?". We show that chains of wreath products $\{H^n \rtimes S_n\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ have this property, and in particular, the polynomials that appear in the case of symmetric groups are the falling factorial polynomials. An application of this fact gives a remarkable new way to compute characters of wreath products (in particular symmetric groups) using matrix multiplication. We then consider arbitrary chains of groups, and find very rigid constraints that such a chain must satisfy in order for $\textrm{Ind}^l \textrm{Res}^l$ to be a polynomial in $\textrm{Ind} \textrm{Res}$. Our rigid constraints justify the intuition that this property is indeed a very rare and special property.

Formations and generalized Davenport-Schinzel sequences
Let $up(r, t) = (a_1 a_2 \dots a_r)^t$. We investigate the problem of determining the maximum possible integer $n(r, t)$ for which there exist $2t-1$ permutations $π_1, π_2, \dots, π_{2t-1}$ of $1, 2, \dots, n(r, t)$ such that the concatenated sequence $π_1 π_2 \dots π_{2t-1}$ has no subsequence isomorphic to $up(r,t)$. This quantity has been used to obtain an upper bound on the maximum number of edges in $k$-quasiplanar graphs. It was proved by (Geneson, Prasad, and Tidor, Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2014) that $n(r, t) \le (r-1)^{2^{2t-2}}$. We prove that $n(r,t) = Θ(r^{2t-1 \choose t})$, where the constant in the bound depends only on $t$. Using our upper bound in the case $t = 2$, we also sharpen an upper bound of (Klazar, Integers, 2002), who proved that $Ex(up(r,2),n) < (2n+1)L$ where $L = Ex(up(r,2),K-1)+1$, $K = (r-1)^4 + 1$, and $Ex(u, n)$ denotes the extremal function for forbidden generalized Davenport-Schinzel sequences. We prove that $K = (r-1)^4 + 1$ in Klazar's bound can be replaced with $K = (r-1) \binom{r}{2}+1$. We also prove a conjecture from (Geneson, Prasad, and Tidor, Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2014) by showing for $t \geq 1$ that $Ex(a b c (a c b)^{t} a b c, n) = n 2^{\frac{1}{t!}α(n)^{t} \pm O(α(n)^{t-1})}$. In addition, we prove that $Ex(a b c a c b (a b c)^{t} a c b, n) = n 2^{\frac{1}{(t+1)!}α(n)^{t+1} \pm O(α(n)^{t})}$ for all $t \geq 1$.

Fibonacci, Motzkin, Schroder, Fuss-Catalan and other Combinatorial Structures: Universal and Embedded Bijections
A combinatorial structure, $\mathcal{F}$, with counting sequence $\{a_n\}_{n\ge 0}$ and ordinary generating function $G_\mathcal{F}=\sum_{n\ge0} a_n x^n$, is positive algebraic if $G_\mathcal{F}$ satisfies a polynomial equation $G_\mathcal{F}=\sum_{k=0}^N p_k(x)\,G_\mathcal{F}^k $ and $p_k(x)$ is a polynomial in $x$ with non-negative integer coefficients. We show that every such family is associated with a normed $\mathbf{n}$-magma. An $\mathbf{n}$-magma with $\mathbf{n}=(n_1,\dots, n_k)$ is a pair $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{F}$ where $\mathcal{M}$ is a set of combinatorial structures and $\mathcal{F}$ is a tuple of $n_i$-ary maps $f_i\,:\,\mathcal{M}^{n_i}\to \mathcal{M}$. A norm is a super-additive size map $||\cdot||\,:\, \mathcal{M}\to \mathbb{N} $. If the normed $\mathbf{n}$-magma is free then we show there exists a recursive, norm preserving, universal bijection between all positive algebraic families $\mathcal{F}_i$ with the same counting sequence. A free $\mathbf{n}$-magma is defined using a universal mapping principle. We state a theorem which provides a combinatorial method of proving if a particular $\mathbf{n}$-magma is free. We illustrate this by defining several $\mathbf{n}$-magmas: eleven $(1,1)$-magmas (the Fibonacci families), seventeen $(1,2)$-magmas (nine Motzkin and eight Schröder families) and seven $(3)$-magmas (the Fuss-Catalan families). We prove they are all free and hence obtain a universal bijection for each $\mathbf{n}$. We also show how the $\mathbf{n}$-magma structure manifests as an embedded bijection.

Multi-Macdonald polynomials
We introduce Macdonald polynomials indexed by $n$-tuples of partitions and characterized by certain orthogonality and triangularity relations. We prove that they can be explicitly given as products of ordinary Macdonald polynomials depending on special alphabets. With this factorization in hand, we establish their most basic properties, such as explicit formulas for their norm-squared, evaluation and reproducing kernel. Moreover, we show that the $q,t$-Kostka coefficients associated to the multi-Macdonald polynomials are positive and correspond to $q,t$-analogs of the dimensions of the irreducible representations of $C_n \sim S_d$, the wreath product of the cyclic group $C_n$ with the symmetric group.

Minimum size generating partitions and their application to demand fulfillment optimization problems
For $n$ and $k$ integers we introduce the notion of some partition of $n$ being able to generate another partition of $n$. We solve the problem of finding the minimum size partition for which the set of partitions this partition can generate contains all size-$k$ partitions of $n$. We describe how this result can be applied to solving a class of combinatorial optimization problems.
Linear-Time Recognition of Double-Threshold Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G = (V,E)$ is a double-threshold graph if there exist a vertex-weight function $w \colon V \to \mathbb{R}$ and two real numbers $\mathtt{lb}, \mathtt{ub} \in \mathbb{R}$ such that $uv \in E$ if and only if $\mathtt{lb} \le \mathtt{w}(u) + \mathtt{w}(v) \le \mathtt{ub}$. In the literature, those graphs are studied also as the pairwise compatibility graphs that have stars as their underlying trees. We give a new characterization of double-threshold graphs that relates them to bipartite permutation graphs. Using the new characterization, we present a linear-time algorithm for recognizing double-threshold graphs. Prior to our work, the fastest known algorithm by Xiao and Nagamochi [Algorithmica 2020] ran in $O(n^{3} m)$ time, where $n$ and $m$ are the numbers of vertices and edges, respectively.

On realizability of lines on tropical cubic surfaces and the Brundu-Logar normal form
We present results on the relative realizability of infinite families of lines on general smooth tropical cubic surfaces. Inspired by the problem of relative realizability of lines on surfaces, we investigate the information we can derive tropically from the Brundu-Logar normal form of smooth cubic surfaces. In particular, we prove that for a residue field of characteristic $\neq 2$ the tropicalization of the Brundu-Logar normal form is not smooth. We also take first steps in investigating the behavior of the tropicalized lines.
