Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime and let $n$ be a natural number. In this article we describe the irreducible constituents of the induced characters $φ\big\uparrow^{\mathfrak{S}_n}$ for arbitrary linear characters $φ$ of a Sylow $p$-subgroup of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, generalising earlier results of the authors. By doing so, we introduce Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups.

Representing split graphs by words
Published • View Publication • BIB
There is a long line of research in the literature dedicated to word-representable graphs, which generalize several important classes of graphs. However, not much is known about word-representability of split graphs, another important class of graphs. In this paper, we show that threshold graphs, a subclass of split graphs, are word-representable. Further, we prove a number of general theorems on word-representable split graphs, and use them to characterize computationally such graphs with cliques of size 5 in terms of 9 forbidden subgraphs, thus extending the known characterization for word-representable split graphs with cliques of size 4. Moreover, we use split graphs, and also provide an alternative solution, to show that gluing two word-representable graphs in any clique of size at least 2 may, or may not, result in a word-representable graph. The two surprisingly simple solutions provided by us answer a question that was open for about ten years.

Keys and Demazure crystals for Kac-Moody algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Key map is an important tool in the determination of the Demazure crystals associated to Kac-Moody algebras. In finite type A, it can be computed in the tableau realization of crystals by a simple combinatorial procedure due to Lascoux and Sch{ü}tzenberger. We show that this procedure is a part of a more general construction holding in the Kac-Moody case that we illustrate in finite types and affine type A. In affine type A, we introduce higher level generalizations of core partitions which notably give interesting analogues of the Young lattice and are expected to parametrize distinguished elements of certain remarkable blocks for Ariki-Koike algebras.

Connected Baranyai's Theorem
Published in Combinatorica Volume 34, Issue 2, 129-138, 2014 • View Publication • BIB
Let $K_n^h=(V,\binom{V}{h})$ be the complete $h$-uniform hypergraph on vertex set $V$ with $|V|=n$. Baranyai showed that $K_n^h$ can be expressed as the union of edge-disjoint $r$-regular factors if and only if $h$ divides $rn$ and $r$ divides $\binom{n-1}{h-1}$. Using a new proof technique, in this paper we prove that $λK_n^h$ can be expressed as the union $\mathcal G_1\cup \ldots \cup\mathcal G_k$ of $k$ edge-disjoint factors, where for $1\leq i\leq k$, $\mathcal G_i$ is $r_i$-regular, if and only if (i) $h$ divides $r_in$ for $1\leq i\leq k$, and (ii) $\sum_{i=1}^k r_i=λ\binom{n-1}{h-1}$. Moreover, for any $i$ ($1\leq i\leq k$) for which $r_i\geq 2$, this new technique allows us to guarantee that $\mathcal G_i$ is connected, generalizing Baranyai's theorem, and answering a question by Katona.

Decomposing complete equipartite multigraphs into cycles of variable lengths: the amalgamation-detachment approach
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Designs, Volume 24, Issue 4, 165-183, 2016 • View Publication • BIB
Using the technique of amalgamation-detachment, we show that the complete equipartite multigraph $λK_{n\times m}$ can be decomposed into cycles of lengths $c_1m,\dots,c_km$ (plus a 1-factor if the degree is odd) whenever there exists a decomposition of $λm K_n$ into cycles of lengths $c_1, \dots,c_k$ (plus a 1-factor if the degree is odd). In addition, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of some other, related cycle decompositions of the complete equipartite multigraph $λK_{n\times m}$.

Birational and noncommutative lifts of antichain toggling and rowmotion
Published • View Publication • BIB
The rowmotion action on order ideals or on antichains of a finite partially ordered set has been studied (under a variety of names) by many authors. Depending on the poset, one finds unexpectedly interesting orbit structures, instances of (small order) periodicity, cyclic sieving, and homomesy. Many of these nice features still hold when the action is extended to $[0,1]$-labelings of the poset or (via detropicalization) to labelings by rational functions (the birational setting). In this work, we parallel the birational lifting already done for order-ideal rowmotion to antichain rowmotion. We give explicit equivariant bijections between the birational toggle groups and between their respective liftings. We further extend all of these notions to labellings by noncommutative rational functions, setting an unpublished periodicity conjecture of Grinberg in a broader context.

A new kind of Hermitian matrices for digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In an earlier work, the author together with Guo [Hermitian adjacency matrix of digraphs and mixed graphs, J. Graph Theory 85 (2017) 217-248] introduced the Hermitian adjacency matrix of directed (and partially directed) graphs. However, it appears that a more natural Hermitian matrix exists, and it is the purpose of this note to bring this new Hermitian matrix to the attention of researchers in algebraic graph theory.

On the tails of FI-modules
We study the end-behavior of integer-valued FI-modules. Our first result describes the high degrees of an FI-module in terms of newly defined tail invariants. Our main result provides an equivalence of categories between FI-tails and finitely supported modules for a new category that we call FJ. Objects of FJ are natural numbers, and morphisms are infinite series with summands drawn from certain modules of Lie brackets.
Crescent configurations in normed spaces
We study the problem of crescent configurations, posed by Erdős in 1989. A crescent configuration is a set of $n$ points in the plane such that: 1) no three points lie on a common line, 2) no four points lie on a common circle, 3) for each $1 \leq i \leq n - 1$, there exists a distance which occurs exactly $i$ times. Constructions of sizes $n \leq 8$ have been provided by Liu, Palásti, and Pomerance. Erdős conjectured that there exists some $N$ for which there do not exist crescent configurations of size $n$ for all $n \geq N$. We extend the problem of crescent configurations to general normed spaces $(\mathbb{R}^2, \| \cdot \|)$ by studying strong crescent configurations in $\| \cdot \|$. In an arbitrary norm $\|\cdot \|$, we construct a strong crescent configuration of size 4. We also construct larger strong crescent configurations in the Euclidean, taxicab, and Chebyshev norms, of sizes $n \leq 6$, $n \leq 8$, and $n \leq 8$ respectively. When defining strong crescent configurations, we introduce the notion of line-like configurations in $\|\cdot \|$. A line-like configuration in $\|\cdot \|$ is a set of points whose distance graph is isomorphic to the distance graph of equally spaced points on a line. In a broad class of norms, we construct line-like configurations of arbitrary size. Our main result is a crescent-type result about line-like configurations in the Chebyshev norm. A line-like crescent configuration is a line-like configuration for which no three points lie on a common line and no four points lie on a common $\|\cdot \|$ circle. We prove that for $n \geq 7$, every line-like crescent configuration of size $n$ in the Chebyshev norm must have a rigid structure. Specifically, it must be a perpendicular perturbation of equally spaced points on a horizontal or vertical line.

Bounds on Rudin-Shapiro polynomials of arbitrary degree
Let $P_{<n}(z)$ be the Rudin-Shapiro polynomial of degree $n-1$. We show that $|P_{<n}(z)|\le \sqrt{6n-2}-1$ for all $n\ge0$ and $|z|=1$, confirming a longstanding conjecture. This bound is sharp in the case when $n=(2\cdot 4^k+1)/3$ and $z=1$. We also show that for $n\ge m\ge0$, $|P_{<n}(z)-P_{<m}(z)|\le \sqrt{10(n-m)}$, which is asymptotically sharp in the sense that for any $\varepsilon>0$ there exists $n>m\ge0$ and $z$ with $|z|=1$ and $|P_{<n}(z)-P_{<m}(z)|\ge\sqrt{(10-\varepsilon)(n-m)}$, contradicting a conjecture of Montgomery.

The Newton polytope of the discriminant of a quaternary cubic form
We determine the $166\,104$ extremal monomials of the discriminant of a quaternary cubic form. These are in bijection with $D$-equivalence classes of regular triangulations of the $3$-dilated tetrahedron. We describe how to compute these triangulations and their $D$-equivalence classes in order to arrive at our main result. The computation poses several challenges, such as dealing with the sheer amount of triangulations effectively, as well as devising a suitably fast algorithm for computation of a $D$-equivalence class.

Free (tri)dendriform family algebras
Published in Journal of Algebra, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we first prove that a Rota-Baxter family algebra indexed by a semigroup induces an ordinary Rota-Baxter algebra structure on the tensor product with the semigroup algebra. We show that the same phenomenon arises for dendriform and tridendriform family algebras. Then we construct free dendriform family algebras in terms of typed decorated planar binary trees. Finally, we generalize typed decorated rooted trees to typed valently decorated Schröder trees and use them to construct free tridendriform family algebras.

Two congruences concerning Apéry numbers
Published in Electron. Res. Arch. 28 (2020), 1063-1075 • View Publication • BIB
Let $n$ be a nonnegative integer. The $n$-th Apéry number is defined by $$ A_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{n+k}{k}^2\binom{n}{k}^2. $$ Z.-W. Sun ever investigated the congruence properties of Apéry numbers and posed some conjectures. For example, Sun conjectured that for any prime $p\geq7$ $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)A_k\equiv p-\frac{7}{2}p^2H_{p-1}\pmod{p^6} $$ and for any prime $p\geq5$ $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)^3A_k\equiv p^3+4p^4H_{p-1}+\frac{6}{5}p^8B_{p-5}\pmod{p^9}, $$ where $H_n=\sum_{k=1}^n1/k$ denotes the $n$-th harmonic number and $B_0,B_1,\ldots$ are the well-known Bernoulli numbers. In this paper we shall confirm these two conjectures.

Classification of Open and Closed Convex Codes on Five Neurons
Published • View Publication • BIB
Neural codes, represented as collections of binary strings, encode neural activity and show relationships among stimuli. Certain neurons, called place cells, have been shown experimentally to fire in convex regions in space. A natural question to ask is: Which neural codes can arise as intersection patterns of convex sets? While past research has established several criteria, complete conditions for convexity are not yet known for codes with more than four neurons. We classify all neural codes with five neurons as convex/non-convex codes. Furthermore, we investigate which of these codes can be represented by open versus closed convex sets. Interestingly, we find a code which is an open but not closed convex code and demonstrate a minimal example for this phenomenon.
Trees of tangles in abstract separation systems
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, Volume 180, May 2021, 105425 • View Publication • BIB
We prove canonical and non-canonical tree-of-tangles theorems for abstract separation systems that are merely structurally submodular. Our results imply all known tree-of-tangles theorems for graphs, matroids and abstract separation systems with submodular order functions, with greatly simplified and shortened proofs.

A Characterization of Circle Graphs in Terms of Total Unimodularity
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ has an associated multimatroid $\mathcal{Z}_3(G)$, which is equivalent to the isotropic system of $G$ studied by Bouchet. In previous work it was shown that $G$ is a circle graph if and only if for every field $\mathbb F$, the rank function of $\mathcal{Z}_3(G)$ can be extended to the rank function of an $\mathbb F$-representable matroid. In the present paper we strengthen this result using a multimatroid analogue of total unimodularity. As a consequence we obtain a characterization of matroid planarity in terms of this total-unimodularity analogue.

Quasi-vertex-transitive Maps on the Plane
Published in Discrete Math. 343 (2020), no. 7 • View Publication • BIB
Quasi-vertex-transitive maps are the homogeneous maps on the plane with finitely many vertex orbits under the action of their automorphism groups. We show that there exist quasi-vertex-transitive maps of types $[p^3, 3]$ for $p \equiv 1$ (mod $6$), but there doesn't exist vertex-transitive map of such types. In particular, we determine the surface with the lowest possible genus that admit a polyhedral map of type $[5^3, 3]$.

A note on minimal art galleries
We will consider some extensions of the polygonal art gallery problem. In a recent paper Morrison has shown the smallest (9 sides) example of an art gallery that cannot be observed by guards placed in every third corner. Author also mentioned two related problems, for which the minimal examples are not known. We will show that a polygonal fortress such that its exterior cannot be guarded by sentries placed in every second vertex has at least 12 sides. Also, we will show an example of three-dimensional polyhedron such that its inside cannot be covered by placing guard in every vertex which has both fewer vertices and faces than previously known.

New results relating independence and matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study relationships between the \emph{matching number}, written $μ(G)$, and the \emph{independence number}, written $α(G)$. Our first main result is to show \[ α(G) \le μ(G) + |X| - μ(G[N_G[X]]), \] where $X$ is \emph{any} intersection of maximum independent sets in $G$. Our second main result is to show \[ δ(G)α(G) \le Δ(G)μ(G), \] where $δ(G)$ and $Δ(G)$ denote the minimum and maximum vertex degrees of $G$, respectively. These results improve on and generalize known relations between $μ(G)$ and $α(G)$. Further, we also give examples showing these improvements.
Block-avoiding point sequencings of Mendelsohn triple systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
A cyclic ordering of the points in a Mendelsohn triple system of order $v$ (or MTS$(v)$) is called a sequencing. A sequencing $D$ is $\ell$-good if there does not exist a triple $(x,y,z)$ in the MTS$(v)$ such that (1) the three points $x,y,$ and $z$ occur (cyclically) in that order in $D$; and (2) $\{x,y,z\}$ is a subset of $\ell$ cyclically consecutive points of $D$. In this paper, we prove some upper bounds on $\ell$ for MTS$(v)$ having $\ell$-good sequencings and we prove that any MTS$(v)$ with $v \geq 7$ has a $3$-good sequencing. We also determine the optimal sequencings of every MTS$(v)$ with $v \leq 10$.
