Uniform random posets
We propose a simple algorithm generating labelled posets of given size according to the almost uniform distribution. By "almost uniform" we understand that the distribution of generated posets converges in total variation to the uniform distribution. Our method is based on a Markov chain generating directed acyclic graphs.
Zeros of the Möbius function of permutations
Published in Mathematika 65 (2019) 1074-1092 • View Publication • BIB
We show that if a permutation $π$ contains two intervals of length 2, where one interval is an ascent and the other a descent, then the Möbius function $μ[π]$ of the interval $[1,π]$ is zero. As a consequence, we show that the proportion of permutations of length $n$ with principal Möbius function equal to zero is asymptotically bounded below by $(1-1/e)^2\ge 0.3995$. This is the first result determining the value of $μ[1,π]$ for an asymptotically positive proportion of permutations $π$. We also show that if a permutation $φ$ can be expressed as a direct sum of the form $α\oplus 1 \oplus β$, then any permutation $π$ containing an interval order-isomorphic to $φ$ has $μ[1, π]=0$; we deduce this from a more general result showing that $μ[σ, π]=0$ whenever $π$ contains an interval of a certain form. Finally, we show that if a permutation $π$ contains intervals isomorphic to certain pairs of permutations, or to certain permutations of length six, then $μ[1, π] = 0$.

Open and closed factors of Arnoux-Rauzy words
Published • View Publication • BIB
A finite word $u$ is called closed if its longest repeated prefix has exactly two occurrences in $u,$ once as a prefix and once as a suffix. We study the function $f_x^c:\mathbb N \rightarrow \mathbb N$ which counts the number of closed factors of each length in an infinite word $x.$ We derive an explicit formula for $f_x^c$ in case $x$ is an Arnoux-Rauzy word. As a consequence we prove that $\liminf _{n\rightarrow \infty}f_x^c(n)=+\infty.$

On relative clique number of colored mixed graphs
An $(m, n)$-colored mixed graph is a graph having arcs of $m$ different colors and edges of $n$ different colors. A graph homomorphism of an $(m, n$)-colored mixed graph $G$ to an $(m, n)$-colored mixed graph $H$ is a vertex mapping such that if $uv$ is an arc (edge) of color $c$ in $G$, then $f(u)f(v)$ is also an arc (edge) of color $c$. The ($m, n)$-colored mixed chromatic number of an $(m, n)$-colored mixed graph $G$, introduced by Nešetřil and Raspaud [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 2000] is the order (number of vertices) of the smallest homomorphic image of $G$. Later Bensmail, Duffy and Sen [Graphs Combin. 2017] introduced another parameter related to the $(m, n)$-colored mixed chromatic number, namely, the $(m, n)$-relative clique number as the maximum cardinality of a vertex subset which, pairwise, must have distinct images with respect to any colored homomorphism. In this article, we study the $(m, n$)-relative clique number for the family of subcubic graphs, graphs with maximum degree $Δ$, planar graphs and triangle-free planar graphs and provide new improved bounds in each of the cases. In particular, for subcubic graphs we provide exact value of the parameter.

Cubillages on cyclic zonotopes, membranes, and higher separatation
We study certain structural properties of fine zonotopal tilings, or cubillages, on cyclic zonotopes $Z(n,d)$ of an arbitrary dimension $d$ and their relations to $(d-1)$-separated collections of subsets of a set $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. (Collections of this sort are well known as strongly separated ones when $d=2$, and as chord separated ones when $d=3$.)

Enumerative Gadget Phenomena for $(4,1)$-Adinkras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Adinkras are combinatorial objects developed to study supersymmetry representations. Gates et al. introduced the "gadget" as a function of pairs of adinkras, obtaining some mysterious results for $(n=4, k=1)$ adinkras with computer-aided computation. Specifically, very few values of the gadget actually appear, suggesting a great deal of symmetry in these objects. In this paper, we compute gadgets symbolically and explain some of these observed phenomena with group theory and combinatorics. Guided by this work, we give some suggestions for generalizations of the gadget to other values of the $n$ and $k$ parameters.

Chromatic Polynomials of Oriented Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The oriented chromatic polynomial of a oriented graph outputs the number of oriented $k$-colourings for any input $k$. We fully classify those oriented graphs for which the oriented graph has the same chromatic polynomial as the underlying simple graph, closing an open problem posed by Sopena. We find that such oriented graphs can be both identified and constructed in polynomial time as they are exactly the family of quasi-transitive oriented co-interval graphs. We study the analytic properties of this polynomial and show that there exist oriented graphs which have chromatic polynomials have roots, including negative real roots, that cannot be realized as the root of any chromatic polynomial of a simple graph.

Uniform Lipschitz functions on the triangular lattice have logarithmic variations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Uniform integer-valued Lipschitz functions on a domain of size $N$ of the triangular lattice are shown to have variations of order $\sqrt{\log N}$. The level lines of such functions form a loop $O(2)$ model on the edges of the hexagonal lattice with edge-weight one. An infinite-volume Gibbs measure for the loop O(2) model is constructed as a thermodynamic limit and is shown to be unique. It contains only finite loops and has properties indicative of scale-invariance: macroscopic loops appearing at every scale. The existence of the infinite-volume measure carries over to height functions pinned at the origin; the uniqueness of the Gibbs measure does not. The proof is based on a representation of the loop $O(2)$ model via a pair of spin configurations that are shown to satisfy the FKG inequality. We prove RSW-type estimates for a certain connectivity notion in the aforementioned spin model.

Non vanishing of theta functions and sets of small multiplicative energy
Let $χ$ range over the $(p-1)/2$ even Dirichlet characters modulo a prime $p$ and denote by $θ(x,χ)$ the associated theta series. The asymptotic behaviour of the second and fourth moments proved by Louboutin and the author implies that there exists at least $ \gg p/ \log p$ characters such that the associated theta function does not vanish at a fixed point. Constructing a suitable mollifier, we improve this result and show that there exists at least $ \gg p/ \sqrt{\log p}$ characters such that $θ(x,χ) \neq 0$ for any $x>0$. We give similar results for odd Dirichlet characters mod $p$.

The Kruskal-Katona Theorem for Graphs
In graph theory, knowing the number of complete subgraphs with r vertices that a graph g has, limits the number of its complete subgraphs with s vertices, for s > r. A useful upper bound is provided by the Kruskal-Katona theorem, but this bound is often not tight. In this note, we add to the known cases where this bound is tight and also investigate cases where it is not. Finally we look at a useful technique for actually finding the numbers of complete subgraphs of a graph.
D-chain tomography of networks: a new structure spectrum and an application to the SIR process
Published in SIAM J. Appl. Dyn. Syst., 18(4) (2019), pp. 2181-2201 • View Publication • BIB
The analysis of the dynamics on complex networks is closely connected to structural features of the networks. Features like, for instance, graph-cores and node degrees have been studied ubiquitously. Here we introduce the D-spectrum of a network, a novel new framework that is based on a collection of nested chains of subgraphs within the network. Graph-cores and node degrees are merely from two particular such chains of the D-spectrum. Each chain gives rise to a ranking of nodes and, for a fixed node, the collection of these ranks provides us with the D-spectrum of the node. Besides a node deletion algorithm, we discover a connection between the D-spectrum of a network and some fixed points of certain graph dynamical systems (MC systems) on the network. Using the D-spectrum we identify nodes of similar spreading power in the susceptible-infectious-recovered (SIR) model on a collection of real world networks as a quick application. We then discuss our results and conclude that D-spectra represent a meaningful augmentation of graph-cores and node degrees.

Topology of Z_3 equivariant Hilbert schemes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by work of Gusein-Zade, Luengo, and Melle-Hernández, we study a specific generating series of arm and leg statistics on partitions, which is known to compute the Poincaré polynomials of Z_3-equivariant Hilbert schemes of points in the plane, where Z_3 acts diagonally. This generating series has a conjectural product formula, a proof of which has remained elusive over the last ten years. We introduce a new combinatorial correspondence between partitions of n and {1,2}-compositions of n, which behaves well with respect to the statistic in question. As an application, we use this correspondence to compute the highest Betti numbers of the Z_3 equivariant Hilbert schemes.

Shell Tableaux: A set partition analogue of vacillating tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
Schur-Weyl duality is a fundamental framework in combinatorial representation theory. It intimately relates the irreducible representations of a group to the irreducible representations of its centralizer algebra. We investigate the analog of Schur-Weyl duality for the group of unipotent upper triangular matrices over a finite field. In this case, the character theory of these upper triangular matrices is "wild" or unattainable. Thus we employ a generalization, known as supercharacter theory, that creates a striking variation on the character theory of the symmetric group with combinatorics built from set partitions. In this paper, we present a combinatorial formula for calculating a restriction and induction of supercharacters based on statistics of set partitions and seashell inspired diagrams. We use these formulas to create a graph that encodes the decomposition of a tensor space, and develop an analog of Young tableaux, known as shell tableaux, to index paths in this graph.
Clustering via Hypergraph Modularity
Published • View Publication • BIB
Despite the fact that many important problems (including clustering) can be described using hypergraphs, theoretical foundations as well as practical algorithms using hypergraphs are not well developed yet. In this paper, we propose a hypergraph modularity function that generalizes its well established and widely used graph counterpart measure of how clustered a network is. In order to define it properly, we generalize the Chung-Lu model for graphs to hypergraphs. We then provide the theoretical foundations to search for an optimal solution with respect to our hypergraph modularity function. Two simple heuristic algorithms are described and applied to a few small illustrative examples. We show that using a strict version of our proposed modularity function often leads to a solution where a smaller number of hyperedges get cut as compared to optimizing modularity of 2-section graph of a hypergraph.

Path matrix and path energy of graphs
Given a graph $G$, we associate a path matrix $P$ whose $(i, j)$ entry represents the maximum number of vertex disjoint paths between the vertices $i$ and $j$, with zeros on the main diagonal. In this note, we resolve four conjectures from [M. M. Shikare, P. P. Malavadkar, S. C. Patekar, I. Gutman, \emph{On Path Eigenvalues and Path Energy of Graphs}, MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. {\bf 79} (2018), 387--398.] on the path energy of graphs and finally present efficient $O(|E| |V|^3)$ algorithm for computing the path matrix used for verifying computational results.
A generalization of the Tutte polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we introduce the concept of the Tutte polynomials of genus $g$ and discuss some of its properties. We note that the Tutte polynomials of genus one are well-known Tutte polynomials. The Tutte polynomials are matroid invariants, and we claim that the Tutte polynomials of genus $g$ are also matroid invariants. The main result of this paper and the forthcoming paper declares that the Tutte polynomials of genus $g$ are complete matroid invariants.
Trivalent expanders, $(Δ-Y)$-transformation, and hyperbolic surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct a new family of trivalent expanders tessellating hyperbolic surfaces with large isometry groups. These graphs are obtained from a family of Cayley graphs of nilpotent groups via $(Δ-Y)$-transformations. We compare this family with Platonic graphs and their associated hyperbolic surfaces and see that they are generally very different with only one hyperbolic surface in the intersection. Moreover, we study combinatorial, topological and spectral properties of our trivalent graphs and their associated hyperbolic surfaces.

Rainbow triangles and cliques in edge-colored graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For an edge-colored graph, a subgraph is called rainbow if all its edges have distinct colors. We show that if $G$ is an edge-colored graph of order $n$ and size $m$ using $c$ colors on its edges, and $m+c\geq \binom{n+1}{2}+k-1$ for a non-negative integer $k$, then $G$ contains at least $k$ rainbow triangles. For $n\geq 3k$, we show that this result is best possible, and we completely characterize the class of edge-colored graphs for which this result is sharp. Furthermore, we show that an edge-colored graph $G$ contains at least $k$ rainbow triangles if $\sum\limits_{v\in V(G)} d^c_G(v)\geq \binom{n+1}{2}+k-1$ where $d_G^c(v)$ denotes the number of distinct colors incident to a vertex $v$. Finally we characterize the edge-colored graphs without a rainbow clique of size at least six that maximize the sum of edges and colors $m+c$. Our results answer two questions of Fujita, Ning, Xu and Zhang [On sufficient conditions for rainbow cycles in edge-colored graph, arXiv:1705.03675, 2017]

Random graph's Hamiltonicity is strongly tied to its minimum degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the probability that a random graph $G\sim G(n,p)$ contains no Hamilton cycle is $(1+o(1))Pr(δ(G) < 2)$ for all values of $p = p(n)$. We also prove an analogous result for perfect matchings.
