Enumerating Acyclic Digraphs by Descents
A descent of a labeled acyclic digraph is a directed edge $x\to y$ with $x>y$. In this paper, we find a recurrence for the number of labeled acyclic digraphs with a given number of descents.
A geometric perspective on the MSTD question

A more sums than differences (MSTD) set $A$ is a subset of $\mathbb{Z}$ for which $|A+A| > |A-A|$. Martin and O'Bryant used probabilistic techniques to prove that a non-vanishing proportion of subsets of $\{1, \dots, n\}$ are MSTD as $n \to \infty$. However, to date only a handful of explicit constructions of MSTD sets are known. We study finite collections of disjoint intervals on the real line, $\mathbb{I}$, and explore the MSTD question for such sets, as well as the relation between such sets and MSTD subsets of $\mathbb{Z}$. In particular we show that every finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}$ can be transformed into an element of $\mathbb{I}$ with the same additive behavior. Using tools from discrete geometry, we show that there are no MSTD sets in $\mathbb{I}$ consisting of three or fewer intervals, but there are MSTD sets for four or more intervals. Furthermore, we show how to obtain an infinite parametrized family of MSTD subsets of $\mathbb{Z}$ from a single such set $A$; these sets are parametrized by lattice points satisfying simple congruence relations contained in a polyhedral cone associated to $A$.

Motivated by Amdeberhan's conjecture on $(t,t+1)$-core partitions with distinct parts, various results on the numbers, the largest sizes and the average sizes of simultaneous core partitions with distinct parts were obtained by many mathematicians recently. In this paper, we derive the largest sizes of $(t,mt\pm 1)$-core partitions with distinct parts, which verifies a generalization of Amdeberhan's conjecture. We also prove that the numbers of such partitions with the largest sizes are at most $2$.
Power index rankings in bicameral legislatures and the US legislative system

In this paper we study rankings induced by power indices of players in simple game models of bicameral legislatures. For a bicameral legislature where bills are passed with a simple majority vote in each house we give a condition involving the size of each chamber which guarantees that a member of the smaller house has more power than a member of the larger house, regardless of the power index used. The only case for which this does not apply is when the smaller house has an odd number of players, the larger house has an even number of players, and the larger house is less than twice the size of the smaller house. We explore what can happen in this exceptional case. These results generalize to multi-cameral legislatures. Using a standard model of the US legislative system as a simple game, we use our results to study power index rankings of the four types of players -- the president, the vice president, senators, and representatives. We prove that a senator is always ranked above a representative and ranked the same as or above the vice president. We also show that the president is always ranked above the other players. We show that for most power index rankings, including the Banzhaf and Shapley-Shubik power indices, the vice president is ranked above a representative, however, there exist power indices ranking a representative above the vice president.

We prove that a family of average weights for oscillating tableaux are polynomials in two variables, namely, the length of the oscillating tableau and the size of the ending partition, which generalizes a result of Hopkins and Zhang. Several explicit and asymptotic formulas for the average weights are also derived.

For any $r\geq 1$ and $\mathbf{n} \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq0}^r \setminus \{\mathbf0\}$ we construct a poset $W_{\mathbf{n}}$ called a 2-associahedron. The 2-associahedra arose in symplectic geometry, where they are expected to control maps between Fukaya categories of different symplectic manifolds. We prove that the completion $\widehat{W_{\mathbf{n}}}$ is an abstract polytope of dimension $|\mathbf{n}|+r-3$. There are forgetful maps $W_{\mathbf{n}} \to K_r$, where $K_r$ is the $(r-2)$-dimensional associahedron, and the 2-associahedra specialize to the associahedra (in two ways) and to the multiplihedra. In an appendix, we work out the 2- and 3-dimensional associahedra in detail.

We give a complete description of the congruence lattices of the following finite diagram monoids: the partition monoid, the planar partition monoid, the Brauer monoid, the Jones monoid (also known as the Temperley-Lieb monoid), the Motzkin monoid, and the partial Brauer monoid. All the congruences under discussion arise as special instances of a new construction, involving an ideal I, a retraction I->M onto the minimal ideal, a congruence on M, and a normal subgroup of a maximal subgroup outside I.

Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the degrees of $G$. For any real $α\in [0,1]$, Nikiforov \cite{VN1} defined the matrix $A_α(G)$ as $$A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G).$$ In this paper, we give some results on the eigenvalues of $A_α(G)$ with $α>1/2$. In particular, we show that for each $e\notin E(G)$, $λ_i(A_α(G+e))\geqλ_i(A_α(G))$. By utilizing the result, we prove have $λ_k(A_α(G))\leqαn-1$ for $2\leq k\leq n$. Moreover, we characterize the extremal graphs with equality holding. Finally, we show that $λ_n(A_α({G}))\geq 2α-1$ if $G$ contains no isolated vertices.
Inversions in split trees and conditional Galton--Watson trees

We study $I(T)$, the number of inversions in a tree $T$ with its vertices labeled uniformly at random, which is a generalization of inversions in permutations. We first show that the cumulants of $I(T)$ have explicit formulas involving the $k$-total common ancestors of $T$ (an extension of the total path length). Then we consider $X_n$, the normalized version of $I(T_n)$, for a sequence of trees $T_n$. For fixed $T_{n}$'s, we prove a sufficient condition for $X_n$ to converge in distribution. As an application, we identify the limit of $X_n$ for complete $b$-ary trees. For $T_n$ being split trees, we show that $X_n$ converges to the unique solution of a distributional equation. Finally, when $T_n$'s are conditional Galton--Watson trees, we show that $X_n$ converges to a random variable defined in terms of Brownian excursions. By exploiting the connection between inversions and the total path length, we are able to give results that are stronger and much broader compared to previous work by Panholzer and Seitz.
A Simple Proof Characterizing Interval Orders with Interval Lengths between 1 and $k$

A poset $P= (X, \prec)$ has an interval representation if each $x \in X$ can be assigned a real interval $I_x$ so that $x \prec y$ in $P$ if and only if $I_x$ lies completely to the left of $I_y$. Such orders are called \emph{interval orders}. Fishburn proved that for any positive integer $k$, an interval order has a representation in which all interval lengths are between $1$ and $k$ if and only if the order does not contain $\mathbf{(k+2)+1}$ as an induced poset. In this paper, we give a simple proof of this result using a digraph model.

We examine the incidence geometry of lines in the tropical plane. We prove tropical analogs of the Sylvester-Gallai and Motzkin-Rabin theorems in classical incidence geometry. This study leads naturally to a discussion of the realizability of incidence data of tropical lines. Drawing inspiration from the von Staudt constructions and Mnëv's universality theorem, we prove that determining whether a given tropical linear incidence datum is realizable by a tropical line arrangement requires solving an arbitrary linear programming problem over the integers.

If $K$ is a simplicial complex on $m$ vertices the flagification of $K$ is the minimal flag complex $K^f$ on the same vertex set that contains $K$. Letting $L$ be the set of vertices, there is a sequence of simplicial inclusions $L\to K\to K^f$. This induces a sequence of maps of polyhedral products $(\underline X,\underline A)^L\stackrel g\longrightarrow(\underline X,\underline A)^K\stackrel f\longrightarrow (\underline X,\underline A)^{K^f}$. We show that $Ωf$ and $Ωf\circΩg$ have right homotopy inverses and draw consequences. For a flag complex $K$ the polyhedral product of the form $(\underline{CY},\underline Y)^K$ is a co-$H$-space if and only if the $1$-skeleton of $K$ is a chordal graph, and we deduce that the maps $f$ and $f\circ g$ have right homotopy inverses in this case.
A note on graph compositions and their connection to minimax of set partitions
A graph composition is a partition of the vertex set such that each member of the partition induces a connected sub- graph, and the composition number of a graph is the number of possible graph compositions. A partition of a set S of consecutive labelled vertices is said to have a minimax vertex v in S if the label of v is the smallest label in the set of all maximum labels over all members of the partition. This paper exhibits a recursive formula for the composition number of a certain class of graphs and estab- lishes a connection between the composition numbers of this class of graphs and that of the minimax of partitions of a labelled set (the minimum label of the set of all maximum labels over every member of the partition).
A directed graph generalization of chromatic quasisymmetric functions
Stanley defined the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, and Shareshian and Wachs introduced a refinement, namely the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a labeled graph. In this paper, we define the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a directed graph, which agrees with the Shareshian-Wachs definition in the acyclic case. We give an F-basis expansion for all digraphs in terms of a permutation statistic, which we call G-descents. We use this expansion to derive a p-positivity formula for all digraphs with symmetric chromatic quasisymmetric functions. We show that the chromatic quasisymmetric functions of a certain class of digraphs, called circular indifference digraphs, have symmetric coefficients. We present an e-positivity formula for the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the directed cycle, which is a t-analog of a result of Stanley. Lastly, we give a generalization of the Shareshian-Wachs e-positivity conjecture to a larger class of digraphs.

The $b$-vector $(b_1,b_2\ldots,b_d)$ of a graph $G$ is defined in terms of its clique vector $(c_1,c_2\ldots,c_d)$ by the equation $\sum^d_{i=1}b_i(x+1)^{i-1}=\sum^d_{i=1} c_i x^{i-1},$ where $d$ is the largest cardinality of a clique in $G$. We study the relation of the $b$-vector of a chordal graph $G$ with some structural properties of $G$. In particular, we show that the $b$-vector encodes different aspects of the connectivity and clique dominance of $G$. Furthermore, we relate the $b$-vector with the Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ring associated to clique simplicial complex of $G$.

We find a graph of genus $5$ and its drawing on the orientable surface of genus $4$ with every pair of independent edges crossing an even number of times. This shows that the strong Hanani-Tutte theorem cannot be extended to the orientable surface of genus $4$. As a base step in the construction we use a counterexample to an extension of the unified Hanani-Tutte theorem on the torus.

The (tree) amplituhedron A(n,k,m) is the image in the Grassmannian Gr(k,k+m) of the totally nonnegative part of Gr(k,n), under a (map induced by a) linear map which is totally positive. It was introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka in 2013 in order to give a geometric basis for the computation of scattering amplitudes in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In the case relevant to physics (m=4), there is a collection of recursively-defined 4k-dimensional BCFW cells in the totally nonnegative part of Gr(k,n), whose images conjecturally "triangulate" the amplituhedron--that is, their images are disjoint and cover a dense subset of A(n,k,4). In this paper, we approach this problem by first giving an explicit (as opposed to recursive) description of the BCFW cells. We then develop sign-variational tools which we use to prove that when k=2, the images of these cells are disjoint in A(n,k,4). We also conjecture that for arbitrary even m, there is a decomposition of the amplituhedron A(n,k,m) involving precisely M(k, n-k-m, m/2) top-dimensional cells (of dimension km), where M(a,b,c) is the number of plane partitions contained in an a x b x c box. This agrees with the fact that when m=4, the number of BCFW cells is the Narayana number N(n-3, k+1).

A numerical monoid is an additive submonoid of the non-negative integers. Given a numerical monoid $S$, consider the family of "shifted" monoids $M_n$ obtained by adding $n$ to each generator of $S$. In this paper, we characterize the Apéry set of $M_n$ in terms of the Apéry set of the base monoid $S$ when $n$ is sufficiently large. We give a highly efficient algorithm for computing the Apéry set of $M_n$ in this case, and prove that several numerical monoid invariants, such as the genus and Frobenius number, are eventually quasipolynomial as a function of $n$.

Universal simplicial complexes inspired by toric topology
Let $\mathbf{k}$ be the field $\mathbb{F}_p$ or the ring $\mathbb{Z}$. We study combinatorial and topological properties of the universal simplicial complexes $X(\mathbf{k}^n)$ and $K(\mathbf{k}^n)$ whose simplices are certain unimodular subsets of $\mathbf{k}^n$. As a main result we show that $X(\mathbf{k}^n)$, $K(\mathbf{k}^n)$ and the links of their simplicies are homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres specifying the exact number of spheres in the corresponding wedge decompositions. This is a generalisation of Davis and Januszkiewicz's result that $K(\mathbb{Z}^n)$ and $K(\mathbb{F}_2^n)$ are $(n-2)$-connected simplicial complexes.
We discuss applications of these universal simplicial complexes to toric topology and number theory.
