Stringy Chern classes of singular toric varieties and their applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let X be a normal projective Q-Gorenstein variety with at worst log-terminal singularities. We prove a formula expressing the total stringy Chern class of a generic complete intersection in X via the total stringy Chern class of X. This formula is motivated by its applications to mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in toric varieties. We compute stringy Chern classes and give a combinatorial interpretation of the stringy Libgober-Wood identity for arbitrary projective Q-Gorenstein toric varieties. As an application we derive a new combinatorial identity relating d-dimensional reflexive polytopes to the number 12 in dimension d>3.

Multiparameter Fuss--Catalan numbers with application to algebraic equations
We present an exposition on the Fuss--Catalan numbers, which are a generalization of the well known Catalan numbers. The literature on the subject is scattered (especially for the case of multiple independent parameters, as will be explained in the text), with overlapping definitions by different authors and duplication of proofs. This paper collects the main theorems and identities, with a consistent notation. Contact is made with the works of numerous authors, including the early works of Lambert and Euler. We demonstrate the application of the formalism to solve algebraic equations by infinite series. Our main result in this context is a new necessary and sufficient formula for the domain of absolute convergence of the series solutions of algebraic equations, which corrects and extends previous work in the field. Some historical material is placed in an Appendix.

On the continuous-time limit of the Barabási-Albert random graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the Barabási-Albert model converges weakly to a set of generalized Yule models via an appropriate scaling. To pursue this aim we superimpose to its graph structure a suitable set of processes that we call the planted model and we introduce an ad-hoc sampling procedure. The use of the obtained limit process represents an alternative and advantageous way of looking at some of the asymptotic properties of the Barabási-Albert random graph.

Extended Gelfand-Tsetlin graph, its q-boundary, and q-B-splines
Published in Functional Analysis and its Applications 50 (2016), no. 2, 107-130 • View Publication • BIB
A continuation of the joint work by Vadim Gorin and the author, J. Funct. Anal. 270 (2016), 375-418; arXiv:1504.06832. The extended Gelfand-Tsetlin graph, introduced in that paper, is a novel combinatorial object. Its q-boundary is formed by infinite point configurations on a two-sided q-lattice. The q-boundary carries a continuous family of probability measures that are a q-analogue of the so-called zw-measures, which originated in the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group. In the present paper, it is proved that certain transition Markov kernels, linked to the extended Gelfand-Tsetlin graph and its q-boundary, possess the Feller property. This property is needed for constructing a model of Markov dynamics on the q-boundary. A connection with the classical B-splines and their q-analogues is discussed. Some results of the paper arXiv:1504.06832 are rederived in another way.

Circuit partitions and signed interlacement in 4-regular graphs
Published in Contributions to Discrete Mathematics 20 (2025), 456-480 • View Publication • BIB
Let $F$ be a 4-regular graph. Each circuit partition $P$ of $F$ has a corresponding touch-graph $Tch(P)$; the circuits in $P$ correspond to vertices of $Tch(P)$, and the vertices of $F$ correspond to edges of $Tch(P)$. We discuss the connection between modified versions of the interlacement matrix of an Euler system of $F$ and the cycle space of $Tch(P)$, over $GF(2)$ and $\mathbb{R}$.

Eternal Picaria
Published • View Publication • BIB
Picaria is a traditional board game, played by the Zuni tribe of the American Southwest and other parts of the world, such as a rural Southwest region in Sweden. It is related to the popular children's game of Tic-tac-toe, but the 2 players have only 3 stones each, and in the second phase of the game, pieces are slided, along specified move edges, in attempts to create the three-in-a-row. We provide a rigorous solution, and prove that the game is a draw; moreover our solution gives insights to strategies that players can use.

Sigma-Adequate Link Diagrams and the Tutte Polynomial
In this paper, we characterize the sigma-adequacy of a link diagram in two ways: in terms of a certain edge subset of its Tait graph and in terms of a certain product of Tutte polynomials. Furthermore, we show that the symmetrized Tutte polynomial of the Tait graph of a link diagram can be written as a sum of these products of Tutte polynomials, where the sum is over the sigma-adequate states of the given link diagram. Using this state sum, we show that the number of sigma-adequate states of a link diagram is bounded above by the number of spanning trees in its associated Tait graph. By combining results, we give a method to find all of the sigma-adequate states of a link diagram. Finally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a link diagram to be sigma-adequate and sigma-homogeneous (also called homogeneously adequate) with respect to a given state.

Pretty Good State Transfer on Circulant Graphs
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 24(2): P2.23 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A$. The transition matrix of $G$ relative to $A$ is defined by $H(t):=\exp{\left(-itA\right)},\;t\in\Rl$. The graph $G$ is said to admit pretty good state transfer between a pair of vertices $u$ and $v$ if there exists a sequence of real numbers $\{t_k\}$ and a complex number $γ$ of unit modulus such that $\lim\limits_{k\rightarrow\infty} H(t_k) e_u=γe_v.$ We find that pretty good state transfer occurs in a cycle on $n$ vertices if and only if $n$ is a power of two and it occurs between every pair of antipodal vertices. In addition, we look for pretty good state transfer in more general circulant graphs. We prove that union (edge disjoint) of an integral circulant graph with a cycle, each on $2^k$ $(k\geq 3)$ vertices, admits pretty good state transfer. The complement of such union also admits pretty good state transfer. This enables us to find some non-circulant graphs admitting pretty good state transfer. Among the complement of cycles we also find a class of graphs not exhibiting pretty good state transfer.

The Elekes-Szabó Theorem in four dimensions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $F\in\mathbb{C}[x,y,s,t]$ be an irreducible constant-degree polynomial, and let $A,B,C,D\subset\mathbb{C}$ be finite sets of size $n$. We show that $F$ vanishes on at most $O(n^{8/3})$ points of the Cartesian product $A\times B\times C\times D$, unless $F$ has a special group-related form. A similar statement holds for $A,B,C,D$ of unequal sizes. This is a four-dimensional extension of our recent improved analysis of the original Elekes-Szabó theorem in three dimensions. We give three applications: an expansion bound for three-variable real polynomials that do not have a special form, a bound on the number of coplanar quadruples on a space curve that is neither planar nor quartic, and a bound on the number of four-point circles on a plane curve that has degree at least five.

Standard Rothe Tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
Edelman and Greene constructed a bijection between the set of standard Young tableaux and the set of balanced Young tableaux of the same shape. Fomin, Greene, Reiner and Shimozono introduced the notion of balanced Rothe tableaux of a permutation $w$, and established a bijection between the set of balanced Rothe tableaux of $w$ and the set of reduced words of $w$. In this paper, we introduce the notion of standard Rothe tableaux of $w$, which are tableaux obtained by labelling the cells of the Rothe diagram of $w$ such that each row and each column is increasing. We show that the number of standard Rothe tableaux of $w$ is smaller than or equal to the number of balanced Rothe tableaux of $w$, with equality if and only if $w$ avoids the four patterns 2413, 2431, 3142 and 4132. When $w$ is a dominant permutation, i.e., 132-avoiding, the Rothe diagram of $w$ is a Young diagram, so this reduces to the result of Edelman and Greene.

Dimensions of multi-fan algebras
Published in J. Math. Soc. Japan 72:3 (2020), 777-794 • View Publication • BIB
Given an arbitrary non-zero simplicial cycle and a generic vector coloring of its vertices, there is a way to produce a graded Poincare duality algebra associated with these data. The procedure relies on the theory of volume polynomials and multi-fans. This construction includes many important examples, such as cohomology of toric varieties and quasitoric manifolds, and Gorenstein algebras of triangulated homology manifolds, introduced by Novik and Swartz. In all these examples the dimensions of graded components of such duality algebras do not depend on the vector coloring. It was conjectured that the same holds for any simplicial cycle. We disprove this conjecture by showing that the colors of singular points of the cycle may affect the dimensions. However, the colors of smooth points are irrelevant. By using bistellar moves we show that the number of different dimension vectors arising on a given 3-dimensional pseudomanifold with isolated singularities is a topological invariant. This invariant is trivial on manifolds, but nontrivial in general.
On Multi Poly-Bernoulli Polynomials
In this paper, we define multi poly-Bernoulli polynomials using multiple polylogarithm and derive some properties parallel to those of poly-Bernoulli polynomials. Furthermore, an explicit formula for certain Hurwitz-Lerch type multi poly-Bernoulli polynomials is established using the $r$-Whitney numbers of the second kind.

Emergence of the giant weak-component in directed random graphs with arbitrary degree distributions
Published in Physical Review E 94, 012315 (2016) • View Publication • BIB
The weak component generalizes the idea of connected components to directed graphs. In this paper, an exact criterion for existence of the giant weak component is derived for directed graphs with arbitrary bivariate degree distributions. In addition we consider a random process for evolving directed graphs with bounded degrees. The bounds are not the same for different vertices but satisfy a pre-defined distribution. The analytic expression obtained for the evolving degree distribution is then combined with the weak-component criterion to obtain the exact time of the phase transition. The phase-transition time is obtained as a function of the distribution that bounds the degrees. Remarkably, when viewed from the step polymerization formalism, the new results yield Flory-Stockmayer gelation theory and generalize it to a broader scope.

Well-distributed great circles on S^2
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $C_1, \dots, C_n$ denote the $1/n-$neighborhood of $n$ great circles on $\mathbb{S}^2$. We are interested in how much these areas have to overlap and prove the sharp bounds $$ \sum_{i, j = 1 \atop i \neq j}^{n}{|C_i \cap C_j|^s} \gtrsim_s \begin{cases} n^{2 - 2s} \qquad &\mbox{if}~0 \leq s < 2 \\ n^{-2} \log{n} \qquad &\mbox{if}~s = 2\\ n^{1- 3s/2} \qquad &\mbox{if}~s > 2. \end{cases} .$$ For $s=1$ there are arrangements for which the sum of mutual overlap is uniformly bounded (for the analogous problem in $\mathbb{R}^2$ the lower bound is $\gtrsim \log{n}$) and there are strong connections to minimal energy configurations of $n$ charged electrons on $\mathbb{S}^2$ (the J. J. Thomson problem).

Graph Isomorphism Restricted by Lists
The complexity of graph isomorphism (GraphIso) is a famous unresolved problem in theoretical computer science. For graphs $G$ and $H$, it asks whether they are the same up to a relabeling of vertices. In 1981, Lubiw proved that list restricted graph isomorphism (ListIso) is NP-complete: for each $u \in V(G)$, we are given a list ${\mathfrak L}(u) \subseteq V(H)$ of possible images of $u$. After 35 years, we revive the study of this problem and consider which results for GraphIso translate to ListIso. We prove the following: 1) When GraphIso is GI-complete for a class of graphs, it translates into NP-completeness of ListIso. 2) Combinatorial algorithms for GraphIso translate into algorithms for ListIso: for trees, planar graphs, interval graphs, circle graphs, permutation graphs, bounded genus graphs, and bounded treewidth graphs. 3) Algorithms based on group theory do not translate: ListIso remains NP-complete for cubic colored graphs with sizes of color classes bounded by 8. Also, ListIso allows to classify results for the graph isomorphism problem. Some algorithms are robust and translate to ListIso. A fundamental problem is to construct a combinatorial polynomial-time algorithm for cubic graph isomorphism, avoiding group theory. By the 3rd result, ListIso is NP-hard for them, so no robust algorithm for cubic graph isomorphism exists, unless P = NP.

Grünbaum coloring and its generalization to arbitrary dimension
Published in Australasian Journal of Combinatorics. 2017. Volume 67(2). Pages 119-130 • Search Publication
This paper is a collection of thoughts and observations, being partly a review and partly a report of current research, on recent work in various aspects of Grünbaum colorings, their existence and usage. In particular, one of the most striking significances of Grünbaum's Conjecture in the 2-dimensional case is its equivalence to the 4-Color Theorem. The notion of Grünbaum coloring is extended from the 2-dimensional case to the case of arbitrary finite hyper-dimensions.

Rigged configurations as tropicalizations of loop Schur functions
Published in J. Integrable Syst., 2(1) (2017) • View Publication • BIB
We conjecture an explicit formula for the image of a tensor product of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals $\bigotimes_{i=1}^m B^{1, s_i}$ under the Kirillov-Schilling-Shimozono bijection. Our conjectured formula is piecewise-linear, where the shapes are given by the tropicalization of cylindric loop Schur functions and the riggings are given by the tropicalization of loop Schur functions. We prove that our formula changes the riggings by the correct amount based upon the time evolution of the corresponding box-ball system. We show that our formula is correct under the column splitting portion of the Kirillov-Schilling-Shimozono bijection and for $B^{1, s}$.

Optimal induced universal graphs for bounded-degree graphs
Published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 166 (2019) 61-74 • View Publication • BIB
We show that for any constant $Δ\ge 2$, there exists a graph $G$ with $O(n^{Δ/ 2})$ vertices which contains every $n$-vertex graph with maximum degree $Δ$ as an induced subgraph. For odd $Δ$ this significantly improves the best-known earlier bound of Esperet et al. and is optimal up to a constant factor, as it is known that any such graph must have at least $Ω(n^{Δ/2})$ vertices. Our proof builds on the approach of Alon and Capalbo (SODA 2008) together with several additional ingredients. The construction of $G$ is explicit and is based on an appropriately defined composition of high-girth expander graphs. The proof also provides an efficient deterministic procedure for finding, for any given input graph $H$ on $n$ vertices with maximum degree at most $Δ$, an induced subgraph of $G$ isomorphic to $H$.
