Extremal results on average subtree density of series-reduced trees
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 107 (2014) • View Publication • BIB
Vince and Wang showed that the average subtree density of a series-reduced tree is between 1/2 and 3/4, answering a conjecture of Jamison. They ask under what conditions a sequence of such trees may have average subtree density tending to either bound; we answer these questions by giving simple necessary and sufficient conditions in each case.

Complexity Results for Rainbow Matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
A rainbow matching in an edge-colored graph is a matching whose edges have distinct colors. We address the complexity issue of the following problem, \mrbm: Given an edge-colored graph $G$, how large is the largest rainbow matching in $G$? We present several sharp contrasts in the complexity of this problem. We show, among others, that * can be approximated by a polynomial algorithm with approximation ratio $2/3-\eps$. * is APX-complete, even when restricted to properly edge-colored linear forests without a $5$-vertex path, and is solvable in %time $O(m^{3/2})$ on edge-colored $m$-edge polynomial time for edge-colored forests without a $4$-vertex path. * is APX-complete, even when restricted to properly edge-colored trees without an $8$-vertex path, and is solvable in %time $O(n^{7/2})$ on edge-colored $n$-vertex polynomial time for edge-colored trees without a $7$-vertex path. * is APX-complete, even when restricted to properly edge-colored paths. These results provide a dichotomy theorem for the complexity of the problem on forests and trees in terms of forbidding paths. The latter is somewhat surprising, since, to the best of our knowledge, no (unweighted) graph problem prior to our result is known to be NP-hard for simple paths. We also address the parameterized complexity of the problem.

Graph theory and Pfaffian representations of Ising partition function
A well known theorem due to Kasteleyn states that the partition function of an Ising model on an arbitrary planar graph can be represented as the Pfaffian of a skew-symmetric matrix associated to the graph. This results both embodies the free fermionic nature of any planar Ising model and eventually gives an effective way of computing its partition functions in closed form. An extension of this result to non planar models expresses the partition function as a sum of Pfaffians which number is related to the genus of the oriented surface on which the graph can be embedded. In graph theory, McLane's theorem (1937) gives a characterization of planarity as a property of the cycle space of a graph, and recently, Diestel et al. (2009) extended this approach to embeddings in arbitrary surfaces. Here we show that McLane's approach naturally leads to Kasteleyn's results: McLane characterization of planar graphs is just what is needed to turn an Ising partition function into a Pfaffian. Using this approach, we prove that the Ising partition function on an arbitrary non planar graph can be written as \emph{the real part}of the Pfaffian of a single matrix with coefficients taken in a multicomplex algebra $\C_{\tilde g}$, where $\tilde g$ is the non-orientable genus, or crosscap number, of the embedding surface. Known representations as sums of Pfaffians follow from this result. In particular, Kasteleyn's result which involves $4^g$ matrices with real coefficients, $g$ orientable genus, is also recovered through some algebraic reduction.

The proof of the removable pair conjecture for fractional dimension
In 1971 Trotter conjectured that every finite poset on at least $3$ points has a pair whose removal does not decrease the dimension by more than $1$. In 1992 Brightwell and Scheinerman introduced fractional dimension of posets, and they made a similar conjecture for fractional dimension. This paper settles this latter conjecture.

Borel Liftings of Graph Limits
Published • View Publication • BIB
The cut pseudo-metric on the space of graph limits induces an equivalence relation. The quotient space obtained by collapsing each equivalence class to a point is a metric space with appealing analytic properties. We show that the equivalence relation admits a Borel lifting: There exists a Borel-measurable mapping which maps each equivalence class to one of its elements.
Ehrhart polynomials with negative coefficients

It is shown that, for each $d \geq 4$, there exists an integral convex polytope $\mathcal{P}$ of dimension $d$ such that each of the coefficients of $n, n^{2}, \ldots, n^{d-2}$ of its Ehrhart polynomial $i(\mathcal{P},n)$ is negative.
The Markov chain tree theorem and the state reduction algorithm in commutative semirings
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 468 (2015) 184-196 • View Publication • BIB
We extend the Markov chain tree theorem to general commutative semirings, and we generalize the state reduction algorithm to commutative semifields. This leads to a new universal algorithm, whose prototype is the state reduction algorithm which computes the Markov chain tree vector of a stochastic matrix.
Coefficients of Sylvester's Denumerant
Published in INTEGERS, vol 15 (2005), A11 • View Publication • BIB
For a given sequence $\mathbfα = [α_1,α_2,\dots,α_{N+1}]$ of $N+1$ positive integers, we consider the combinatorial function $E(\mathbfα)(t)$ that counts the nonnegative integer solutions of the equation $α_1x_1+α_2 x_2+\cdots+α_{N} x_{N}+α_{N+1}x_{N+1}=t$, where the right-hand side $t$ is a varying nonnegative integer. It is well-known that $E(\mathbfα)(t)$ is a quasi-polynomial function in the variable $t$ of degree $N$. In combinatorial number theory this function is known as Sylvester's denumerant. Our main result is a new algorithm that, for every fixed number $k$, computes in polynomial time the highest $k+1$ coefficients of the quasi-polynomial $E(\mathbfα)(t)$ as step polynomials of $t$ (a simpler and more explicit representation). Our algorithm is a consequence of a nice poset structure on the poles of the associated rational generating function for $E(\mathbfα)(t)$ and the geometric reinterpretation of some rational generating functions in terms of lattice points in polyhedral cones. Our algorithm also uses Barvinok's fundamental fast decomposition of a polyhedral cone into unimodular cones. This paper also presents a simple algorithm to predict the first non-constant coefficient and concludes with a report of several computational experiments using an implementation of our algorithm in LattE integrale. We compare it with various Maple programs for partial or full computation of the denumerant.

Some Tauberian theory for the q-Lagrange inversion
We consider formal power series defined through the functional q-equation of the q-Lagrange inversion. Under some assumptions, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of the coefficients of these power series. As a by-product, we show that, via the 1/q-Borel transform, the q-Lagrange inversion formula provides an interpolation between the usual Lagrange inversion (q=1) and the probabilistic theory of renewal sequences (q tends to 0). We also discuss some new solutions of the q-Lagrange inversion equation which do not vanish at 0.

On the generation of bipartite grids with controlled regularity for 2-D and 3-D simply connected domains
Published in Applicable Analysis and Discrete Mathematics, 2014 • View Publication • BIB
We present a procedure to generate bipartite grids for simply connected domains in 2-D and 3-D of prescribed size and controlled regularity elements. The mesh elements $K$ of the triangulation satisfy $ζ_{K} \leq C$ where $ζ_{K}$ is the regularity and $C$ is a constant depending on the shape parameters of the initial mesh. Bipartite grids permit a well-posed mixed-mixed variational formulation of problems such as the porous media flow equation and other linear physical phenomena as well as Galerkin-type discontinuous relaxations.

Apéry's theorem and problems for the values of Riemann's zeta function and their $q$-analogues
This monograph is intended to be considered as my habilitation (D.Sc.) thesis; because of that and as everything has already appeared in English, it is performed exclusively in Russian. The monograph comprises a detailed introduction and seven chapters that represent part of my work influenced by Apéry's proof from 1978 of the irrationality of $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$, the values of Riemann's zeta function. Chapter 1 is about "at least one of the four numbers $ζ(5)$, $ζ(7)$, $ζ(9)$ and $ζ(11)$ is irrational" (based in part on arXiv:math.NT/0206176). Chapter 2 explains a connection between the generalized multiple integrals introduced by Beukers in his proof of Apéry's result and the very-well-poised hypergeometric series; it is based on arXiv:math.CA/0206177. Chapter 3 surveys some arithmetic and hypergeometric $q$-analogies and establishes the irrationality measure $μ(ζ_q(2))<3.518876$ for a $q$-analogue of $ζ(2)$; it closely follows the text in Sb. Math. 193 (2002), 1151--1172, but also incorporates the sharper analysis of the hypergeometric construction by Smet and Van Assche (arXiv:0809.2501 [math.CA]) to produce the improvement upon the 2002 result. Chapter 4 is devoted to the measure $μ(ζ(2))<5.095412$ and is based on arXiv:1310.1526 [math.NT]; Chapter 5 is establishing the estimate $||(3/2)^k||>0.5803^k$ for the distance from $(3/2)^k$ to the nearest integer, with the English version published in J. Théor. Nombres Bordeaux 19 (2007), 313--325. Chapter 6 reproduces the solution (from arXiv:math.CA/0311195) to the problem of Asmus Schmidt about generalized Apéry's numbers. Finally, Chapter 7 is about expressing the special $L$-values as periods (in the sense of Kontsevich and Zagier), in particular, as values of hypergeometric functions; it is based on the publication in Springer Proc. Math. Stat. 43 (2013), 381--395.
On hypergraph cliques and polynomial programming
Motzkin and Straus established a close connection between the maximum clique problem and a solution (namely graph-Lagrangians) to the maximum value of a class of homogeneous quadratic multilinear functions over the standard simplex of the Euclidean space in 1965. This connection provides a new proof of Turán's theorem. Recently, an extension of Motzkin-Straus theorem was proved for non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1 or 2 vertices in \cite{PPTZ}. It is interesting if similar results hold for other non-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we give some connection between polynomial programming and the clique of non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1, or 2, and more vertices. Specifically, we obtain some Motzkin-Straus type results in terms of the graph-Lagrangian of non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1, or 2, and more vertices.
On the Parameterized Complexity of Computing Balanced Partitions in Graphs
Published in Theory of Computing Systems 57(1):1-35, 2015 • View Publication • BIB
A balanced partition is a clustering of a graph into a given number of equal-sized parts. For instance, the Bisection problem asks to remove at most k edges in order to partition the vertices into two equal-sized parts. We prove that Bisection is FPT for the distance to constant cliquewidth if we are given the deletion set. This implies FPT algorithms for some well-studied parameters such as cluster vertex deletion number and feedback vertex set. However, we show that Bisection does not admit polynomial-size kernels for these parameters. For the Vertex Bisection problem, vertices need to be removed in order to obtain two equal-sized parts. We show that this problem is FPT for the number of removed vertices k if the solution cuts the graph into a constant number c of connected components. The latter condition is unavoidable, since we also prove that Vertex Bisection is W[1]-hard w.r.t. (k,c). Our algorithms for finding bisections can easily be adapted to finding partitions into d equal-sized parts, which entails additional running time factors of n^{O(d)}. We show that a substantial speed-up is unlikely since the corresponding task is W[1]-hard w.r.t. d, even on forests of maximum degree two. We can, however, show that it is FPT for the vertex cover number.
The k-metric dimension of a graph
As a generalization of the concept of a metric basis, this article introduces the notion of $k$-metric basis in graphs. Given a connected graph $G=(V,E)$, a set $S\subseteq V$ is said to be a $k$-metric generator for $G$ if the elements of any pair of different vertices of $G$ are distinguished by at least $k$ elements of $S$, i.e., for any two different vertices $u,v\in V$, there exist at least $k$ vertices $w_1,w_2,...,w_k\in S$ such that $d_G(u,w_i)\ne d_G(v,w_i)$ for every $i\in \{1,...,k\}$. A metric generator of minimum cardinality is called a $k$-metric basis and its cardinality the $k$-metric dimension of $G$. A connected graph $G$ is $k$-metric dimensional if $k$ is the largest integer such that there exists a $k$-metric basis for $G$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to be $k$-metric dimensional and we obtain several results on the $k$-metric dimension.

The closure of a linear space in a product of lines
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a linear space L in affine space A^n, we study its closure L' in the product of projective lines (P^1)^n. We show that the degree, multigraded Betti numbers, defining equations, and universal Grobner basis of its defining ideal I(L') are all combinatorially determined by the matroid M of L. We also prove I(L') and all of its initial ideals are Cohen-Macaulay with the same Betti numbers. In so doing, we prove that the initial ideals of I(L') are the Stanley-Reisner ideals of an interesting family of simplicial complexes related to the basis activities of M. We also describe the state polytope of I(L'), which is related to the matroid basis polytope of M.

The Devron property
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a criterion called the Devron property that a discrete dynamical system can possess. The Devron property is said to occur when a class of highly singular inputs of a mapping F are carried by some iterate of $F^{-1}$ to a class of highly singular inputs of $F^{-1}$. The inspiration for this definition is the discovery by R. Schwartz that the pentagram map exhibits this kind of behavior. We investigate occurrences of the Devron property in a number of different dynamical systems.

On asymptotically free action of permutation groups on subsets and multisets
Published in Diskretnaya Matematika, v.36, no.3 (2014), 101-120 (Russian); Discrete Mathematics and Applications, 2015, 25:1, 31-46 (English) • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a permutation group acting on a finite set $Ω$ of cardinality $n$. The number of orbits of the induced action of $G$ on the set $Ω_m$ of all size $m$ subsets of $Ω$ satisfies the trivial inequalities $|Ω_m|/|G|\leq |Ω_m/G|\leq |Ω_m|$. The paper offers improvements of the upper bound in terms of the minimal degree of $G$ or the minimal degree of some its subset with a small complement. Applications include asymptotic enumeration of point configurations in an affine space over a finite field, unlabeled graphs and hypergraphs. Finally, with references to known results of permutation groups theory it is shown that if $G$ is an arbitrary 2-transitive group except for $S_n$ and $A_n$, then $|Ω_m/G|\approx |Ω_m|/|G|$ for $m$ and $n$ large provided the ratio $m/n$ is bounded away from 0 and 1. Similar results hold for the induced action of $G$ on the set $Ω_{(m)}$ of all weight $m$ multisets on $Ω$ provided the ratio $m/n$ is not too small.
On the family of $r$-regular graphs with Grundy number $r+1$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Grundy number of a graph $G$, denoted by $Γ(G)$, is the largest $k$ such that there exists a partition of $V(G)$, into $k$ independent sets $V_1,\ldots, V_k$ and every vertex of $V_i$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $V_j$, for every $j < i$. The objects which are studied in this article are families of $r$-regular graphs such that $Γ(G) = r + 1$. Using the notion of independent module, a characterization of this family is given for $r=3$. Moreover, we determine classes of graphs in this family, in particular the class of $r$-regular graphs without induced $C_4$, for $r \le 4$. Furthermore, our propositions imply results on partial Grundy number.

Some congruences related to the q-Fermat quotients

We give q-analogues of the following congruences by Z.-W. Sun: \sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{D_k}{k} \equiv -\frac{2^{p-1}-1}{p} \pmod p,\\ \sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{H_k}{k 2^k}\equiv 0 \pmod{p},\quad p\geqslant 5, where p is a prime, D_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n+k\choose 2k}{2k\choose k} are the Delannoy numbers, and H_n=\sum_{k=1}^n\frac{1}{k} are the harmonic numbers. We also prove that, for any positive integer m and prime p>m+1, \sum_{1\leqslant k_1\leqslant \cdots \leqslant k_m\leqslant p-1}\frac{1}{k_1\cdots k_m 2^{k_m}} \equiv\frac{1}{2}\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{(-1)^{k-1}}{k^m} \pmod p, which is a multiple generalization of Kohnen's congruence. Furthermore, a q-analogue of this congruence is established.
