Diameters of Chevalley groups over local rings

Let G be a Chevalley group scheme of rank l. We show that the following holds for some absolute constant d>0 and two functions p_0=p_0(l) and C=C(l,p). Let p>p_0 be a prime number and let G_n:=G(\Z/p^n\Z) be the family of finite groups for n>0.
Then for any n>0 and any subset S which generates G_n we have diam(G_n,S)< C n^d, i.e., any element of G_n is a product of Cn^d elements from S\cup S^{-1}. In particular, for some C'=C'(l,p) and for any n>0 we have, diam(G_n,S)< C' log^d(|G_n|).
Our proof is elementary and effective, in the sense that the constant d and the functions p_0(l) and C(l,p) are calculated explicitly. Moreover, there exists an efficient algorithm to compute a short path between any two vertices in any Cayley graph of the groups G_n.

Let $Q_n$ be the $n$-dimensional hypercube, and let ${\rm cr}(Q_n)$ be the \textit{crossing number} of $Q_n$. Erdős and Guy in 1973 conjectured the following equality: ${\rm cr}(Q_n)=\frac{5}{32}4^n-\lfloor\frac{n^2+1}{2}\rfloor 2^{n-2}$. In this paper, we construct a drawing of $Q_n$ with less crossings when $n>6$, which implies that for $n>6$ we have a strict inequality.
A simple approach to q-Chebyshev polynomials
It is shown that some q-analogues of the Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials lead to q-analogues of the Chebyshev polynomials which retain most of their elementary properties.
Shape-Wilf-equivalences for vincular patterns

We extend the notion of shape-Wilf-equivalence to vincular patterns (also known as "generalized patterns" or "dashed patterns"). First we introduce a stronger equivalence on patterns which we call filling-shape-Wilf-equivalence. When vincular patterns $α$ and $β$ are filling-shape-Wilf-equivalent, we prove that the direct sum $α\oplusσ$ is filling-shape-Wilf-equivalent to $β\oplusσ$. We also discover two new pairs of patterns which are filling-shape-Wilf-equivalent: when $α$, $β$, and $σ$ are nonempty consecutive patterns which are Wilf-equivalent, $α\oplusσ$ is filling-shape-Wilf-equivalent to $β\oplusσ$; and for any consecutive pattern $α$, $1\oplusα$ is filling-shape-Wilf-equivalent to $1\ominusα$. These equivalences generalize Wilf-equivalences found by Elizalde and Kitaev. These new equivalences imply many new Wilf-equivalences for vincular patterns
Computations for Coxeter arrangements and Solomon's descent algebra II: Groups of rank five and six

In recent papers we have refined a conjecture of Lehrer and Solomon expressing the character of a finite Coxeter group $W$ acting on the $p$th graded component of its Orlik-Solomon algebra as a sum of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$. Our refined conjecture relates the character above to a component of a decomposition of the regular character of $W$ related to Solomon's descent algebra of $W$. The refined conjecture has been proved for symmetric and dihedral groups, as well as finite Coxeter groups of rank three and four.
In this paper, the second in a series of three dealing with groups of rank up to eight (and in particular, all exceptional Coxeter groups), we prove the conjecture for finite Coxeter groups of rank five and six, further developing the algorithmic tools described in the previous article. The techniques developed and implemented in this paper provide previously unknown decompositions of the regular and Orlik-Solomon characters of the groups considered.
Blockers for non-crossing spanning trees in complete geometric graphs

In this paper we present a complete characterization of the smallest sets that block all the simple spanning trees (SSTs) in a complete geometric graph. We also show that if a subgraph is a blocker for all SSTs of diameter at most 4, then it must block all simple spanning subgraphs, and in particular, all SSTs. For convex geometric graphs, we obtain an even stronger result: being a blocker for all SSTs of diameter at most 3 is already sufficient for blocking all simple spanning subgraphs.

We provide a model of the split Cayley hexagon arising from the Hermitian surface $\mathsf{H}(3,q^2)$, thereby yielding a geometric construction of the Dickson group $G_2(q)$ starting with the unitary group $\mathsf{SU}_3(q)$.
On the combinatorial structure of crystals of types A,B,C
Regular $A_n$-, $B_n$- and $C_n$-crystals are edge-colored directed graphs, with ordered colors $1,2,...,n$, which are related to representations of quantized algebras $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1})$, $U_q(\mathfrak{sp}_{2n})$ and $U_q(\mathfrak{so}_{2n+1})$, respectively. We develop combinatorial methods to reveal refined structural properties of such objects.
Firstly, we study subcrystals of a regular $A_n$-crystal $K$ and characterize pairwise intersections of maximal subcrystals with colors $1,...,n-1$ and colors $2,...,n$. This leads to a recursive description of the structure of $K$ and provides an efficient procedure of assembling $K$.
Secondly, using merely combinatorial means, we demonstrate a relationship between regular $B_n$-crystals (resp. $C_n$-crystals) and regular symmetric $A_{2n-1}$-crystals (resp. $A_{2n}$-crystals).

Since every even power of the Vandermonde determinant is a symmetric polynomial, we want to understand its decomposition in terms of the basis of Schur functions. We investigate several combinatorial properties of the coefficients in the decomposition. In particular, we give recursive formulas for the coefficient of the Schur function $s_{\m}$ in the decomposition of an even power of the Vandermonde determinant in $n + 1$ variables in terms of the coefficient of the Schur function $s_ł$ in the decomposition of the same even power of the Vandermonde determinant in $n$ variables if the Young diagram of $\m$ is obtained from the Young diagram of $ł$ by adding a tetris type shape to the top or to the left. An extended abstract containing the statement of the results presented here appeared in the Proceedings of FPSAC11
Rainbow Connectivity of Sparse Random Graphs

An edge colored graph $G$ is rainbow edge connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connectivity of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $rc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected.
In this work we study the rainbow connectivity of binomial random graphs at the connectivity threshold $p=\frac{\log n+\om}{n}$ where $\om=\om(n)\to\infty$ and ${\om}=o(\log{n})$ and of random $r$-regular graphs where $r \geq 3$ is a fixed integer. Specifically, we prove that the rainbow connectivity $rc(G)$ of $G=G(n,p)$ satisfies $rc(G) \sim \max\set{Z_1,diameter(G)}$ with high probability (\whp). Here $Z_1$ is the number of vertices in $G$ whose degree equals 1 and the diameter of $G$ is asymptotically equal to $\diam$ \whp. Finally, we prove that the rainbow connectivity $rc(G)$ of the random $r$-regular graph $G=G(n,r)$ satisfies $rc(G) =O(\log^2{n})$ \whp.
Strong Splitter Theorem

The Splitter Theorem states that, if $N$ is a 3-connected proper minor of a 3-connected matroid $M$ such that, if $N$ is a wheel or whirl then $M$ has no larger wheel or whirl, respectively, then there is a sequence $M_0,..., M_n$ of 3-connected matroids with $M_0\cong N$, $M_n=M$ and for $i\in \{1,..., n\}$, $M_i$ is a single-element extension or coextension of $M_{i-1}$. Observe that there is no condition on how many extensions may occur before a coextension must occur. In this paper, we give a strengthening of the Splitter Theorem, as a result of which we can obtain, up to isomorphism, $M$ starting with $N$ and at each step doing a 3-connected single-element extension or coextension, such that at most two consecutive single-element extensions occur in the sequence (unless the rank of the matroids involved are $r(M)$). Moreover, if two consecutive single-element extensions by elements $\{e, f\}$ are followed by a coextension by element $g$, then $\{e, f, g\}$ form a triad in the resulting matroid. Using the Strong Splitter Theorem, we make progress toward the problem of determining the almost-regular matroids [6, 15.9.8]. {\it Find all 3-connected non-regular matroids such that, for all $e$, either $M\backslash e$ or $M/e$ is regular.} In [4] we determined the binary almost-regular matroids with at least one regular element (an element such that both $M\backslash e$ and $M/e$ is regular) by characterizing the class of binary almost-regular matroids with no minor isomorphic to one particular matroid that we called $E_5$. As a consequence of the Strong Splitter Theorem we can determine the class of binary matroids with an $E_5$-minor, but no $E_4$-minor.
Computing with rational symmetric functions and applications to invariant theory and PI-algebras
Let the formal power series f in d variables with coefficients in an arbitrary field be a symmetric function decomposed as a series of Schur functions, and let f be a rational function whose denominator is a product of binomials of the form (1 - monomial). We use a classical combinatorial method of Elliott of 1903 further developed in the Partition Analysis of MacMahon in 1916 to compute the generating function of the multiplicities (i.e., the coefficients) of the Schur functions in the expression of f. It is a rational function with denominator of a similar form as f. We apply the method to several problems on symmetric algebras, as well as problems in classical invariant theory, algebras with polynomial identities, and noncommutative invariant theory.

In this paper we describe all edge-colored graphs that are fully symmetric with respect to colors and transitive on every set of edges of the same color. They correspond to fully symmetric homogeneous factorizations of complete graphs. Our description completes the work done in our previous paper, where we have shown, in particular, that there are no such graphs with more than 5 colors. Using some recent results, with a help of computer, we settle all the cases that was left open in the previous paper.
A new geometric approach to Sturmian words
We introduce a new geometric approach to Sturmian words by means of a mapping that associates certain lines in the n x n -grid and sets of finite Sturmian words of length n. Using this mapping, we give new proofs of the formulas enumerating the finite Sturmian words and the palindromic finite Sturmian words of a given length. We also give a new proof for the well-known result that a factor of a Sturmian word has precisely two return words.

If $G$ and $H$ are two cubic graphs, then we write $H\prec G$, if $G$ admits a proper edge-coloring $f$ with edges of $H$, such that for each vertex $x$ of $G$, there is a vertex $y$ of $H$ with $f(\partial_G(x))=\partial_H(y)$. Let $P$ and $S$ be the Petersen graph and the Sylvester graph, respectively. In this paper, we introduce the Sylvester coloring conjecture. Moreover, we show that if $G$ is a connected bridgeless cubic graph with $G\prec P$, then $G=P$. Finally, if $G$ is a connected cubic graph with $G\prec S$, then $G=S$.
Combinatorics of lower order terms in the moment conjectures for the Riemann zeta function
Conrey, Farmer, Keating, Rubinstein and Snaith have given a recipe that conjecturally produces, among others, the full moment polynomial for the Riemann zeta function. The leading term of this polynomial is given as a product of a factor explained by arithmetic and a factor explained by combinatorics (or, alternatively, random matrices). We explain how the lower order terms arise, and clarify the dependency of each factor on the exponent $k$ that is considered.
We use extensively the theory of symmetric functions and representations of symmetric groups, ideas of Lascoux on manipulations of alphabets, and a key lemma, due in a basic version to Bump and Gamburd. Our main result ends up involving dimensions of skew partitions, as studied by Olshanski, Regev, Vershik, Ivanov and others.
In this article, we also lay the groundwork for later unification of the combinatorial computations for lower order terms in the moments conjectures across families of $L$-functions of unitary, orthogonal and symplectic types.
Highest weight sl_2-categorifications I: crystals

We define highest weight categorical actions of sl_2 on highest weight categories and show that basically all known examples of categorical sl_2-actions on highest weight categories (including rational and polynomial representations of general linear groups, parabolic categories O of type $A$, categories O for cyclotomic Rational Cherednik algebras) are highest weight in our sense. Our main result is an explicit combinatorial description of (the labels of) the crystal on the set of simple objects. A new application of this is to determining the supports of simple modules over the cyclotomic Rational Cherednik algebras starting from their labels.
Rectification of Composition Tableaux
In this paper we define an algorithm for rectifying one cell in a composition tableau. We then describe a generalization of this rectification process. The generalization is from one cell in the first column to any number of cells in the first column, provided they are bottom-justified.
