A Littlewood-Richardson Type Rule for Row-Strict Quasisymmetric Schur Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a Littlewood-Richardson type rule for expanding the product of a row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function and a symmetric Schur function in terms of row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions. This expansion follows from several new properties of an insertion algorithm defined by Mason and Remmel (2010) which inserts a positive integer into a row-strict composition tableau.

Critical Sets in Bipartite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G=(V,E) be a graph. A set S is independent if no two vertices from S are adjacent, alpha(G) is the size of a maximum independent set, and core(G) is the intersection of all maximum independent sets. The number d(X)=|X|-|N(X)| is the difference of the set X, and d_{c}(G)=max{d(I):I is an independent set} is called the critical difference of G. A set X is critical if d(X)=d_{c}(G). For a graph G we define ker(G) as the intersection of all critical independent sets, while diadem(G) is the union of all critical independent sets. For a bipartite graph G=(A,B,E), with bipartition {A,B}, Ore defined delta(X)=d(X) for every subset X of A, while delta_0(A)=max{delta(X):X is a subset of A}. Similarly is defined delta_0(B). In this paper we prove that for every bipartite graph G=(A,B,E) the following assertions hold: d_{c}(G)=delta_0(A)+delta_0(B); ker(G)=core(G); |ker(G)|+|diadem(G)|=2*alpha(G).

An Algorithm Computing the Core of a Konig-Egervary Graph
A set S of vertices is independent in a graph G if no two vertices from S are adjacent, and alpha(G) is the cardinality of a maximum independent set of G. G is called a Konig-Egervary graph if its order equals alpha(G)+mu(G), where mu(G) denotes the size of a maximum matching. By core(G) we mean the intersection of all maximum independent sets of G. To decide whether core(G) is empty is known to be NP-hard. In this paper, we present some polynomial time algorithms finding core(G) of a Konig-Egervary graph G.

Local Maximum Stable Sets Greedoids Stemmed from Very Well-Covered Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A maximum stable set in a graph G is a stable set of maximum cardinality. S is called a local maximum stable set of G if S is a maximum stable set of the subgraph induced by the closed neighborhood of S. A greedoid (V,F) is called a local maximum stable set greedoid if there exists a graph G=(V,E) such that its family of local maximum stable sets coinsides with (V,F). It has been shown that the family local maximum stable sets of a forest T forms a greedoid on its vertex set. In this paper we demonstrate that if G is a very well-covered graph, then its family of local maximum stable sets is a greedoid if and only if G has a unique perfect matching.

On sum of powers of Laplacian eigenvalues and Laplacian Estrada index of graphs
Published in MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 62 (2009) 611-619 • Search Publication
Let $G$ be a simple graph and $α$ a real number. The quantity $s_α(G)$ defined as the sum of the $α$-th power of the non-zero Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ generalizes several concepts in the literature. The Laplacian Estrada index is a newly introduced graph invariant based on Laplacian eigenvalues. We establish bounds for $s_α$ and Laplacian Estrada index related to the degree sequences.

Destroying Non-Complete Regular Components in Graph Partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that if $G$ is a graph and $r_1, ..., r_k \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ such that $\sum_{i=1}^k r_i \geq Δ(G) + 2 - k$ then $V(G)$ can be partitioned into sets $V_1, ..., V_k$ such that $Δ(G[V_i]) \leq r_i$ and $G[V_i]$ contains no non-complete $r_i$-regular components for each $1 \leq i \leq k$. In particular, the vertex set of any graph $G$ can be partitioned into $\left \lceil \frac{Δ(G) + 2}{3} \right \rceil$ sets, each of which induces a disjoint union of triangles and paths.

Quantum loop algebras, quiver varieties, and cluster algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
These notes reflect the contents of three lectures given at the workshop of the 14th International Conference on Representations of Algebras (ICRA XIV), held in August 2010 in Tokyo. We first provide an introduction to quantum loop algebras and their finite-dimensional representations. We explain in particular Nakajima's geometric description of the irreducible q-characters in terms of graded quiver varieties. We then present a recent attempt to understand the tensor structure of the category of finite- dimensional representations by means of cluster algebras.

Riordan arrays, orthogonal polynomials as moments, and Hankel transforms
Taking the examples of Legendre and Hermite orthogonal polynomials, we show how to interpret the fact that these orthogonal polynomials are moments of other orthogonal polynomials in terms of their associated Riordan arrays. We use these means to calculate the Hankel transforms of the associated polynomial sequences.

On explosions in heavy-tailed branching random walks
Published in Annals of Probability 2013, Vol. 41, No. 3B, 1864-1899 • View Publication • BIB
Consider a branching random walk on $\mathbb{R}$, with offspring distribution Z and nonnegative displacement distribution W. We say that explosion occurs if an infinite number of particles may be found within a finite distance of the origin. In this paper, we investigate this phenomenon when the offspring distribution Z is heavy-tailed. Under an appropriate condition, we are able to characterize the pairs (Z, W) for which explosion occurs, by demonstrating the equivalence of explosion with a seemingly much weaker event: that the sum over generations of the minimum displacement in each generation is finite. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our condition on the tail is best possible for this equivalence to occur. We also investigate, under additional smoothness assumptions, the behavior of $M_n$, the position of the particle in generation n closest to the origin, when explosion does not occur (and hence $\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}M_n=\infty$).

Using Razborov's flag algebras we show that a triangle-free graph on n vertices contains at most (n/5)^5 cycles of length five. It settles in the affirmative a conjecture of Erdos.

The strong-connectivity of word-representable digraphs
A word-graph Gw is a digraph represented by a word w such that the vertex-set V(Gw) is the alphabet of w and the edge-set E(Gw) is determined by non-identical adjacent letter pairs in w. In this paper we study the strong-connectivity of word-graphs. Our main result is that the number of strongly connected word-graphs represented by l-words of over an n-alphabet can be expressed via a recurrence relation T(l,n) on the Stirling numbers of the second kind using a link between word partitions and digraph connectivity.

Frobenius polytopes
A real representation of a finite group naturally determines a polytope, generalizing the well-known Birkhoff polytope. This paper determines the structure of the polytope corresponding to the natural permutation representation of a general Frobenius group.

An improvement on Brooks' Theorem
We prove that $χ(G) \leq \max {ω(G), Δ_2(G), (5/6)(Δ(G) + 1)}$ for every graph $G$ with $Δ(G) \geq 3$. Here $Δ_2$ is the parameter introduced by Stacho that gives the largest degree that a vertex $v$ can have subject to the condition that $v$ is adjacent to a vertex whose degree is at least as large as its own. This upper bound generalizes both Brooks' Theorem and the Ore-degree version of Brooks' Theorem.

Coloring $Δ$-Critical Graphs With Small High Vertex Cliques
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that $K_{χ(G)}$ is the only critical graph $G$ with $χ(G) \geq Δ(G) \geq 6$ and $ω(\mathcal{H}(G)) \leq \left \lfloor \frac{Δ(G)}{2} \right \rfloor - 2$. Here $\mathcal{H}(G)$ is the subgraph of $G$ induced on the vertices of degree at least $χ(G)$. Setting $ω(\mathcal{H}(G)) = 1$ proves a conjecture of Kierstead and Kostochka.

In Praise of an Elementary Identity of Euler
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics, Vol 18 (2), P13, 44pp. (2011) • View Publication • BIB
We survey the applications of an elementary identity used by Euler in one of his proofs of the Pentagonal Number Theorem. Using a suitably reformulated version of this identity that we call Euler's Telescoping Lemma, we give alternate proofs of all the key summation theorems for terminating Hypergeometric Series and Basic Hypergeometric Series, including the terminating Binomial Theorem, the Chu--Vandermonde sum, the Pfaff--Saalch\" utz sum, and their $q$-analogues. We also give a proof of Jackson's $q$-analog of Dougall's sum, the sum of a terminating, balanced, very-well-poised $_8φ_7$ sum. Our proofs are conceptually the same as those obtained by the WZ method, but done without using a computer. We survey identities for Generalized Hypergeometric Series given by Macdonald, and prove several identities for $q$-analogs of Fibonacci numbers and polynomials and Pell numbers that have appeared in combinatorial contexts. Some of these identities appear to be new.
