Ranking patterns of unfolding models of codimension one
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 47 (2011) 379-400 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of counting the number of possible sets of rankings (called ranking patterns) generated by unfolding models of codimension one. We express the ranking patterns as slices of the braid arrangement and show that all braid slices, including those not associated with unfolding models, are in one-to-one correspondence with the chambers of an arrangement. By identifying those which are associated with unfolding models, we find the number of ranking patterns. We also give an upper bound for the number of ranking patterns when the difference by a permutation of objects is ignored.

Congruences modulo powers of 5 for three-colored Frobenius partitions
Motivated by a question of Lovejoy \cite{lovejoy}, we show that three-colored Frobenius partition function $\c3$ and related arithmetic fuction $\cc3$ vanish modulo some powers of 5 in certain arithmetic progressions.

The Littlewood-Offord problem in high dimensions and a conjecture of Frankl and Füredi
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a new bound on the probability that the random sum $ξ_1 v_1 +...+ ξ_n v_n$ belongs to a ball of fixed radius, where the $ξ_i$ are iid Bernoulli random variables and the $v_i$ are vectors in $\R^d$. As an application, we prove a conjecture of Frankl and Füredi (raised in 1988), which can be seen as the high dimensional version of the classical Littlewood-Offord-Erd\H os theorem.

Note on the Calculation of Groebner-Shirshov Bases for Affine Weyl Groups
In this work we will consider the calculation of Groebner-Shirshov bases of Coxeter groups. This will be the main focus of the work. In \cite{Bokut-Shiao}, Bokut & Shiao gave the Groebner-Shirshov bases of positive definite classical Coxeter groups $A_l, B_l, D_l$ by using the techniques of Elimination of Leading Word. We will give a counter example to a hypothesis which is introduced by Bokut & Shiao in \cite{Bokut-Shiao} and we will calculate the Groebner-Shirshov bases of the positive degenerate infinite affine Weyl group $\widetilde{A}_n $ which is isomorphic to semi-direct product group $Σ_n \ltimes {\mathbb Z}^{n-1}$, and further we classify all the reduced elements of the group by using the Composition Diamond Lemma.

Ideals of Graph Homomorphisms
In combinatorial commutative algebra and algebraic statistics many toric ideals are constructed from graphs. Keeping the categorical structure of graphs in mind we give previous results a more functorial context and generalize them by introducing the ideals of graph homomorphisms. For this new class of ideals we investigate how the topology of the graphs influence the algebraic properties. We describe explicit Grobner bases for several classes, generalizing results by Hibi, Sturmfels and Sullivant. One of our main tools is the toric fiber product, and we employ results by Engstrom, Kahle and Sullivant. The lattice polytopes defined by our ideals include important classes in optimization theory, as the stable set polytopes.

A counterexample to the Alon-Saks-Seymour conjecture and related problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider a graph obtained by taking edge disjoint union of $k$ complete bipartite graphs. Alon, Saks and Seymour conjectured that such graph has chromatic number at most $k+1$. This well known conjecture remained open for almost twenty years. In this paper, we construct a counterexample to this conjecture and discuss several related problems in combinatorial geometry and communication complexity.

Real Bott manifolds and acyclic digraphs
Masuda (2008) provided the characterization of real Bott manifolds in terms of three operations on upper triangular matrices. We provide a combinatorial characterization of real Bott manifolds up to diffeomorphism in terms of operations on directed acyclic graphs. Our observation leads to several new invariants of real Bott manifolds.

A superlinear bound on the number of perfect matchings in cubic bridgeless graphs
Published in European J. Combin. 33(5) (2012), 767-798 • View PublicationBIB
Lovasz and Plummer conjectured in the 1970's that cubic bridgeless graphs have exponentially many perfect matchings. This conjecture has been verified for bipartite graphs by Voorhoeve in 1979, and for planar graphs by Chudnovsky and Seymour in 2008, but in general only linear bounds are known. In this paper, we provide the first superlinear bound in the general case.

Cumulants and convolutions via Abel polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide an unifying polynomial expression giving moments in terms of cumulants, and viceversa, holding in the classical, boolean and free setting. This is done by using a symbolic treatment of Abel polynomials. As a by-product, we show that in the free cumulant theory the volume polynomial of Pitman and Stanley plays the role of the complete Bell exponential polynomial in the classical theory. Moreover via generalized Abel polynomials we construct a new class of cumulants, including the classical, boolean and free ones, and the convolutions linearized by them. Finally, via an umbral Fourier transform, we state a explicit connection between boolean and free convolution.

On the Connectivity of the Sylow Graph of a Finite Group
Published in Advances in Pure Mathematics, Vol. 02, No. 6, 2012, pp.373-378 • View PublicationBIB
The Sylow graph $Γ(G)$ of a finite group $G$ originated from recent investigations on the so--called $\mathbf{N}$--closed classes of groups. The connectivity of $Γ(G)$ was proved only few years ago, involving the classification of finite simple groups, and the structure of $G$ may be strongly restricted, once information on $Γ(G)$ are given. The first result of the present paper deals with a condition on $\mathbf{N}$--closed classes of groups. The second result deals with a computational criterion, related to the connectivity of $Γ(G)$.

Monomization of Power Ideals and Parking Functions
In this note, we find a monomization of a certain power ideal associated to a directed graph. This power ideal has been studied in several settings. The combinatorial method described here extends earlier work of other, and will work on several other types of power ideals, as will appear in later work.

A Model Theoretic Proof of Szemerédi's Theorem
We present a short proof of Szemerédi's Theorem using a dynamical system enriched by ideas from model theory. The resulting proof contains features reminiscent of proofs based on both ergodic theory and on hypergraph regularity.

Multilateral basic hypergeometric summation identities and hyperoctahedral group symmetries
We give new proofs for certain bilateral basic hypergeometric summation formulas using the symmetries of the corresponding series. In particular, we present a proof for Bailey's $_3ψ_3$ summation formula as an application. We also prove a multiple series analogue of this identity by considering hyperoctahedral group symmetries of higher ranks.

Graph Invariants and Large Cycles - a Catalog of Pure Links
Published • View PublicationBIB
Graph invariants provide a powerful analytical tool for investigation of abstract structures of graphs. They, combined in convenient relations, carry global and general information about a graph and its various substructures such as cycle structures, factors, matchings, colorings, coverings, and so on, whose discovery is the primary problem of graph theory. The major goal of this paper is to catalogue all pure relations between basic invariants of a graph and its large cycle structures, namely Hamilton, longest and dominating cycles and some their generalizations. Basic graph invariants and pure relations allow to focus on results having no forerunners. These simplest kind of "ancestors" form a source from which nearly all possible hamiltonian results can be developed further by various additional new ideas, generalizations, extensions, restrictions and structural limitations, as well as helping researchers to make clear and simple imagination about "complicated" developmental mechanisms in the area.

Humps for Dyck and for Motzkin paths
We calculate the total number of humps in Dyck and in Motzkin paths, and we give Standard-Young-Tableaux-interpretations of the numbers involved. One then observes the intriguing phenomena that the humps-calculations change the partitions in a strip to partitions in a hook.

On linear $q$-ary completely regular codes with $ρ=2$ and dual antipodal
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize all linear $q$-ary completely regular codes with covering radius $ρ=2$ when the dual codes are antipodal. These completely regular codes are extensions of linear completely regular codes with covering radius 1, which are all classified. For $ρ=2$, we give a list of all such codes known to us. This also gives the characterization of two weight linear antipodal codes.

Coloring geometric hyper-graph defined by an arrangement of half-planes
We prove that any finite set of half-planes can be colored by two colors so that every point of the plane, which belongs to at least three half-planes in the set, is covered by half-planes of both colors. This settles a problem of Keszegh.

On topological relaxations of chromatic conjectures
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 31/8 (2010) 2110-2119 • View PublicationBIB
There are several famous unsolved conjectures about the chromatic number that were relaxed and already proven to hold for the fractional chromatic number. We discuss similar relaxations for the topological lower bound(s) of the chromatic number. In particular, we prove that such a relaxed version is true for the Behzad-Vizing conjecture and also discuss the conjectures of Hedetniemi and of Hadwiger from this point of view. For the latter, a similar statement was already proven in an earlier paper of the first author with G. Tardos, our main concern here is that the so-called odd Hadwiger conjecture looks much more difficult in this respect. We prove that the statement of the odd Hadwiger conjecture holds for large enough Kneser graphs and Schrijver graphs of any fixed chromatic number.

Palindromes In Sturmian Strings
Let p be a maximal palindrome in a Sturmian word s=ul_1pl_2v so that p is a palindrome and l_1pl_2 is not for letters l_1 and l_2. Let α(p,p') be a morphism mapping letters a and b respectively to a^pb and a^p'b, |p-p'|=1. In this paper, we characterize the palindromes in a Sturmian word and show that the number of maximal palindromes in a Sturmian word X= α(p,p')(Y) for finite Y and thus X is 2|X|-2|Y|. We show that the set of maximal palindromes in a finite Sturmian word X has the cardinality Σ i=1..n max(pi,p'i) where X is characterized by subsequent mappings of i=1..n.
