Asymptotics of Lagged Fibonacci Sequences
Consider "lagged" Fibonacci sequences $a(n) = a(n-1)+a(\lfloor n/k\rfloor)$ for $k > 1$. We show that $\lim_{n\to\infty} a(kn)/a(n)\cdot\ln n/n = k\ln k$ and we demonstrate the slow numerical convergence to this limit and how to deal with this slow convergence. We also discuss the connection between two classical results of N.G. de Bruijn and K. Mahler on the asymptotics of $a(n)$.
Tropical polyhedra are equivalent to mean payoff games
Published in International of Algebra and Computation, 22(1):125001 (43 pages), 2012 • View PublicationBIB
We show that several decision problems originating from max-plus or tropical convexity are equivalent to zero-sum two player game problems. In particular, we set up an equivalence between the external representation of tropical convex sets and zero-sum stochastic games, in which tropical polyhedra correspond to deterministic games with finite action spaces. Then, we show that the winning initial positions can be determined from the associated tropical polyhedron. We obtain as a corollary a game theoretical proof of the fact that the tropical rank of a matrix, defined as the maximal size of a submatrix for which the optimal assignment problem has a unique solution, coincides with the maximal number of rows (or columns) of the matrix which are linearly independent in the tropical sense. Our proofs rely on techniques from non-linear Perron-Frobenius theory.
Robustness of Regular Graphs Based on Natural Connectivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
It has been recently proposed that the natural connectivity can be used to characterize efficiently the robustness of complex networks. The natural connectivity quantifies the redundancy of alternative routes in the network by evaluating the weighted number of closed walks of all lengths and can be seen as an average eigenvalue obtained from the graph spectrum. In this paper, we explore both analytically and numerically the natural connectivity of regular ring lattices and regular random graphs obtained through degree-preserving random rewirings from regular ring lattices. We reformulate the natural connectivity of regular ring lattices in terms of generalized Bessel functions and show that the natural connectivity of regular ring lattices is independent of network size and increases with monotonically. We also show that random regular graphs have lower natural connectivity, and are thus less robust, than regular ring lattices.

Stellar subdivisions and Stanley-Reisner rings of Gorenstein complexes
Published in Australas. J. Combin. 55 (2013), 235-247 • Search Publication
Unprojection theory aims to analyze and construct complicated commutative rings in terms of simpler ones. Our main result is that, on the algebraic level of Stanley-Reisner rings, stellar subdivisions of non-acyclic Gorenstein simplicial complexes correspond to unprojections of type Kustin-Miller. As an application, we inductively calculate the minimal graded free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to stacked polytopes, recovering results of Terai, Hibi, Herzog and Li Marzi.

On the structure of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to cyclic polytopes
Published in Osaka J. Math. 49-1 (2012), 81-100 • Search Publication
We study the structure of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to cyclic polytopes, using ideas from unprojection theory. Consider the boundary simplicial complex Delta(d,m) of the d-dimensional cyclic polytope with m vertices. We show how to express the Stanley-Reisner ring of Delta(d,m+1) in terms of the Stanley-Reisner rings of Delta(d,m) and Delta(d-2,m-1). As an application, we use the Kustin-Miller complex construction to identify the minimal graded free resolutions of these rings. In particular, we recover results of Schenzel, Terai and Hibi about their graded Betti numbers.
The biHecke monoid of a finite Coxeter group
Published in DMTCS proc AN (2010) 307-318 • View PublicationBIB
The usual combinatorial model for the 0-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group is to consider the algebra (or monoid) generated by the bubble sort operators. This construction generalizes to any finite Coxeter group W. The authors previously introduced the Hecke group algebra, constructed as the algebra generated simultaneously by the bubble sort and antisort operators, and described its representation theory. In this paper, we consider instead the monoid generated by these operators. We prove that it has |W| simple and projective modules. In order to construct a combinatorial model for the simple modules, we introduce for each w in W a combinatorial module whose support is the interval [1,w] in right weak order. This module yields an algebra, whose representation theory generalizes that of the Hecke group algebra. This involves the introduction of a w-analogue of the combinatorics of descents of W and a generalization to finite Coxeter groups of blocks of permutation matrices.

The Critical Independence Number and an Independence Decomposition
Published • View PublicationBIB
An independent set $I_c$ is a \textit{critical independent set} if $|I_c| - |N(I_c)| \geq |J| - |N(J)|$, for any independent set $J$. The \textit{critical independence number} of a graph is the cardinality of a maximum critical independent set. This number is a lower bound for the independence number and can be computed in polynomial-time. Any graph can be decomposed into two subgraphs where the independence number of one subgraph equals its critical independence number, where the critical independence number of the other subgraph is zero, and where the sum of the independence numbers of the subgraphs is the independence number of the graph. A proof of a conjecture of Graffiti.pc yields a new characterization of König-Egervary graphs: these are exactly the graphs whose independence and critical independence numbers are equal.

Uniqueness of graph square roots of girth six
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that if two graphs of girth at least 6 have isomorphic squares, then the graphs themselves are isomorphic. This is the best possible extension of the results of Ross and Harary on trees and the results of Farzad et al. on graphs of girth at least 7. We also make a remark on reconstruction of graphs from their higher powers.

Combinatorial Expressions for F-polynomials in Classical Types

We give combinatorial formulas for F-polynomials in cluster algebras of classical types in terms of the weighted paths in certain directed graphs. As a consequence we prove the positivity of F-polynomials in cluster algebras of classical types.

Caustics, counting maps and semi-classical asymptotics

This paper develops a deeper understanding of the structure and combinatorial significance of the partition function for Hermitian random matrices. The coefficients of the large N expansion of the logarithm of this partition function, also known as the genus expansion, (and its derivatives) are generating functions for a variety of graphical enumeration problems. The main results are to prove that these generating functions are in fact specific rational functions of a distinguished irrational (algebraic) function of the generating function parameters. This distinguished function is itself the generating function for the Catalan numbers (or generalized Catalan numbers, depending on the choice of parameter). It is also a solution of the inviscid Burgers equation for certain initial data. The shock formation, or caustic, of the Burgers characteristic solution is directly related to the poles of the rational forms of the generating functions. These results in turn provide new information about the asymptotics of recurrence coefficients for orthogonal polynomials with respect to exponential weights. One gains new insights into the relation between certain derivatives of the genus expansion and the asymptotic expansion of the first Painleve transcendent, related to the double-scaling limit. This work provides a precise expression of the Painleve asymptotic coefficients directly in terms of the coefficients of the partial fractions expansion of the rational form of the generating functions established here. Moreover, these insights point toward a more general program relating the first Painleve hierarchy and the higher order structure of the double-scaling limit to the specific rational structure of generating functions.

Microdynamics and Criticality of Adaptive Regulatory Networks
Published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 168701 (2010) • View PublicationBIB
We present a model of adaptive regulatory networks consisting of a simple biologically-motivated rewiring procedure coupled to an elementary stability criterion. The resulting networks exhibit a characteristic stationary heavy-tailed degree distribution, show complex structural microdynamics and self-organize to a dynamically critical state. We show analytically that the observed criticality results from the formation and breaking of transient feedback loops during the adaptive process.

The interaction of a gap with a free boundary in a two dimensional dimer system
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 302 (2011), 253-289 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\ell$ be a fixed vertical lattice line of the unit triangular lattice in the plane, and let $\Cal H$ be the half plane to the left of $\ell$. We consider lozenge tilings of $\Cal H$ that have a triangular gap of side-length two and in which $\ell$ is a free boundary - i.e., tiles are allowed to protrude out half-way across $\ell$. We prove that the correlation function of this gap near the free boundary has asymptotics $\frac{1}{4πr}$, $r\to\infty$, where $r$ is the distance from the gap to the free boundary. This parallels the electrostatic phenomenon by which the field of an electric charge near a conductor can be obtained by the method of images.

f-Vectors of Triangulated Balls
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe two methods for showing that a vector can not be the f-vector of a homology d-ball. As a consequence, we disprove a conjectured characterization of the f-vectors of balls of dimension five and higher due to Billera and Lee. We also provide a construction of triangulated balls with various f-vectors. We show that this construction obtains all possible f-vectors of three and four dimensional balls and we conjecture that this result also extends to dimension five.

Let $L$ be any integral lattice in the 2-dimensional Euclidean space. Generalizing the earlier works of Hiroshi Maehara and others, we prove that for every integer $n>0$, there is a circle in the plane $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ that passes through exactly $n$ points of $L$.

Functions of random walks on hyperplane arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many seemingly disparate Markov chains are unified when viewed as random walks on the set of chambers of a hyperplane arrangement. These include the Tsetlin library of theoretical computer science and various shuffling schemes. If only selected features of the chains are of interest, then the mixing times may change. We study the behavior of hyperplane walks, viewed on a subarrangement of a hyperplane arrangement. These include many new examples, for instance a random walk on the set of acyclic orientations of a graph. All such walks can be treated in a uniform fashion, yielding diagonalizable matrices with known eigenvalues, stationary distribution and good rates of convergence to stationarity.

A closed character formula for symmetric powers of irreducible representations
Published in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DMTCS) proceedings, 2010, 833-844 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a closed character formula for the symmetric powers $S^N V(λ)$ of a fixed irreducible representation $V(λ)$ of a complex semi-simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ by means of partial fraction decomposition. The formula involves rational functions in rank of $\mathfrak{g}$ many variables which are easier to determine than the weight multiplicities of $S^N V(λ)$ themselves. We compute those rational functions in some interesting cases. Furthermore, we introduce a residue-type generating function for the weight multiplicities of $S^N V(λ)$ and explain the connections between our character formula, vector partition functions and iterated partial fraction decomposition.

Polynomials Related to Harmonic Numbers and Evaluation of Harmonic Number Series I

We discuss their generalizations and show that these new families of polynomials and their generalizations are useful to obtain closed forms of some series related to harmonic numbers.

Nonzero coefficients in restrictions and tensor products of supercharacters of $U_n(q)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The standard supercharacter theory of the finite unipotent upper-triangular matrices $U_n(q)$ gives rise to a beautiful combinatorics based on set partitions. As with the representation theory of the symmetric group, embeddings of $U_m(q)\subseteq U_n(q)$ for $m\leq n$ lead to branching rules. Diaconis and Isaacs established that the restriction of a supercharacter of $U_n(q)$ is a nonnegative integer linear combination of supercharacters of $U_m(q)$ (in fact, it is polynomial in $q$). In a first step towards understanding the combinatorics of coefficients in the branching rules of the supercharacters of $U_n(q)$, this paper characterizes when a given coefficient is nonzero in the restriction of a supercharacter and the tensor product of two supercharacters. These conditions are given uniformly in terms of complete matchings in bipartite graphs.
