In this paper we report on results of our investigation into the algebraic structure supported by the combinatorial geometry of the cyclohedron. Our new graded algebra structures lie between two well known Hopf algebras: the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra of permutations and the Loday-Ronco algebra of binary trees. Connecting algebra maps arise from a new generalization of the Tonks projection from the permutohedron to the associahedron, which we discover via the viewpoint of the graph associahedra of Carr and Devadoss. At the same time that viewpoint allows exciting geometrical insights into the multiplicative structure of the algebras involved. Extending the Tonks projection also reveals a new graded algebra structure on the simplices. Finally this latter is extended to a new graded Hopf algebra (one-sided) with basis all the faces of the simplices.

We determine the characters of the simple composition factors and the submodule lattices of certain Weyl modules for classical groups. The results have several applications. The simple modules arise in the study of incidence systems in finite geometries and knowledge of their dimensions yields the $p$-ranks of these incidence systems.

We prove that the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics for random k-colorings of the complete tree with branching factor b undergoes a phase transition at $k=b(1+o_b(1))/\ln{b}$. Our main result shows nearly sharp bounds on the mixing time of the dynamics on the complete tree with n vertices for $k=Cb/\ln{b}$ colors with constant C. For $C\geq1$ we prove the mixing time is $O(n^{1+o_b(1)}\ln{n})$. On the other side, for $C<1$ the mixing time experiences a slowing down; in particular, we prove it is $O(n^{1/C+o_b(1)}\ln{n})$ and $Ω(n^{1/C-o_b(1)})$. The critical point C=1 is interesting since it coincides (at least up to first order) with the so-called reconstruction threshold which was recently established by Sly. The reconstruction threshold has been of considerable interest recently since it appears to have close connections to the efficiency of certain local algorithms, and this work was inspired by our attempt to understand these connections in this particular setting.

Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices with $r := \lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ and let $λ_1 \geq...\geq λ_{n} $ be adjacency eigenvalues of $G$. Then the Hückel energy of $G$, HE($G$), is defined as $$\he(G) = {ll}
2\sum_{i=1}^{r} λ_i, & \hbox{if $n= 2r$;}
2\sum_{i=1}^{r} λ_i + λ_{r+1}, & \hbox{if $n= 2r+1$.}
$$ The concept of Hückel energy was introduced by Coulson as it gives a good approximation for the $π$-electron energy of molecular graphs. We obtain two upper bounds and a lower bound for HE$(G)$. When $n$ is even, it is shown that equality holds in both upper bounds if and only if $G$ is a strongly regular graph with parameters $(n, k, λ, μ) = (4t^2 +4t +2, 2t^2 +3t +1, t^2 +2t, t^2 + 2t +1),$ for positive integer $t$. Furthermore, we will give an infinite family of these strongly regular graph whose construction was communicated by Willem Haemers to us. He attributes the construction to J.J. Seidel.

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph and let $r\ge 1$ be an integer. For a set $D \subseteq V$, define $N_r[x] = \{y \in V: d(x, y) \leq r\}$ and $D_r(x) = N_r[x] \cap D$, where $d(x,y)$ denotes the number of edges in any shortest path between $x$ and $y$. $D$ is known as an $r$-identifying code ($r$-locating-dominating set, respectively), if for all vertices $x\in V$ ($x \in V\backslash D$, respectively), $D_r(x)$ are all nonempty and different. In this paper, we provide complete results for $r$-identifying codes in paths and odd cycles; we also give complete results for 2-locating-dominating sets in cycles.
On the boolean-width of a graph: structure and applications

We study the recently introduced boolean-width of graphs. Our structural results are as follows. Firstly, we show that almost surely the boolean-width of a random graph on $n$ vertices is $O(\log^2 n)$, and it is easy to find the corresponding decomposition tree.
Secondly, for any constant $d$ a graph of maximum degree $d$ has boolean-width linear in treewidth. This implies that almost surely the boolean-width of a (sparse) random $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices is linear in $n$.
Thirdly, we show that the boolean-cut value is well approximated by VC dimension of corresponding set system. Since VC dimension is widely studied, we hope that this structural result will prove helpful in better understanding of boolean-width.
Combining our first structural result with algorithms from Bui-Xuan et al \cite{BTV09,BTV09II} we get for random graphs quasi-polynomial $O^*(2^{O(\log ^4 n)})$ time algorithms for a large class of vertex subset and vertex partitioning problems.

Motivated by the Caccetta-Haggkvist Conjecture, we prove that every digraph on n vertices with minimum outdegree 0.3465n contains an oriented triangle. This improves the bound of 0.3532n of Hamburger, Haxell and Kostochka. The main new tool we use in our proof is the theory of flag algebras developed recently by Razborov.

In this paper, we partially solve an open problem, due to J.C. Molluzzo in 1976, on the existence of balanced Steinhaus triangles modulo a positive integer $n$, that are Steinhaus triangles containing all the elements of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ with the same multiplicity. For every odd number $n$, we build an orbit in $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, by the linear cellular automaton generating the Pascal triangle modulo $n$, which contains infinitely many balanced Steinhaus triangles. This orbit, in $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, is obtained from an integer sequence called the universal sequence. We show that there exist balanced Steinhaus triangles for at least $2/3$ of the admissible sizes, in the case where $n$ is an odd prime power. Other balanced Steinhaus figures, such as Steinhaus trapezoids, generalized Pascal triangles, Pascal trapezoids or lozenges, also appear in the orbit of the universal sequence modulo $n$ odd. We prove the existence of balanced generalized Pascal triangles for at least $2/3$ of the admissible sizes, in the case where $n$ is an odd prime power, and the existence of balanced lozenges for all admissible sizes, in the case where $n$ is a square-free odd number.
On the Facets of the Secondary Polytope

The secondary polytope of a point configuration A is a polytope whose face poset is isomorphic to the poset of all regular subdivisions of A. While the vertices of the secondary polytope - corresponding to the triangulations of A - are very well studied, there is not much known about the facets of the secondary polytope. The splits of a polytope, subdivisions with exactly two maximal faces, are the simplest examples of such facets and the first that were systematically investigated. The present paper can be seen as a continuation of these studies and as a starting point of an examination of the subdivisions corresponding to the facets of the secondary polytope in general. As a special case, the notion of k-split is introduced as a possibility to classify polytopes in accordance to the complexity of the facets of their secondary polytopes. An application to matroid subdivisions of hypersimplices and tropical geometry is given.

A dynamic coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper coloring such that for every vertex $v\in V(G)$ of degree at least 2, the neighbors of $v$ receive at least 2 colors. In this paper we present some upper bounds for the dynamic chromatic number of graphs. In this regard, we shall show that there is a constant $c$ such that for every $k$-regular graph $G$, $χ_d(G)\leq χ(G)+ c\ln k +1$. Also, we introduce an upper bound for the dynamic list chromatic number of regular graphs.

The similar sublattices of a planar lattice can be classified via its multiplier ring. The latter is the ring of rational integers in the generic case, and an order in an imaginary quadratic field otherwise. Several classes of examples are discussed, with special emphasis on concrete results. In particular, we derive Dirichlet series generating functions for the number of distinct similar sublattices of a given index, and relate them to various zeta functions of orders in imaginary quadratic fields.

Necessary condition to have Hamiltonian cycle in planar graph is given. Examples of regular planar graphs degree three without Hamiltonian cycle are built.

We introduce a new class of countably infinite random geometric graphs, whose vertices are points in a metric space, and vertices are adjacent independently with probability p if the metric distance between the vertices is below a given threshold. If the vertex set is a countable dense set in R^n equipped with the metric derived from the L_{\infty}-norm, then it is shown that with probability 1 such infinite random geometric graphs have a unique isomorphism type. The isomorphism type, which we call GR_n, is characterized by a geometric analogue of the existentially closed adjacency property, and we give a deterministic construction of GR_n. In contrast, we show that infinite random geometric graphs in R^2 with the Euclidean metric are not necessarily isomorphic.
Commuting graphs of odd prime order elements in simple groups

Let $F$ denote a field and let $V$ denote a vector space over $F$ with finite positive dimension. We consider a pair of linear transformations $A:V \to V$ and $A^*:V \to V$ that satisfy the following conditions: (i) each of $A,A^*$ is diagonalizable; (ii) there exists an ordering $\{V_i\}_{i=0}^d$ of the eigenspaces of $A$ such that $A^* V_i \subseteq V_{i-1} + V_{i} + V_{i+1}$ for $0 \leq i \leq d$, where $V_{-1}=0$ and $V_{d+1}=0$; (iii) there exists an ordering $\{V^*_i\}_{i=0}^δ$ of the eigenspaces of $A^*$ such that $A V^*_i \subseteq V^*_{i-1} + V^*_{i} + V^*_{i+1}$ for $0 \leq i \leq δ$, where $V^*_{-1}=0$ and $V^*_{δ+1}=0$; (iv) there is no subspace $W$ of $V$ such that $AW \subseteq W$, $A^* W \subseteq W$, $W \neq 0$, $W \neq V$. We call such a pair a {\it tridiagonal pair} on $V$. It is known that $d=δ$ and for $0 \leq i \leq d$ the dimensions of $V_i$, $V_{d-i}$, $V^*_i$, $V^*_{d-i}$ coincide. We say the pair $A,A^*$ is {\it sharp} whenever $\dim V_0=1$. It is known that if $F$ is algebraically closed then $A,A^*$ is sharp. A conjectured classification of the sharp tridiagonal pairs was recently introduced by T. Ito and the second author. We present a result which supports the conjecture. Given scalars $\{þ_i\}_{i=0}^d$, $\{þ^*_i\}_{i=0}^d$ in $F$ that satisfy the known constraints on the eigenvalues of a tridiagonal pair, we define an $F$-algebra $T$ by generators and relations. We consider the algebra $e^*_0Te^*_0$ for a certain idempotent $e^*_0 \in T$. Let $R$ denote the polynomial algebra over $F$ involving $d$ variables.We display a surjective algebra homomorphism $μ: R \to e^*_0Te^*_0$. We conjecture that $μ$ is an isomorphism. We show that this $μ$-conjecture implies the classification conjecture, and that the $μ$-conjecture holds for $d\leq 5$.

Duistermaat and van der Kallen show that there is no nontrivial complex Laurent polynomial all of whose powers have a zero constant term. Inspired by this, Sturmfels posed two questions: Do the constant terms of a generic Laurent polynomial form a regular sequence? If so, then what is the degree of the associated zero-dimensional ideal? In this note, we prove that the Eulerian numbers provide the answer to the second question. The proof involves reinterpreting the problem in terms of toric geometry.

Green-Tao theorem in function fields
We adapt the proof of the Green-Tao theorem on arithmetic progressions in primes to the setting of polynomials over a finite field, to show that for every $k$, the irreducible polynomials in $\mathbf{F}_q[t]$ contain configurations of the form $\{f+ Pg : \d(P)<k \}, g \neq 0$.

We establish a polynomial recursion formula for linear Hodge integrals. It is obtained as the Laplace transform of the cut-and-join equation for the simple Hurwitz numbers. We show that the recursion recovers the Witten-Kontsevich theorem when restricted to the top degree terms, and also the combinatorial factor of the lambda_g formula as the lowest degree terms.
