Identities Derived from Noncrossing Partitions of Type B
Published • View PublicationBIB
Based on weighted noncrossing partitions of type B, we obtain type B analogues of Coker's identities on the Narayana polynomials. A parity reversing involution is given for the alternating sum of Narayana numbers of type B. Moreover, we find type B analogues of the refinements of Coker's identities due to Chen, Deutsch and Elizalde. By combinatorial constructions, we provide type B analogues of three identities of Mansour and Sun also on the Narayana polynomials.

A short proof of Cayley's tree formula
Published in American Mathematical Monthly, 125(2018), no. 1,65-68 • View PublicationBIB
We give a short proof of Cayley's tree formula for counting the number of different labeled trees on $n$ vertices. The following nonlinear recursive relation for the number of labeled trees on $n$ vertices is deduced from a combinatorial argument, $$ T_n = \frac{n}{2} \sum_{k=0}^{n-2} \left ( \begin {array} {c} n-2 \\ k \end {array} \right ) T_{k+1} T_{n-k-1}; \ \ for \ n > 1 \ and \ T_1 = 1, $$ and then it is proved that $T_n = n^{n-2}$, which gives yet another proof of the celebrated Cayley's tree formula.
Ladder Operators and Endomorphisms in Combinatorial Physics
Published in DMTCS 12, 2 (2010) 1 • Search Publication
Starting with the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra, fundamental to quantum physics, we first show how the ordering of the non-commuting operators intrinsic to that algebra gives rise to generalizations of the classical Stirling Numbers of Combinatorics. These may be expressed in terms of infinite, but {\em row-finite}, matrices, which may also be considered as endomorphisms of $\C[[x]]$. This leads us to consider endomorphisms in more general spaces, and these in turn may be expressed in terms of generalizations of the ladder-operators familiar in physics.

Random permutations with cycle weights
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2011, Vol. 21, No. 1, 312-331 • View PublicationBIB
We study the distribution of cycle lengths in models of nonuniform random permutations with cycle weights. We identify several regimes. Depending on the weights, the length of typical cycles grows like the total number $n$ of elements, or a fraction of $n$ or a logarithmic power of $n$.

Admissible Pictures and Littlewood-Richardson Crystals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a one-to-one correspondence between the set of admissible pictures and the Littlewood-Richardson crystals. As a simple consequence, we shall show that the set of pictures does not depend on the choice of admissible orders.

Weighted Graph Colorings
Published in J. Stat. Phys. 138, 496-542 (2010) • View PublicationBIB
We study two weighted graph coloring problems, in which one assigns $q$ colors to the vertices of a graph such that adjacent vertices have different colors, with a vertex weighting $w$ that either disfavors or favors a given color. We exhibit a weighted chromatic polynomial $Ph(G,q,w)$ associated with this problem that generalizes the chromatic polynomial $P(G,q)$. General properties of this polynomial are proved, and illustrative calculations for various families of graphs are presented. We show that the weighted chromatic polynomial is able to distinguish between certain graphs that yield the same chromatic polynomial. We give a general structural formula for $Ph(G,q,w)$ for lattice strip graphs $G$ with periodic longitudinal boundary conditions. The zeros of $Ph(G,q,w)$ in the $q$ and $w$ planes and their accumulation sets in the limit of infinitely many vertices of $G$ are analyzed. Finally, some related weighted graph coloring problems are mentioned.

Threshold graph limits and random threshold graphs

We study the limit theory of large threshold graphs and apply this to a variety of models for random threshold graphs. The results give a nice set of examples for the emerging theory of graph limits.

Descent polynomials for permutations with bounded drop size
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by juggling sequences and bubble sort, we examine permutations on the set {1,2,...,n} with d descents and maximum drop size k. We give explicit formulas for enumerating such permutations for given integers k and d. We also derive the related generating functions and prove unimodality and symmetry of the coefficients.

Promotion operator on rigged configurations of type A
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 17(1) (2010) R24 • View PublicationBIB
Recently, the analogue of the promotion operator on crystals of type A under a generalization of the bijection of Kerov, Kirillov and Reshetikhin between crystals (or Littlewood--Richardson tableaux) and rigged configurations was proposed. In this paper, we give a proof of this conjecture. This shows in particular that the bijection between tensor products of type A_n^{(1)} crystals and (unrestricted) rigged configurations is an affine crystal isomorphism.

Symmetric Subgroup Actions on Isotropic Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be the group preserving a nondegenerate sesquilinear form on a vector space V, and H a symmetric subgroup of G of the type G1 x G2. We explicitly parameterize the H-orbits in the Grassmannian of r-dimensional isotropic subspaces of V by a complete set of H-invariants. We describe the Bruhat order in terms of the majorization relationship over a diagram of these H-invariants. The inclusion order, the stabilizer, the orbit dimension, the open H-orbits, the decompositions of an H orbit into H\cap G_0 and H_0 orbits are also explicitly described.

Dual partially harmonic tensors and Brauer-Schur-Weyl duality
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $V$ be a $2m$-dimensional symplectic vector space over an algebraically closed field $K$. Let $\mbb_n^{(f)}$ be the two-sided ideal of the Brauer algebra $\mbb_n(-2m)$ over $K$ generated by $e_1e_3... e_{2f-1}$, where $0\leq f\leq [n/2]$. Let $\mathcal{HT}_{f}^{\otimes n}$ be the subspace of partially harmonic tensors of valence $f$ in $V^{\otimes n}$. In this paper, we prove that $\dim\mathcal{HT}_f^{\otimes n}$ and $\dim\End_{KSp(V)}\Bigl(V^{\otimes n}/V^{\otimes n}\mbb_n^{(f)}\Bigr)$ are both independent of $K$, and the natural homomorphism from $\mbb_n(-2m)/\mbb_n^{(f)}$ to $\End_{KSp(V)}\Bigl(V^{\otimes n}/V^{\otimes n}\mbb_n^{(f)}\Bigr)$ is always surjective. We show that $\mathcal{HT}_{f}^{\otimes n}$ has a Weyl filtration and is isomorphic to the dual of $V^{\otimes n}\mbb_n^{(f)}/V^{\otimes n}\mbb_n^{(f+1)}$ as a $Sp(V)$-$(\mbb_n(-2m)/\mbb_n^{(f+1)})$-bimodule. We obtain a $Sp(V)$-$\mbb_n$-bimodules filtration of $V^{\otimes n}$ such that each successive quotient is isomorphic to some $\nabla(\lam)\otimes z_{g,\lam}\mbb_n$ with $\lam\vdash n-2g$, $\ell(\lam)\leq m$ and $0\leq g\leq [n/2]$, where $\nabla(\lam)$ is the co-Weyl module associated to $\lam$ and $z_{g,\lam}$ is an explicitly constructed maximal vector of weight $\lam$. As a byproduct, we show that each right $\mbb_n$-module $z_{g,\lam}\mbb_n$ is integrally defined and stable under base change.

On Distance-Regular Graphs with Smallest Eigenvalue at Least $-m$
Published • View PublicationBIB
A non-complete geometric distance-regular graph is the point graph of a partial geometry in which the set of lines is a set of Delsarte cliques. In this paper, we prove that for fixed integer $m\geq 2$, there are only finitely many non-geometric distance-regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least $-m$, diameter at least three and intersection number $c_2 \geq 2$.
The Mahonian probability distribution on words is asymptotically normal
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Mahonian statistic is the number of inversions in a permutation of a multiset with $a_i$ elements of type $i$, $1\le i\le m$. The counting function for this statistic is the $q$ analog of the multinomial coefficient $\binom{a_1+...+a_m}{a_1,... a_m}$, and the probability generating function is the normalization of the latter. We give two proofs that the distribution is asymptotically normal. The first is {\it computer-assisted}, based on the method of moments. The Maple package {\tt MahonianStat}, available from the webpage of this article, can be used by the reader to perform experiments and calculations. Our second proof uses characteristic functions. We then take up the study of a local limit theorem to accompany our central limit theorem. Here our result is less general, and we must be content with a conjecture about further work. Our local limit theorem permits us to conclude that the coeffiecients of the $q$-multinomial are log-concave, provided one stays near the center (where the largest coefficients reside.)

Sparse stable configurations of hard discs in a box
We construct stable configurations of n overlapping discs of radius r in a unit square, with r = O(1/n). By a result of Diaconis, Lebeau, and Michel, this result is best possible, up to a constant factor. A consequence is that the Metropolis algorithm, a well-studied Markov chain on the hardcore model, is not irreducible in this range of parameters.

Strong embeddings of minimum genus
Published in Discrete Math. 310 (2010) 2595-2599 • View PublicationBIB
A "folklore conjecture, probably due to Tutte" (as described in [P.D. Seymour, Sums of circuits, Graph theory and related topics (Proc. Conf., Univ. Waterloo, 1977), pp. 341-355, Academic Press, 1979]) asserts that every bridgeless cubic graph can be embedded on a surface of its own genus in such a way that the face boundaries are cycles of the graph. In this paper we consider closed 2-cell embeddings of graphs and show that certain (cubic) graphs (of any fixed genus) have closed 2-cell embedding only in surfaces whose genus is very large (proportional to the order of these graphs), thus providing plethora of strong counterexamples to the above conjecture. The main result yielding such counterexamples may be of independent interest.

Gotzmann Edge Ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let P = k[x_1, ..., x_n] be the polynomial ring in n variables. A homogeneous ideal I of P generated in degree d is called Gotzmann if it has the smallest possible Hilbert function out of all homogeneous ideals with the same dimension in degree d. The edge ideal of a simple graph G on vertices x_1, ..., x_n is the quadratic square-free monomial ideal generated by all x_i x_j where {x_i,x_j} is an edge of G. The only edge ideals that are Gotzmann are those edge ideals corresponding to star graphs.
Cellular spanning trees and Laplacians of cubical complexes
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 46 (2011), 247--274 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a Matrix-Tree Theorem enumerating the spanning trees of a cell complex in terms of the eigenvalues of its cellular Laplacian operators, generalizing a previous result for simplicial complexes. As an application, we obtain explicit formulas for spanning tree enumerators and Laplacian eigenvalues of cubes; the latter are integers. We prove a weighted version of the eigenvalue formula, providing evidence for a conjecture on weighted enumeration of cubical spanning trees. We introduce a cubical analogue of shiftedness, and obtain a recursive formula for the Laplacian eigenvalues of shifted cubical complexes, in particular, these eigenvalues are also integers. Finally, we recover Adin's enumeration of spanning trees of a complete colorful simplicial complex from the cellular Matrix-Tree Theorem together with a result of Kook, Reiner and Stanton.

An insertion algorithm for catabolizability
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by our recent work relating canonical bases to combinatorics of Garsia-Procesi modules \cite{B}, we give an insertion algorithm that computes the catabolizability of the insertion tableau of a standard word. This allows us to characterize catabolizability as the statistic on words invariant under Knuth transformations, certain (co)rotations, and a new operation called a catabolism transformation. We also prove a Greene's Theorem-like characterization of catabolizability, and a result about how cocyclage changes catabolizability, strengthening a similar result in \cite{SW}.

Combinatorial Polytope Enumeration
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe a provably complete algorithm for the generation of a tight, possibly exact superset of all combinatorially distinct simple n-facet polytopes in R^d, along with their graphs, f-vectors, and face lattices. The technique applies repeated cutting planes and planar sweeps to a d-simplex. Our generator has implications for several outstanding problems in polytope theory, including conjectures about the number of distinct polytopes, the edge expansion of polytopal graphs, and the d-step conjecture.

Asymptotic shapes with free boundaries

We study limit shapes for dimer models on domains of the hexagonal lattice with free boundary conditions. This is equivalent to the large deviation phenomenon for a random stepped surface over domains fixed only at part of the boundary.
