Graph classes with given 3-connected components: asymptotic enumeration and random graphs
Consider a family $\mathcal{T}$ of 3-connected graphs of moderate growth, and let $\mathcal{G}$ be the class of graphs whose 3-connected components are graphs in $\mathcal{T}$. We present a general framework for analyzing such graphs classes based on singularity analysis of generating functions, which generalizes previously studied cases such as planar graphs and series-parallel graphs. We provide a general result for the asymptotic number of graphs in $\mathcal{G}$, based on the singularities of the exponential generating function associated to $\mathcal{T}$. We derive limit laws, which are either normal or Poisson, for several basic parameters, including the number of edges, number of blocks and number of components. For the size of the largest block we find a fundamental dichotomy: classes similar to planar graphs have almost surely a unique block of linear size, while classes similar to series-parallel graphs have only sublinear blocks. This dichotomy also applies to the size of the largest 3-connected component. For some classes under study both regimes occur, because of a critical phenomenon as the edge density in the class varies.
Refined enumerations of alternating sign matrices: monotone (d,m)-trapezoids with prescribed top and bottom row

Monotone triangles are plane integer arrays of triangular shape with certain monotonicity conditions along rows and diagonals. Their significance is mainly due to the fact that they correspond to $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices when prescribing $(1,2,...,n)$ as bottom row of the array. We define monotone $(d,m)$--trapezoids as monotone triangles with $m$ rows where the $d-1$ top rows are removed. (These objects are also equivalent to certain partial alternating sign matrices.) It is known that the number of monotone triangles with bottom row $(k_1,...,k_n)$ is given by a polynomial $α(n;k_1,...,k_n)$ in the $k_i$'s. The main purpose of this paper is to show that the number of monotone $(d,m)$--trapezoids with prescribed top and bottom row appears as a coefficient in the expansion of a specialization of $α(n;k_1,...,k_n)$ with respect to a certain polynomial basis. This settles a generalization of a recent conjecture of Romik and the author. Among other things, the result is used to express the number of monotone triangles with bottom row $(1,2,...,i-1,i+1,...,j-1,j+1,...,n)$ (which is, by the standard bijection, also the number of $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices with given top two rows) in terms of the number of $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices with prescribed top and bottom row, and, by a formula of Stroganov for the latter numbers, to provide an explicit formula for the first numbers. (A formula of this type was first derived by Karklinsky and Romik using the relation of alternating sign matrices to the six--vertex model.)

We introduce a family of tableaux that simultaneously generalizes the tableaux used to characterize Grothendieck polynomials and k-Schur functions. We prove that the polynomials drawn from these tableaux are the affine Grothendieck polynomials and k-K-Schur functions -- Schubert representatives for the K-theory of affine Grassmannians and their dual in the nil Hecke ring. We prove a number of combinatorial properties including Pieri rules.

Suppose that A is a set of n real numbers, each at least 1 apart. Define the ``perturbed sum and product sets'' S and P to be the sums a + b + f(a,b) and products (a+g(a,b))(b+h(a,b)), where f, g, and h satisfy certain upper bounds in terms of the n, |a| and |b|. We develop almost best possible lower bounds on |P| + |S|, using the largest possible sizes of the ``perturbation parameters'' f(a,b), g(a,b) and h(a,b). Our proof uses Elekes's idea for bounding |A+A|+|A.A| from below, in combination with the Szemeredi-Trotter curve theorem (actually, a minor generalization of it) of Szekely, applied to certain polygonal arcs.
Limit process of stationary TASEP near the characteristic line

The totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) on Z with the Bernoulli-rho measure as initial conditions, 0<rho<1, is stationary. It is known that along the characteristic line, the current fluctuates as of order t^{1/3}. The limiting distribution has also been obtained explicitly. In this paper we determine the limiting multi-point distribution of the current fluctuations moving away from the characteristics by the order t^{2/3}. The main tool is the analysis of a related directed last percolation model. We also discuss the process limit in tandem queues in equilibrium.

We show that any binary $(n=2^m-3, 2^{n-m}, 3)$ code $C_1$ is a part of an equitable partition (perfect coloring) $\{C_1,C_2,C_3,C_4\}$ of the $n$-cube with the parameters $((0,1,n-1,0)(1,0,n-1,0)(1,1,n-4,2)(0,0,n-1,1))$. Now the possibility to lengthen the code $C_1$ to a 1-perfect code of length $n+2$ is equivalent to the possibility to split the part $C_4$ into two distance-3 codes or, equivalently, to the biparticity of the graph of distances 1 and 2 of $C_4$. In any case, $C_1$ is uniquely embeddable in a twofold 1-perfect code of length $n+2$ with some structural restrictions, where by a twofold 1-perfect code we mean that any vertex of the space is within radius 1 from exactly two codewords.

We introduce the antipodal pairs property for probability measures on finite Boolean algebras and prove that conditional versions imply strong forms of log-concavity. We give several applications of this fact, including improvements of some results of Wagner; a new proof of a theorem of Liggett stating that ultra-log-concavity of sequences is preserved by convolutions; and some progress on a well-known log-concavity conjecture of J. Mason.

We prove an extension of the Regularity Lemma with vertex and edge weights which can be applied for a large class of graphs. The applications involve random graphs and a weighted version of the Erdős-Stone theorem. We also provide means to handle the otherwise uncontrolled exceptional set.

Resorting to the recursions satisfied by the polynomials which converge to the right hand sides of the Rogers-Ramanujan type identities given by Sills and a determinant method presented in a paper by Ismail-Prodinger-Stanton, we obtain many new one-parameter generalizations of the Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, such as a generalization of the analytic versions of the first and second Göllnitz-Gordon partition identities, and generalizations of the first, second, and third Rogers-Selberg identities.
Longest convex chains

Assume $X_n$ is a random sample of $n$ uniform, independent points from a triangle $T$. The longest convex chain, $Y$, of $X_n$ is defined naturally. The length $|Y|$ of $Y$ is a random variable, denoted by $L_n$. In this article, we determine the order of magnitude of the expectation of $L_n$. We show further that $L_n$ is highly concentrated around its mean, and that the longest convex chains have a limit shape.
Relative Edge Density of the Underlying Graphs Based on Proportional-Edge Proximity Catch Digraphs for Testing Bivariate Spatial Patterns (Technical Report)
The use of data-random graphs in statistical testing of spatial patterns is introduced recently. In this approach, a random directed graph is constructed from the data using the relative positions of the points from various classes. Different random graphs result from different definitions of the proximity region associated with each data point and different graph statistics can be employed for pattern testing. The approach used in this article is based on underlying graphs of a family of data-random digraphs which is determined by a family of parameterized proximity maps. The relative edge density of the AND- and OR-underlying graphs is used as the summary statistic, providing an alternative to the relative arc density and domination number of the digraph employed previously. Properly scaled, relative edge density of the underlying graphs is a U-statistic, facilitating analytic study of its asymptotic distribution using standard U-statistic central limit theory. The approach is illustrated with an application to the testing of bivariate spatial clustering patterns of segregation and association. Knowledge of the asymptotic distribution allows evaluation of the Pitman asymptotic efficiency, hence selection of the proximity map parameter to optimize efficiency. Asymptotic efficiency and Monte Carlo simulation analysis indicate that the AND-underlying version is better (in terms of power and efficiency) for the segregation alternative, while the OR-underlying version is better for the association alternative. The approach presented here is also valid for data in higher dimensions.

We prove a conjecture of Dukes and Herke concerning the possible orders of a basis for the cyclic group Z_n, namely : For each k \in N there exists a constant c_k > 0 such that, for all n \in N, if A \subseteq Z_n is a basis of order greater than n/k, then the order of A is within c_k of n/l for some integer l \in [1,k]. The proof makes use of various results in additive number theory concerning the growth of sumsets.
Random $k$-noncrossing RNA Structures

In this paper we derive polynomial time algorithms that generate random $k$-noncrossing matchings and $k$-noncrossing RNA structures with uniform probability. Our approach employs the bijection between $k$-noncrossing matchings and oscillating tableaux and the $P$-recursiveness of the cardinalities of $k$-noncrossing matchings. The main idea is to consider the tableaux sequences as paths of stochastic processes over shapes and to derive their transition probabilities.

Given integers $a_1, a_2, ..., a_n$, with $a_1 + a_2 + ... + a_n \geq 1$, a symmetrically constrained composition $λ_1 + lambda_2 + ... + lambda_n = M$ of $M$ into $n$ nonnegative parts is one that satisfies each of the the $n!$ constraints
${\sum_{i=1}^n a_i λ_{π(i)} \geq 0 : π\in S_n}$. We show how to compute the generating function of these compositions, combining methods from partition theory, permutation statistics, and lattice-point enumeration.
Twisted duality for embedded graphs

We consider two operations on an edge of an embedded graph (or equivalently a ribbon graph): giving a half-twist to the edge and taking the partial dual with respect to the edge. These two operations give rise to an action of S_3^{|E(G)|}, the ribbon group, on G. The action of the ribbon group on embedded graphs extends the concepts of duality, partial duality and Petrie duality. We show that this ribbon group action gives a complete characterization of duality in that if G is any cellularly embedded graph with medial graph G_m, then the orbit of G under the group action is precisely the set of all graphs with medial graphs isomorphic (as abstract graphs) to G_m. We provide characterizations of special sets of twisted duals, such as the partial duals, of embedded graphs in terms of medial graphs and we show how different kinds of graph isomorphism give rise to these various notions of duality. The ribbon group action then leads to a deeper understanding of the properties of, and relationships among, various graph polynomials via the generalized transition polynomial which interacts naturally with the ribbon group action.
On weight distributions of perfect colorings and completely regular codes

A vertex coloring of a graph is called "perfect" if for any two colors $a$ and $b$, the number of the color-$b$ neighbors of a color-$a$ vertex $x$ does not depend on the choice of $x$, that is, depends only on $a$ and $b$ (the corresponding partition of the vertex set is known as "equitable"). A set of vertices is called "completely regular" if the coloring according to the distance from this set is perfect. By the "weight distribution" of some coloring with respect to some set we mean the information about the number of vertices of every color at every distance from the set. We study the weight distribution of a perfect coloring (equitable partition) of a graph with respect to a completely regular set (in particular, with respect to a vertex if the graph is distance-regular). We show how to compute this distribution by the knowledge of the color composition over the set. For some partial cases of completely regular sets, we derive explicit formulas of weight distributions. Since any (other) completely regular set itself generates a perfect coloring, this gives universal formulas for calculating the weight distribution of any completely regular set from its parameters. In the case of Hamming graphs, we prove a very simple formula for the weight enumerator of an arbitrary perfect coloring. Codewords: completely regular code; equitable partition; partition design; perfect coloring; perfect structure; regular partition; weight distribution; weight enumerator.

For extra-large Coxeter systems (m(s,r)>3), we construct a natural and explicit set of Soergel bimodules D={D_w}_{w\in W} such that each D_w contains as a direct summand (or is equal to) the indecomposable Soergel bimodule B_w. When decategorified, we prove that D gives rise to a set {d_w}_{w\in W} that is actually a basis of the Hecke algebra. This basis is close to the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis and satisfies a ``positivity condition''.
