Two Enumerative Results on Cycles of Permutations

Answering a question of Bona, it is shown that for n>1 the probability that 1 and 2 are in the same cycle of a product of two n-cycles on the set {1,2,...,n} is 1/2 if n is odd and 1/2 - 2/(n-1){n+2) if n is even. Another result concerns the generating function P_h(q) for the number of cycles of the product (1,2,...,n)w, where w ranges over all permutations of 1,2,...,n of cycle type h. A formula is obtained for P_h(q) from which it is proved that the zeros of P_h(q) have real part 0.

Fix $r \ge 2$ and a collection of $r$-uniform hypergraphs $\cH$. What is the minimum number of edges in an $\cH$-free $r$-uniform hypergraph with chromatic number greater than $k$. We investigate this question for various $\cH$. Our results include the following:
An $(r,l)$-system is an $r$-uniform hypergraph with every two edges sharing at most $l$ vertices. For $k$ sufficiently large, the minimum number of edges in an $(r,l)$-system with chromatic number greater than $k$ is at most $c(k^{r-1}\log k)^{l/(l-1)}$, where $$c<...$$ This improves on the previous best bounds of Kostochka-Mubayi-Rödl-Tetali \cite{KMRT}. The upper bound is sharp aside from the constant $c$ as shown in \cite{KMRT}.
The minimum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph with independent neighborhoods and chromatic number greater than $k$ is of order $\tilde k^{r+1/(r-1)}$ as $k \to \infty$. This generalizes (aside from logarithmic factors) a result of Gimbel and Thomassen \cite{GT} for triangle-free graphs.
Let $T$ be an $r$-uniform hypertree of $t$ edges. Then every $T$-free $r$-uniform hypergraph has chromatic number at most $p(t)$, where $p(t)$ is a polynomial in $t$. This generalizes the well known fact that every $T$-free graph has chromatic number at most $t$.
Several open problems and conjectures are also posed.
The cut metric, random graphs, and branching processes

In this paper we study the component structure of random graphs with independence between the edges. Under mild assumptions, we determine whether there is a giant component, and find its asymptotic size when it exists. We assume that the sequence of matrices of edge probabilities converges to an appropriate limit object (a kernel), but only in a very weak sense, namely in the cut metric. Our results thus generalize previous results on the phase transition in the already very general inhomogeneous random graph model we introduced recently, as well as related results of Bollobás, Borgs, Chayes and Riordan, all of which involve considerably stronger assumptions. We also prove corresponding results for random hypergraphs; these generalize our results on the phase transition in inhomogeneous random graphs with clustering.
Distribution of Random Variables on the Symmetric Group
The well known Erdos-Turan law states that the logarithm of an order of a random permutation is asymptotically normally distributed. The aim of this work is to estimate convergence rate in this theorem and also to prove analogous result for distribution of the logarithm of an order of a random permutation on a certain class of subsets of the symmetric group. We also study the asymptotic behavior of the mean values of multiplicative functions on the symmetric group and the results we obtain are of independent interest besides their application to the investigation of the remainder term in the Erdos-Turan law.
We also study a related problem of distribution of the degree of a splitting field of a random polynomial and obtain sharp estimates for its convergence rate to normal law.
In research we apply both probabilistic and analytic methods. Some analytic methods used here have their origins in the probabilistic number theory, and some have their roots in the theory of summation of divergent series. One of the approaches we use is to apply Tauberian type estimates for Voronoi summability of divergent series to analyze the generating functions of the mean values of multiplicative functions.
A Tight Estimate for Decoding Error-Probability of LT Codes Using Kovalenko's Rank Distribution
A new approach for estimating the Decoding Error-Probability (DEP) of LT codes with dense rows is derived by using the conditional Kovalenko's rank distribution. The estimate by the proposed approach is very close to the DEP approximated by Gaussian Elimination, and is significantly less complex. As a key application, we utilize the estimates for obtaining optimal LT codes with dense rows, whose DEP is very close to the Kovalenko's Full-Rank Limit within a desired error-bound. Experimental evidences which show the viability of the estimates are also provided.
Groups with maximal irredundant covers and minimal blocking sets
Let $n$ be a positive integer. Denote by $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ the $n$-dimensional projective space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of order $q$. A blocking set in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ is a set of points that has non-empty intersection with every hyperplane of $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$. A blocking set is called minimal if none of its proper subsets are blocking sets. In this note we prove that if $\mathrm{PG}(n_i,q)$ contains a minimal blocking set of size $k_i$ for $i\in\{1,2\}$, then $\mathrm{PG}(n_1+n_2+1,q)$ contains a minimal blocking set of size $k_1+k_2-1$. This result is proved by a result on groups with maximal irredundant covers.
Particles in RSOS paths

We introduce a new representation of the paths of the Forrester-Baxter RSOS models which represents the states of the irreducible modules of the minimal models M(p',p). This representation is obtained by transforming the RSOS paths, for the cases p> 2p'-2, to new paths for which horizontal edges are allowed at certain heights. These new paths are much simpler in that their weight is nothing but the sum of the position of the peaks. This description paves the way for the interpretation of the RSOS paths in terms of fermi-type charged particles out of which the fermionic characters could be obtained constructively. The derivation of the fermionic character for p'=2 and p=kp'+/- 1 is outlined. Finally, the particles of the RSOS paths are put in relation with the kinks and the breathers of the restricted sine-Gordon model.
New Bounds for Binary and Ternary Overloaded CDMA
In this paper, we study binary and ternary matrices that are used for CDMA applications that are injective on binary or ternary user vectors. In other words, in the absence of additive noise, the interference of overloaded CDMA can be removed completely. Some new algorithms are proposed for constructing such matrices. Also, using an information theoretic approach, we conjecture the extent to which such CDMA matrix codes exist. For overloaded case, we also show that some of the codes derived from our algorithms perform better than the binary Welch Bound Equality codes; the decoding is ML but of low complexity.

In this paper, we extend the recently introduced concept of partially dual ribbon graphs to graphs. We then go on to characterize partial duality of graphs in terms of bijections between edge sets of corresponding graphs. This result generalizes a well known result of J. Edmonds in which natural duality of graphs is characterized in terms of edge correspondence, and gives a combinatorial characterization of partial duality.
The tau constant and the edge connectivity of a metrized graph

The tau constant is an important invariant of a metrized graph, and it has applications in arithmetic properties of curves. We show how the tau constant of a metrized graph changes under successive edge contractions and deletions. We discover identities which we call "contraction", "deletion", and "contraction-deletion" identities on a metrized graph. By establishing a lower bound for the tau constant in terms of the edge connectivity, we prove that Baker and Rumely's lower bound conjecture on the tau constant holds for metrized graphs with edge connectivity 5 or more. We show that proving this conjecture for 3-regular graphs is enough to prove it for all graphs.

We construct the Schubert basis of the torus-equivariant K-homology of the affine Grassmannian of a simple algebraic group G, using the K-theoretic NilHecke ring of Kostant and Kumar. This is the K-theoretic analogue of a construction of Peterson in equivariant homology.
For the case G = SL_n, the K-homology of the affine Grassmannian is identified with a sub-Hopf algebra of the ring of symmetric functions. The Schubert basis is represented by inhomogeneous symmetric functions, called K-k-Schur functions, whose highest degree term is a k-Schur function. The dual basis in K-cohomology is given by the affine stable Grothendieck polynomials, verifying a conjecture of Lam. In addition, we give a Pieri rule in K-homology.
Many of our constructions have geometric interpretations using Kashiwara's thick affine flag manifold.

We give an explicit description of the mutation classes of quivers of type \tilde{A}_n. Furthermore, we provide a complete classification of cluster tilted algebras of type \tilde{A}_n up to derived equivalence. We show that the bounded derived category of such an algebra depends on four combinatorial parameters of the corresponding quiver.

In type A, the q,t-Fuss-Catalan numbers can be defined as a bigraded Hilbert series of a module associated to the symmetric group. We generalize this construction to (finite) complex reflection groups and, based on computer experiments, we exhibit several conjectured algebraic and combinatorial properties of these polynomials with non-negative integer coefficients. We prove the conjectures for the dihedral groups and for the cyclic groups. Finally, we present several ideas how the q,t-Fuss-Catalan numbers could be related to some graded Hilbert series of modules arising in the context of rational Cherednik algebras and thereby generalize known connections.
Enumerating simplicial decompositions of surfaces with boundaries

It is well-known that the triangulations of the disc with $n+2$ vertices on its boundary are counted by the $n$th Catalan number $C(n)=\frac{1}{n+1}{2n \choose n}$. This paper deals with the generalisation of this problem to any arbitrary compact surface $S$ with boundaries. We obtain the asymptotic number of simplicial decompositions of the surface $S$ with $n$ vertices on its boundary. More generally, we determine the asymptotic number of dissections of $S$ when the faces are $δ$-gons with $δ$ belonging to a set of admissible degrees $Δ\subseteq \{3,4,5,...\}$. We also give the limit laws of certain parameters of such dissections.
Pseudo-factorials, elliptic functions, and continued fractions

This study presents miscellaneous properties of pseudo-factorials, which are numbers whose recurrence relation is a twisted form of that of usual factorials. These numbers are associated with special elliptic functions, most notably, a Dixonian and a Weierstrass function, which parametrize the Fermat cubic curve and are relative to a hexagonal lattice. A continued fraction expansion of the ordinary generating function of pseudo-factorials, first discovered empirically, is established here. This article also provides a characterization of the associated orthogonal polynomials, which appear to form a new family of "elliptic polynomials", as well as various other properties of pseudo-factorials, including a hexagonal lattice sum expression and elementary congruences.
Avoiding Squares and Overlaps Over the Natural Numbers

We consider avoiding squares and overlaps over the natural numbers, using a greedy algorithm that chooses the least possible integer at each step; the word generated is lexicographically least among all such infinite words. In the case of avoiding squares, the word is 01020103..., the familiar ruler function, and is generated by iterating a uniform morphism. The case of overlaps is more challenging. We give an explicitly-defined morphism phi : N* -> N* that generates the lexicographically least infinite overlap-free word by iteration. Furthermore, we show that for all h,k in N with h <= k, the word phi^{k-h}(h) is the lexicographically least overlap-free word starting with the letter h and ending with the letter k, and give some of its symmetry properties.
The Erdos-Turan problem in infinite groups

Let $G$ be an infinite abelian group with $|2G|=|G|$. We show that if $G$ is not the direct sum of a group of exponent 3 and the group of order 2, then $G$ possesses a perfect additive basis; that is, there is a subset $S\subseteq G$ such that every element of $G$ is uniquely representable as a sum of two elements of $S$. Moreover, if $G$ \emph{is} the direct sum of a group of exponent 3 and the group of order 2, then it does not have a perfect additive basis; however, in this case there is a subset $S\subseteq G$ such that every element of $G$ has at most two representations (distinct under permuting the summands) as a sum of two elements of $S$. This solves completely the Erdos-Turan problem for infinite groups.
It is also shown that if $G$ is an abelian group of exponent 2, then there is a subset $S\subseteq G$ such that every element of $G$ has a representation as a sum of two elements of $S$, and the number of representations of non-zero elements is bounded by an absolute constant.

We address a number of conjectures about the ground state O(1) loop model, computing in particular two infinite series of partial sums of its entries and relating them to the enumeration of plane partitions. Our main tool is the use of integral formulae for a polynomial solution of the quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation.
Associated Primes of the Square of the Alexander Dual of Hypergraphs
The purpose of this paper is to provide methods for determining the associated primes of the square of the Alexander dual of the edge ideal for an m-hypergraph H. We prove a general method for detecting associated primes of the square of the Alexander dual of the edge ideal based on combinatorial conditions on the m-hypergraph. Also, we demonstrate a more efficient combinatorial criterion for detecting the non-existence of non-minimal associated primes. In investigating 3-hypergraphs, we prove a surprising extension of the previously discovered results for 2-hypergraphs (simple graphs). For 2-hypergraphs, associated primes of the square of the Alexander dual of the edge ideal are either of height 2 or of odd height greater than 2. However, we prove that in the 3-hypergraph case, there is no such restriction - or indeed any restriction - on the heights of the associated primes. Further, we generalize this result to any dimension greater than 3. Specifically, given any integers m, q, and n with 3\leq m\leq q\leq n, we construct a m-hypergraph of size n with an associated prime of height q. We further prove that it is possible to construct connected m-hypergraphs under the same conditions.
Coideals of block sequences
We extend the well known notion of \textit{coideal} on $\mathbb{N}$ to families of block sequences on $FIN_k$ and prove that if a coideal of block sequences is \textit{semiselective} and satisfies a local version of Gowers' theorem \cite{Gow} then the local Ramsey property relative to it can be characterized in terms of the abstract Baire property, and the family of all sets having the local Ramsey property relative to one such coideal is closed under the Suslin operation. We also prove that these coideals satisfy a sort of \emph{canonical partition property} in the sense of Taylor \cite{taylor}, López-Abad \cite{jordi} and Blass \cite{blass}. This results give us an idea of the conditions to be considered in an abstract study of the local Ramsey property in the context of topological Ramsey spaces (see \cite{todo}).
