We prove a conjecture about the vertices and edges of the exchange graph of a cluster algebra $\A$ in two cases: when $\A$ is of geometric type and when $\A$ is arbitrary and its exchange matrix is nondegenerate. In the second case we also prove that the exchange graph does not depend on the coefficients of $\A$. Both conjectures were formulated recently by Fomin and Zelevinsky.

We conjecture that the "nilpotent points" of Calogero-Moser space for reflection groups are parametrised naturally by the two-sided cells of the group with unequal parameters. The nilpotent points correspond to blocks of restricted Cherednik algebras and we describe these blocks in the case G(m,1,n) and show that in type B our description produces an existing conjectural description of two-sided cells.

We relate the representations of the rational Cherednik algebras associated with the complex reflection group G(m,1,n) to sheaves on Nakajima quiver varieties associated with extended Dynkin gaphs via a Z-algebra construction. As the parameters defining the Cherednik algebra vary, the stability conditions defining the quiver variety change. We interpret the ordering on category O geometrically using this relationship; we also relate the geometry to the a-function for Hecke algebras with unequal parameters.
Combinatoric results for graphical enumeration and the higher Catalan numbers
We summarize some combinatoric problems solved by the higher Catalan numbers. These problems are generalizations of the combinatoric problems solved by the Catalan numbers. The generating function of the higher Catalan numbers appeared recently as an auxiliary function in enumerating maps and explicit computations of the asymptotic expansion of the partition function of random matrices in the unitary ensemble case. We give combinatoric proofs of the formulas for the number of genus 0 and genus 1 maps.

We give tight upper bounds on the numerical range of square matrices in terms of their Frobenius (Euclidian) norm and a combinatorial parameter similar to the clique number of graphs. Our results imply a concise form of the fundamental theorem of Turan in extremal graph theory.
Counting preimages of TCP reordering patterns

Packet reordering is an important property of network traffic that should be captured by analytical models of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). We study a combinatorial problem motivated by RESTORED, a TCP modeling methodology that incorporates information about packet dynamics. A significant component of this model is a many-to-one mapping B that transforms sequences of packet IDs into buffer sequences, in a manner that is compatible with TCP semantics. We show that the following hold:
1. There exists a linear time algorithm that, given a buffer sequence W of length n, decides whether there exists a permutation A of 1,2,..., n such that $A\in B^{-1}(W)$ (and constructs such a permutation, when it exists).
2. The problem of counting the number of permutations in $B^{-1}(W)$ has a polynomial time algorithm.
We also show how to extend these results to sequences of IDs that contain repeated packets.

We construct two bijections of the symmetric group S_n onto itself that enable us to show that three new three-variable statistics are equidistributed with classical statistics involving the number of fixed points. The first one is equidistributed with the triplet (fix, des, maj), the last two with (fix, exc, maj), where "fix," "des," "exc" and "maj" denote the number of fixed points, the number of descents, the number of excedances and the major index, respectively.

Using classical transformations on the symmetric group and two transformations constructed in Fix-Mahonian Calculus I, we show that several multivariable statistics are equidistributed either with the triplet (fix, des, maj), or the pair (fix, maj), where "fix," "des" and "maj" denote the number of fixed points, the number of descents and the major index, respectively.

The inversion number and the major index are equidistributed on the symmetric group. This is a classical result, first proved by MacMahon, then by Foata by means of a combinatorial bijection. Ever since many refinements have been derived, which consist of adding new statistics, or replacing integral-valued statistics by set-valued ones. See the works by Foata-Schutzenberger, Skandera, Foata-Han and more recently by Hivert-Novelli-Thibon.
In the present paper we derive a general equidistribution property on Euler-Mahonian set-valued statistics on permutations, which unifies the above four refinements. We also state and prove the so-called "complement property" of the Majcode.

We consider a variety of connections between threshold graphs, shifted complexes, and simplicial complexes naturally formed from a graph. These graphical complexes include the independent set, neighborhood, and dominance complexes. We present a number of structural results and relations among them including new characterizations of the class of threshold graphs.

We present multiresidue formulae for partial sums in the basis of link patterns of the polynomial solution to the level 1 U_q(\hat sl_2) quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation at generic values of the quantum parameter q. These allow for rewriting and generalizing a recent conjecture [Di Francesco '06] connecting the above to generating polynomials for weighted Totally Symmetric Self-Complementary Plane Partitions. We reduce the corresponding conjectures to a single integral identity, yet to be proved.
Partitioning the Sample Space on Five Taxa for the Neighbor Joining Algorithm
In this paper, we will analyze the behavior of the Neighbor Joining algorithm on five taxa and we will show that the partition of the sample (data) space for estimation of a tree topology with five taxa into subspaces, within each of which the Neighbor Joining algorithm returns the same tree topology. A key of our method to partition the sample space is the action of the symmetric group $S_5$ on the set of distance matrices by changing the labels of leaves. The method described in this paper can be generalized to trees with more than five taxa.
Weighted complex projective 2-designs from bases: optimal state determination by orthogonal measurements

We introduce the problem of constructing weighted complex projective 2-designs from the union of a family of orthonormal bases. If the weight remains constant across elements of the same basis, then such designs can be interpreted as generalizations of complete sets of mutually unbiased bases, being equivalent whenever the design is composed of d+1 bases in dimension d. We show that, for the purpose of quantum state determination, these designs specify an optimal collection of orthogonal measurements. Using highly nonlinear functions on abelian groups, we construct explicit examples from d+2 orthonormal bases whenever d+1 is a prime power, covering dimensions d=6, 10, and 12, for example, where no complete sets of mutually unbiased bases have thus far been found.
The structure and classification of misère quotients

A \emph{bipartite monoid} is a commutative monoid $\Q$ together with an identified subset $¶\subset \Q$. In this paper we study a class of bipartite monoids, known as \emph{misère quotients}, that are naturally associated to impartial combinatorial games.
We introduce a structure theory for misère quotients with $|¶| = 2$, and give a complete classification of all such quotients up to isomorphism. One consequence is that if $|¶| = 2$ and $\Q$ is finite, then $|\Q| = 2^n+2$ or $2^n+4$.
We then develop computational techniques for enumerating misère quotients of small order, and apply them to count the number of non-isomorphic quotients of order at most~18. We also include a manual proof that there is exactly one quotient of order~8.

We consider the relation between various permutation statistics and properties of permutation tableaux. We answer some of the questions of Steingrimsson and Williams (math.CO/0507149), in particular, on the distribution of the bistatistic of numbers of rows and essential ones in permutation tableaux. We also consider and enumerate sets of permutation tableaux related to some pattern restrictions on permutations.

We extend to Barvinok's valuations the Euler-Maclaurin expansion formula which we obtained previously for the sum of values of a polynomial over the integral points of a rational polytope. This leads to an improvement of Barvinok's polynomial type algorithm for computing the highest coefficients of the corresponding Ehrhart quasi-polynomial.

We present a simple bijection between restricted (Bressoud) lattice paths and RSOS paths in regime II. Both types of paths describe states in Z_k parafermionic irreducible modules. The bijection implies a direct correspondence between a RSOS path and a parafermionic state in a quasi-particle basis.

For classes O of structures on finite linear orders (permutations, ordered graphs etc.) endowed with containment order cont (containment of permutations, subgraph relation etc.), we investigate restrictions on the function f(n) counting objects with size n in a lower ideal in (O, cont). We present a framework of edge P-colored complete graphs (C(P), cont) which includes many of these situations, and we prove for it two such restrictions (jumps in growth): f(n) is eventually constant or f(n) >= n for all n>0; f(n)<n^c for all n>0 for a constant c>0 or f(n) >= F_n for all n>0, F_n being the Fibonacci numbers. This generalizes a fragment of a more detailed theorem of Balogh, Bollobas and Morris on hereditary properties of ordered graphs.
A Census Of Highly Symmetric Combinatorial Designs

As a consequence of the classification of the finite simple groups, it has been possible in recent years to characterize Steiner t-designs, that is t-(v,k,1) designs, mainly for t = 2, admitting groups of automorphisms with sufficiently strong symmetry properties. However, despite the finite simple group classification, for Steiner t-designs with t > 2 most of these characterizations have remained longstanding challenging problems. Especially, the determination of all flag-transitive Steiner t-designs with 2 < t < 7 is of particular interest and has been open for about 40 years (cf. [11, p. 147] and [12, p. 273], but presumably dating back to 1965). The present paper continues the author's work [20, 21, 22] of classifying all flag-transitive Steiner 3-designs and 4-designs. We give a complete classification of all flag-transitive Steiner 5-designs and prove furthermore that there are no non-trivial flag-transitive Steiner 6-designs. Both results rely on the classification of the finite 3-homogeneous permutation groups. Moreover, we survey some of the most general results on highly symmetric Steiner t-designs.
