We present a positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the development of Jack polynomials in terms of power sums. This extends Stanley's ex-conjecture about normalized characters of the symmetric group. We prove this conjecture for partitions having a rectangular shape.

We prove that a sufficiently large subset of the $d$-dimensional vector space over a finite field with $q$ elements, $ {\Bbb F}_q^d$, contains a copy of every $k$-simplex. Fourier analytic methods, Kloosterman sums, and bootstrapping play an important role.
A New Version of the Menages Problem
The probleme des menages (married couples problem) introduced by E.Lucas in 1891 is a classical problem that asks the number of ways to arrange n married couples around a circular table, so that husbands and wives are in alternate places but no couple is seated together. In this paper we present a new version of the Menage Problem that carries the constraints consistent with the Muslim culture.
Deterministic Random Walks on the Two-Dimensional Grid

Jim Propp's rotor router model is a deterministic analogue of a random walk on a graph. Instead of distributing chips randomly, each vertex serves its neighbors in a fixed order. We analyze the difference between Propp machine and random walk on the infinite two-dimensional grid. It is known that, apart from a technicality, independent of the starting configuration, at each time, the number of chips on each vertex in the Propp model deviates from the expected number of chips in the random walk model by at most a constant. We show that this constant is approximately 7.8, if all vertices serve their neighbors in clockwise or counterclockwise order and 7.3 otherwise. This result in particular shows that the order in which the neighbors are served makes a difference. Our analysis also reveals a number of further unexpected properties of the two-dimensional Propp machine.
Fix-Mahonian Calculus III; a Quadruple Distribution

A four-variable distribution on permutations is derived, with two dual combinatorial interpretations. The first one includes the number of fixed points "fix", the second the so-called "pix" statistic. This shows that the duality between derangements and desarrangements can be extended to the case of multivariable statistics. Several specializations are obtained, including the joint distribution of (des, exc), where "des" and "exc" stand for the number of descents and excedances, respectively.
Combinatorial aspects of mirror symmetry

The purpose of this paper is to review some combinatorial ideas behind the mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces and complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. We suggest as a basic combinatorial object the notion of a Gorenstein polytope of index r. A natural combinatorial duality for d-dimensional Gorenstein polytopes of index r extends the well-known polar duality for reflexive polytopes (case r=1). We consider the Borisov duality between two nef-partitions as a duality between two Gorenstein polytopes P and P^* of index r together with selected special (r-1)-dimensional simplices S in P and S' in P^*. Different choices of these simplices suggest an interesting relation to Homological Mirror Symmetry.
Odd-Cycle-Free Facet Complexes and the König property

We use the definition of a simplicial cycle to define an odd-cycle-free facet complex (hypergraph). These are facet complexes that do not contain any cycles of odd length. We show that besides one class of such facet complexes, all of them satisfy the
König property. This new family of complexes includes the family of balanced hypergraphs, which are known to satisfy the König property. These facet complexes are, however, not Mengerian; we give an example to demonstrate this fact.

It has been shown by Voiculescu and Biane that the analytic subordination property holds for free additive and multiplicative convolutions. In this paper, we present an operatorial approach to subordination for free multiplicative convolutions. This study is based on the concepts of `freeness with subordination', or `s-free independence', and `orthogonal independence', introduced recently in the context of free additive convolutions. In particular, we introduce and study the associated multiplicative convolutions and construct related operators, called `subordination operators' and `subordination branches'. Using orthogonal independence, we derive decompositions of subordination branches and related decompositions of s-free and free multiplicative convolutions. The operatorial methods lead to several new types of graph products, called `loop products', associated with different notions of independence (monotone, boolean, orthogonal, s-free). We also prove that the enumeration of rooted `alternating double return walks' on the loop products of graphs and on the free product of graphs gives the moments of the corresponding multiplicative convolutions.
The octahedron recurrence and RSK-correspondence
We start with an ``algebraic'' RSK-correspondence due to Noumi and Yamada. Given a matrix $X$, we consider a pyramidal array of solid minors of $X$. It turns out that this array satisfies an algebraic variant of octahedron recurrence. The main observation is that this array can also be constructed with the help of some square `genetic' array. Next we tropicalize this algebraic construction and consider $T$-{\em polarized} pyramidal arrays (that is arrays satisfying octahedral relations). As a result we get several bijections, viz: a) a linear bijection between non-negative arrays and supermodular functions; b) a piecewise linear bijection between supermodular functions and the so called infra-modular functions; c) a linear bijection between infra-modular functions and plane partitions. A composition of these bijections yields a bijection between non-negative arrays and plane partitions coinciding with the modified RSK-correspondence.
Cohen-Macaulay graphs arising from digraphs
In this paper we show a correspondence between directed graphs and bipartite undirected graphs with a perfect matching, that allows to study properties of directed graphs through the properties of the corresponding undirected graphs. In particular it is shown that a directed graph is transitive iff a corresponding undirected graph is Cohen-Macaulay.
Classification of terminal simplicial reflexive d-polytopes with 3d-1 vertices
We classify terminal simplicial reflexive d-polytopes with 3d-1 vertices. They turn out to be smooth Fano d-polytopes. When d is even there is 1 such polytope up to isomorphism, while there are 2 when d is uneven.

Heights in finite projective space, and a problem on directed graphs

Let $\F_p = \Z/p\Z$. The \emph{height} of a point $\mathbf{a}=(a_1,..., a_d) \in \F_p^d$ is $h_p(\mathbf{a}) = \min \left\{\sum_{i=1}^d (ka_i \mod p) : k=1,...,p-1\right\}.$ Explicit formulas and estimates are obtained for the values of the height function in the case $d=2,$ and these results are applied to the problem of determining the minimum number of edges the must be deleted from a finite directed graph so that the resulting subgraph is acyclic.

We continue the study of the maximally clustered elements for simply laced Coxeter groups which were recently introduced by Losonczy. Such elements include as a special case the freely braided elements of Losonczy and the author, which in turn constitute a superset of the $iji$-avoiding elements of Fan. Our main result is to classify the MC-finite Coxeter groups, namely those Coxeter groups having finitely many maximally clustered elements. Remarkably, any simply laced Coxeter group having finitely many $iji$-avoiding elements also turns out to be MC-finite.

The goal of our work is to study the spaces of primitive elements of the Hopf algebras associated to the permutaedra and the associaedra. We introduce the notion of shuffle and preshuffle bialgebras, and compute the subpaces of primitive elements associated to these algebras. These spaces of primitive elements are free objects for some types of algebras which we describe in terms of generators and relations.

In this paper we describe geometry of orbits of upper triangular matrices of nilpotent order 2 under conjugation by the group of upper triangular invertible matrices in terms of link patterns. Further we apply this description to the computations of the closures of orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 and intersections of components of a Springer fiber of nilpotent order 2. In particular we connect our results to the combinatorics of meanders and Temperley-Lieb algebras.

We present some elementary ideas to prove the following Sylvester-Gallai type theorems involving incidences between points and lines in the planes over the complex numbers and quaternions.
(1) Let A and B be finite sets of at least two complex numbers each. Then there exists a line l in the complex affine plane such that l intersects AxB in exactly two points.
(2) Let S be a finite noncollinear set of points in the complex affine plane. Then there exists a line l intersecting S in 2, 3, 4 or 5 points.
(3) Let A and B be finite sets of at least two quaternions each. Then there exists a line l in the quaternionic affine plane such that l intersects AxB in 2, 3, 4 or 5 points.
(4) Let S be a finite noncollinear set of points in the quaternionic affine plane. Then there exists a line l intersecting S in at least 2 and at most 24 points.
Polynomial ideals and directed graphs
In this paper it is shown that it is possible to associate several polynomial ideals to a directed graph $D$ in order to find properties of it. In fact by using algebraic tools it is possible to give appropriate procedures for automatic reasoning on cycles and directed cycles of graphs.

In 1954, Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer proved Dyson's conjectures on the rank of a partition by establishing formulas for the generating functions for rank differences in arithmetic progressions. In this paper, we prove formulas for the generating functions for rank differences for overpartitions. These are in terms of modular functions and generalized Lambert series.
Product decompositions of quasirandom groups and a Jordan type theorem

We first note that a result of Gowers on product-free sets in groups has an unexpected consequence: If k is the minimal degree of a representation of the finite group G, then for every subset B of G with $|B| > |G| / k^{1/3}$ we have B^3 = G.
We use this to obtain improved versions of recent deep theorems of Helfgott and of Shalev concerning product decompositions of finite simple groups, with much simpler proofs.
On the other hand, we prove a version of Jordan's theorem which implies that if k>1, then G has a proper subgroup of index at most ck^2 for some absolute constant c, hence a product-free subset of size at least $|G| / c'k$. This answers a question of Gowers.
