The Pattern Complexity of the Squiral Tiling
We give an exact formula for the number of distinct square patterns of a given size that occur in the Squiral tiling.
Invariants of Bipartite Kneser B type-\MakeLowercase{k} graphs
Let $\mathscr{B}_n = \{ \pm x_1, \pm x_2, \pm x_3, \cdots, \pm x_{n-1}, x_n \}$ where $n>1$ is fixed, $x_i \in \mathbb{R}^+$, $i = 1, 2, 3, \cdots, n$ and $x_1 < x_2 < x_3 < \cdots < x_n$. Let $φ(\mathscr{B}_n)$ be the set of all non-empty subsets $S = \{u_1, u_2,\cdots, u_t\}$ of $\mathscr{B}_n$ such that $|u_1|<|u_2|<\cdots <|u_{t-1}|<u_t $ where $u_t\in \mathbb{R}^+$. Let $\mathscr{B}_n^+ = \{ x_1, x_2, x_3, \cdots, x_{n-1}, x_n \}$. For a fixed $k$, let $V_1$ be the set of $k$-element subsets of $\mathscr{B}_n^+$, $1 \leq k <n$. $V_2= φ(\mathscr{B}_n)-V_1$. For any $A \in V_2$, let $A^\dagger = \{\lvert x \rvert: x \in A\}$. Define a bipartite graph with parts $V_1$ and $V_2$ and having adjacency as $X \in V_1$ is adjacent to $Y\in V_2$ if and only if $X \subset Y^\dagger$ or $Y^\dagger \subset X$. A graph of this type is called a bipartite Kneser B type-$k$ graph and denoted by $H_B(n,k)$. In this paper, we calculated various graph invariants of $H_B(n,k)$.

Trees and near-linear stable sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
When $H$ is a forest, the Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture implies that every graph $G$ with no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$ and with bounded clique number has a stable set of linear size. We cannot prove that, but we prove that every such graph $G$ has a stable set of size $|G|^{1-o(1)}$. If $H$ is not a forest, there need not be such a stable set. Second, we prove that when $H$ is a ``multibroom'', there {\em is} a stable set of linear size. As a consequence, we deduce that all multibrooms satisfy a ``fractional colouring'' version of the Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture. Finally, we discuss extensions of our results to the multicolour setting.

Subdivisions and near-linear stable sets

We prove that for every complete graph $K_t$, all graphs $G$ with no induced subgraph isomorphic to a subdivision of $K_t$ have a stable subset of size at least $|G|/{\rm polylog}|G|$. This is close to best possible, because for $t\ge 7$, not all such graphs $G$ have a stable set of linear size, even if $G$ is triangle-free.

Almost Commutative Terwilliger Algebras of Group Association Schemes II: Primitive Idempotents
This paper is a continuation of Almost Commutative Terwilliger Algebras of Group Association Schemes I: Classification [1]. In that paper, we found all groups G for which the Terwilliger algebra of the group association scheme, denoted T (G), is almost commutative. We also found the primitive idempotents for T (G) for three of the four types of such groups. In this paper, we determine the primitive idempotents for the fourth type.

A degenerate version of Brion's formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathfrak{p} \subset V$ be a polytope and $ξ\in V_{\mathbb{C}}^*$. We obtain an expression for $I(\mathfrak{p}; α) := \int_{\mathfrak{p}} e^{\langle α, x \rangle} dx$ as a sum of meromorphic functions in $α\in V^*_{\mathbb{C}}$ parametrized by the faces $\mathfrak{f}$ of $\mathfrak{p}$ on which $\langle ξ, x \rangle$ is constant. Each term only depends on the local geometry of $\mathfrak{p}$ near $\mathfrak{f}$ (and on $ξ$) and is holomorphic at $α= ξ$. When $\langle ξ, \cdot \rangle$ is only constant on the vertices of $\mathfrak{p}$ our formula reduces to Brion's formula. Suppose $\mathfrak{p}$ is a rational polytope with respect to a lattice $Λ$. We obtain an expression for $S(\mathfrak{p}; α) := \sum_{λ\in \mathfrak{p} \cap Λ} e^{\langle α, λ\rangle}$ as a sum of meromorphic functions parametrized by the faces $\mathfrak{f}$ on which $e^{\langle ξ, x \rangle} = 1$ on a finite index sublattice of $\text{lin}(\mathfrak{f}) \cap Λ$. Each term only depends on the local geometry of $\mathfrak{p}$ near $\mathfrak{f}$ (and on $ξ$ and $Λ$) and is holomorphic at $α= ξ$. When $e^{\langle ξ, \cdot \rangle} \neq 1$ at any non-zero lattice point on a line through the origin parallel to an edge of $\mathfrak{p}$, our formula reduces to Brion's formula, and when $ξ= 0$, it reduces to the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial. Our formulas are particularly useful for understanding how $I(\mathfrak{p}(h); ξ)$ and $S(\mathfrak{p}(h); ξ)$ vary in a family of polytopes $\mathfrak{p}(h)$ with the same normal fan. When considering dilates of a fixed polytope, our formulas may be viewed as polytopal analogues of Laplace's method and the method of stationary phase. Such expressions naturally show up in analysis on symmetric spaces and affine buildings.

A Riordan array family for some integrable lattice models
We study a family of Riordan arrays whose square symmetrizations lead to the Robbins numbers as well as numbers associated to the $20$ vertex model. We provide closed-form expressions for the elements of these arrays, and also give a canonical Catalan factorization for them. We describe a related family of Riordan arrays whose symmetrizations also lead to the same integer sequences.

Subsquares in random Latin rectangles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose that $k$ is a function of $n$ and $n\to\infty$. We show that with probability $1-O(1/n)$, a uniformly random $k\times n$ Latin rectangle contains no proper Latin subsquare of order $4$ or more, proving a conjecture of Divoux, Kelly, Kennedy and Sidhu. We also show that the expected number of subsquares of order 3 is bounded and find that the expected number of subsquares of order 2 is $\binom{k}{2}(1/2+o(1))$ for all $k\le n$.

Hypergraph associahedra and compactifications of moduli spaces of points
We prove that every Hassett compactification of the moduli space of weighted stable rational curves that admits both a reduction map from the Losev-Manin compactification and a reduction map to projective space is a toric variety, whose corresponding polytope is a hypergraph associahedron (also known as a nestohedron). In addition, we present an analogous result for the moduli space of labeled weighted points in affine space up to translation and scaling. These results are interconnected, and we make their relationship explicit through the concept of ``inflation" of a hypergraph associahedron.

On a generalization of a result of Kleitman
Published • View PublicationBIB
A classical result of Kleitman determines the maximum number $f(n,s)$ of subsets in a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ of sets that do not contain distinct sets $F_1,F_2,\dots,F_s$ that are pairwise disjoint in the case $n\equiv 0,-1$ (mod $s$). Katona and Nagy determined the maximum size of a family of subsets of an $n$-element set that does not contain $A_1,A_2,\dots,A_t,B_1,B_2,\dots,B_t$ with $\bigcup_{i=1}^t A_i$ and $\bigcup_{i=1}^t B_i$ being disjoint. In this paper, we consider the problem of finding the maximum number $vex(n,K_{s\times t})$ in a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ without sets $F^1_1,\dots,F^1_t,\dots,F^s_1,\dots,F^s_t$ such that $G_j=\bigcup_{i=1}^tF^j_i$ $j=1,2,\dots,s$ are pairwise disjoint. We determine the asymptotics of $2^n-vex(n,K_{s\times t})$ if $n\equiv -1$ (mod $s$) for all $t$, and if $n\equiv 0$ (mod $s$), $t\ge 3$ and show that in this latter case the asymptotics of the $t=2$ subcase is different from both the $t=1$ and $t\ge 3$ subcases.

Ramsey numbers for partially ordered sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this thesis, we present quantitative Ramsey-type results in the setting of finite sets that are equipped with a partial order, so-called posets. A prominent example of a poset is the Boolean lattice $Q_n$, which consists of all subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$, ordered by inclusion. For posets $P$ and $Q$, the poset Ramsey number $R(P,Q)$ is the smallest $N$ such that no matter how the elements of $Q_N$ are colored in blue and red, there is either an induced subposet isomorphic to $P$ in which every element is colored blue, or an induced subposet isomorphic to $Q$ in which every element is colored red. The central focus of this thesis is to investigate $R(P,Q_n)$, where $P$ is fixed and $n$ grows large. Our results contribute to an active area of discrete mathematics, which studies the existence of large homogeneous substructures in host structures with local constraints, introduced for graphs by Erdős and Hajnal. We provide an asymptotically tight bound on $R(P,Q_n)$ for $P$ from several classes of posets, and show a dichotomy in the asymptotic behavior of $R(P,Q_n)$, depending on whether $P$ contains a subposet isomorphic to one of two specific posets. A fundamental question in the study of poset Ramsey numbers is to determine the asymptotic behavior of $R(Q_n,Q_n)$ for large $n$. In this dissertation, we present improvements on the known lower and upper bound on $R(Q_n,Q_n)$. Moreover, we explore variations of the poset Ramsey setting, including Erdős-Hajnal-type questions when the small forbidden poset has a non-monochromatic color pattern, and so-called weak poset Ramsey numbers, which are concerned with non-induced subposets.
Injective colorings of Sierpiński-like graphs and Kneser graphs
Two relationships between the injective chromatic number and, respectively, chromatic number and chromatic index, are proved. They are applied to determine the injective chromatic number of Sierpiński graphs and to give a short proof that Sierpiński graphs are Class $1$. Sierpiński-like graphs are also considered, including generalized Sierpiński graphs over cycles and rooted products. It is proved that the injective chromatic number of a rooted product of two graphs lies in a set of six possible values. Sierpiński graphs and Kneser graphs $K(n,r)$ are considered with respect of being perfect injectively colorable, where a graph is perfect injectively colorable if it has an injective coloring in which every color class forms an open packing of largest cardinality. In particular, all Sierpiński graphs and Kneser graphs $K(n, r)$ with $n \ge 3r-1$ are perfect injectively colorable graph, while $K(7,3)$ is not.
Vertex identification to a forest

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a graph class and $k\in\mathbb{N}$. We say a graph $G$ admits a \emph{$k$-identification to $\mathcal{H}$} if there is a partition $\mathcal{P}$ of some set $X\subseteq V(G)$ of size at most $k$ such that after identifying each part in $\mathcal{P}$ to a single vertex, the resulting graph belongs to $\mathcal{H}$. The graph parameter ${\sf id}_{\mathcal{H}}$ is defined so that ${\sf id}_{\mathcal{H}}(G)$ is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ admits a $k$-identification to $\mathcal{H}$, and the problem of \textsc{Identification to $\mathcal{H}$} asks, given a graph $G$ and $k\in\mathbb{N}$, whether ${\sf id}_{\mathcal{H}}(G)\le k$. If we set $\mathcal{H}$ to be the class $\mathcal{F}$ of acyclic graphs, we generate the problem \textsc{Identification to Forest}, which we show to be {\sf NP}-complete. We prove that, when parameterized by the size $k$ of the identification set, it admits a kernel of size $2k+1$. For our kernel we reveal a close relation of \textsc{Identification to Forest} with the \textsc{Vertex Cover} problem. We also study the combinatorics of the \textsf{yes}-instances of \textsc{Identification to $\mathcal{H}$}, i.e., the class $\mathcal{H}^{(k)}:=\{G\mid {\sf id}_{\mathcal{H}}(G)\le k\}$, {which we show to be minor-closed for every $k$} when $\mathcal{H}$ is minor-closed. We prove that the minor-obstructions of $\mathcal{F}^{(k)}$ are of size at most $2k+4$. We also prove that every graph $G$ such that ${\sf id}_{\mathcal{F}}(G)$ is sufficiently big contains as a minor either a cycle on $k$ vertices, or $k$ disjoint triangles, or the \emph{$k$-marguerite} graph, that is the graph obtained by $k$ disjoint triangles by identifying one vertex of each of them into the same vertex.
Shifts of Finite Type Obtained by Forbidding a Single Pattern

Given a finite word $w$, Guibas and Odlyzko (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 30, 1981, 183-208) showed that the autocorrelation polynomial $φ_w(t)$ of $w$, which records the set of self-overlaps of $w$, explicitly determines for each $n$, the number $|B_n(w)|$ of words of length $n$ that avoid $w$. We consider this and related problems from the viewpoint of symbolic dynamics, focusing on the setting of $X_{\{w\}}$, the space of all bi-infinite sequences that avoid $w$. We first summarize and elaborate upon (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 30, 1981, 183-208) and other work to show that the sequence $|B_n(w)|$ is equivalent to several invariants of $X_{\{w\}}$. We then give a finite-state labeled graphical representation $L_w$ of $X_{\{w\}}$ and show that $w$ can be recovered from the graph isomorphism class of the unlabeled version of $L_w$. Using $L_w$, we apply ideas from probability and Perron-Frobenius theory to obtain results comparing features of $X_{\{w\}}$ for different $w$. Next, we give partial results on the problem of classifying the spaces $X_{\{w\}}$ up to conjugacy. Finally, we extend some of our results to spaces of multi-dimensional arrays that avoid a given finite pattern.
Markov chains, CAT(0) cube complexes, and enumeration: monotone paths in a strip mix slowly
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that two natural Markov chains on the set of monotone paths in a strip mix slowly. To do so, we make novel use of the theory of non-positively curved (CAT(0)) cubical complexes to detect small bottlenecks in many graphs of combinatorial interest. Along the way, we give a formula for the number c_m(n) of monotone paths of length n in a strip of height m. In particular we compute the exponential growth constant of c_m(n) for arbitrary m, generalizing results of Williams for m=2, 3.

$E_A$-cordial labeling of graphs and its implications for $A$-antimagic labeling of trees
Published in Discrete Mathematics Volume 348, Issue 9, September 2025, 114493 • View PublicationBIB
If $A$ is a finite Abelian group, then a labeling $f \colon E (G) \rightarrow A$ of the edges of some graph $G$ induces a vertex labeling on $G$; the vertex $u$ receives the label $\sum_{v\in N(u)}f (v)$, where $N(u)$ is an open neighborhood of the vertex $u$. A graph $G$ is $E_A$-cordial if there is an edge-labeling such that (1) the edge label classes differ in size by at most one and (2) the induced vertex label classes differ in size by at most one. Such a labeling is called $E_A$-cordial. In the literature, so far only $E_A$-cordial labeling in cyclic groups has been studied. The corresponding problem was studied by Kaplan, Lev and Roditty. Namely, they introduced $A^*$-antimagic labeling as a generalization of antimagic labeling \cite{ref_KapLevRod}. Simply saying, for a tree of order $|A|$ the $A^*$-antimagic labeling is such $E_A$-cordial labeling that the label $0$ is prohibited on the edges. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for paths to be $E_A$-cordial for any cyclic $A$. We also show that the conjecture for $A^*$-antimagic labeling of trees posted in \cite{ref_KapLevRod} is not true.
Critical Thresholds for Maximum Cardinality Matching on General Hypergraphs
Significant work has been done on computing the ``average'' optimal solution value for various $\mathsf{NP}$-complete problems using the Erdös-Rényi model to establish \emph{critical thresholds}. Critical thresholds define narrow bounds for the optimal solution of a problem instance such that the probability that the solution value lies outside these bounds vanishes as the instance size approaches infinity. In this paper, we extend the Erdös-Rényi model to general hypergraphs on $n$ vertices and $M$ hyperedges. We consider the problem of determining critical thresholds for the largest cardinality matching, and we show that for $M=o(1.155^n)$ the size of the maximum cardinality matching is almost surely 1. On the other hand, if $M=Θ(2^n)$ then the size of the maximum cardinality matching is $Ω(n^{\frac12-γ})$ for an arbitrary $γ>0$. Lastly, we address the gap where $Ω(1.155^n)=M=o(2^n)$ empirically through computer simulations.

Almost Commutative Terwilliger Algebras of Group Association Schemes I: Classification
Terwilliger algebras are a subalgebra of a matrix algebra that are constructed from association schemes over finite sets. In 2010, Rie Tanaka defined what it means for a Terwilliger algebra to be almost commutative. In that paper she gave five equivalent conditions for a Terwilliger algebra to be almost commutative. In this paper, we provide a classification of which groups result in an almost commutative Terwilliger algebra when looking at the group association scheme (the Schur ring generated by the conjugacy classes of the group). In particular, we show that all such groups are either abelian, or Camina groups. Following this classification, we then compute the dimension and non-primary primitive idempotents for each Terwilliger algebra of this form for the first three types of groups whose group association scheme gives an almost commutative Terwilliger algebra. The final case will be considered in a second paper.

Positive co-degree thresholds for spanning structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
The \textit{minimum positive co-degree} of a non-empty $r$-graph $H$, denoted $δ_{r-1}^+(H)$, is the largest integer $k$ such that if a set $S \subset V(H)$ of size $r-1$ is contained in at least one $r$-edge of $H$, then $S$ is contained in at least $k$ $r$-edges of $H$. Motivated by several recent papers which study minimum positive co-degree as a reasonable notion of minimum degree in $r$-graphs, we consider bounds of $δ_{r-1}^+(H)$ which will guarantee the existence of various spanning subgraphs in $H$. We precisely determine the minimum positive co-degree threshold for Berge Hamiltonian cycles in $r$-graphs, and asymptotically determine the minimum positive co-degree threshold for loose Hamiltonian cycles in $3$-graphs. For all $r$, we also determine up to an additive constant the minimum positive co-degree threshold for perfect matchings.

Self-Reachable Configuration Polytopes for Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study lattice polytopes which arise as the convex hull of chip vectors for \textit{self-reachable} chip configurations on a tree $T$. We show that these polytopes always have the integer decomposition property and characterize the vertex sets of these polytopes. Additionally, in the case of self-reachable configurations with the smallest possible number of chips, we show that these polytopes are unimodularly equivalent to a unit cube.
