Alternating sign matrices (ASMs) are square matrices with entries 0, 1, or -1 whose rows and columns sum to 1 and whose nonzero entries alternate in sign. We present a unifying perspective on ASMs and other combinatorial objects by studying a certain tetrahedral poset and its subposets. We prove the order ideals of these subposets are in bijection with a variety of interesting combinatorial objects, including ASMs, totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions (TSSCPPs), staircase shaped semistandard Young tableaux, Catalan objects, tournaments, and totally symmetric plane partitions. We prove product formulas counting these order ideals and give the rank generating function of some of the corresponding lattices of order ideals. We also prove an expansion of the tournament generating function as a sum over TSSCPPs. This result is analogous to a result of Robbins and Rumsey expanding the tournament generating function as a sum over alternating sign matrices.

The dense O(1) loop model is a statistical physics model with connections to the quantum XXZ spin chain, alternating sign matrices, the six-vertex model and critical bond percolation on the square lattice. When cylindrical boundary conditions are imposed, the model possesses a commuting family of transfer matrices. The original proof of the commutation property is algebraic and is based on the Yang-Baxter equation. In this paper we give a new proof of this fact using a direct combinatorial bijection.

We prove two identities of Hall-Littlewood polynomials, which appeared recently in a paper by two of the authors. We also conjecture, and in some cases prove, new identities which relate infinite sums of symmetric polynomials and partition functions associated with symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. These identities generalize those already found in our earlier paper, via the introduction of additional parameters. The left hand side of each of our identities is a simple refinement of a relevant Cauchy or Littlewood identity. The right hand side of each identity is (one of the two factors present in) the partition function of the six-vertex model on a relevant domain.

In 2007, the first author gave an alternative proof of the refined alternating sign matrix theorem by introducing a linear equation system that determines the refined ASM numbers uniquely. Computer experiments suggest that the numbers appearing in a conjecture concerning the number of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices with respect to the position of the first 1 in the second row of the matrix establish the solution of a linear equation system similar to the one for the ordinary refined ASM numbers. In this paper we show how our attempt to prove this fact naturally leads to a more general conjectural multivariate Laurent polynomial identity. Remarkably, in contrast to the ordinary refined ASM numbers, we need to extend the combinatorial interpretation of the numbers to parameters which are not contained in the combinatorial admissible domain. Some partial results towards proving the conjectured multivariate Laurent polynomial identity and additional motivation why to study it are presented as well.

Half turn symmetric alternating sign matrices (HTSASMs) are special variations of the well-known alternating sign matrices which have a long and fascinating history. HTSASMs are interesting combinatorial objects in their own right and have been the focus of recent study. Here we explore counting weighted HTSASMs with respect to a number of statistics to derive an orthogonal group version of Tokuyama's factorisation formula, which involves a deformation and expansion of Weyl's denominator formula multiplied by a general linear group character. Deformations of Weyl's original denominator formula to other root systems have been discovered by Okada and Simpson, and it is thus natural to ask for versions of Tokuyama's factorisation formula involving other root systems. Here we obtain such a formula involving a deformation of Weyl's denominator formula for the orthogonal group multiplied by a deformation of an orthogonal group character.

We prove and conjecture some new symmetric function identities, which equate the generating series of 1. Plane partitions, subject to certain restrictions and weightings, and 2. Alternating sign matrices, subject to certain symmetry properties. The left hand side of each of our identities is a simple refinement of a relevant Cauchy or Littlewood identity, allowing them to be interpreted as generating series for plane partitions. The right hand side of each identity is a partition function of the six-vertex model, on a relevant domain. These can be interpreted as generating series for alternating sign matrices, using the well known bijection with six-vertex model configurations.
Inversions and the Gog-Magog problem
We consider the problem of finding a bijection between the sets of alternating sign matrices and of totally symmetric self complementary plane partitions, which can be reformulated using Gog and Magog triangles. In a previous work we introduced GOGAm triangles, which are images of Magog triangles by the Schützenberger involution. In this paper we introduce left Gog and GOGAm trapezoids. We conjecture that they are equienumerated, and we give an explicit bijection between such trapezoids with one or two diagonals. We also study the distribution of inversions and coinversions in Gog triangles.

In alternating sign matrices the first and last nonzero entry in each row and column is specified to be +1.
Such matrices always exist. We investigate a generalization by specifying independently the sign of the first and last nonzero entry in each row and column to be either a +1 or a -1. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for such matrices to exist.

We construct a new bigraded Hopf algebra whose bases are indexed by square matrices with entries in the alphabet $\{0, 1, ..., k\}$, $k \geq 1$, without null rows or columns. This Hopf algebra generalizes the one of permutations of Malvenuto and Reutenauer, the one of $k$-colored permutations of Novelli and Thibon, and the one of uniform block permutations of Aguiar and Orellana. We study the algebraic structure of our Hopf algebra and show, by exhibiting multiplicative bases, that it is free. We moreover show that it is self-dual and admits a bidendriform bialgebra structure. Besides, as a Hopf subalgebra, we obtain a new one indexed by alternating sign matrices. We study some of its properties and algebraic quotients defined through alternating sign matrices statistics.

The aim of this note is to prove that fluctuations of uniformly random alternating sign matrices (equivalently, configurations of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions) near the boundary are described by the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and the GUE-corners process.

We develop a new method for studying the asymptotics of symmetric polynomials of representation-theoretic origin as the number of variables tends to infinity. Several applications of our method are presented: We prove a number of theorems concerning characters of infinite-dimensional unitary group and their $q$-deformations. We study the behavior of uniformly random lozenge tilings of large polygonal domains and find the GUE-eigenvalues distribution in the limit. We also investigate similar behavior for alternating sign matrices (equivalently, six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions). Finally, we compute the asymptotic expansion of certain observables in $O(n=1)$ dense loop model.

We are interested in finding an explicit bijection between two families of combinatorial objects: Gog and Magog triangles. These two families are particular classes of Gelfand-Tsetlin triangles and are respectively in bijection with alternating sign matrices (ASM) and totally symmetric self complementary plane partitions (TSSCPP). For this purpose, we introduce left Gog and GOGAm trapezoids. We conjecture that these two families of trapezoids are equienumerated and we give an explicit bijection between the trapezoids with one or two diagonals.

In a recent work, the combinatorial interpretation of the polynomial alpha(n;k1,k2,...,kn) counting the number of Monotone Triangles with bottom row k1 < k2 < ... < kn was extended to weakly decreasing sequences k1 >= k2 >= ... >= kn. In this case the evaluation of the polynomial is equal to a signed enumeration of objects called Decreasing Monotone Triangles. In this paper we define Generalized Monotone Triangles - a joint generalization of both ordinary Monotone Triangles and Decreasing Monotone Triangles. As main result of the paper we prove that the evaluation of alpha(n;k1,k2,...,kn) at arbitrary (k1,k2,...,kn) in Z^n is a signed enumeration of Generalized Monotone Triangles with bottom row (k1,k2,...,kn). Computational experiments indicate that certain evaluations of the polynomial at integral sequences yield well-known round numbers related to Alternating Sign Matrices. The main result provides a combinatorial interpretation of the conjectured identities and could turn out useful in giving a bijective proof.
Multiply-refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices

Four natural boundary statistics and two natural bulk statistics are considered for alternating sign matrices (ASMs). Specifically, these statistics are the positions of the 1's in the first and last rows and columns of an ASM, and the numbers of generalized inversions and -1's in an ASM. Previously-known and related results for the exact enumeration of ASMs with prescribed values of some of these statistics are discussed in detail. A quadratic relation which recursively determines the generating function associated with all six statistics is then obtained. This relation also leads to various new identities satisfied by generating functions associated with fewer than six of the statistics. The derivation of the relation involves combining the Desnanot-Jacobi determinant identity with the Izergin-Korepin formula for the partition function of the six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions.

The refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices (ASMs) of given order having prescribed behavior near one or more of their boundary edges has been the subject of extensive study, starting with the Refined Alternating Sign Matrix Conjecture of Mills-Robbins-Rumsey, its proof by Zeilberger, and more recent work on doubly-refined and triply-refined enumeration by several authors. In this paper we extend the previously known results on this problem by deriving explicit enumeration formulas for the "top-left-bottom" (triply-refined) and "top-left-bottom-right" (quadruply-refined) enumerations. The latter case solves the problem of computing the full boundary correlation function for ASMs. The enumeration formulas are proved by deriving new representations, which are of independent interest, for the partition function of the square ice model with domain wall boundary conditions at the "combinatorial point" 2π/3.
Alternating paths of fully packed loops and inversion number
We consider the set of alternating paths on a fixed fully packed loop of size n. This set is in bijection with the set of fully packed loops of size n. Furthermore, for a special choice of fully packed loop, we demonstrate that the set of alternating paths are nested osculating loops, which we call Dyck islands. Dyck islands can be constructed as a union of lattice Dyck paths, and we use this structure to give a simple graphical formula for the calculation of the inversion number of an alternating sign matrix.

It was shown recently by the authors that, for any n, there is equality between the distributions of certain triplets of statistics on nxn alternating sign matrices (ASMs) and descending plane partitions (DPPs) with each part at most n. The statistics for an ASM A are the number of generalized inversions in A, the number of -1's in A and the number of 0's to the left of the 1 in the first row of A, and the respective statistics for a DPP D are the number of nonspecial parts in D, the number of special parts in D and the number of n's in D. Here, the result is generalized to include a fourth statistic for each type of object, where this is the number of 0's to the right of the 1 in the last row of an ASM, and the number of (n-1)'s plus the number of rows of length n-1 in a DPP. This generalization is proved using the known equality of the three-statistic generating functions, together with relations which express each four-statistic generating function in terms of its three-statistic counterpart. These relations are obtained by applying the Desnanot-Jacobi identity to determinantal expressions for the generating functions, where the determinants arise from standard methods involving the six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions for ASMs, and nonintersecting lattice paths for DPPs.
Combinatorial Reciprocity for Monotone Triangles

The number of Monotone Triangles with bottom row k1 < k2 < ... < kn is given by a polynomial alpha(n; k1,...,kn) in n variables. The evaluation of this polynomial at weakly decreasing sequences k1 >= k2 >= ... >= kn turns out to be interpretable as signed enumeration of new combinatorial objects called Decreasing Monotone Triangles. There exist surprising connections between the two classes of objects -- in particular it is shown that alpha(n; 1,2,...,n) = alpha(2n; n,n,n-1,n-1,...,1,1). In perfect analogy to the correspondence between Monotone Triangles and Alternating Sign Matrices, the set of Decreasing Monotone Triangles with bottom row (n,n,n-1,n-1,...,1,1) is in one-to-one correspondence with a certain set of ASM-like matrices, which also play an important role in proving the claimed identity algebraically. Finding a bijective proof remains an open problem.
