Topological string amplitudes and Seiberg-Witten prepotentials from the counting of dimers in transverse flux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Important illustration to the principle ``partition functions in string theory are $τ$-functions of integrable equations'' is the fact that the (dual) partition functions of $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories solve Painlevé equations. In this paper we show a road to self-consistent proof of the recently suggested generalization of this correspondence: partition functions of topological string on local Calabi-Yau manifolds solve $q$-difference equations of non-autonomous dynamics of the ``cluster-algebraic'' integrable systems. We explain in details the ``solutions'' side of the proposal. In the simplest non-trivial example we show how $3d$ box-counting of topological string partition function appears from the counting of dimers on bipartite graph with the discrete gauge field of ``flux'' $q$. This is a new form of topological string/spectral theory type correspondence, since the partition function of dimers can be computed as determinant of the linear $q$-difference Kasteleyn operator. Using WKB method in the ``melting'' $q\to 1$ limit we get a closed integral formula for Seiberg-Witten prepotential of the corresponding $5d$ gauge theory. The ``equations'' side of the correspondence remains the intriguing topic for the further studies.

Simultaneous coloring of vertices and incidences of Outerplanar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $vi$-simultaneous proper $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring of all vertices and incidences of the graph in which any two adjacent or incident elements in the set $V(G)\cup I(G)$ receive distinct colors, where $I(G)$ is the set of incidences of $G$. The $vi$-simultaneous chromatic number, denoted by $χ_{vi}(G)$, is the smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ has a $vi$-simultaneous proper $k$-coloring. In [M. Mozafari-Nia, M. N. Iradmusa, A note on coloring of $\frac{3}{3}$-power of subquartic graphs, Vol. 79, No.3, 2021] $vi$-simultaneous proper coloring of graphs with maximum degree $4$ is investigated and they conjectured that for any graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\geq 2$, $vi$-simultaneous proper coloring of $G$ is at most $2Δ+1$. In [M. Mozafari-Nia, M. N. Iradmusa, Simultaneous coloring of vertices and incidences of graphs, arXiv:2205.07189, 2022] the correctness of the conjecture for some classes of graphs such as $k$-degenerated graphs, cycles, forests, complete graphs, regular bipartite graphs is investigated. In this paper, we prove that the $vi$-simultaneous chromatic number of any outerplanar graph $G$ is either $Δ+2$ or $Δ+3$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of $G$.

Extremal values of degree-based entropies of bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the bipartite graphs that minimize the (first-degree based) entropy, among all bipartite graphs of given size, or given size and (upper bound on the) order. The extremal graphs turn out to be complete bipartite graphs, or nearly complete bipartite. Here we make use of an equivalent representation of bipartite graphs by means of Young tableaux, which make it easier to compare the entropy of related graphs. We conclude that the general characterization of the extremal graphs is a difficult problem, due to its connections with number theory, but they are easy to find for specific values of the order $n$ and size $m$. We also give a direct argument to characterize the graphs maximizing the entropy given order and size. We indicate that some of our ideas extend to other degree-based topological indices as well.
Min orderings and list homomorphism dichotomies for signed and unsigned graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The CSP dichotomy conjecture has been recently established, but a number of other dichotomy questions remain open, including the dichotomy classification of list homomorphism problems for signed graphs. Signed graphs arise naturally in many contexts, including for instance nowhere-zero flows for graphs embedded in non-orientable surfaces. For a fixed signed graph $\widehat{H}$, the list homomorphism problem asks whether an input signed graph $\widehat{G}$ with lists $L(v) \subseteq V(\widehat{H}), v \in V(\widehat{G}),$ admits a homomorphism $f$ to $\widehat{H}$ with all $f(v) \in L(v), v \in V(\widehat{G})$. Usually, a dichotomy classification is easier to obtain for list homomorphisms than for homomorphisms, but in the context of signed graphs a structural classification of the complexity of list homomorphism problems has not even been conjectured, even though the classification of the complexity of homomorphism problems is known. Kim and Siggers have conjectured a structural classification in the special case of ``weakly balanced" signed graphs. We confirm their conjecture for reflexive and irreflexive signed graphs; this generalizes previous results on weakly balanced signed trees, and weakly balanced separable signed graphs \cite{separable,trees}. In the reflexive case, the result was first presented in \cite{KS}, with the proof using some of our results included in this paper. In fact, here we present our full proof, as an alternative to the proof in \cite{KS}. In particular, we provide direct polynomial algorithms where previously algorithms relied on general dichotomy theorems. The irreflexive results are new, and their proof depends on first deriving a theorem on extensions of min orderings of (unsigned) bipartite graphs, which is interesting on its own. Sparse graphs with bounded induced cycle packing number have logarithmic treewidth
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 167 (2024), 215-249 • View PublicationBIB
A graph is $\mathcal{O}_k$-free if it does not contain $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint and non-adjacent cycles. We prove that "sparse" (here, not containing large complete bipartite graphs as subgraphs) $\mathcal{O}_k$-free graphs have treewidth (even, feedback vertex set number) at most logarithmic in the number of vertices. This is optimal, as there is an infinite family of $\mathcal{O}_2$-free graphs without $K_{2,3}$ as a subgraph and whose treewidth is (at least) logarithmic. Using our result, we show that Maximum Independent Set and 3-Coloring in $\mathcal{O}_k$-free graphs can be solved in quasi-polynomial time. Other consequences include that most of the central NP-complete problems (such as Maximum Independent Set, Minimum Vertex Cover, Minimum Dominating Set, Minimum Coloring) can be solved in polynomial time in sparse $\mathcal{O}_k$-free graphs, and that deciding the $\mathcal{O}_k$-freeness of sparse graphs is polynomial time solvable.

Antifactors in bipartite multigraphs
Let $G$ be a $q$-regular bipartite graph with bipartition $(U,V)$. It was proved by Lu, Wang, and Yan in 2020 that $G$ has a spanning subgraph $H$ such that each vertex of $U$ has degree 1 in $H$, and each vertex of $V$ has degree distinct from 1 in $H$. We extend the result to multigraphs, under the condition that $q$ is a prime power and the number of perfect matchings of $G$ is not divisible by $q$. The condition on the number of perfect matchings is necessary for multigraphs. We conclude with a conjecture on the limiting distribution of the number of perfect matchings modulo $q$ in a random bipartite $q$-regular graph.

A unified combinatorial view beyond some spectral properties

Let $β>0$. Motivated by jumbled graphs defined by Thomason, the celebrated expander mixing lemma and Haemers's vertex separation inequality, we define that a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices is a weakly $(n,β)$-graph if $\frac{|X| |Y|}{(n-|X|)(n-|Y|)} \le β^2$ holds for every pair of disjoint proper subsets $X, Y$ of $V(G)$ with no edge between $X$ and $Y$, and it is an $(n,β)$-graph if in addition $X$ and $Y$ are not necessarily disjoint. Our main results include the following. (i) For any weakly $(n,β)$-graph $G$, the matching number $α'(G)\ge \min\left\{\frac{1-β}{1+β},\, \frac{1}{2}\right\}\cdot (n-1).$ If in addition $G$ is a $(U, W)$-bipartite graph with $|W|\ge t|U|$ where $t\ge 1$, then $α'(G)\ge \min\{t(1-2β^2),1\}\cdot |U|$. (ii) For any $(n,β)$-graph $G$, $α'(G)\ge \min\left\{\frac{2-β}{2(1+β)},\, \frac{1}{2}\right\}\cdot (n-1).$ If in addition $G$ is a $(U, W)$-bipartite graph with $|W|\ge |U|$ and no isolated vertices, then $α'(G)\ge \min\{1/β^{2},1\}\cdot |U|$. (iii) If $G$ is a weakly $(n,β)$-graph for $0<β\le 1/3$ or an $(n,β)$-graph for $0<β\le 1/2$, then $G$ has a fractional perfect matching. In addition, $G$ has a perfect matching when $n$ is even and $G$ is factor-critical when $n$ is odd. (iv) For any connected $(n,β)$-graph $G$, the toughness $t(G)\ge \frac{1-β}β$. For any connected weakly $(n,β)$-graph $G$, $t(G)> \frac{5(1-β)}{11β}$ and if $n$ is large enough, then $t(G) >\left(\frac{1}{2}-\varepsilon\right)\frac{1-β}β$ for any $\varepsilon >0$.
Edge coloring of graphs of signed class 1 and 2

Recently, Behr introduced a notion of the chromatic index of signed graphs and proved that for every signed graph $(G$, $σ)$ it holds that \[ Δ(G)\leqχ'(G\text{, }σ)\leqΔ(G)+1\text{,} \] where $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$ and $χ'$ denotes its chromatic index. In general, the chromatic index of $(G$, $σ)$ depends on both the underlying graph $G$ and the signature $σ$. In the paper we study graphs $G$ for which $χ'(G$, $σ)$ does not depend on $σ$. To this aim we introduce two new classes of graphs, namely $1^\pm$ and $2^\pm$, such that graph $G$ is of class $1^\pm$ (respectively, $2^\pm$) if and only if $χ'(G$, $σ)=Δ(G)$ (respectively, $χ'(G$, $σ)=Δ(G)+1$) for all possible signatures $σ$. We prove that all wheels, necklaces, complete bipartite graphs $K_{r,t}$ with $r\neq t$ and almost all cacti graphs are of class $1^\pm$. Moreover, we give sufficient and necessary conditions for a graph to be of class $2^\pm$, i.e. we show that these graphs must have odd maximum degree and give examples of such graphs with arbitrary odd maximum degree bigger that $1$.

Left-cut-percolation and induced-Sidorenko bigraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Sidorenko bigraph is one whose density in a bigraphon $W$ is minimized precisely when $W$ is constant. Several techniques of the literature to prove the Sidorenko property consist of decomposing (typically in a tree decomposition) the bigraph into smaller building blocks with stronger properties. One prominent such technique is that of $N$-decompositions of Conlon--Lee, which uses weakly Hölder (or weakly norming) bigraphs as building blocks. In turn, to obtain weakly Hölder bigraphs, it is typical to use the chain of implications reflection bigraph $\implies$ cut-percolating bigraph $\implies$ weakly Hölder bigraph. In an earlier result by the author with Razborov, we provided a generalization of $N$-decompositions, called reflective tree decompositions, that uses much weaker building blocks, called induced-Sidorenko bigraphs, to also obtain Sidorenko bigraphs. In this paper, we show that "left-sided" versions of the concepts of reflection bigraph and cut-percolating bigraph yield a similar chain of implications: left-reflection bigraph $\implies$ left-cut-percolating bigraph $\implies$ induced-Sidorenko bigraph. We also show that under mild hypotheses, the "left-sided" analogue of the weakly Hölder property (which is also obtained via a similar chain of implications) can be used to improve bounds on another result of Conlon--Lee that roughly says that bigraphs with enough vertices on the right side of each realized degree have the Sidorenko property.
Normality and associated primes of Closed neighborhood ideals and dominating ideals

In this paper, we first give some sufficient criteria for normality of monomial ideals. As applications, we show that closed neighborhood ideals of complete bipartite graphs are normal, and hence satisfy the (strong) persistence property. We also prove that dominating ideals of complete bipartite graphs are nearly normally torsion-free. In addition, we show that dominating ideals of $h$-wheel graphs, under certain condition, are normal.

We give a Coulson integral formula and a Coulson-Jacobs formula for the $p$-Schatten energy. We use this formulas to compare the $p$-Schatten energy of different trees by using a quasiorder, and establish the maximality of paths among all trees.

In this paper we disprove a conjecture of Lidický and Murphy about the number of copies of a given graph in a $K_r$-free graph and give an alternative general conjecture. We also prove an asymptotically tight bound on the number of copies of any bipartite graph of radius at most $2$ in a triangle-free graph.

The existence of tree-connected $\{g,f\}$-factors in edge-connected graphs and tough graphs
In 1970 Lov{á}sz gave a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a factor $F$ in a graph $G$ such that for each vertex $v$, $g(v)\le d_F(v)\le f(v)$, where $g$ and $f$ are two integer-valued functions on $V(G)$ with $g\le f$. In this paper, we give a sufficient edge-connectivity condition for the existence of an $m$-tree-connected factor $H$ in a bipartite graph $G$ with bipartition $(X,Y)$ such that its complement is $m_0$-tree-connected and for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\in \{g(v),f(v)\}$, provided that for each vertex $v$, $g(v)+m_0\le \frac{1}{2}d_G(v)\le f(v)-m$ and $|f(v)-g(v)|\le k$, and there is $h(v)\in \{g(v),f(v)\}$ in which $\sum_{v\in X}h(v)=\sum_{v\in Y}h(v)$. Moreover, we generalize this result to general graphs. As an application, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of tree-connected $\{g,f\}$-factors in edge-connected graphs and tough graphs.

Highly tree-connected complementary modulo factors with bounded degrees
Let $G$ be a bipartite graph with bipartition $(X,Y)$, let $k$ be a positive integer, and let $f:V(G)\rightarrow Z_k$ be a mapping with $\sum_{v\in X}f(v) \stackrel{k}{\equiv}\sum_{v\in Y}f(v)$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is $(2m+2m_0+4k-4)$-edge-connected and $m+m_0>0$, then $G$ has an $m$-tree-connected factor $H$ such that its complement is $m_0$-tree-connected and for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\stackrel{k}{\equiv} f(v)$, and $$\lfloor\frac{d_G(v)}{2}\rfloor-(k-1)-m_0\le d_{H}(v)\le \lceil\frac{d_G(v)}{2}\rceil+k-1+m.$$ Next, we generalize this result to general graphs and derive a sufficient degree condition for a highly edge-connected general graph $G$ to have a connected factor $H$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\in \{f(v),f(v)+k\}$. Finally, we show that every $(4k-2)$-tree-connected graph admits a bipartite connected factor whose degrees are divisible by $k$.

Modulo factors with bounded degrees

Let $G$ be a bipartite graph with bipartition $(X,Y)$, let $k$ be a positive integer, and let $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{-1,\ldots, k-2\}$ be a mapping with $\sum_{v\in X}f(v) \stackrel{k}{\equiv}\sum_{v\in Y}f(v)$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is essentially $(3k-3)$-edge-connected and for each vertex $v$, $d_G(v)\ge 2k-1+f(v)$, then it admits a factor $H$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\stackrel{k}{\equiv} f(v)$, and $$\lfloor\frac{d_G(v)}{2}\rfloor-(k-1)\le d_{H}(v)\le \lceil\frac{d_G(v)}{2}\rceil+k-1.$$ Next, we generalize this result to general graphs and derive sufficient conditions for a highly edge-connected general graph $G$ to have a factor $H$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\in \{f(v),f(v)+k\}$. Finally, we show that every $(4k-1)$-edge-connected essentially $(6k-7)$-edge-connected graph admits a bipartite factor whose degrees are positive and divisible by $k$.

The maximum spectral radius of irregular bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A bipartite graph is subcubic if it is an irregular bipartite graph with maximum degree three. In this paper, we prove that the asymptotic value of maximum spectral radius over subcubic bipartite graphs of order $n$ is $3-\varTheta(\frac{π^{2}}{n^{2}})$. Our key approach is taking full advantage of the eigenvalues of certain tridiagonal matrices, due to Willms [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 30 (2008) 639--656]. Moreover, for large maximum degree, i.e., the maximum degree is at least $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$, we characterize irregular bipartite graphs with maximum spectral radius. For general maximum degree, we present an upper bound on the spectral radius of irregular bipartite graphs in terms of the order and maximum degree.

Simultaneous coloring of vertices and incidences of graphs
An $n$-subdivision of a graph $G$ is a graph constructed by replacing a path of length $n$ instead of each edge of $G$ and an $m$-power of $G$ is a graph with the same vertices as $G$ and any two vertices of $G$ at distance at most $m$ are adjacent. The graph $G^{\frac{m}{n}}$ is the $m$-power of the $n$-subdivision of $G$. In [M. N. Iradmusa, M. Mozafari-Nia, A note on coloring of $\frac{3}{3}$-power of subquartic graphs, Vol. 79, No.3, 2021] it was conjectured that the chromatic number of $\frac{3}{3}$-power of graphs with maximum degree $Δ\geq 2$ is at most $2Δ+1$. In this paper, we introduce the simultaneous coloring of vertices and incidences of graphs and show that the minimum number of colors for simultaneous proper coloring of vertices and incidences of $G$, denoted by $χ_{vi}(G)$, is equal to the chromatic number of $G^{\frac{3}{3}}$. Also by determining the exact value or the upper bound for the said parameter, we investigate the correctness of the conjecture for some classes of graphs such as $k$-degenerated graphs, cycles, forests, complete graphs, and regular bipartite graphs. In addition, we investigate the relationship between this new chromatic number and the other parameters of graphs.
Inverse of $α$-Hermitian Adjacency Matrix of a Unicyclic Bipartite Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $X$ be bipartite mixed graph and for a unit complex number $α$, $H_α$ be its $α$-hermitian adjacency matrix. If $X$ has a unique perfect matching, then $H_α$ has a hermitian inverse $H_α^{-1}$. In this paper we give a full description of the entries of $H_α^{-1}$ in terms of the paths between the vertices. Furthermore, for $α$ equals the primitive third root of unity $γ$ and for a unicyclic bipartite graph $X$ with unique perfect matching, we characterize when $H_γ^{-1}$ is $\pm 1$ diagonally similar to $γ$-hermitian adjacency matrix of a mixed graph. Through our work, we have provided a new construction for the $\pm 1$ diagonal matrix.

Interval colorings of graphs -- coordinated and unstable no-wait schedules
Published • View PublicationBIB
A proper edge-coloring of a graph is an interval coloring if the labels on the edges incident to any vertex form an interval of consecutive integers. Interval thickness s(G) of a graph G is the smallest number of interval colorable graphs edge-decomposing G. We prove that s(G)=o(n) for any graph G on n vertices. This improves the previously known bound of 2n/5 by Asratian, Casselgren, and Petrosyan. While we do not have a single example of a graph with interval thickness strictly greater than 2, we construct bipartite graphs whose interval spectrum has arbitrarily many arbitrarily large gaps. Here, an interval spectrum of a graph is the set of all integers t such that the graph has an interval coloring using t colors. Interval colorings of bipartite graphs naturally correspond to no-wait schedules, say for parent-teacher conferences, where a conversation between any teacher and any parent lasts the same amount of time. Our results imply that any such conference with $n$ participants can be coordinated in o(n) no-wait periods. In addition, we show that for any integers t and T, t<T, there is a set of pairs of parents and teachers wanting to talk to each other, such that any no-wait schedules are unstable -- they could last t hours and could last T hours, but there is no possible no-wait schedule lasting x hours if t<x<T.

Bipartite intrinsically knotted graphs with 23 edges
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is intrinsically knotted if every embedding contains a nontrivially knotted cycle. It is known that intrinsically knotted graphs have at least 21 edges and that there are exactly 14 intrinsically knotted graphs with 21 edges, in which the Heawood graph is the only bipartite graph. The authors showed that there are exactly two graphs with at most 22 edges that are minor minimal bipartite intrinsically knotted: the Heawood graph and Cousin 110 of the $E_9+e$ family. In this paper we show that there are exactly six bipartite intrinsically knotted graphs with 23 edges so that every vertex has degree 3 or more. Four among them contain the Heawood graph and the other two contain Cousin 110 of the $E_9+e$ family. Consequently, there is no minor minimal intrinsically knotted graph with 23 edges that is bipartite.
