What are the unavoidable induced subgraphs of graphs with large treewidth? It is well-known that the answer must include a complete graph, a complete bipartite graph, all subdivisions of a wall and line graphs of all subdivisions of a wall (we refer to these graphs as the "basic treewidth obstructions"). So it is natural to ask whether graphs excluding the basic treewidth obstructions as induced subgraphs have bounded treewidth. Sintiari and Trotignon answered this question in the negative. Their counterexamples, the so-called "layered wheels," contain wheels, where a wheel consists of a hole (i.e., an induced cycle of length at least four) along with a vertex with at least three neighbors in the hole. This leads one to ask whether graphs excluding wheels and the basic treewidth obstructions as induced subgraphs have bounded treewidth. This also turns out to be false due to Davies' recent example of graphs with large treewidth, no wheels and and no basic treewidth obstructions as induced subgraphs. However, in Davies' example there exist holes and vertices (outside of the hole) with two neighbors in them. Here we prove that a hole with a vertex with at least two neighbors in it is inevitable in graphs with large treewidth and no basic obstruction. Our main result is that graphs in which every vertex has at most one neighbor in every hole (that does not contain it) and with the basic treewidth obstructions excluded as induced subgraphs have bounded treewidth.

The independence number $α(G)$ and the dissociation number ${\rm diss}(G)$ of a graph $G$ are the largest orders of induced subgraphs of $G$ of maximum degree at most $0$ and at most $1$, respectively. We consider possible improvements of the obvious inequality $2α(G)\geq {\rm diss}(G)$. For connected cubic graphs $G$ distinct from $K_4$, we show $5α(G)\geq 3{\rm diss}(G)$, and describe the rich and interesting structure of the extremal graphs in detail. For bipartite graphs, and, more generally, triangle-free graphs, we also obtain improvements. For subcubic graphs though, the inequality cannot be improved in general, and we characterize all extremal subcubic graphs.

A conjecture of Luo, Tian and Wu (2022) says that for every positive integer $k$ and every finite tree $T$ with bipartition $X$ and $Y$ (denote $t = \max\{|X|,|Y |\})$, every $k$-connected bipartite graph $G$ with $δ(G) \geq k + t$ contains a subtree $T' \cong T$ such that $κ(G-V (T')) \geq k$. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for caterpillars when $k=3$ and spiders when $k\leq 3$.

Let $F$ be an $(r+1)$-color critical graph with $r\geq 2$, that is, $χ(F)=r+1$ and there is an edge $e$ in $F$ such that $χ(F-e)=r$. Gerbner recently conjectured that every $n$-vertex maximal $F$-free graph with at least $(1-\frac{1}{r})\frac{n^2}{2}- o(n^{\frac{r+1}{r}})$ edges contains an induced complete $r$-partite graph on $n-o(n)$ vertices. Let $F_{s,k}$ be a graph obtained from $s$ copies of $C_{2k+1}$ by sharing a common edge. In this paper, we show that for all $k\geq 2$ if $G$ is an $n$-vertex maximal $F_{s,k}$-free graph with at least $n^{2}/4 - o(n^{\frac{s+2}{s+1}})$ edges, then $G$ contains an induced complete bipartite graph on $n-o(n)$ vertices. We also show that it is best possible. This disproves Gerbner's conjecture for $r=2$.
A $C_{4}$-decomposition of the $λ$-fold line graph of $K_{m,n}$
The small cycle decompositions of line graph ($λ$-fold line graph) of complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs are studied by many papers. In particular, Colby and Rodger obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a $C_{4}$-decomposition of the $λ$-fold line graph of $K_{n}$, and Ganesamurthy and Paulraja completely determined the values of $n$ and $λ$ for which the $λ$-fold line graph of $K_{n}$ has a $C_{5}$-decomposition. In this paper, we obtain the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a $C_{4}$-decomposition of the $λ$-fold line graph of $K_{m,n}$.
Bunkbed conjecture for complete bipartite graphs and related classes of graphs
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a simple finite graph. The corresponding bunkbed graph $G^\pm$ consists of two copies $G^+ = (V^+,E^+),G^- = (V^-,E^-)$ of $G$ and additional edges connecting any two vertices $v_+ \in V_+,v_- \in V_-$ that are the copies of a vertex $v \in V$. The bunkbed conjecture states that for independent bond percolation on $G^\pm$, for all $v,w \in V$, it is more likely for $v_-,w_-$ to be connected than for $v_-,w_+$ to be connected. While this seems very plausible, so far surprisingly little is known rigorously. Recently the conjecture has been proved for complete graphs. Here we give a proof for complete bipartite graphs, complete graphs minus the edges of a complete subgraph, and symmetric complete $k$-partite graphs.

Let $G=(V, E)$ be a graph where $V$ and $E$ are the vertex and edge set, respectively. For two disjoint subsets $A$ and $B$, we say $A$ dominates $B$ if every vertex of $B$ is adjacent to at least one vertex of $A$. A vertex partition $π= \{V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_k\}$ of $G$ is called a \emph{transitive $k$-partition} if $V_i$ dominates $V_j$ for all $i,j$ where $1\leq i<j\leq k$. The maximum integer $k$ for which the above partition exists is called \emph{transitivity} of $G$ and it is denoted by $Tr(G)$. The \textsc{Maximum Transitivity Problem} is to find a transitive partition of a given graph with the maximum number of partitions. It was known that the decision version of \textsc{Maximum Transitivity Problem} is NP-complete for general graphs, which was proved by Hedetniemi et al. [Iterated colorings of graphs, \emph{Discrete Mathematics}, 278, 2004]. This paper first strengthens the NP-completeness result by showing that this problem remains NP-complete for perfect elimination bipartite graphs. On the other hand, we propose a linear-time algorithm for finding the transitivity of a given bipartite chain graph. We then characterize graphs with transitivity at least $t$ for any integer $t$. This result answers two open questions posed by J. T. Hedetniemi and S. T. Hedetniemi [The transitivity of a graph, \emph{J. Combin. Math. Combin. Comput}, 104, 2018].

We answer a question of Gyárfás and Sárközy from 2013 by showing that every 2-edge-coloured complete 3-uniform hypergraph can be partitioned into two monochromatic tight paths of different colours. We also give a lower bound for the number of tight paths needed to partition any 2-edge-coloured complete r-partite r-uniform hypergraph. Finally, we show that any 2-edge-coloured complete bipartite graph has a partition into a monochromatic cycle and a monochromatic path, of different colours, unless the colouring is a split colouring.
Reciprocal distance energy of complete multipartite graphs
In this paper, first we compute the energy of a special partitioned matrix under some cases. As a consequence, we obtain the reciprocal distance energy of the complete multipartite graph and also we give various other energies of complete multipartite graphs. Next, we show that among all complete k-partite graphs on n vertices, the complete split graph has minimum reciprocal distance energy and the reciprocal distance energy is maximum for the Turan graph. At last, it is shown that the reciprocal distance energy of the complete bipartite graph km,m decreases under deletion of an edge if 2\le m\le 7, whereas the reciprocal distance energy increases if 8 \le m. Also, we show that the reciprocal distance energy of the complete tripartite graph does not increase under edge deletion

It is well-known that eigenvalues of graphs can be used to describe structural properties and parameters of graphs. A theorem of Nosal states that if $G$ is a triangle-free graph with $m$ edges, then $λ(G)\le \sqrt{m}$, equality holds if and only if $G$ is a complete bipartite graph. Recently, Lin, Ning and Wu [Combin. Probab. Comput. 30 (2021)] proved a generalization for non-bipartite triangle-free graphs. Moreover, Zhai and Shu [Discrete Math. 345 (2022)] presented a further improvement. In this paper, we present an alternative method for proving the improvement by Zhai and Shu. Furthermore, the method can allow us to give a refinement on the result of Zhai and Shu for non-bipartite graphs without short odd cycles.
Bipartite graphs with no $K_6$ minor

A theorem of Mader shows that every graph with average degree at least eight has a $K_6$ minor, and this is false if we replace eight by any smaller constant. Replacing average degree by minimum degree seems to make little difference: we do not know whether all graphs with minimum degree at least seven have $K_6$ minors, but minimum degree six is certainly not enough. For every $c>0$ there are arbitrarily large graphs with average degree at least $8-c$ and minimum degree at least six, with no $K_6$ minor.
But what if we restrict ourselves to bipartite graphs? The first statement remains true: for every $c>0$ there are arbitrarily large bipartite graphs with average degree at least $8-c$ and no $K_6$ minor. But surprisingly, going to minimum degree now makes a significant difference. We will show that every bipartite graph with minimum degree at least six has a $K_6$ minor. Indeed, it is enough that every vertex in the larger part of the bipartition has degree at least six.

Partially ordered patterns (POPs) generalize the notion of classical patterns studied in the literature in the context of permutations, words, compositions and partitions. In this paper, we give a number of general, and specific enumerative results for POPs in permutations defined by bipartite graphs, substantially extending the list of known results in this direction. In particular, we completely characterize the Wilf-equivalence for patterns defined by the N-shape posets.

Given a graph $G$, the adjacency matrix and degree diagonal matrix of $G$ are denoted by $A(G)$ and $D(G)$, respectively. In 2017, Nikiforov \cite{0007} proposed the $A_α$-matrix: $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G),$ where $α\in [0, 1]$. The largest eigenvalue of this novel matrix is called the $A_α$-index of $G$. In this paper, we characterize the graphs with minimum $A_α$-index among $n$-vertex graphs with independence number $i$ for $α\in[0,1)$, where $i=1,\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor,\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil,{\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor+1},n-3,n-2,n-1,$ whereas for $i=2$ we consider the same problem for $α\in [0,\frac{3}{4}{]}.$ Furthermore, we determine the unique graph (resp. tree) on $n$ vertices with given independence number having the maximum $A_α$-index with $α\in[0,1)$, whereas for the $n$-vertex bipartite graphs with given independence number, we characterize the unique graph having the maximum $A_α$-index with $α\in[\frac{1}{2},1).$

The reconfiguration graph $\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ for the $k$-colourings of a graph $G$ has a vertex for each proper $k$-colouring of $G$, and two vertices of $\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ are adjacent precisely when those $k$-colourings differ on a single vertex of $G$. Much work has focused on bounding the maximum value of ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ over all $n$-vertex graphs $G$. We consider the analogous problems for list colourings and for correspondence colourings. We conjecture that if $L$ is a list-assignment for a graph $G$ with $|L(v)|\ge d(v)+2$ for all $v\in V(G)$, then ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_L(G)\le n(G)+μ(G)$. We also conjecture that if $(L,H)$ is a correspondence cover for a graph $G$ with $|L(v)|\ge d(v)+2$ for all $v\in V(G)$, then ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_{(L,H)}(G)\le n(G)+τ(G)$. (Here $μ(G)$ and $τ(G)$ denote the matching number and vertex cover number of $G$.) For every graph $G$, we give constructions showing that both conjectures are best possible. Our first main result proves the upper bounds (for the list and correspondence versions, respectively) ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_L(G)\le n(G)+2μ(G)$ and ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_{(L,H)}(G)\le n(G)+2τ(G)$. Our second main result proves that both conjectured bounds hold, whenever all $v$ satisfy $|L(v)|\ge 2d(v)+1$. We conclude by proving one or both conjectures for various classes of graphs such as complete bipartite graphs, subcubic graphs, cactuses, and graphs with bounded maximum average degree.
Finding Hall blockers by matrix scaling

For a given nonnegative matrix $A=(A_{ij})$, the matrix scaling problem asks whether $A$ can be scaled to a doubly stochastic matrix $D_1AD_2$ for some positive diagonal matrices $D_1,D_2$.The Sinkhorn algorithm is a simple iterative algorithm, which repeats row-normalization $A_{ij} \leftarrow A_{ij}/\sum_{j}A_{ij}$ and column-normalization $A_{ij} \leftarrow A_{ij}/\sum_{i}A_{ij}$ alternatively. By this algorithm, $A$ converges to a doubly stochastic matrix in limit if and only if the bipartite graph associated with $A$ has a perfect matching. This property can decide the existence of a perfect matching in a given bipartite graph $G$, which is identified with the $0,1$-matrix $A_G$.Linial, Samorodnitsky, and Wigderson showed that $O(n^2 \log n)$ iterations for $A_G$ decide whether $G$ has a perfect matching. Here $n$ is the number of vertices in one of the color classes of $G$. In this paper, we show an extension of this result:If $G$ has no perfect matching, then a polynomial number of the Sinkhorn iterations identifies a Hall blocker -- a vertex subset $X$ having neighbors $Γ(X)$ with $|X| > |Γ(X)|$. Specifically, we show that $O(n^2 \log n)$ iterations can identify one Hall blocker, and that further polynomial iterations can also identify all parametric Hall blockers $X$ of maximizing $(1-λ) |X| - λ|Γ(X)|$ for $λ\in [0,1]$.The former result is based on an interpretation of the Sinkhorn algorithm as alternating minimization for geometric programming. The latter is on an interpretation as alternating minimization for KL-divergence (Csiszár and Tusnády 1984, Gietl and Reffel 2013) and its limiting behavior for a nonscalable matrix (Aas 2014). We also relate the Sinkhorn limit with parametric network flow, principal partition of polymatroids, and the Dulmage-Mendelsohn decomposition of a bipartite graph.

We prove a sharp upper bound for the number of high degree differences in bipartite graphs: let $ (U, V, E)$ be a bipartite graph with $U=\{u_1, u_2, \dots, u_n\}$ and $V=\{v_1, v_2, \dots, v_n\}$; for $n\ge k>\frac{n}{2}$ we show that $\sum_{1\le i,j \le n} 1 {\Big\{|\text{deg}(u_i)-\text{deg}(v_j)|\ge k}\Big\} \le 2k(n-k).$ As a direct application we show a slightly stronger, probabilistic version of this theorem and thus confirm the Burdzy-Pitman conjecture about the maximal spread of coherent and independent distributions.
Revisiting and improving upper bounds for identifying codes

An identifying code $C$ of a graph $G$ is a dominating set of $G$ such that any two distinct vertices of $G$ have distinct closed neighbourhoods within $C$. These codes have been widely studied for over two decades. We give an improvement over all the best known upper bounds, some of which have stood for over 20 years, for identifying codes in trees, proving the upper bound of $(n+\ell)/2$, where $n$ is the order and $\ell$ is the number of leaves (pendant vertices) of the graph. In addition to being an improvement in size, the new upper bound is also an improvement in generality, as it actually holds for bipartite graphs having no twins (pairs of vertices with the same closed or open neighbourhood) of degree 2 or greater. We also show that the bound is tight for an infinite class of graphs and that there are several structurally different families of trees attaining the bound. We then use our bound to derive a tight upper bound of $2n/3$ for twin-free bipartite graphs of order $n$, and characterize the extremal examples, as $2$-corona graphs of bipartite graphs. This is best possible, as there exist twin-free graphs, and trees with twins, that need $n-1$ vertices in any of their identifying codes. We also generalize the existing upper bound of $5n/7$ for graphs of order $n$ and girth at least 5 when there are no leaves, to the upper bound $\frac{5n+2\ell}{7}$ when leaves are allowed. This is tight for the $7$-cycle $C_7$ and for all stars.
On Reconfiguration Graphs of Independent Sets under Token Sliding

An independent set of a graph $G$ is a vertex subset $I$ such that there is no edge joining any two vertices in $I$. Imagine that a token is placed on each vertex of an independent set of $G$. The $\mathsf{TS}$- ($\mathsf{TS}_k$-) reconfiguration graph of $G$ takes all non-empty independent sets (of size $k$) as its nodes, where $k$ is some given positive integer. Two nodes are adjacent if one can be obtained from the other by sliding a token on some vertex to one of its unoccupied neighbors. This paper focuses on the structure and realizability of these reconfiguration graphs. More precisely, we study two main questions for a given graph $G$: (1) Whether the $\mathsf{TS}_k$-reconfiguration graph of $G$ belongs to some graph class $\mathcal{G}$ (including complete graphs, paths, cycles, complete bipartite graphs, connected split graphs, maximal outerplanar graphs, and complete graphs minus one edge) and (2) If $G$ satisfies some property $\mathcal{P}$ (including $s$-partitedness, planarity, Eulerianity, girth, and the clique's size), whether the corresponding $\mathsf{TS}$- ($\mathsf{TS}_k$-) reconfiguration graph of $G$ also satisfies $\mathcal{P}$, and vice versa. Additionally, we give a decomposition result for splitting a $\mathsf{TS}_k$-reconfiguration graph into smaller pieces.
10 Problems for Partitions of Triangle-free Graphs

We will state 10 problems, and solve some of them, for partitions in triangle-free graphs related to Erdős' Sparse Half Conjecture. Among others we prove the following variant of it: For every sufficiently large even integer $n$ the following holds. Every triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices has a partition $V(G)=A\cup B$ with $|A|=|B|=n/2$ such that $e(G[A])+e(G[B])\leq n^2/16$. This result is sharp since the complete bipartite graph with class sizes $3n/4$ and $n/4$ achieves equality, when $n$ is a multiple of 4.
Additionally, we discuss similar problems for $K_4$-free graphs.
On spanning tree edge denpendences of graphs

Let $τ(G)$ and $τ_G(e)$ be the number of spanning trees of a connected graph $G$ and the number of spanning trees of $G$ containing edge $e$. The ratio $d_{G}(e)=τ_{G}(e)/τ(G)$ is called the spanning tree edge density of $e$, or simply density of $e$. The maximum density $\mbox{dep}(G)=\max\limits_{e\in E(G)}d_{G}(e)$ is called the spanning tree edge dependence of $G$, or simply dependence of $G$. Given a rational number $p/q\in (0,1)$, if there exists a graph $G$ and an edge $e\in E(G)$ such that $d_{G}(e)=p/q$, then we say the density $p/q$ is constructible. More specially, if there exists a graph $G$ such that $\mbox{dep}(G)=p/q$, then we say the dependence $p/q$ is constructible. In 2002, Ferrara, Gould, and Suffel raised the open problem of which rational densities and dependences are constructible. In 2016, Kahl provided constructions that show all rational densities and dependences are constructible. Moreover, He showed that all rational densities are constructible even if $G$ is restricted to bipartite graphs or planar graphs. He thus conjectured that all rational dependences are also constructible even if $G$ is restricted to bipartite graphs (Conjecture 1), or planar graphs (Conjecture 2). In this paper, by combinatorial and electric network approach, firstly, we show that all rational dependences are constructible via bipartite graphs, which confirms the first conjecture of Kahl. Secondly, we show that all rational dependences are constructible for planar multigraphs, which confirms Kahl's second conjecture for planar multigraphs. However, for (simple) planar graphs, we disprove the second conjecture of Kahl by showing that the dependence of any planar graph is larger than $\frac{1}{3}$. On the other hand, we construct a family of planar graphs that show all rational dependences $p/q>\frac{1}{2}$ are constructible via planar graphs.
