We solve the monomer-dimer problem on a non-bipartite lattice, the simple quartic lattice with cylindrical boundary conditions, with a single monomer residing on the boundary. Due to the non-bipartite nature of the lattice, the well-known method of a Temperley bijection of solving single-monomer problems cannot be used. In this paper we derive the solution by mapping the problem onto one on close-packed dimers on a related lattice. Finite-size analysis of the solution is carried out. We find from asymptotic expansions of the free energy that the central charge in the logarithmic conformal field theory assumes the value $c=-2$.
High-Dimensional Lipschitz Functions are Typically Flat

A homomorphism height function on the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{Z}_n^d$ is a function taking integer values on the vertices of the torus with consecutive integers assigned to adjacent vertices. A Lipschitz height function is defined similarly but may also take equal values on adjacent vertices. In each model, we consider the uniform distribution over such functions, subject to boundary conditions. We prove that in high dimensions, with zero boundary values, a typical function is very flat, having bounded variance at any fixed vertex and taking at most $C(\log n)^{1/d}$ values with high probability. Our results extend to any dimension $d\ge 2$, if $\mathbb{Z}_n^d$ is replaced by an enhanced version of it, the torus $\mathbb{Z}_n^d\times\mathbb{Z}_2^{d_0}$ for some fixed $d_0$. This establishes one side of a conjectured roughening transition in $2$ dimensions. The full transition is established for a class of tori with non-equal side lengths. We also find that when $d$ is taken to infinity while $n$ remains fixed, a typical function takes at most $r$ values with high probability, where $r=5$ for the homomorphism model and $r=4$ for the Lipschitz model. Suitable generalizations are obtained when $n$ grows with $d$. Our results apply also to the related model of uniform 3-coloring and establish, for certain boundary conditions, that a uniformly sampled proper 3-coloring of $\mathbb{Z}_n^d$ will be nearly constant on either the even or odd sub-lattice.
Our proofs are based on a combinatorial transformation and on a careful analysis of the properties of a class of cutsets which we term odd cutsets. For the Lipschitz model, our results rely also on a bijection of Yadin. This work generalizes results of Galvin and Kahn, refutes a conjecture of Benjamini, Yadin and Yehudayoff and answers a question of Benjamini, Häggström and Mossel.

The Razumov-Stroganov conjecture relates the ground-state coefficients in the even-length dense O(1) loop model to the enumeration of fully-packed loop configuration on the square, with alternating boundary conditions, refined according to the link pattern for the boundary points. Here we prove this conjecture, by mean of purely combinatorial methods. The main ingredient is a generalization of the Wieland proof technique for the dihedral symmetry of these classes, based on the `gyration' operation, whose full strength we will investigate in a companion paper.
On the non-ergodicity of the Swendsen-Wang-Kotecky algorithm on the kagome lattice

We study the properties of the Wang-Swendsen-Kotecky cluster Monte Carlo algorithm for simulating the 3-state kagome-lattice Potts antiferromagnet at zero temperature. We prove that this algorithm is not ergodic for symmetric subsets of the kagome lattice with fully periodic boundary conditions: given an initial configuration, not all configurations are accessible via Monte Carlo steps. The same conclusion holds for single-site dynamics.

We present an explicit solution of the $A_r$ $T$-system for arbitrary boundary conditions. For each boundary, this is done by constructing a network, i.e. a graph with positively weighted edges, and the solution is expressed as the partition function for a family of non-intersecting paths on the network. This proves in particular the positive Laurent property, namely that the solutions are all Laurent polynomials of the initial data with non-negative integer coefficients.

We study, using transfer-matrix methods, the partition-function zeros of the square-lattice q-state Potts antiferromagnet at zero temperature (= square-lattice chromatic polynomial) for the special boundary conditions that are obtained from an m x n grid with free boundary conditions by adjoining one new vertex adjacent to all the sites in the leftmost column and a second new vertex adjacent to all the sites in the rightmost column. We provide numerical evidence that the partition-function zeros are becoming dense everywhere in the complex q-plane outside the limiting curve B_\infty(sq) for this model with ordinary (e.g. free or cylindrical) boundary conditions. Despite this, the infinite-volume free energy is perfectly analytic in this region.
Rigidity of quasicrystallic and Z^γ-circle patterns

The uniqueness of the orthogonal Z^γ-circle patterns as studied by Bobenko and Agafonov is shown, given the combinatorics and some boundary conditions. Furthermore we study (infinite) rhombic embeddings in the plane which are quasicrystallic, that is they have only finitely many different edge directions. Bicoloring the vertices of the rhombi and adding circles with centers at vertices of one of the colors and radius equal to the edge length leads to isoradial quasicrystallic circle patterns. We prove for a large class of such circle patterns which cover the whole plane that they are uniquely determined up to affine transformations by the combinatorics and the intersection angles. Combining these two results, we obtain the rigidity of large classes of quasicrystallic Z^γ-circle patterns.

We consider a partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) on a finite number of sites with open and directed boundary conditions. Its partition function was calculated by Blythe, Evans, Colaiori, and Essler. It is known to be a generating function of permutation tableaux by the combinatorial interpretation of Corteel and Williams.
We prove bijectively two new combinatorial interpretations. The first one is in terms of weighted Motzkin paths called Laguerre histories and is obtained by refining a bijection of Foata and Zeilberger. Secondly we show that this partition function is the generating function of permutations with respect to right-to-left minima, right-to-left maxima, ascents, and 31-2 patterns, by refining a bijection of Francon and Viennot.
Then we give a new formula for the partition function which generalizes the one of Blythe & al. It is proved in two combinatorial ways. The first proof is an enumeration of lattice paths which are known to be a solution of the Matrix Ansatz of Derrida & al. The second proof relies on a previous enumeration of rook placements, which appear in the combinatorial interpretation of a related normal ordering problem. We also obtain a closed formula for the moments of Al-Salam-Chihara polynomials.
Norm of Bethe Wave Function as a Determinant
This is a historical note. Bethe Ansatz solvable models are considered, for example XXZ Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet and Bose gas with delta interaction. Periodic boundary conditions lead to Bethe equation. The square of the norm of Bethe wave function is equal to a determinant of linearized system of Bethe equations (determinant of matrix of second derivatives of Yang action). The proof was first published in Communications in Mathematical Physics, vol 86, page 391 in l982. Also domain wall boundary conditions for 6 vertex model were discovered in the same paper [see Appendix D]. These play an important role for algebraic combinatorics: alternating sign matrices, domino tiling and plane partition. Many publications are devoted to six vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions.

We study the partition function for the three-colour model with domain wall boundary conditions. We express it in terms of certain special polynomials, which can be constructed recursively. Our method generalizes Kuperberg's proof of the alternating sign matrix theorem, replacing the six-vertex model used by Kuperberg with the eight-vertex-solid-on-solid model. As applications, we obtain some combinatorial results on three-colourings. We also conjecture an explicit formula for the free energy of the model.
Factorial Schur functions via the six vertex model
For a particular set of Boltzmann weights and a particular boundary condition for the six vertex model in statistical mechanics, we compute explicitly the partition function and show it to be equal to a factorial Schur function, giving a new proof of a theorem of Lascoux.

We study an integrable vertex model with a periodic boundary condition associated with U_q(A_n^{(1)}) at the crystallizing point q=0. It is an (n+1)-state cellular automaton describing the factorized scattering of solitons. The dynamics originates in the commuting family of fusion transfer matrices and generalizes the ultradiscrete Toda/KP flow corresponding to the periodic box-ball system. Combining Bethe ansatz and crystal theory in quantum group, we develop an inverse scattering/spectral formalism and solve the initial value problem based on several conjectures. The action-angle variables are constructed representing the amplitudes and phases of solitons. By the direct and inverse scattering maps, separation of variables into solitons is achieved and nonlinear dynamics is transformed into a straight motion on a tropical analogue of the Jacobi variety. We decompose the level set into connected components under the commuting family of time evolutions and identify each of them with the set of integer points on a torus. The weight multiplicity formula derived from the q=0 Bethe equation acquires an elegant interpretation as the volume of the phase space expressed by the size and multiplicity of these tori. The dynamical period is determined as an explicit arithmetical function of the n-tuple of Young diagrams specifying the level set. The inverse map, i.e., tropical Jacobi inversion is expressed in terms of a tropical Riemann theta function associated with the Bethe ansatz data. As an application, time average of some local variable is calculated.

We give the path model solution for the cluster algebra variables of the $A_r$ $T$-system with generic boundary conditions. The solutions are partition functions of (strongly) non-intersecting paths on weighted graphs. The graphs are the same as those constructed for the $Q$-system in our earlier work, and depend on the seed or initial data in terms of which the solutions are given. The weights are "time-dependent" where "time" is the extra parameter which distinguishes the $T$-system from the $Q$-system, usually identified as the spectral parameter in the context of representation theory. The path model is alternatively described on a graph with non-commutative weights, and cluster mutations are interpreted as non-commutative continued fraction rearrangements. As a consequence, the solution is a positive Laurent polynomial of the seed data.
Weighted Graph Colorings

We study two weighted graph coloring problems, in which one assigns $q$ colors to the vertices of a graph such that adjacent vertices have different colors, with a vertex weighting $w$ that either disfavors or favors a given color. We exhibit a weighted chromatic polynomial $Ph(G,q,w)$ associated with this problem that generalizes the chromatic polynomial $P(G,q)$. General properties of this polynomial are proved, and illustrative calculations for various families of graphs are presented. We show that the weighted chromatic polynomial is able to distinguish between certain graphs that yield the same chromatic polynomial. We give a general structural formula for $Ph(G,q,w)$ for lattice strip graphs $G$ with periodic longitudinal boundary conditions. The zeros of $Ph(G,q,w)$ in the $q$ and $w$ planes and their accumulation sets in the limit of infinitely many vertices of $G$ are analyzed. Finally, some related weighted graph coloring problems are mentioned.

The problem of the form of the `arctic' curve of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions in its disordered regime is addressed. It is well-known that in the scaling limit the model exhibits phase-separation, with regions of order and disorder sharply separated by a smooth curve, called the arctic curve. To find this curve, we study a multiple integral representation for the emptiness formation probability, a correlation function devised to detect spatial transition from order to disorder. We conjecture that the arctic curve, for arbitrary choice of the vertex weights, can be characterized by the condition of condensation of almost all roots of the corresponding saddle-point equations at the same, known, value. In explicit calculations we restrict to the disordered regime for which we have been able to compute the scaling limit of certain generating function entering the saddle-point equations. The arctic curve is obtained in parametric form and appears to be a non-algebraic curve in general; it turns into an algebraic one in the so-called root-of-unity cases. The arctic curve is also discussed in application to the limit shape of $q$-enumerated (with $0<q\leq 4$) large alternating sign matrices. In particular, as $q\to 0$ the limit shape tends to a nontrivial limiting curve, given by a relatively simple equation.

We analyze the quantum ground state structure of a specific model of itinerant, strongly interacting lattice fermions. The interactions are tuned to make the model supersymmetric. Due to this, quantum ground states are in one-to-one correspondence with cohomology classes of the so-called independence complex of the lattice. Our main result is a complete description of the cohomology, and thereby of the quantum ground states, for a two-dimensional square lattice with periodic boundary conditions. Our work builds on results by J. Jonsson, who determined the Euler characteristic (Witten index) via a correspondence with rhombus tilings of the plane. We prove a theorem, first conjectured by P. Fendley, which relates dimensions of the cohomology at grade n to the number of rhombus tilings with n rhombi.
Domino tilings with diagonal impurities
This paper studies the dimer model on the dual graph of the square-octagon lattice, which can be viewed as the domino tilings with impurities in some sense. In particular, under a certain boundary condition, we give an exact formula representing the probability of finding an impurity at a given site in a uniformly random dimer configuration in terms of simple random walks on the square lattice.
Asymptotic energy of graphs

The energy of a simple graph $G$ arising in chemical physics, denoted by $\mathcal E(G)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of eigenvalues of $G$. We consider the asymptotic energy per vertex (say asymptotic energy) for lattice systems. In general for a type of lattice in statistical physics, to compute the asymptotic energy with toroidal, cylindrical, Mobius-band, Klein-bottle, and free boundary conditions are different tasks with different hardness. In this paper, we show that if $\{G_n\}$ is a sequence of finite simple graphs with bounded average degree and $\{G_n'\}$ a sequence of spanning subgraphs of $\{G_n\}$ such that almost all vertices of $G_n$ and $G_n'$ have the same degrees, then $G_n$ and $G_n'$ have the same asymptotic energy. Thus, for each type of lattices with toroidal, cylindrical, Mobius-band, Klein-bottle, and free boundary conditions, we have the same asymptotic energy. As applications, we obtain the asymptotic formulae of energies per vertex of the triangular, $3^3.4^2$, and hexagonal lattices with toroidal, cylindrical, Mobius-band, Klein-bottle, and free boundary conditions simultaneously.
