Eigenvalue bracketing for discrete and metric graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop eigenvalue estimates for the Laplacians on discrete and metric graphs using different types of boundary conditions at the vertices of the metric graph. Via an explicit correspondence of the equilateral metric and discrete graph spectrum (also in the ``exceptional'' values of the metric graph corresponding to the Dirichlet spectrum) we carry over these estimates from the metric graph Laplacian to the discrete case. We apply the results to covering graphs and present examples where the covering graph Laplacians have spectral gaps.

Q-systems as cluster algebras II: Cartan matrix of finite type and the polynomial property
Published in Lett.Math.Phys.89:183-216,2009 • View Publication • BIB
We define the cluster algebra associated with the Q-system for the Kirillov-Reshetikhin characters of the quantum affine algebra $U_q(\hat{\g})$ for any simple Lie algebra g, generalizing the simply-laced case treated in [Kedem 2007]. We describe some special properties of this cluster algebra, and explain its relation to the deformed Q-systems which appeared on our proof of the combinatorial-KR conjecture. We prove that the polynomiality of the cluster variables in terms of the ``initial cluster seeds'', including solutions of the Q-system, is a consequence of the Laurent phenomenon and the boundary conditions. We also give a formulation of both Q-systems and generalized T-systems as cluster algebras with coefficients. This provides a proof of the polynomiality of solutions of generalized T-systems with appropriate boundary conditions.

An Izergin-Korepin-type identity for the 8VSOS model, with applications to alternating sign matrices
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 43 (2009), 137-155 • View Publication • BIB
We obtain a new expression for the partition function of the 8VSOS model with domain wall boundary conditions, which we consider to be the natural extension of the Izergin-Korepin formula for the six-vertex model. As applications, we find dynamical (in the sense of the dynamical Yang-Baxter equation) generalizations of the enumeration and 2-enumeration of alternating sign matrices. The dynamical enumeration has a nice interpretation in terms of three-colourings of the square lattice.

Close-packed dimers on the kagome lattice: Finite lattices and the Grassmannian approach
Published in Physica A 387, 4148 (2008); Physica A 387, 4157 (2008) • View Publication • BIB
In a recent paper [ F. Wang and F. Y. Wu, Phys. Rev. E 75 (2007) 040105(R) ] we reported exact results on the enumeration of close-packed dimers on an infinite kagome lattice. We computed the per-dimer free energy using both the Pfaffian approach and a vertex-model formulation, and found the result given by a simple expression. We also reported results on dimer-dimer correlations without giving details. In this paper we present details of the correlation function analysis. In addition, we extend the exact enumeration to finite lattices under two different boundary conditions and with asymmetric dimer weights. For symmetric dimer weights the finite-lattice results are again simple, and we show that they can be understood using a spin variable mapping. We also describe the formulation of a Grassmannian functional integral approach and apply it to the kagome lattice.

Transfer Matrices and Partition-Function Zeros for Antiferromagnetic Potts Models. V. Further Results for the Square-Lattice Chromatic Polynomial
Published in J. Statist. Phys. 135 (2009) 279-373 • View Publication • BIB
We derive some new structural results for the transfer matrix of square-lattice Potts models with free and cylindrical boundary conditions. In particular, we obtain explicit closed-form expressions for the dominant (at large |q|) diagonal entry in the transfer matrix, for arbitrary widths m, as the solution of a special one-dimensional polymer model. We also obtain the large-q expansion of the bulk and surface (resp. corner) free energies for the zero-temperature antiferromagnet (= chromatic polynomial) through order q^{-47} (resp. q^{-46}). Finally, we compute chromatic roots for strips of widths 9 <= m <= 12 with free boundary conditions and locate roughly the limiting curves.

Factorised solutions of Temperley-Lieb $q$KZ equations on a segment
Published in Adv. Theor. Math. Phys. 14 (2010), 795-877 • View Publication • BIB
We study the q-deformed Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation in path representations of the Temperley-Lieb algebras. We consider two types of open boundary conditions, and in both cases we derive factorised expressions for the solutions of the qKZ equation in terms of Baxterised Demazurre-Lusztig operators. These expressions are alternative to known integral solutions for tensor product representations. The factorised expressions reveal the algebraic structure within the qKZ equation, and effectively reduce it to a set of truncation conditions on a single scalar function. The factorised expressions allow for an efficient computation of the full solution once this single scalar function is known. We further study particular polynomial solutions for which certain additional factorised expressions give weighted sums over components of the solution. In the homogeneous limit, we formulate positivity conjectures in the spirit of Di Francesco and Zinn-Justin. We further conjecture relations between weighted sums and individual components of the solutions for larger system sizes.

Quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation: reflecting boundary conditions and combinatorics
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the level 1 solution of quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation with reflecting boundary conditions which is relevant to the Temperley--Lieb model of loops on a strip. By use of integral formulae we prove conjectures relating it to the weighted enumeration of Cyclically Symmetric Transpose Complement Plane Partitions and related combinatorial objects.

First order approach and index theorems for discrete and metric graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The aim of the present paper is to introduce the notion of first order (supersymmetric) Dirac operators on discrete and metric (``quantum'') graphs. In order to cover all self-adjoint boundary conditions for the associated metric graph Laplacian, we develop systematically a new type of discrete graph operators acting on a decorated graph. The decoration at each vertex of degree-d is given by a subspace of $\C^d$, generalising the fact that a function on the standard vertex space has only a scalar value. We develop the notion of exterior derivative, differential forms, Dirac and Laplace operators in the discrete and metric case, using a supersymmetric framework. We calculate the (supersymmetric) index of the discrete Dirac operator generalising the standard index formula involving the Euler characteristic of a graph. Finally, we show that the corresponding index for the metric Dirac operator agrees with the discrete one.

Higher Spin Alternating Sign Matrices
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 14 (2007) Research Paper 83 • View Publication • BIB
We define a higher spin alternating sign matrix to be an integer-entry square matrix in which, for a nonnegative integer r, all complete row and column sums are r, and all partial row and column sums extending from each end of the row or column are nonnegative. Such matrices correspond to configurations of spin r/2 statistical mechanical vertex models with domain-wall boundary conditions. The case r=1 gives standard alternating sign matrices, while the case in which all matrix entries are nonnegative gives semimagic squares. We show that the higher spin alternating sign matrices of size n are the integer points of the r-th dilate of an integral convex polytope of dimension (n-1)^2 whose vertices are the standard alternating sign matrices of size n. It then follows that, for fixed n, these matrices are enumerated by an Ehrhart polynomial in r.

The Rotor Model with spectral parameters and enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the Rotor Model of Martins and Nienhuis. After introducing spectral parameters, a combined use of integrability, polynomiality of the ground state wave function and a mapping into the fully-packed O(1)-model allows us to determine the sum rule and a family of maximally nested components for different boundary conditions. We see in this way the appearance of 3-enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices.

Phase diagram of the chromatic polynomial on a torus
Published in Nucl.Phys.B783:238-296,2007 • View Publication • BIB
We study the zero-temperature partition function of the Potts antiferromagnet (i.e., the chromatic polynomial) on a torus using a transfer-matrix approach. We consider square- and triangular-lattice strips with fixed width L, arbitrary length N, and fully periodic boundary conditions. On the mathematical side, we obtain exact expressions for the chromatic polynomial of widths L=5,6,7 for the square and triangular lattices. On the physical side, we obtain the exact ``phase diagrams'' for these strips of width L and infinite length, and from these results we extract useful information about the infinite-volume phase diagram of this model: in particular, the number and position of the different phases.
On the independence complex of square grids
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics / Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics An International Journal 27 (2008) 423--450 • View Publication • BIB
The enumeration of independent sets of regular graphs is of interest in statistical mechanics, as it corresponds to the solution of hard-particle models. In 2004, it was conjectured by Fendleyet al. that for some rectangular grids, with toric boundary conditions, the alternating number of independent sets is extremely simple. More precisely, under a coprimality condition on the sides of the rectangle, the number of independent sets of even and odd cardinality always differ by 1. In physics terms, this means looking at the hard-particle model on these grids at activity -1. This conjecture was recently proved by Jonsson. Here we produce other families of grid graphs, with open or cylindric boundary conditions, for which similar properties hold without any size restriction: the number of independent sets of even and odd cardinality always differ by 0, 1,-1, or, in the cylindric case, by some power of 2. We show that these results reflect a stronger property of the independence complexes of our graphs. We determine the homotopy type of these complexes using Forman's discrete Morse theory. We find that these complexes are either contractible, or homotopic to a sphere, or, in the cylindric case, to a wedge of spheres. Finally, we use our enumerative results to determine the spectra of certain transfer matrices describing the hard-particle model on our graphs at activity -1. These results parallel certain conjectures of Fendley et al., proved by Jonsson in the toric case.

Osculating Paths and Oscillating Tableaux
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 15 (2008) Research Paper 7 • View Publication • BIB
The combinatorics of certain osculating lattice paths is studied, and a relationship with oscillating tableaux is obtained. More specifically, the paths being considered have fixed start and end points on respectively the lower and right boundaries of a rectangle in the square lattice, each path can take only unit steps rightwards or upwards, and two different paths are permitted to share lattice points, but not to cross or share lattice edges. Such paths correspond to configurations of the six-vertex model of statistical mechanics with appropriate boundary conditions, and they include cases which correspond to alternating sign matrices and various subclasses thereof. Referring to points of the rectangle through which no or two paths pass as vacancies or osculations respectively, the case of primary interest is tuples of paths with a fixed number $l$ of vacancies and osculations. It is then shown that there exist natural bijections which map each such path tuple $P$ to a pair $(t,η)$, where $η$ is an oscillating tableau of length $l$ (i.e., a sequence of $l+1$ partitions, starting with the empty partition, in which the Young diagrams of successive partitions differ by a single square), and $t$ is a certain, compatible sequence of $l$ weakly increasing positive integers. Furthermore, each vacancy or osculation of $P$ corresponds to a partition in $η$ whose Young diagram is obtained from that of its predecessor by respectively the addition or deletion of a square. These bijections lead to enumeration formulae for osculating paths involving sums over oscillating tableaux.

Loop model with mixed boundary conditions, qKZ equation and alternating sign matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The integrable loop model with mixed boundary conditions based on the 1-boundary extended Temperley--Lieb algebra with loop weight 1 is considered. The corresponding qKZ equation is introduced and its minimal degree solution described. As a result, the sum of the properly normalized components of the ground state in size L is computed and shown to be equal to the number of Horizontally and Vertically Symmetric Alternating Sign Matrices of size 2L+3. A refined counting is also considered.
Eigenvalue amplitudes of the Potts model on a torus
Published in Nuclear Physics B 769 (2007) 256-274 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the Q-state Potts model in the random-cluster formulation, defined on finite two-dimensional lattices of size L x N with toroidal boundary conditions. Due to the non-locality of the clusters, the partition function Z(L,N) cannot be written simply as a trace of the transfer matrix T\_L. Using a combinatorial method, we establish the decomposition Z(L,N) = \sum\_{l,D\_k} b^{l,D\_k} K\_{l,D\_k}, where the characters K\_{l,D\_k} = \sum\_i (λ\_i)^N are simple traces. In this decomposition, the amplitudes b^{l,D\_k} of the eigenvalues λ\_i of T\_L are labelled by the number l=0,1,...,L of clusters which are non-contractible with respect to the transfer (N) direction, and a representation D\_k of the cyclic group C\_l. We obtain rigorously a general expression for b^{l,D\_k} in terms of the characters of C\_l, and, using number theoretic results, show that it coincides with an expression previously obtained in the continuum limit by Read and Saleur.

Boundary Partitions in Trees and Dimers
Published in Trans.Am.Math.Soc.363:1325-1364, 2011 • View Publication • BIB
Given a finite planar graph, a grove is a spanning forest in which every component tree contains one or more of a specified set of vertices (called nodes) on the outer face. For the uniform measure on groves, we compute the probabilities of the different possible node connections in a grove. These probabilities only depend on boundary measurements of the graph and not on the actual graph structure, i.e., the probabilities can be expressed as functions of the pairwise electrical resistances between the nodes, or equivalently, as functions of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator (or response matrix) on the nodes. These formulae can be likened to generalizations (for spanning forests) of Cardy's percolation crossing probabilities, and generalize Kirchhoff's formula for the electrical resistance. Remarkably, when appropriately normalized, the connection probabilities are in fact integer-coefficient polynomials in the matrix entries, where the coefficients have a natural algebraic interpretation and can be computed combinatorially. A similar phenomenon holds in the so-called double-dimer model: connection probabilities of boundary nodes are polynomial functions of certain boundary measurements, and as formal polynomials, they are specializations of the grove polynomials. Upon taking scaling limits, we show that the double-dimer connection probabilities coincide with those of the contour lines in the Gaussian free field with certain natural boundary conditions. These results have direct application to connection probabilities for multiple-strand SLE_2, SLE_8, and SLE_4.

Domino tilings and the six-vertex model at its free fermion point
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 39 (2006), 10297-10306 • View Publication • BIB
At the free-fermion point, the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC) can be related to the Aztec diamond, a domino tiling problem. We study the mapping on the level of complete statistics for general domains and boundary conditions. This is obtained by associating to both models a set of non-intersecting lines in the Lindstroem-Gessel-Viennot (LGV) scheme. One of the consequence for DWBC is that the boundaries of the ordered phases are described by the Airy process in the thermodynamic limit.

The inverse scattering problem for metric graphs and the traveling salesman problem
We present a solution to the inverse scattering problem for differential Laplace operators on metric noncompact graphs. We prove that for almost all boundary conditions (i) the scattering matrix uniquely determines the graph and its metric structure, (ii) the boundary conditions are determined uniquely up to trivial gauge transformations. The main ingredient of our approach is a combinatorial Fourier expansion of the scattering matrix which encodes the topology of the graph into analytic properties of the scattering matrix. Using the technique developed in this work, we also propose an analytic approach to solving some combinatorial problems on graphs, in particular, the Traveling Salesman Problem.
