Linial arrangements and local binary search trees
We study the set of NBC sets (no broken circuit sets) of the Linial arrangement and deduce a constructive bijection to the set of local binary search trees. We then generalize this construction to two families of Linial type arrangements for which the bijections are with some $k$-ary labelled trees that we introduce for this purpose.

An Abstraction of Whitney's Broken Circuit Theorem
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 21 (2014) #P4.32 • View PublicationBIB
We establish a broad generalization of Whitney's broken circuit theorem on the chromatic polynomial of a graph to sums of type $\sum_{A\subseteq S} f(A)$ where $S$ is a finite set and $f$ is a mapping from the power set of $S$ into an abelian group. We give applications to the domination polynomial and the subgraph component polynomial of a graph, the chromatic polynomial of a hypergraph, the characteristic polynomial and Crapo's beta invariant of a matroid, and the principle of inclusion-exclusion. Thus, we discover several known and new results in a concise and unified way. As further applications of our main result, we derive a new generalization of the maximums-minimums identity and of a theorem due to Blass and Sagan on the Möbius function of a finite lattice, which generalizes Rota's crosscut theorem. For the classical Möbius function, both Euler's totient function and its Dirichlet inverse, and the reciprocal of the Riemann zeta function we obtain new expansions involving the greatest common divisor resp. least common multiple. We finally establish an even broader generalization of Whitney's broken circuit theorem in the context of convex geometries (antimatroids).

Broken circuit complexes of series-parallel networks
Published in European J. Combin. 51 (2016), 12-36 • View PublicationBIB
Let $(h_0,h_1,\ldots,h_s)$ with $h_s\ne0$ be the $h$-vector of the broken circuit complex of a series-parallel network $M$. Let $G$ be a graph whose cycle matroid is $M$. We give a formula for the difference $h_{s-1}-h_1$ in terms of an ear decomposition of $G$. A number of applications of this formula are provided, including several bounds for $h_{s-1}-h_1$, a characterization of outerplanar graphs, and a solution to a conjecture on $A$-graphs posed by Fenton. We also prove that $h_{s-2}\geq h_2$ when $s\geq 4$.

On the Gorensteinness of broken circuit complexes and Orlik--Terao ideals
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 123 (2014), no. 1, 169-185 • View PublicationBIB
It is proved that the broken circuit complex of an ordered matroid is Gorenstein if and only if it is a complete intersection. Several characterizations for a matroid that admits such an order are then given, with particular interest in the $h$-vector of broken circuit complexes of the matroid. As an application, we prove that the Orlik--Terao algebra of a hyperplane arrangement is Gorenstein if and only if it is a complete intersection. Interestingly, our result shows that the complete intersection property (and hence the Gorensteinness as well) of the Orlik--Terao algebra can be determined from the last two nonzero entries of its $h$-vector.

Broken circuit complexes and hyperplane arrangements
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 38 (2013), no. 4, 989-1016 • View PublicationBIB
We study Stanley-Reisner ideals of broken circuits complexes and characterize those ones admitting a linear resolution or being complete intersections. These results will then be used to characterize arrangements whose Orlik-Terao ideal has the same properties. As an application, we improve a result of Wilf on upper bounds for the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial of a maximal planar graph. We also show that for an ordered matroid with disjoint minimal broken circuits, the supersolvability of the matroid is equivalent to the Koszulness of its Orlik-Solomon algebra.

Decision trees, monotone functions, and semimatroids
We define decision trees for monotone functions on a simplicial complex. We define homology decidability of monotone functions, and show that various monotone functions related to semimatroids are homology decidable. Homology decidability is a generalization of semi-nonevasiveness, a notion due to Jonsson. The motivating example is the complex of bipartite graphs, whose Betti numbers are unknown in general. We show that these monotone functions have optimum decision trees, from which we can compute relative Betti numbers of related pairs of simplicial complexes. Moreover, these relative Betti numbers are coefficients of evaluations of the Tutte polynomial, and every semimatroid collapses onto its broken circuit complex.

h-Vectors of matroids and logarithmic concavity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let M be a matroid on E, representable over a field of characteristic zero. We show that h-vectors of the following simplicial complexes are log-concave: 1. The matroid complex of independent subsets of E. 2. The broken circuit complex of $M$ relative to an ordering of E. The first implies a conjecture of Colbourn on the reliability polynomial of a graph, and the second implies a conjecture of Hoggar on the chromatic polynomial of a graph. The proof is based on the geometric formula for the characteristic polynomial of Denham, Garrousian, and Schulze.

Domination Reliability
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 19 (2012), #P15 • View PublicationBIB
We propose a new network reliability measure for some particular kind of service networks, which we refer to as domination reliability. We relate this new reliability measure to the domination polynomial of a graph and the coverage probability of a hypergraph. We derive explicit and recursive formulae for domination reliability and its associated domination reliability polynomial, deduce an analogue of Whitney's broken circuit theorem, and prove that computing domination reliability is NP-hard.

A Generalization of NBC Bases to Broken Circuit Complexes of Matroids
Brown has shown that the Stanley-Reisner ring of the broken circuit complex of a graph has a linear system of parameters which is defined in terms of the circuits and cocircuits of the graph. Later on Brown and Sagan conjectured a special set of monomials - a so-called NBC basis - described in terms of the circuits and cocircuits of the graph to be a monomial basis for the corresponding quotient of the Stanley-Reisner ring and proved this to be true for theta and phi graphs. We generalize the aforementioned linear system of parameters to broken circuit complexes of regular matroids and transfer the notion of NBC bases to the general setting of regular matroids. We are able to obtain the analogous results to the ones of Brown and Sagan in this more general context. We show a deletion-contraction axiom for the existence of NBC bases. Using this results we identify two infinite classes of matroids which have NBC bases and which are the matroid theoretic analogue of theta and phi graphs.

Tableaux in the Whitney Module of a Matroid
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 63 (2010), Article B63f • Search Publication
The Whitney module of a matroid is a natural analogue of the tensor algebra of the exterior algebra of a vector space that takes into account the dependencies of a matroid. In this paper we indicate the role that tableaux can play in describing the Whitney module. We will use our results to describe a basis of the Whitney module of a certain class of matroids known as freedom matroids (also known as Schubert, or shifted matroids). The doubly multilinear submodule of the Whitney module is a representation of the symmetric group. We will describe a formula for the multiplicity of hook shapes in this representation in terms of no broken circuit sets.

Branched polymers and hyperplane arrangements
We generalize the construction of connected branched polymers and the notion of the volume of the space of connected branched polymers studied by Brydges and Imbrie, and Kenyon and Winkler to any hyperplane arrangement A. The volume of the resulting configuration space of connected branched polymers associated to the hyperplane arrangement A is expressed through the value of the characteristic polynomial of A at 0. We give a more general definition of the space of branched polymers, where we do not require connectivity, and introduce the notion of q-volume for it, which is expressed through the value of the characteristic polynomial of A at -q. Finally, we relate the volume of the space of branched polymers to broken circuits and show that the cohomology ring of the space of branched polymers is isomorphic to the Orlik-Solomon algebra.

$G$-Parking Functions, Acyclic Orientations and Spanning Trees
Published in B. Benson, D. Chakrabarty, P. Tetali. Discrete Mathematics 310 (2010) 1340-1353 • Search Publication
Given an undirected graph $G=(V,E)$, and a designated vertex $q\in V$, the notion of a $G$-parking function (with respect to $q$) was independently developed and studied by various authors, and has recently gained renewed attention. This notion generalizes the classical notion of a parking function associated with the complete graph. In this work, we study properties of {\em maximum} $G$-parking functions and provide a new bijection between them and the set of spanning trees of $G$ with no broken circuit. As a case study, we specialize some of our results to the graph corresponding to the discrete $n$-cube $Q_n$. We present the article in an expository self-contained form, since we found the combinatorial aspects of $G$-parking functions somewhat scattered in the literature, typically treated in conjunction with sandpile models and closely related chip-firing games.

Monomial Bases for Broken Circuit Complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let F be a field and let G be a finite graph with a total ordering on its edge set. Richard Stanley noted that the Stanley-Reisner ring F(G) of the broken circuit complex of G is Cohen-Macaulay. Jason Brown gave an explicit description of a homogeneous system of parameters for F(G) in terms of fundamental cocircuits in G. So F(G) modulo this hsop is a finite dimensional vector space. We conjecture an explicit monomial basis for this vector space in terms of the circuits of G and prove that the conjecture is true for two infinite families of graphs. We also explore an application of these ideas to bounding the number of acyclic orientations of G from above.

A partition of connected graphs
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 12, N1 (2005), 8pp • View PublicationBIB
We define an algorithm k which takes a connected graph G on a totally ordered vertex set and returns an increasing tree R (which is not necessarily a subtree of G). We characterize the set of graphs G such that k(G)=R. Because this set has a simple structure (it is isomorphic to a product of non-empty power sets), it is easy to evaluate certain graph invariants in terms of increasing trees. In particular, we prove that, up to sign, the coefficient of x^q in the chromatic polynomial of G is the number of increasing forests with q components that satisfy a condition that we call G-connectedness. We also find a bijection between increasing G-connected trees and broken circuit free subtrees of G.

On the geometry of graph arrangements
We use the results of AG/0406290 to discuss the counting formulas of network flow polytopes and magic squares, i.e. the formula for the corresponding Ehrhart polynomial in terms of residues. We also discuss a description of the big cells using the theory of non broken circuit bases.

A Broken Circuit Ring
Given a matroid M represented by a linear subspace L in n-space (equivalently by an arrangement of n hyperplanes in L), we define a graded ring R(L) which degenerates to the Stanley-Reisner ring of the broken circuit complex for any choice of ordering of the ground set. In particular, R(L) is Cohen-Macaulay, and may be used to compute the h-vector of the broken circuit complex of M. We give a geometric interpretation of Spec R(L), as well as a stratification indexed by the flats of M.

Lower bounds for h-vectors of k-CM, independence and broken circuit complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a number of lower bounds for the h-vectors of k-CM, broken circuit and independence complexes. These lead to bounds on the coefficients of the characteristic and reliability polynomials of matroids. The main techniques are the use of series and parallel constructions on matroids and the short simplicial h-vector for pure complexes.

Diagonal bases in Orlik-Solomon type algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
To encode an important property of the "no broken circuit bases" of the Orlik-Solomon-Terao algebras, Andras Szenes has introduced a particular type of bases, the so called "diagonal basis". We prove that this definition extends naturally to a large class of algebras, the so called chi-algebras. Our definitions make also use of an "iterative residue formula" based on the matroidal operation of contraction. This formula can be seen as the combinatorial analogue of an iterative residue formula introduced by Szenes. As an application we deduce nice formulas to express a pure element in a diagonal basis.

Groebner and diagonal bases in Orlik-Solomon type algebras
The Orlik-Solomon algebra of a matroid M is the quotient of the exterior algebra on the points by the ideal I(M) generated by the boundaries of the circuits of the matroid. There is an isomorphism between the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a complex matroid and the cohomology of the complement of a complex arrangement of hyperplanes. In this article a generalization of the Orlik-Solomon algebras, called X-algebras, are considered. These new algebras include, apart from the Orlik-Solomon algebras, the Orlik-Solomon-Terao algebra of a set of vectors and the Cordovil algebra of an oriented matroid. To encode an important property of the "no broken circuit bases" of the Orlik-Solomon-Terao algebras, Andras Szenes has introduced a particular type of bases, the so called "diagonal bases". This notion extends naturally to X-algebras. We give a survey of the results obtained by the authors concerning the construction of Groebner bases of I(M) and diagonal bases of Orlik-Solomon type algebras and we present the combinatorial analogue of an ``iterative residue formula'' introduced by Szenes.
