Symbolic powers of polymatroidal ideals
In this paper, we investigate the componentwise linearity and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of symbolic powers of polymatroidal ideals. For a polymatroidal ideal $I$, we conjecture that every symbolic power $I^{(k)}$ is componentwise linear and $$ \text{reg}\,I^{(k)}=\text{reg}\,I^k $$ for all $k \ge 1$. We prove that $\text{reg}\,I^{(k)}\ge\text{reg}\,I^k$ for all $k \ge 1$ when $I$ has no embedded associated primes, for instance if $I$ is a matroidal ideal. Moreover, we establish a criterion on the symbolic Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}_s(I)$ of a monomial ideal of minimal intersection type which guarantees that every symbolic power $I^{(k)}$ has linear quotients and, hence, is componentwise linear for all $k\ge1$. By applying our criterion to squarefree Veronese ideals and certain matching-matroidal ideals, we verify both conjectures for these families. We establish the Conforti-Cornuéjols conjecture for any matroidal ideal, and we show that a matroidal ideal is packed if and only if it is the product of monomial prime ideals with pairwise disjoint supports. Furthermore, we identify several classes of non-squarefree polymatroidal ideals for which the ordinary and symbolic powers coincide. Hence, we confirm our conjectures for transversal polymatroidal ideals and principal Borel ideals. Finally, we verify our conjectures for all polymatroidal ideals either generated in small degrees or in a small number of variables.
Chordal bipartite graphs, biclique vertex partitions and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $1$-subdivision graphs
A biclique in a graph $G$ is a complete bipartite subgraph (not necessarily induced), and the least positive integer $k$ for which the vertex set of $G$ can be partitioned into at most $k$ bicliques is the biclique vertex partition number $bp(G)$ of $G$. We prove that the inequality $reg(S(G))\geq |G|-bp(G)$ holds for every graph $G$, where $S(G)$ is the $1$-subdivision graph of $G$ and $reg(S(G))$ denotes the (Castelnuovo-Mumford) regularity of the graph $S(G)$. In particular, we show that the equality $reg(S(B))=|B|-bp(B)$ holds provided that $B$ is a chordal bipartite graph. Furthermore, for every chordal bipartite graph $B$, we prove that the independence complex of $S(B)$ is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a sphere, and provide a polynomial time checkable criteria for when it is contractible, and describe the dimension of the sphere when it is not.
Regularity of two classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals
Some recent investigations indicate that for the classification of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals, it suffices to consider biconnected graphs with some whiskers attached (in short, `block with whiskers'). This paper provides explicit combinatorial formulae for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of two specific classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals: (i) chain of cycles with whiskers and (ii) $r$-regular $r$-connected block with whiskers. For the first type, we introduce a new invariant of graphs in terms of the number of blocks in certain induced block graphs, and this invariant may help determine the regularity of other classes of binomial edge ideals. For the second type, we present the formula as a linear function of $r$.
Degrees of P-Grothendieck polynomials and regularity of Pfaffian varieties
We prove a formula for the degrees of Ikeda and Naruse's $P$-Grothendieck polynomials using combinatorics of shifted tableaux. We show this formula can be used in conjunction with results of Hamaker, Marberg, and Pawlowski to obtain an upper bound on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of certain Pfaffian varieties known as vexillary skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties. Similar combinatorics additionally yields a new formula for the degree of Grassmannian Grothendieck polynomials and the regularity of Grassmannian matrix Schubert varieties, complementing a 2021 formula of Rajchgot, Ren, Robichaux, St. Dizier, and Weigandt.
Grothendieck polynomials of inverse fireworks permutations
Pipedreams are combinatorial objects that compute Grothendieck polynomials. We introduce a new combinatorial object that naturally recast the pipedream formula. From this, we obtain the first direct combinatorial formula for the top degree components of Grothendieck polynomials, also known as the Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials. We also prove the inverse fireworks case of a conjecture of Mészáros, Setiabrata, and St. Dizier on the support of Grothendieck polynomials.
Dao numbers and the asymptotic behaviour of fullness
In the present paper, we study the Dao numbers $\mathfrak{d}_1(I),\mathfrak{d}_2(I)$ and $\mathfrak{d}_3(I)$ of an ideal $I$ of a Noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m},K)$ or a standard graded Noetherian $K$-algebra. They are defined as the smallest $\ell\ge0$ such that $I\mathfrak{m}^k$ is $\mathfrak{m}$-full, full, weakly $\mathfrak{m}$-full, respectively, for all $k\ge\ell$. We provide general bounds for the Dao numbers in terms of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of certain modules over the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(\mathfrak{m})$. If $R$ is a Koszul algebra, we prove that the Dao numbers are less or equal to $\text{reg}_{\text{gr}_\mathfrak{m}(R)}\text{gr}_\mathfrak{m}(I)$, where $\text{gr}_\mathfrak{m}(I)$ is the associated graded module of $I$. Finally, for monomial ideals, we combinatorially bound the Dao numbers in terms of asymptotic linear quotients and bounding multidegrees.

Let $G$ be a finite simple graph and let $NI(G)$ denote the closed neighborhood ideal of $G$ in a polynomial ring $R$. We show that if $G$ is a forest, then the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $R/NI(G)$ is the same as the matching number of $G$, thus proving a conjecture of Sharifan and Moradi in the affirmative. We also show that the matching number of $G$ provides a lower bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $R/NI(G)$ for any $G$. Furthermore, we prove that, if $G$ contains a simplicial vertex, then $NI(G)$ admits a Betti splitting, and consequently, we show that the projective dimension of $R/NI(G)$ is also bounded below by the matching number of $G$, if $G$ is a forest or a unicyclic graph.

We study three invariants of geometrically vertex decomposable ideals: the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, the multiplicity, and the $a$-invariant. We show that these invariants can be computed recursively using the ideals that appear in the geometric vertex decomposition process. As an application, we prove that the $a$-invariant of a geometrically vertex decomposable ideal is non-positive. We also recover some previously known results in the literature including a formula for the regularity of the Stanley--Reisner ideal of a pure vertex decomposable simplicial complex, and proofs that some well-known families of ideals are Hilbertian. Finally, we apply our recursions to the study of toric ideals of bipartite graphs. Included among our results on this topic is a new proof for a known bound on the $a$-invariant of a toric ideal of a bipartite graph.
On the $\mathrm{v}$-number of Gorenstein ideals and Frobenius powers
In this paper, we show the equality of the (local) $\mathrm{v}$-number and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of certain classes of Gorenstein algebras, including the class of Gorenstein monomial algebras. Also, for the same classes of algebras with the assumption of level, we show that the (local) $\mathrm{v}$-number serves as an upper bound for the regularity. Moreover, we investigate the $\mathrm{v}$-number of Frobenius powers of graded ideals in prime characteristic setup. In this study, we demonstrate that the $\mathrm{v}$-numbers of Frobenius powers of graded ideals have an asymptotically linear behaviour. In the case of unmixed monomial ideals, we provide a method for computing the $\mathrm{v}$-number without prior knowledge of the associated primes.
Strong Algebras and Radical Sylvester-Gallai Configurations
In this paper, we prove the following non-linear generalization of the classical Sylvester-Gallai theorem. Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and $\mathcal{F}=\{F_1,\cdots,F_m\} \subset \mathbb{K}[x_1,\cdots,x_N]$ be a set of irreducible homogeneous polynomials of degree at most $d$ such that $F_i$ is not a scalar multiple of $F_j$ for $i\neq j$. Suppose that for any two distinct $F_i,F_j\in \mathcal{F}$, there is $k\neq i,j$ such that $F_k\in \mathrm{rad}(F_i,F_j)$. We prove that such radical SG configurations must be low dimensional. More precisely, we show that there exists a function $λ: \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$, independent of $\mathbb{K},N$ and $m$, such that any such configuration $\mathcal{F}$ must satisfy
$$ \dim (\mathrm{span}_{\mathbb{K}}{\mathcal{F}}) \leq λ(d). $$
Our result confirms a conjecture of Gupta [Gup14, Conjecture 2] and generalizes the quadratic and cubic Sylvester-Gallai theorems of [S20,OS22]. Our result takes us one step closer towards the first deterministic polynomial time algorithm for the Polynomial Identity Testing (PIT) problem for depth-4 circuits of bounded top and bottom fanins. Our result, when combined with the Stillman uniformity type results of [AH20a,DLL19,ESS21], yields uniform bounds for several algebraic invariants such as projective dimension, Betti numbers and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of ideals generated by radical SG configurations.
On the rook polynomial of grid polyominoes
We investigate the algebraic properties of the coordinate ring of grid polyominoes. This class of non-simple and thin polyominoes was introduced by Mascia, Rinaldo, and Romeo, but not much is known about their polyomino ideals, $I_{\mathcal{P}}$, and their related coordinate ring, $K[\mathcal{P}]$. We give a formula for the Krull dimension of $K[\mathcal{P}]$ in terms of the combinatorics of the polyomino and we prove that $I_{\mathcal{P}}$ is of König type if and only if the polyomino has exactly one hole. In addition, we study a Conjecture of Rinaldo and Romeo which characterizes the thin polyominoes, and we confirm it for grid polyominoes. Namely, in the main result of this article, we prove that the $h$-polynomial of $K[\mathcal{P}]$ is equal to the rook polynomial of $\mathcal{P}$, and, as a consequence, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $K[\mathcal{P}]$ is equal to $r(\mathcal{P})$, the maximum number of rooks that can be placed in $\mathcal{P}$ in non-attacking positions. Our method to prove this result is based on the theory of simplicial complexes. We provide a suitable shelling order for $Δ_{\mathcal{P}}$, the simplicial complex attached to $\mathcal{P}$ in relation to a generalized step of a facet, and we show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the facets of $Δ_{\mathcal{P}}$ with $k$ generalized steps and the $k$-rook configurations in $\mathcal{P}$.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for $321$-avoiding Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties
We prove the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of 321-avoiding Kazhdan--Lusztig varieties can be computed combinatorially in terms of $K$-theoretic skew excited Young diagrams. We present an algorithm which gives a lower bound for this regularity and describe a setting in which this algorithm provides precise regularity computations. This algorithm specializes to compute the regularity of all two-sided mixed ladder determinantal varieties.
Combinatorics of Castelnuovo-Mumford Regularity of Binomial Edge Ideals
Since the introduction of binomial edge ideals $J_{G}$ by Herzog et al. and independently Ohtani, there has been significant interest in relating algebraic invariants of the binomial edge ideal with combinatorial invariants of the underlying graph $G$. Here, we take up a question considered by Herzog and Rinaldo regarding Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of block graphs. To this end, we introduce a new invariant $ν(G)$ associated to any simple graph $G$, defined as the maximal total length of a certain collection of induced paths within $G$ subject to conditions on the induced subgraph. We prove that for any graph $G$, $ν(G) \leq \text{reg}(J_{G})-1$, and that the length of a longest induced path of $G$ is less than or equal to $ν(G)$; this refines an inequality of Matsuda and Murai. We then investigate the question: when is $ν(G) = \text{reg}(J_{G})-1$? We prove that equality holds when $G$ is closed; this gives a new characterization of a result of Ene and Zarojanu, and when $G$ is bipartite and $J_{G}$ is Cohen-Macaulay; this gives a new characterization of a result of Jayanathan and Kumar. For a block graph $G$, we prove that $ν(G)$ admits a combinatorial characterization independent of any auxiliary choices, and we prove that $ν(G) = \text{reg}(J_{G})-1$. This gives $\text{reg}(J_{G})$ a combinatorial interpretation for block graphs, and thus answers the question of Herzog and Rinaldo.
On the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of symbolic powers of cover ideals
Assume that $G$ is a graph with cover ideal $J(G)$. For every integer $k\geq 1$, we denote the $k$-th symbolic power of $J(G)$ by $J(G)^{(k)}$. We provide a sharp upper bound for the regularity of $J(G)^{(k)}$ in terms of the star packing number of $G$. Also, for any integer $k\geq 2$, we study the difference between ${\rm reg}(J(G)^{(k)})$ and ${\rm reg}(J(G)^{(k-2)})$. As a consequence, we compute the regularity of $J(G)^{(k)}$ when $G$ is a doubly Cohen-Macaulay graph. Furthermore, we determine ${\rm reg}(J(G)^{(k)})$ if $G$ is either a Cameron-Walker graph or a claw-free graph which has no cycle of length other that $3$ and $5$.
Matrix Schubert varieties, binomial ideals, and reduced Gröbner bases
We prove a sharp lower bound on the number of terms in an element of the reduced Gröbner basis of a Schubert determinantal ideal $I_w$ under the term order of [Knutson-Miller '05]. We give three applications. First, we give a pattern-avoidance characterization of the matrix Schubert varieties whose defining ideals are binomial. This complements a result of [Escobar-Mészáros '16] on matrix Schubert varieties that are toric with respect to their natural torus action. Second, we give a combinatorial proof that the recent formulas of [Rajchgot-Robichaux-Weigandt '23] and [Almousa-Dochtermann-Smith '22] computing the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of vexillary $I_w$ and toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs respectively agree for binomial $I_w$. Third, we demonstrate that the Gröbner basis for $I_w$ given by minimal generators [Gao-Yong '22] is reduced if and only if the defining permutation $w$ is vexillary.

Abhyankar defined an ideal to be Hilbertian if its Hilbert polynomial coincides with its Hilbert function for all nonnegative integers. In 1984, he proved that the ideal of (r+1)-order minors of a generic p x q matrix is Hilbertian. We give a different proof and a generalization to the Schubert determinantal ideals introduced by Fulton in 1992. Our proof reduces to a simple upper bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of these ideals. We further indicate the pervasiveness of the Hilbertian property in Schubert geometry.

In this paper, we study the algebra of Veronese type. We show that the presentation ideal of this algebra has an initial ideal whose Alexander dual has linear quotients. As an application, we explicitly obtain the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Veronese type algebra. Furthermore, we give an effective upper bound on the multiplicity of this algebra.

We introduce a family of graphs, which we call down-left graphs, and study their combinatorial and algebraic properties. We show that members of this family are well-covered, $C_5$-free, and vertex decomposable. By applying a result of Hà-Woodroofe and Moradi--Khosh-Ahang, the (Castelnuovo-Mumford) regularity of the associated edge ideals is the induced matching number of the graph. As an application, we give a combinatorial interpretation for the regularity of the toric ideals of chordal bipartite graphs that are $(K_{3,3} \setminus e)$-free.
Top-degree components of Grothendieck and Lascoux polynomials
The Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomial $\widehat{\mathfrak{G}}_w$ with $w \in S_n$ is the highest homogeneous component of the Grothendieck polynomial $\mathfrak{G}_w$. Pechenik, Speyer and Weigandt define a statistic $\mathsf{rajcode}(\cdot)$ on $S_n$ that gives the leading monomial of $\widehat{\mathfrak{G}}_w$. We introduce a statistic $\mathsf{rajcode}(\cdot)$ on any diagram $D$ through a combinatorial construction ``snow diagram'' that augments and decorates $D$. When $D$ is the Rothe diagram of a permutation $w$, $\mathsf{rajcode}(D)$ agrees with the aforementioned $\mathsf{rajcode}(w)$. When $D$ is the key diagram of a weak composition $α$, $\mathsf{rajcode}(D)$ yields the leading monomial of $\widehat{\mathfrak{L}}_α$, the highest homogeneous component of the Lascoux polynomials $\mathfrak{L}_α$. We use $\widehat{\mathfrak{L}}_α$ to construct a basis of $\widehat{V}_n$, the span of $\widehat{\mathfrak{G}}_w$ with $w \in S_n$. Then we show $\widehat{V}_n$ gives a natural algebraic interpretation of a classical $q$-analogue of Bell numbers.

We study the properties of the rook complex $\mathcal{R}$ of a polyomino $\mathcal{P}$ seen as independence complex of a graph $G$, and the associated Stanley--Reisner ideal $I_\mathcal{R}$. In particular, we characterize the polyominoes $\mathcal{P}$ having a pure rook complex, and the ones whose Stanley--Reisner ideal has linear resolution. Furthermore, we prove that for a class of polyominoes the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $I_\mathcal{R}$ coincides with the induced matching number of $G$.
