For a Weyl group $W$ of rank $r$, the $W$-Catalan number is the number of antichains of the poset of positive roots, and the $W$-Narayana numbers refine the $W$-Catalan number by keeping track of the cardinalities of these antichains. The $W$-Narayana numbers are symmetric, i.e., the number of antichains of cardinality $k$ is the same as the number of cardinality $r-k$. However, this symmetry is far from obvious. Panyushev posed the problem of defining an involution on root poset antichains that exhibits the symmetry of the $W$-Narayana numbers.
Rowmotion and rowvacuation are two related operators, defined as compositions of "toggles," that give a dihedral action on the set of antichains of any ranked poset. Rowmotion acting on root posets has been the subject of a significant amount of research in the recent past. We prove that for the root posets of classical types, rowvacuation is Panyushev's desired involution.

In this short note, we describe a problem in algebraic geometry where the solution involves Catalan numbers. More specifically, we consider the derived category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic surface, and the action of its autoequivalence group on its Bridgeland stability manifold. In solving an equation involving this group action, the generating function of Catalan numbers arises, allowing us to use asymptotic estimates of Catalan numbers to arrive at a bound for the solution set.

We relate the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of open positroid varieties (in particular, their Betti numbers over $\mathbb{C}$ and point counts over $\mathbb{F}_q$) to Khovanov--Rozansky homology of associated links. We deduce that the mixed Hodge polynomials of top-dimensional open positroid varieties are given by rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers. Via the curious Lefschetz property of cluster varieties, this implies the $q,t$-symmetry and unimodality properties of rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers. We show that the $q,t$-symmetry phenomenon is a manifestation of Koszul duality for category $\mathcal{O}$, and discuss relations with open Richardson varieties and extension groups of Verma modules.
Catalan triangles and tied arc diagrams
The Catalan triangle, as well as a Fuss-Catalan triangle, enter a problem of counting particular tied arc diagrams. This setting allows us to prove some combinatorial properties of these triangles.
A Bijection Between Weighted Dyck Paths and 1234-avoiding Up-Down Permutations
Three-dimensional Catalan numbers are a variant of the classical (bidimensional) Catalan numbers, that count, among other interesting objects, the standard Young tableaux of shape (n,n,n). In this paper, we present a structural bijection between two three-dimensional Catalan objects: 1234-avoiding up-down permutations, and a class of weighted Dyck paths.

The cyclic sieving phenomenon of Reiner, Stanton, and White characterizes the stabilizers of cyclic group actions on finite sets using q-analogue polynomials. Eu and Fu demonstrated a cyclic sieving phenomenon on generalized cluster complexes of every type using the q-Catalan numbers. In this paper, we exhibit the dihedral sieving phenomenon, introduced for odd n by Rao and Suk, on clusters of every type. In the type A case, we show that the Raney numbers count both reflection-symmetric k-angulations of an n-gon and a particular evaluation of the (q,t)-Fuss--Catalan numbers. We also introduce a sieving phenomenon for the symmetric group, and discuss possibilities for dihedral sieving for even n.
Notes on the Hankel transform of linear combinations of consecutive pairs of Catalan numbers
We provide a context around a conjectured closed form for the Hankel transform of linear combinations of consecutive pairs of Catalan numbers. This generalizes the formula for the Hankel transforms of the shifted Catalan numbers and the known results for linear combinations of pairs of Catalan numbers. Many interesting number triangles emerge, some of which we analyze using the language of Riordan arrays.
Generalized Catalan numbers
A finitization of the Catalan numbers $ C_n $ can be defined as Euler characteristics of an algebraic structure. We conjecture the existence of a $ q $-deformed version of such structure, and provide evidence for the first two non-trivial cases. This $ q $-deformed version will likely categorify series arise from identities of the Roger-Ramanujan type.

Associative spectra of graph algebras are examined with the help of homomorphisms of DFS trees. Undirected graphs are classified according to the associative spectra of their graph algebras; there are only three distinct possibilities: constant 1, powers of 2, and Catalan numbers. Associative and antiassociative digraphs are described, and associative spectra are determined for certain families of digraphs, such as paths, cycles, and graphs on two vertices.
Two Quick Proofs of a Catalan Lemma Needed by Lisa Sauermann and Yuval Wigderson
We present two proofs each, all shorter than the original proofs, of two elegant combinatorial identities that came up in the beautiful article arXiv:2010.00077 .
The sets of flattened partitions with forbidden patterns
The study of pattern avoidance in permutations, and specifically in flattened partitions is an active area of current research. In this paper, we count the number of distinct flattened partitions over [n] avoiding a single pattern, as well as a pair of two patterns. Several counting sequences, namely Catalan numbers, powers of two, Fibonacci numbers and Motzkin numbers arise. We also consider other combinatorial statistics, namely runs and inversions, and establish some bijections in situations where the statistics coincide.
Dinv, Area, and Bounce for $\vec{k}$-Dyck paths
The well-known $q,t$-Catalan sequence has two combinatorial interpretations as weighted sums of ordinary Dyck paths: one is Haglund's area-bounce formula, and the other is Haiman's dinv-area formula. The zeta map was constructed to connect these two formulas: it is a bijection from ordinary Dyck paths to themselves, and it takes dinv to area, and area to bounce. Such a result was extended for $k$-Dyck paths by Loehr. The zeta map was extended by Armstrong-Loehr-Warrington for a very general class of paths.
In this paper, We extend the dinv-area-bounce result for $\vec{k}$-Dyck paths by: i) giving a geometric construction for the bounce statistic of a $\vec{k}$-Dyck path, which includes the $k$-Dyck paths and ordinary Dyck paths as special cases; ii) giving a geometric interpretation of the dinv statistic of a $\vec{k}$-Dyck path. Our bounce construction is inspired by Loehr's construction and Xin-Zhang's linear algorithm for inverting the sweep map on $\vec{k}$-Dyck paths. Our dinv interpretation is inspired by Garsia-Xin's visual proof of dinv-to-area result on rational Dyck paths.

Trees are useful entities allowing to model data structures and hierarchical relationships in networked decision systems ubiquitously. An ordered tree is a rooted tree where the order of the subtrees (children) of a node is significant. In combinatorial optimization, generating ordered trees is relevant to evaluate candidate combinatorial objects. In this paper, we present an algebraic scheme to generate ordered trees with $n$ vertices with utmost efficiency; whereby our approach uses $\mathcal{O}(n)$ space and $\mathcal{O}(1)$ time in average per tree. Our computational studies have shown the feasibility and efficiency to generate ordered trees in constant time in average, in about one tenth of a millisecond per ordered tree. Due to the 1-1 bijective nature to other combinatorial classes, our approach is favorable to study the generation of binary trees with $n$ external nodes, trees with $n$ nodes, legal sequences of $n$ pairs of parentheses, triangulated $n$-gons, gambler's sequences and lattice paths. We believe our scheme may find its use in devising algorithms for planning and combinatorial optimization involving Catalan numbers.
Trees and cycles
Let $T$ be a tree on $n$ vertices. We can regard the edges of $T$ as transpositions of the vertex set; their product (in any order) is a cyclic permutation. All possible cyclic permutations arise (each exactly once) if and only if the tree is a star. In this paper we find the number of realised cycles, and obtain some results on the number of realisations of each cycle, for other trees. We also solve the inverse problem of the number of trees which give rise to a given cycle. On the way, we meet some familiar number sequences including the Euler and Fuss--Catalan numbers.

We prove several new instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) on Catalan objects of type A and type B. Moreover, we refine many of the known instances of the CSP on Catalan objects. For example, we consider triangulations refined by the number of "ears", non-crossing matchings with a fixed number of short edges, and non-crossing configurations with a fixed number of loops and edges.
Planar Kinematics: Cyclic Fixed Points, Mirror Superpotential, k-Dimensional Catalan Numbers, and Root Polytopes

In this paper we prove that points in the space $X(k,n)$ of configurations of $n$ points in $\mathbb{CP}^{k-1}$ which are fixed under a certain cyclic action are the solutions to the generalized scattering equations on planar kinematics (PK). In the first part, we give a constructive upper bound: we show that these solutions inject into certain aperiodic k-element subsets of $\{1,\ldots, n\}$, and consequently that their number is bounded above by the number of Lyndon words with k one's and n-k zeros. The proof uses a somewhat surprising connection between the superpotential of the mirror of $G(n-k,n)$ and the generalized CHY potential on $X(k,n)$. We also check the recent conjecture that generalized biadjoint amplitudes evaluate to $k$-dimensional Catalan numbers on PK for several examples including $k=3$ and $n\leq 40$ and $(k,n)=(6,13)$. We then reformulate the CEGM generalized biadjoint scalar amplitude directly as a Laplace transform-type integral over ${\rm Trop}^+ G(k,n)$ and we use it to evaluate the amplitude on PK with the purpose of exhibiting how GFD's glue together.
We initiate the study of two minimal lattice polytopal neighborhoods of the planar kinematics point. One of these, the rank-graded root polytope $\mathcal{R}_{k,n}$, in the case $k=2$, is a projection of the standard type A root polytope. The other, denoted $Π_{k,n}$, in the case $k=2$, is a degeneration of the associahedron. We check up to and including $\mathcal{R}_{3,9}$ and $\mathcal{R}_{4,9}$ that the relative volume of $\mathcal{R}_{k,n}$ is the multi-dimensional Catalan number $C^{(k)}_{n-k}$, hinting towards the possibility of deeper geometric and combinatorial interpretations of $m^{(k)}(\mathbb{I}_n,\mathbb{I}_n)$ near the PK point.

During the study of dual sequences, Sun introduced the polynomials \[ D_n(x,y)=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n\choose k}{x\choose k}y^k\text{ and } S_n(x,y)=\sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}\binom{x}{k}\binom{-1-x}{k} y^k. \] Many related congruences have been established and conjectured by Sun. Here we generalize some of them by determining \[ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}D_k(x_1,y_1)D_k(x_2,y_2)\pmod p \text{ and } \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}S_k(x_1,y_1)S_k(x_2,y_2)\pmod p \] for any odd prime $p$ and $p$-adic integers $x_i,\ y_i$ with $i\in\{1,2\}$. Considering the immediate connection between binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers, we also characterize \[ \sum_{n=0}^{p-1}\left(\sum_{k=0}^n {n \choose k} \frac{C_k}{a^k}\right)^2 \pmod {p}, \] where $C_k$ denotes the $k$th Catalan number, $a\in\mathbb{Z}\setminus \{0\}$ with $\gcd(a,p)=1$. These confirm and generalise some of Sun's conjectures.
$K$-theoretic Catalan functions

We prove that the $K$-$k$-Schur functions are part of a family of inhomogenous symmetric functions whose top homogeneous components are Catalan functions, the Euler characteristics of certain vector bundles on the flag variety. Lam-Schilling-Shimozono identified the $K$-$k$-Schur functions as Schubert representatives for $K$-homology of the affine Grassmannian for SL$_{k+1}$. Our perspective reveals that the $K$-$k$-Schur functions satisfy a shift invariance property, and we deduce positivity of their branching coefficients from a positivity result of Baldwin and Kumar. We further show that a slight adjustment of our formulation for $K$-$k$-Schur functions produces a second shift-invariant basis which conjecturally has both positive branching and a rectangle factorization property. Building on work of Ikeda-Iwao-Maeno, we conjecture that this second basis gives the images of the Lenart-Maeno quantum Grothendieck polynomials under a $K$-theoretic analog of the Peterson isomorphism.
4D Dyck triangle and its projections
The classic Dyck triangle, the Catalan triangle, and the Catalan convolution matrix are plane projections of the multidimensional Dyck triangle. In the Dyck path, each node is uniquely determined by two of four interrelated parameters: (i) the position of the current parenthesis, (ii) the current unbalance of the parentheses, (iii) the number of viewed left parentheses, and (iv) the same for right parentheses. The last two parameters can be redefined, respectively, as the index of the current Catalan number and the index of the summand in the decomposition of the Catalan number into the sum of squares (Dyck squares). For the 4D Dyck triangle, we consider six 2D projections (some of them are not yet in demand) and four 3D projections.

Motivated by higher vanishing multiplicity generalizations of Alon's Combinatorial Nullstellensatz and its applications, we study the following problem: for fixed $k\geq 1$ and $n$ large with respect to $k$, what is the minimum possible degree of a polynomial $P\in \mathbb{R}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ with $P(0,\dots,0)\neq 0$ such that $P$ has zeroes of multiplicity at least $k$ at all points in $\{0,1\}^n\setminus \{(0,\dots,0)\}$? For $k=1$, a classical theorem of Alon and Füredi states that the minimum possible degree of such a polynomial equals $n$. In this paper, we solve the problem for all $k\geq 2$, proving that the answer is $n+2k-3$. As an application, we improve a result of Clifton and Huang on configurations of hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that each point in $\{0,1\}^n\setminus \{(0,\dots,0)\}$ is covered by at least $k$ hyperplanes, but the point $(0,\dots,0)$ is uncovered. Surprisingly, the proof of our result involves Catalan numbers and arguments from enumerative combinatorics.
