A bijective study of Basketball walks
The Catalan numbers count many classes of combinatorial objects. The most emblematic such objects are probably the Dyck walks and the binary trees, and, whenever another class of combinatorial objects is counted by the Catalan numbers, it is natural to search for an explicit bijection between the latter objects and one of the former objects. In most cases, such a bijection happens to be relatively simple but it might sometimes be more intricate. In this work, we focus on so-called \emph{basketball walks}, which are integer-valued walks with step-set $\{-2,-1,+1,+2\}$. The presence of $-2$ as an allowed step makes it impossible to use the classical Łukasiewicz encoding of trees by integer-valued walks, and thus a different strategy is needed. We give an explicit bijection that maps, for each $n\ge 2$, $n$-step basketball walks from $0$ to $0$ that visit $1$ and are positive except at their extremities to $n$-leaf binary trees. Moreover, we can partition the steps of a walk into $\pm 1$-steps, odd $+2$-steps or even $-2$-steps, and odd $-2$-steps or even $+2$-steps, and these three types of steps are mapped through our bijection to double leaves, left leaves, and right leaves of the corresponding tree. We also prove that basketball walks from $0$ to $1$ that are positive except at the origin are in bijection with increasing unary-binary trees with associated permutation avoiding $213$. We furthermore give the refined generating function of these objects with an extra variable accounting for the unary nodes.
Revitalized automatic proofs: demonstrations
We consider three problems from the recent issues of the American Mathematical Monthly involving different versions of Catalan triangle. Our main results offer generalizations of these identities and demonstrate automated proofs with additional twists, and on occasion we furnish a combinatorial proof.

Bijections between generalized Catalan families of types A and C
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the relation holding for the m-generalized Catalan numbers of type A and C, the connection between dominant regions of the m-Shi arrangement of type A and C is investigated. In the same line of thought, a bijection between mn+1 copies of each m-Dyck path of height n and the set of NE lattice paths inside an n times mn rectangle is provided.

The gap of Fredkin quantum spin chain is polynomially small
Published in Annals of Mathematical Sciences and Applications, Vol. 3 No. 2, pp. 531-562 (2018) • View PublicationBIB
We prove a new result on the spectral gap and mixing time of a Markov chain with Glauber dynamics on the space of Dyck paths (i.e., Catalan paths) and their generalization, which we call colored Dyck paths. The proof uses the comparison theorem of Diaconis and Saloff-Coste and our previous results. Let $2n$ be the number of spins. We prove that the gap of the Fredkin quantum spin chain Hamiltonian [6, 20], is $Θ(n^{-c})$ with $c\ge2$. Our results on the spectral gap of the Markov chain are used to prove a lower bound of $O(n^{-15/2})$ on the energy of first excited state above the ground state of the Fredkin quantum spin chain. We prove an upper bound of $O(n^{-2})$ using the universality of Brownian motion and convergence of Dyck random walks to Brownian excursions. Lastly, the 'unbalanced' ground state energies are proved to be polynomially small in $n$ by mapping the Hamiltonian to an effective hopping Hamiltonian with next nearest neighbor interactions and analytically solving its ground state.

A proof of the $4$-variable Catalan polynomial of the Delta conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
In The Delta Conjecture (arxiv:1509.07058), Haglund, Remmel and Wilson introduced a four variable $q,t,z,w$ Catalan polynomial, so named because the specialization of this polynomial at the values $(q,t,z,w) = (1,1,0,0)$ is equal to the Catalan number $\frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$. We prove the compositional version of this conjecture (which implies the non-compositional version) that states that the coefficient of $s_{r,1^{n-r}}$ in the expression $Δ_{h_\ell} \nabla C_α$ is equal to a weighted sum over decorated Dyck paths.

Enumerative Properties of Posets Corresponding to a Certain Class of No Strategy Games
In this paper, we consider a game beginning with a multiset of elements from a group. On a move, two elements are replaced by their sum. This is a no strategy game, and can be modeled as a graded poset with the rank of a node equal to the cardinality of its multiset. We study the enumerative properties of certain variations of this game, such as the number of ways to play them and their numbers of end states. This leads to several new sequences, as well as new interpretations of classic sequences such as those found in the Catalan and Motzkin triangles.

The MacMahon $q$-Catalan is convex
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $n\geq2$ be an integer. In this paper, we study the convexity of the so-called MacMahon's $q$-Catalan polynomials $C_n(q)=\frac1{[n+1]_q}\left[ 2n \atop n \right]_q$ as functions of $q$. Along the way, several intermediate results on inequalities are presented including a commentary on the convexity of the generation function for the integer partitions.

Identities involving weighted Catalan, Schroder and Motzkin paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we investigate the weighted Catalan, Motzkin and Schröder numbers together with the corresponding weighted paths. The relation between these numbers is illustrated by three equations, which also lead to some known and new interesting identities. To show these three equations, we provide combinatorial proofs. One byproduct is to find a bijection between two sets of Catalan paths: one consisting of those with $k$ valleys, and the other consisting of $k$ $\mathbf{N}$ steps in even positions.

On enumeration of tree-rooted planar cubic maps
We consider planar cubic maps, i.e. connected cubic graphs imbedded into plane, with marked spanning tree and marked directed edge (not in this tree). The number of such objects with $2n$ vertices is $C_{2n}\cdot C_{n+1}$, where $C_k$ is $k$-th Catalan number.
Matroid basis graph: Counting Hamiltonian cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present exponential and super factorial lower bounds on the number of Hamiltonian cycles passing through any edge of the basis graphs of a graphic, generalized Catalan and uniform matroids. All lower bounds were obtained by a common general strategy based on counting appropriated cycles of length four in the corresponding matroid basis graph.

Set-Valued Tableaux & Generalized Catalan Numbers
Standard set-valued Young tableaux are a generalization of standard Young tableaux in which cells may contain more than one integer, with the added conditions that every integer at position $(i,j)$ must be smaller than every integer at positions $(i,j+1)$ and $(i+1,j)$. This paper explores the combinatorics of standard set-valued Young tableaux with two-rows, and how those tableaux may be used to provide new combinatorial interpretations of generalized Catalan numbers. New combinatorial interpretations are provided for the two-parameter Fuss-Catalan numbers (Raney numbers), the rational Catalan numbers, and the solution to the so-called "generalized tennis ball problem". Methodologies are then introduced for the enumeration of standard set-valued Young tableaux, prompting explicit formulas for the general two-row case. The paper closes by drawing a bijection between arbitrary classes of two-row standard set-valued Young tableaux and collections of two-dimensional lattice paths that lie weakly below a unique maximal path.

Fine structure of moments of the KMK transform of the Poissonized Plancharel measure
We consider asymptotics behavior of Poissonized Plancharel measures as the poissonization parameter $N$ goes to infinity. Recently Moll proved a convergent series expansion for statistics of a measure $μ_λ$ which is the Kerov-Markov-Krein transform of the signed measure on corners a Jack-random partition $λ$. The measure $μ_λ$ is of interest because it behaves in some ways like the empirical measure on eigenvalues of a GUE-random matrix. We prove for the Poissonized Plancharel case that the large $N$ series for moments of $μ_λ$ have a recursive structure as rational expressions in the generating function for Catalan numbers. We discuss the analogy between our result and the fine structure of moments of the GUE.

Multiparameter Fuss--Catalan numbers with application to algebraic equations
We present an exposition on the Fuss--Catalan numbers, which are a generalization of the well known Catalan numbers. The literature on the subject is scattered (especially for the case of multiple independent parameters, as will be explained in the text), with overlapping definitions by different authors and duplication of proofs. This paper collects the main theorems and identities, with a consistent notation. Contact is made with the works of numerous authors, including the early works of Lambert and Euler. We demonstrate the application of the formalism to solve algebraic equations by infinite series. Our main result in this context is a new necessary and sufficient formula for the domain of absolute convergence of the series solutions of algebraic equations, which corrects and extends previous work in the field. Some historical material is placed in an Appendix.

Using the "Freshman's Dream" to Prove Combinatorial Congruences
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent beautiful but technical article, William Y.C. Chen, Qing-Hu Hou, and Doron Zeilberger developed an algorithm for finding and proving congruence identities (modulo primes) of indefinite sums of many combinatorial sequences, namely those (like the Catalan and Motzkin sequences) that are expressible in terms of constant terms of powers of Laurent polynomials. We first give a leisurely exposition of their elementary but brilliant approach, and then extend it in two directions. The Laurent polynomials may be of several variables, and instead of single sums we have multiple sums. In fact we even combine these two generalizations! We conclude with some super-challenges. In this version we report that Roberto Tauraso pointed out that all our conjectured super-congruences, at the end of our article are already known, except one, for which he supplied a beautiful proof that can be found here: arXiv:1606.05543.

Weyl group $q$-Kreweras numbers and cyclic sieving
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper concerns a definition for $q$-Kreweras numbers for finite Weyl groups $W$, refining the $q$-Catalan numbers for $W$, and arising from work of the second author. We give explicit formulas in all types for the $q$-Kreweras numbers. In the classical types $A, B, C$, we also record formulas for the $q$-Narayana numbers and in the process show that the formulas depend only on the Weyl group (that is, they coincide in types $B$ and $C$). In addition we verify that in the classical types $A,B,C,D$ that the $q$-Kreweras numbers obey the expected cyclic sieving phenomena when evaluated at appropriate roots of unity.
Cost functionals for large (uniform and simply generated) random trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Additive tree functionals allow to represent the cost of many divide-and-conquer algorithms. We give an invariance principle for such tree functionals for the Catalan model (random tree uniformly distributed among the full binary ordered trees with given number of internal nodes) and for simply generated trees (including random tree uniformly distributed among the ordered trees with given number of nodes). In the Catalan model, this relies on the natural embedding of binary trees into the Brownian excursion and then on elementary second moment computations. We recover results first given by Fill and Kapur (2004) and then by Fill and Janson (2009). In the simply generated case, this relies on the convergence of conditioned Galton-Watson towards stable Lévy trees. We recover results first given by Janson (2003 and 2016) in the quadratic case and give a generalization to the stable case.

Deformations of the braid arrangement and Trees
Published in Advances in Mathematics, Elsevier, 2018, 335, pp.466-518 • View PublicationBIB
We establish counting formulas and bijections for deformations of the braid arrangement. Precisely, we consider real hyperplane arrangements such that all the hyperplanes are of the form $x\_i-x\_j=s$ for some integer $s$. Classical examples include the braid, Catalan, Shi, semiorder and Linial arrangements, as well as graphical arrangements. We express the number of regions of any such arrangement as a signed count of decorated plane trees. The characteristic and coboundary polynomials of these arrangements also have simple expressions in terms of these trees. We then focus on certain "well-behaved" deformations of the braid arrangement that we call transitive. This includes the Catalan, Shi, semiorder and Linial arrangements, as well as many other arrangements appearing in the literature. For any transitive deformation of the braid arrangement we establish a simple bijection between regions of the arrangement and a set of plane trees defined by local conditions. This answers a question of Gessel.

Arithmetical structures on graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Arithmetical structures on a graph were introduced by Lorenzini as some intersection matrices that arise in the study of degenerating curves in algebraic geometry. In this article we study these arithmetical structures, in particular we are interested in the arithmetical structures on complete graphs, paths, and cycles. We begin by looking at the arithmetical structures on a multidigraph from the general perspective of $M$-matrices. As an application, we recover the result of Lorenzini about the finiteness of the number of arithmetical structures on a graph. We give a description on the arithmetical structures on the graph obtained by merging and splitting a vertex of a graph in terms of its arithmetical structures. On the other hand, we give a description of the arithmetical structures on the clique--star transform of a graph, which generalizes the subdivision of a graph. As an application of this result we obtain an explicit description of all the arithmetical structures on the paths and cycles and we show that the number of the arithmetical structures on a path is a Catalan number.

New identities for binary Krawtchouk polynomials, binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers
We obtain new combinatorial identities for integral values of binary Krawtchouk polynomials $K^{2m}_p(x)$, $0\le p\le 2m$, by computing the characters of the $p$-exterior representations on certain elements of order 2 of $\mathrm{SO}(2m)$. From this identities, we deduce several new relations for binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers.

Sums of squares of Krawtchouk polynomials, Catalan numbers, and some algebras over the Boolean lattice
Writing the values of Krawtchouk polynomials as matrices, we consider weighted partial sums along columns. For the general case, we find an identity that, in the symmetric case yields a formula for such partial sums. Complete sums of squares along columns involve "Super Catalan" numbers. We look as well for particular values (matrix entries) involving the Catalan numbers. Properties considered and developed in this work are applied to calculations of various dimensions that describe the structure of some *-algebras over the Boolean lattice based on inclusion/superset relations expressed algebraically using zeons [zero-square elements].
