We formulate many open questions regarding the Schur positivity of the effect of interesting operators on symmetric functions, and give supporting evidence for why one should expect such behavior.

A Dyck path with $2k$ steps and $e$ flaws is a path in the integer lattice that starts at the origin and consists of $k$ many $\nearrow$-steps and $k$ many $\searrow$-steps that change the current coordinate by $(1,1)$ or $(1,-1)$, respectively, and that has exactly $e$ many $\searrow$-steps below the line $y=0$. Denoting by $D_{2k}^e$ the set of Dyck paths with $2k$ steps and $e$ flaws, the Chung-Feller theorem asserts that the sets $D_{2k}^0,D_{2k}^1,\ldots,D_{2k}^k$ all have the same cardinality $\frac{1}{k+1}\binom{2k}{k}=C_k$, the $k$-th Catalan number. The standard combinatorial proof of this classical result establishes a bijection $f'$ between $D_{2k}^e$ and $D_{2k}^{e+1}$ that swaps certain parts of the given Dyck path $x$, with the effect that $x$ and $f'(x)$ may differ in many positions. In this paper we strengthen the Chung-Feller theorem by presenting a simple bijection $f$ between $D_{2k}^e$ and $D_{2k}^{e+1}$ which has the additional feature that $x$ and $f(x)$ differ in only two positions (the least possible number). We also present an algorithm that allows to compute a sequence of applications of $f$ in constant time per generated Dyck path. As an application, we use our minimum-change bijection $f$ to construct cycle-factors in the odd graph $O_{2k+1}$ and the middle levels graph $M_{2k+1}$ --- two intensively studied families of vertex-transitive graphs --- that consist of $C_k$ many cycles of the same length.

Using techniques from the theories of convex polytopes, lattice paths, and indirect influences on directed manifolds, we construct continuous analogues for the binomial coefficients and the Catalan numbers. Our approach for constructing these analogues can be applied to a wide variety of combinatorial sequences. As an application we develop a continuous analogue for the binomial distribution.
Topologically Distinct Sets of Non-intersecting Circles in the Plane
Nested parentheses are forms in an algebra which define orders of evaluations. A class of well-formed sets of associated opening and closing parentheses is well studied in conjunction with Dyck paths and Catalan numbers. Nested parentheses also represent cuts through circles on a line. These become topologies of non-intersecting circles in the plane if the underlying algebra is commutative.
This paper generalizes the concept and answers quantitatively - as recurrences and generating functions of matching rooted forests - the questions: how many different topologies of nested circles exist in the plane if (i) pairs of circles may intersect, or (ii) even triples of circles may intersect. That analysis is driven by examining the symmetry properties of the inner regions of the fundamental type(s) of the intersecting pairs and triples.

The d-dimensional Catalan numbers form a well-known sequence of numbers which count balanced bracket expressions over an alphabet of size d. In this paper, we introduce and study what we call d-dimensional prime Catalan numbers, a sequence of numbers which count only a very specific subset of indecomposable balanced bracket expressions.
We further introduce the notion of a trapezoidal diagram of a crossing-free geometric graph, such as a triangulation or a crossing-free perfect matching. In essence, such a diagram is obtained by augmenting the geometric graph in question with its trapezoidal decomposition, and then forgetting about the precise coordinates of individual vertices while preserving the vertical visibility relations between vertices and segments. We note that trapezoidal diagrams of triangulations are closely related to abstract upward triangulations.
We study the numbers of such diagrams in the cases of (i) perfect matchings and (ii) triangulations. We give bijective proofs which establish relations with 3-dimensional (prime) Catalan numbers. This allows us to determine the corresponding exponential growth rates exactly as (i) 5.196^n and (ii) 23.459^n (bases are rounded to 3 decimal places).
Finally, we give lower bounds for the maximum number of embeddings of a trapezoidal diagram on any given point set.

The \emph{$q,t$-Catalan numbers} $C_n(q,t)$ are polynomials in $q$ and $t$ that reduce to the ordinary Catalan numbers when $q=t=1$. These polynomials have important connections to representation theory, algebraic geometry, and symmetric functions. Haglund and Haiman discovered combinatorial formulas for $C_n(q,t)$ as weighted sums of Dyck paths (or equivalently, integer partitions contained in a staircase shape). This paper undertakes a combinatorial investigation of the joint symmetry property $C_n(q,t)=C_n(t,q)$. We conjecture some structural decompositions of Dyck objects into "mutually opposite" subcollections that lead to a bijective explanation of joint symmetry in certain cases. A key new idea is the construction of infinite chains of partitions that are independent of $n$ but induce the joint symmetry for all $n$ simultaneously. Using these methods, we prove combinatorially that for $0\leq k\leq 9$ and all $n$, the terms in $C_n(q,t)$ of total degree $\binom{n}{2}-k$ have the required symmetry property.
Core partitions into distinct parts and an analog of Euler's theorem

A special case of an elegant result due to Anderson proves that the number of $(s,s+1)$-core partitions is finite and is given by the Catalan number $C_s$. Amdeberhan recently conjectured that the number of $(s,s+1)$-core partitions into distinct parts equals the Fibonacci number $F_{s+1}$. We prove this conjecture by enumerating, more generally, $(s,ds-1)$-core partitions into distinct parts. We do this by relating them to certain tuples of nested twin-free sets.
As a by-product of our results, we obtain a bijection between partitions into distinct parts and partitions into odd parts, which preserves the perimeter (that is, the largest part plus the number of parts minus $1$). This simple but curious analog of Euler's theorem appears to be missing from the literature on partitions.

The binomial coefficients and Catalan triangle numbers appear as weight multiplicities of the finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras and affine Kac--Moody algebras. We prove that any binomial coefficient can be written as weighted sums along rows of the Catalan triangle. The coefficients in the sums form a triangular array, which we call the alternating Jacobsthal triangle. We study various subsequences of the entries of the alternating Jacobsthal triangle and show that they arise in a variety of combinatorial constructions. The generating functions of these sequences enable us to define their k-analogue of q-deformation. We show that this deformation also gives rise to interesting combinatorial sequences. The starting point of this work is certain identities in the study of Khovanov--Lauda--Rouquier algebras and fully commutative elements of a Coxeter group.

In the study of Kostka numbers and Catalan numbers, Kirillov posed a unimodality conjecture for the rectangular Narayana polynomials. We prove that the rectangular Narayana polynomials have only real zeros, and thereby confirm Kirillov's unimodality conjecture with the help of Newton's inequality. By using an equidistribution property between descent numbers and ascent numbers on ballot paths due to Sulanke and a bijection between lattice words and standard Young tableaux, we show that the rectangular Narayana polynomial is equal to the descent generating function on standard Young tableaux of certain rectangular shape, up to a power of the indeterminate. Then we obtain the real-rootedness of the rectangular Narayana polynomial based on Brenti's result that the descent generating function of standard Young tableaux has only real zeros.

Let $A=[a_{n,k}]_{n,k\ge 0}$ be an infinite lower triangular matrix defined by the recurrence $$a_{0,0}=1,\quad a_{n+1,k}=r_{k}a_{n,k-1}+s_{k}a_{n,k}+t_{k+1}a_{n,k+1},$$ where $a_{n,k}=0$ unless $n\ge k\ge 0$ and $r_k,s_k,t_k$ are all nonnegative. Many well-known combinatorial triangles are such matrices, including the Pascal triangle, the Stirling triangle (of the second kind), the Bell triangle, the Catalan triangles of Aigner and Shapiro. We present some sufficient conditions such that the recursive matrix $A$ is totally positive. As applications we give the total positivity of the above mentioned combinatorial triangles in a unified approach.
Computationally Efficient Bounds for the Sum of Catalan Numbers
Easily computable lower and upper bounds are found for the sum of Catalan numbers. The lower bound is proven to be tighter than the upper bound, which previously was declared to be only an asymptotic. The average of these bounds is proven to be also an upper bound, and empirically it is shown that the average is superior to the previous upper bound by a factor greater than (9/2).

Based on computational experiments, Jim Propp and Vic Reiner suspected that there might exist a sequence of combinatorial objects $X_n$, each carrying a natural action of the cyclic group $C_{n-1}$ of order $n-1$ such that the triple $\left(X_n,C_{n-1},\frac{1}{[n+1]_q}{2n \brack n}_q\right)$ exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon. We prove their suspicion right.

We prove a conjecture of J.-C. Novelli, J.-Y. Thibon, and L. K. Williams (2010) about an equivalence of two triples of statistics on permutations. To prove this conjecture, we construct a bijection through different combinatorial objects, starting with a Catalan based object related to the PASEP. As a byproduct of this research, we also provide a new co-sylvester class-preserving bijection on permutations.

Multiple analogues of certain families of combinatorial numbers are recently constructed by the author in terms of well poised Macdonald functions, and some of their fundamental properties are developed. In this paper, we present combinatorial formulas for the well poised Macdonald functions, the multiple binomial coefficients, the multiple bracket function, and the multiple Catalan and Lah numbers.
The Raney Numbers and $(s,s+1)$-Core Partitions
The Raney numbers $R_{p,r}(k)$ are a two-parameter generalization of the Catalan numbers. In this paper, we obtain a recurrence relation for the Raney numbers which is a generalization of the recurrence relation for the Catalan numbers. Using this recurrence relation, we confirm a conjecture posed by Amdeberhan concerning the enumeration of $(s,s+1)$-core partitions $λ$ with parts that are multiples of $p$. We then give a new combinatorial interpretation for the Raney numbers $R_{p+1,r+1}(k)$ with $0\leq r<p$ in terms of $(kp+r,kp+r+1)$-core partitions $λ$ with parts that are multiples of $p$.
Constructive and analytic enumeration of circulant graphs with $p^3$ vertices; $p=3,5$
Two methods, structural (constructive) and multiplier (analytical), of exact enumeration of undirected and directed circulant graphs of orders 27 and 125 are elaborated and represented in detail here together with intermediate and final numerical data. The first method is based on the known useful classification of circulant graphs in terms of $S$-rings and results in exhaustive listing (with the use of COCO and GAP) of all corresponding $S$-rings of the indicated orders. The latter method is conducted in the framework of a general approach developed earlier for counting circulant graphs of prime-power orders. It is a Redfield--Pólya type of enumeration based on an isomorphism criterion for circulant graphs of such orders. In particular, five intermediate enumeration subproblems arise, which are refined further into eleven subproblems of this type (5 and 11 are, not accidentally, the 3d Catalan and 3d little Schröder numbers, resp.). All of them are resolved for the four cases under consideration (again with the use of GAP). We give a brief survey of some background theory of the results which form the basis of our computational approach.
Except for the case of undirected circulant graphs of orders 27, the numerical results obtained here are new. In particular the number (up to isomorphism) of directed circulant graphs of orders 27, regardless of valency, is shown to be equal to 3,728,891 while 457 of these are self-complementary. Some curious and rather unexpected identities are established between intermediate valency-specified enumerators (both for undirected and directed circulant graphs) and their validity is conjectured for arbitrary cubed odd prime $p^3$.
We believe that this research can serve as the crucial step towards explicit uniform enumeration formulae for circulant graphs of orders $p^3$ for arbitrary prime $p>2$.
Rational Shi tableaux and the skew length statistic

We define two refinements of the skew length statistic on simultaneous core partitions. The first one relies on hook lengths and is used to prove a refined version of the theorem stating that the skew length is invariant under conjugation of the core. The second one is equivalent to a generalisation of Shi tableaux to the rational level of Catalan combinatorics. These rational Shi tableaux encode dominant $p$-stable elements in the affine symmetric group. We prove that the rational Shi tableau is injective, that is, each dominant $p$-stable affine permutation is determined uniquely by its Shi tableau. Moreover, we provide a uniform generalisation of rational Shi tableaux to Weyl groups, and conjecture injectivity in the general case.
The Dehn-Sommerville Relations and the Catalan Matroid

The $f$-vector of a $d$-dimensional polytope $P$ stores the number of faces of each dimension. When $P$ is simplicial the Dehn--Sommerville relations condense the $f$-vector into the $g$-vector, which has length $\lceil{\frac{d+1}{2}}\rceil$. Thus, to determine the $f$-vector of $P$, we only need to know approximately half of its entries. This raises the question: Which $(\lceil{\frac{d+1}{2}}\rceil)$-subsets of the $f$-vector of a general simplicial polytope are sufficient to determine the whole $f$-vector? We prove that the answer is given by the bases of the Catalan matroid.
Enumerations of Permutations Simultaneously Avoiding a Vincular and a Covincular Pattern of Length 3
Vincular and covincular patterns are generalizations of classical patterns allowing restrictions on the indices and values of the occurrences in a permutation. In this paper we study the integer sequences arising as the enumerations of permutations simultaneously avoiding a vincular and a covincular pattern, both of length 3, with at most one restriction. We see familiar sequences, such as the Catalan and Motzkin numbers, but also some previously unknown sequences which have close links to other combinatorial objects such as lattice paths and integer partitions. Where possible we include a generating function for the enumeration. One of the cases considered settles a conjecture by Pudwell (2010) on the Wilf-equivalence of barred patterns. We also give an alternative proof of the classic result that permutations avoiding 123 are counted by the Catalan numbers.
A new interpretation of Catalan numbers

Towards the study of the Kashiwara B(infinity) crystal, sets H^t of functions were introduced given by equivalence classes of unordered partitions satisfying certain boundary conditions. Here it is shown that H^t is a Catalan set of order t, that is to say the cardinality of H^t is the t-th Catalan number C(t). This is a new description of a Catalan set and moreover admits some remarkable features. Thus to H^t there is an associated labelled graph G_t which is shown to have a canonical decomposition into (t-1)! subgraphs each with 2^{t-1} vertices. These subgraphs, called S-graphs, have some tight properties which are needed for the study of B(infinity). They are described as labelled hypercubes whose edges connecting vertices with equal labels are missing. It is shown that the number of distinct hypercubes so obtained is again a Catalan number, namely C(t-1). They define functions which depend on a coefficient set of non-negative integers. When the latter are non-zero and pairwise distinct, the vertices of the S-graphs describe distinct functions. Moreover this property is retained if certain edges are deleted and certain vertices identified. In particular when these coefficients are all equal and non-zero, it is shown that every hypercube degenerates to a simplex, resulting in exactly t distinct functions, which for example are exactly those needed in the description of B(infinity) in type A.
