Random cyclic dynamical systems
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 83 (2017), 1-23 • View PublicationBIB
For X a finite subset of the circle and for 0 < r <= 1 fixed, consider the function f_r : X -> X which maps each point to the clockwise furthest element of X within angular distance less than 2 pi r. We study the discrete dynamical system on X generated by f_r, and especially its expected behavior when X is a large random set. We show that, as |X| -> infinity, the expected fraction of periodic points of f_r tends to 0 if r is irrational and to 1/q if r = p/q is rational with p and q coprime. These results are obtained via more refined statistics of f_r which we compute explicitly in terms of (generalized) Catalan numbers. The motivation for studying f_r comes from Vietoris-Rips complexes, a geometric construction used in computational topology. Our results determine how much one can expect to simplify the Vietoris-Rips complex of a random sample of the circle by removing dominated vertices.

From Entanglement Witness to Generalized Catalan Numbers
Published in Scientific Reports 6, 30232 (2016) • View PublicationBIB
The problem of entanglement detection for arbitrary spin systems is analyzed. We demonstrate how a single measurement of the squared total spin can probabilistically discern separable from entangled many-particle states. For achieving this goal, we construct a tripartite analogy between the degeneracy of entanglement witness eigenstates, tensor products of $SO(3)$ representations and classical lattice walks with special constraints. Within this framework, degeneracies are naturally given by generalized Catalan numbers and determine the fraction of states that are decidedly entangled and also known to be somewhat protected against decoherence. In addition, we introduce the concept of a "sterile entanglement witness", which for large enough systems detects entanglement without affecting much the system's state. We discuss when our proposed entanglement witness can be regarded as a sterile one.
Slicings of parallelogram polyominoes: Catalan, Schröder, Baxter, and other sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a new succession rule (i.e. generating tree) associated with Schröder numbers, that interpolates between the known succession rules for Catalan and Baxter numbers. We define Schröder and Baxter generalizations of parallelogram polyominoes, called slicings, which grow according to these succession rules. In passing, we also exhibit Schröder subclasses of Baxter classes, namely a Schröder subset of triples of non-intersecting lattice paths, a new Schröder subset of Baxter permutations, and a new Schröder subset of mosaic floorplans. Finally, we define two families of subclasses of Baxter slicings: the $m$-skinny slicings and the $m$-row-restricted slicings, for $m \in \mathbb{N}$. Using functional equations and the kernel method, their generating functions are computed in some special cases, and we conjecture that they are algebraic for any $m$.
Symmetric matrices, Catalan paths, and correlations

Kenyon and Pemantle (2014) gave a formula for the entries of a square matrix in terms of connected principal and almost-principal minors. Each entry is an explicit Laurent polynomial whose terms are the weights of domino tilings of a half Aztec diamond. They conjectured an analogue of this parametrization for symmetric matrices, where the Laurent monomials are indexed by Catalan paths. In this paper we prove the Kenyon-Pemantle conjecture, and apply this to a statistics problem pioneered by Joe (2006). Correlation matrices are represented by an explicit bijection from the cube to the elliptope.

Cyclic sieving and rational Catalan theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $a < b$ be coprime positive integers. Armstrong, Rhoades, and Williams defined a set $\mathsf{NC}(a,b)$ of `rational noncrossing partitions', which form a subset of the ordinary noncrossing partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, b-1\}$. Confirming a conjecture of Armstrong et. al., we prove that $\mathsf{NC}(a,b)$ is closed under rotation and prove an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon for this rotational action. We also define a rational generalization of the $\mathfrak{S}_a$-noncrossing parking functions of Armstrong, Reiner, and Rhoades.

A preparation theorem for the kashiwara $b(\infty)$ crystal
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Kashiwara $B(\infty)$ crystal pertains to a Verma module for a Kac- Moody Lie algebra. Ostensibly it provides only a parametrisation of the global/canonical basis for the latter. Yet it is much more having a rich combinatorial structure from which one may read of a parametrisation of the corresponding basis for any integrable highest weight module, describe the decomposition of the tensor products of highest weight modules, the Demazure submodules of integrable highest weight modules and Demazure flags for translates of Demazure modules. $B(\infty)$ has in general infinitely many presentations as subsets of countably many copies of the natural numbers each given by successive reduced decompositions of Weyl group elements. In each presentation there is an action of Kashiwara operators determined by Kashiwara functions. These functions are linear in the entries. Thus a natural question is to show that in each presentation the subset $B(\infty)$ is polyhedral. Here a new approach to this question is initiated based on constructing dual Kashiwara functions and in this it is enough to show that the latter are also linear in the entries. The present work resolves one of the two very difficult obstacles in a step-wise construction, namely that the resulting functions must satisfy a sum, or simply S, condition. It depends very subtly on inequalities between the coefficients occurring in functions obtained from the previous step. The only remaining obstacle, that sufficiently many functions are obtained, can at least be verified in many families of cases, though this is to be postponed to a subsequent paper. This theory has some intriguing numerology which involves the Catalan numbers in two different ways.
On flow polytopes, order polytopes, and certain faces of the alternating sign matrix polytope
In this paper we study an alternating sign matrix analogue of the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope, which we call the ASM-CRY polytope. We show that this polytope has Catalan many vertices and its volume is equal to the number of standard Young tableaux of staircase shape; we also determine its Ehrhart polynomial. We achieve the previous by proving that the members of a family of faces of the alternating sign matrix polytope which includes ASM-CRY are both order and flow polytopes. Inspired by the above results, we relate three established triangulations of order and flow polytopes, namely Stanley's triangulation of order polytopes, the Postnikov-Stanley triangulation of flow polytopes and the Danilov-Karzanov-Koshevoy triangulation of flow polytopes. We show that when a graph $G$ is a planar graph, in which case the flow polytope $F_G$ is also an order polytope, Stanley's triangulation of this order polytope is one of the Danilov-Karzanov-Koshevoy triangulations of $F_G$. Moreover, for a general graph $G$ we show that the set of Danilov-Karzanov-Koshevoy triangulations of $F_G$ is a subset of the set of Postnikov-Stanley triangulations of $F_G$. We also describe explicit bijections between the combinatorial objects labeling the simplices in the above triangulations.
A Tutte polynomial inequality for lattice path matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $M$ be a matroid without loops or coloops and let $T(M;x,y)$ be its Tutte polynomial. In 1999 Merino and Welsh conjectured that $$\max(T(M;2,0), T(M;0,2))\geq T(M;1,1)$$ holds for graphic matroids. Ten years later, Conde and Merino proposed a multiplicative version of the conjecture which implies the original one. In this paper we prove the multiplicative conjecture for the family of lattice path matroids (generalizing earlier results on uniform and Catalan matroids). In order to do this, we introduce and study particular lattice path matroids, called snakes, used as building bricks to indeed establish a strengthening of the multiplicative conjecture as well as a complete characterization of the cases in which equality holds.
Automated Discovery and Proof of Congruence Theorems for Partial Sums of Combinatorial Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many combinatorial sequences (for example, the Catalan and Motzkin numbers) may be expressed as the constant term of $P(x)^k Q(x)$, for some Laurent polynomials $P(x)$ and $Q(x)$ in the variable $x$ with integer coefficients. Denoting such a sequence by $a_k$, we obtain a general formula that determines the congruence class, modulo $p$, of the indefinite sum $\sum_{k=0}^{rp -1} a_k$, for {\it any} prime $p$, and any positive integer $r$, as a linear combination of sequences that satisfy linear recurrence (alias difference) equations with constant coefficients. This enables us (or rather, our computers) to automatically discover and prove congruence theorems for such partial sums. Moreover, we show that in many cases, the set of the residues is finite, regardless of the prime $p$.

New Formulas for Dyck Paths in a Rectangle

We consider the problem of counting the set of $\mathscr{D}_{a,b}$ of Dyck paths inscribed in a rectangle of size $a\times b$. They are a natural generalization of the classical Dyck words enumerated by the Catalan numbers. By using Ferrers diagrams associated to Dyck paths, we derive formulas for the enumeration of $\mathscr{D}_{a,b}$ with $a$ and $b$ non relatively prime, in terms of Catalan numbers.

Caminos de Dyck contenidos en un diagrama de Ferrers
We consider the problem of counting subset of Dyck paths contained in a Ferrers diagram. This enumeration concerns to find the number of the elements in a branch of the Kréwéras tree. Using the Ferrers diagrams associated with Dyck paths, we have developed methods of comparison and decomposition diagrams to obtain enumerative formulas in terms of Catalan numbers. These methods have been developed in the form of algorithms and SAGE coded for verification.
The Delta Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We conjecture two combinatorial interpretations for the symmetric function $Δ_{e_k} e_n$, where $Δ_f$ is an eigenoperator for the modified Macdonald polynomials defined by Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman, and Tesler. Both interpretations can be seen as generalizations of the Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund, Haiman, Remmel, Loehr, and Ulyanov, which was proved recently by Carlsson and Mellit. We show how previous work of the third author on Tesler matrices and ordered set partitions can be used to verify several cases of our conjectures. Furthermore, we use a reciprocity identity and LLT polynomials to prove another case. Finally, we show how our conjectures inspire 4-variable generalizations of the Catalan numbers, extending work of Garsia, Haiman, and the first author.

In this note, we derive an alternative recursive formula for the sums of powers of integers involving the Stirling numbers of the first kind. As a remarkable by-product, we provide a non-recursive definition of the Catalan numbers.

On the Structure of nil-Temperley-Lieb Algebras of type A
We investigate nil-Temperley-Lieb algebras of type A. We give a general description of the structure of monomials formed by the generators. We also show that the dimensions of these algebras are the famous Catalan numbers by providing a bijection between the monomials and Dyck paths. We show that the distribution of these monomials by degree is the same as the distribution of Dyck paths by the sum of the heights of the peaks minus the number of peaks.

Snow Leopard Permutations and Their Even and Odd Threads
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 18 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2015, Permutation Patterns (June 1, 2016) dmtcs:1279 • View PublicationBIB
Caffrey, Egge, Michel, Rubin and Ver Steegh recently introduced snow leopard permutations, which are the anti-Baxter permutations that are compatible with the doubly alternating Baxter permutations. Among other things, they showed that these permutations preserve parity, and that the number of snow leopard permutations of length $2n-1$ is the Catalan number $C_n$. In this paper we investigate the permutations that the snow leopard permutations induce on their even and odd entries; we call these the even threads and the odd threads, respectively. We give recursive bijections between these permutations and certain families of Catalan paths. We characterize the odd (resp. even) threads which form the other half of a snow leopard permutation whose even (resp. odd) thread is layered in terms of pattern avoidance, and we give a constructive bijection between the set of permutations of length $n$ which are both even threads and odd threads and the set of peakless Motzkin paths of length $n+1$.

Permutation totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions
Published in Ann. Comb. 22 (2018), no. 3, 641-671 • View PublicationBIB
Alternating sign matrices and totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions are equinumerous sets of objects for which no explicit bijection is known. In this paper, we identify a subset of totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions corresponding to permutations by giving a statistic-preserving bijection to permutation matrices, which are a subset of alternating sign matrices. We use this bijection to define a new partial order on permutations, and prove this new poset contains both the Tamari lattice and the Catalan distributive lattice as subposets. We also study a new partial order on totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions arising from this perspective and show that this is a distributive lattice related to Bruhat order when restricted to permutations.

Modular Catalan Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Catalan number $C_n$ enumerates parenthesizations of $x_0*\dotsb*x_n$ where $*$ is a binary operation. We introduce the modular Catalan number $C_{k,n}$ to count equivalence classes of parenthesizations of $x_0*\dotsb*x_n$ when $*$ satisfies a $k$-associative law generalizing the usual associativity. This leads to a study of restricted families of Catalan objects enumerated by $C_{k,n}$ with emphasis on binary trees, plane trees, and Dyck paths, each avoiding certain patterns. We give closed formulas for $C_{k,n}$ with two different proofs. For each $n\ge0$ we compute the largest size of $k$-associative equivalence classes and show that the number of classes with this size is a Catalan number.

Annular Non-Crossing Matchings
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 19 (2016), Article 16.2.4 • Search Publication
It is well known that the number of distinct non-crossing matchings of $n$ half-circles in the half-plane with endpoints on the x-axis equals the $n^{th}$ Catalan number $C_n$. This paper generalizes that notion of linear non-crossing matchings, as well as the circular non-crossings matchings of Goldbach and Tijdeman, to non-crossings matchings of $n$ line segments embedded within an annulus. We prove that the number of such matchings $\vert Ann(n,m) \vert$ with $n$ exterior endpoints and $m$ interior endpoints correspond to an entirely new, one-parameter generalization of the Catalan numbers with $C_n = \vert Ann(1,m) \vert$. We also develop bijections between specific classes of annular non-crossing matchings and other combinatorial objects such as binary combinatorial necklaces and planar graphs. Finally, we use Burnside's Lemma to obtain an explicit formula for $\vert Ann(n,m) \vert$ for all $n,m \geq 0$.

Generalised and Quotient Models for Random And/Or Trees and Application to Satisfiability
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article is motivated by the following satisfiability question: pick uniformly at random an and/or Boolean expression of length n, built on a set of k_n Boolean variables. What is the probability that this expression is satisfiable? asymptotically when n tends to infinity? The model of random Boolean expressions developed in the present paper is the model of Boolean Catalan trees, already extensively studied in the literature for a constant sequence (k_n)_{n\geq 1}. The fundamental breakthrough of this paper is to generalise the previous results to any (reasonable) sequence of integers (k_n)_{n\geq 1}, which enables us, in particular, to solve the above satisfiability question. We also analyse the effect of introducing a natural equivalence relation on the set of Boolean expressions. This new "quotient" model happens to exhibit a very interesting threshold (or saturation) phenomenon at k_n = n/ln n.

Avoiding vincular patterns on alternating words
Published • View PublicationBIB
A word $w=w_1w_2\cdots w_n$ is alternating if either $w_1<w_2>w_3<w_4>\cdots$ (when the word is up-down) or $w_1>w_2<w_3>w_4<\cdots$ (when the word is down-up). The study of alternating words avoiding classical permutation patterns was initiated by the authors in~\cite{GKZ}, where, in particular, it was shown that 123-avoiding up-down words of even length are counted by the Narayana numbers. However, not much was understood on the structure of 123-avoiding up-down words. In this paper, we fill in this gap by introducing the notion of a cut-pair that allows us to subdivide the set of words in question into equivalence classes. We provide a combinatorial argument to show that the number of equivalence classes is given by the Catalan numbers, which induces an alternative (combinatorial) proof of the corresponding result in~\cite{GKZ}. Further, we extend the enumerative results in~\cite{GKZ} to the case of alternating words avoiding a vincular pattern of length 3. We show that it is sufficient to enumerate up-down words of even length avoiding the consecutive pattern $\underline{132}$ and up-down words of odd length avoiding the consecutive pattern $\underline{312}$ to answer all of our enumerative questions. The former of the two key cases is enumerated by the Stirling numbers of the second kind.
